NW Missouri prison recovering from riot

CAMERON, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri prison is struggling to recover from a riot and the following months-long lockdown.

Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron is struggling to recover from the May 12 riot. The facility houses about 1,500 medium and maximum security inmates.

“Truly, the Crossroads situation is unprecedented in Missouri,” state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Karen Pojmann wrote in an email. “We have never before faced such utter destruction on the scale that occurred … and I’m not aware of any comparable situation in another state.”

Northwest student part of world championship with drum and bugle corps

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Santa Clara Vanguard won the Drum Corps International World Championship this month, and it featured a Northwest Missouri State University student on timpani.

Kaleb Hascall, a senior instrumental music education major from Kansas City, Missouri, has performed with Drum Corps International (DCI) ensembles during the last three summers after learning about DCI from friends and his dad, who performed during the 1980s. The Santa Clara Vanguard drum and bugle corps is a highly selective, professional marching ensemble based in Santa Clara, California.

The Vanguard traveled the country this summer on tour and ended it by winning the DCI championship in Indianapolis, Indiana. It also won the Fred Sanford Trophy, an award for the best percussion ensemble.

“It’s taxing,” Hascall said. “During the summer, it’s 12-hour practices every day for almost three months. You have to be able to handle bad situations and you have to be mature enough.”

Musicians traveled to California to prepare for one month before departing for the tour. A typical day included early mornings, 12-hour rehearsals and driving through the night to the next location.

Hascall said winning the championship was an unexpected and surreal moment. “None of us went there to win, we all went there because, historically, the percussion section is the best and we wanted to be part of the best percussion section.”

In addition to winning, a highlight for Hascall was meeting and playing with musicians that quickly became close friends. “You’re with them every day for so long that they become so close,” Hascall said.

Other highlights included traveling the country, specifically going to Virginia Beach on one of his free days.

“There were water spouts out in the distance because it was kind of a stormy day and we couldn’t be out on the beach, but it was really cool to see like three or four water spouts and it was like a scene from a movie,” Hascall said. “Being able to just not practice for a bit, those days were just so nice.”

Hascall, who is a captain with the Bearcat Marching Band this fall, credits his professors at Northwest for instilling the importance of preparation to perform well.

“When I came in as a freshman, one of the biggest things Dr. Katy Strickland (director of athletic bands at Northwest) taught me was how to prepare for things and how to be ready for an audition or for a concert,” Hascall said. “When it came time to audition for DCI, it was the same thing, like I felt like I knew how to prepare and I knew how to be ready.”

Trial ordered for 2 in death of former Atchison man

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A judge has ordered two men to stand trial in the shooting deaths of a man and woman in Colorado Springs.

Nashid Rayon Rivers-photo El Paso Co. Sheriff

20-year-old Nashid Rayon Rivers and 19-year-old Marquis Dantre Hazard are charged with murder in the deaths of Serena Lee Garcia and Marcus Howard Denton.

Garcia was 21 and lived in Parker. Denton was 20 and was a native of Atchison, Kansas. Their bodies were found in a car on April 21.

Investigators testified that Rivers’ brother told police the defendants planned to steal marijuana from the victims.

In a hearing Friday, District Judge Larry Edward Schwartz noted Rivers and Hazard each blamed the other for the shootings. Schwartz said the evidence was sufficient for both to be tried.

Another hearing is scheduled for Nov. 13.

Missouri Treasurer touts new website as breakthrough in transparency of state finances

Missouri State Treasurer Eric Schmitt, R, introduces the Show Me Checkbook website. Photo courtesy Missourinet.

(Missourinet) – The state of Missouri has a new website for the public to look over information about government finances.

The site was launched by Republican Treasurer Eric Schmitt as a replacement for the Missouri Accountability Portal (MAP) which was introduced in 2007 under former Republican Governor Matt Blunt.

The portal is still up and running under the operation of the Missouri Office of Administration.

Schmitt contends the new system known as Show Me Checkbook was necessary, given the technological advances that have been made during the past decade.

While introducing the new portal to reporters recently at the state Capitol in Jefferson City, Schmitt noted that Missouri received a D+ grade for financial transparency from the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).  He adds that when MAP was launched in 2007, Netflix was still a DVD service delivered through the mail.

The former state legislator is billing Show Me Checkbook as a one-stop for access to the state’s finances. The website has five pages with each one representing a different aspect of the state’s use of money – expenditures, revenue, payroll, liabilities and cash flow.

According to Schmitt, 20 million data points are used to provide information in charts and graphs within each category.

Schmitt says Show Me Checkbook provides Missourians with easy access to the operation of state finances.

“For citizens who want to know what department is spending what, or what vendors are getting paid what, this is all out there,” says Schmitt.  “For the first time now, it’s a one-stop shop for all of that information about how government spends its money.”

The website has been endorsed by the Missouri Press Association and the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the conservative-leaning group Truth in Accounting.

In Missouri, Treasurer Schmitt thinks the transparency provided by the new website will shine a light on problems such as the state employee pension system being underfunded by 40%.

“It’s my belief that the more people know about that, there’ll be more of a focus from policymakers on addressing some of those kinds of issues,” Schmitt says.

Schmitt says upgrades similar to what his department has done with the Show Me Checkbook site have been well received every place they’ve been implemented.

“The states that have done this, the reaction has been really, really positive,” says Schmitt.  “And that is across the board.  That’s for policymakers.  That’s for journalists.  That’s for citizens.”

Schmitt says his department was able to get the Show Me Checkbook site up and running for very little money, stating the only costs were licensing fees amounting to $2,000.

Roadwork on the Belt Highway planned for next week

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Routine repairs to U.S. Route 169 (Belt Highway) will impact St. Joseph traffic next week.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, local maintenance crews plan to mill sections of the Belt Highway and hand patch potholes between Karnes Road and Pear Road. They will begin at Karnes and proceed south. They will work daylight hours, Monday through Thursday. The work may take a week or more to complete.

Due to the nature of this moving operation, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and stay alert for intermittent lane closures all week. The two most important things you can do to protect yourself and roadway workers: buckle up and put your phone down.

All scheduled roadwork is weather permitting and subject to change. MoDOT encourages all motorists to slow down, buckle up, eliminate distractions and drive safely to ensure everyone is able to Arrive Alive.

For more information on this and other MoDOT projects, call 1-888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636) or visit modot.org/northwest and view the online Traveler Information Map. In addition, MoDOT provides updated information on Twitter @MoDOTNorthwest and Facebook.
