Suspect Wanted after Altercation with Elwood Police

Police in Elwood are looking for a man who eluded police this morning during an attempted arrest.

The incident happened Tuesday morning when a police officer was attempting to arrest a man in the Capri Motel parking lot in Elwood.

The man was able to get the weapon of the officer when he tried to flee the scene in a vehicle, Police Chief Larry Hunsaker said.   The suspect drove away from the scene, briefly dragging the officer across the parking lot. The officer was able to get free of the vehicle and was treated for minor injuries at Heartland Hospital.

A white female was arrested at the scene and the suspect was last spotted driving at a high rate of speed across the bridge into St Joseph on Highway 36.

Council Okays Missouri Theater Complex Repairs

The St Joseph City Council has approved a contract for repairs on the Missouri Theater Complex, for damage caused by the fire in February.

The city will kick in more than 110-thousand dollars for the repairs of the A-to-Z Fresh Aire Fare health food store and the Pony Espresso coffee shop.

Insurance will cover most of the 564-thousand dollar repair bill.

A half dozen arts groups returned to the complex almost right away.

The most severe damage involved the two businesses and the space upstairs occupied by the Robidoux Resident Theater.

A squabble with the insurance company, and other bureaucratic delays have forestalled the repairs to that end of the building. Work by Lee Grover Construction was expected to begin right away.

The insurance settlement totaled $451,033. The city will chip in $35,000 from the general fund and another $77,981 from the cell phone settlement fund. Here’s a link to the emergency ordinance okaying the payments.

Missouri Congresswoman Calls Automatic Defense Cuts Draconian

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler

Missouri Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler hopes to stave off what she calls draconian cuts to the defense budget. The Super Committee failed to trim $1.2-trillion from the federal budget, which may trigger massive automatic cuts to the military.

Hartzler says members of Congress need to ease those cuts, and she thinks they will. The Republican representative says President Obama is wrong to say cuts in defense are necessary to balance the budget. Hartzler says there are better options, and she and other members of Congress will work on finding a more constructive approach.

Eagles Putting On Spectacular Show at Squaw Creek

Picking out dinner

Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City is more than ready for this year’s Eagle Days opening on Saturday, with hundreds of the majestic birds on hand.

Conservation ornithologist Brad Jacobs says a lot has changed for the nation’s eagle population since the 1950s, when only a few hundred bald eagles were left in the lower 48 states. Now there are more than 10,000 nesting eagles. They’re gathering at Squaw Creek by the hundreds.

Jacobs says visitors to Squaw Creek this coming weekend will see two eagle populations: those that nest here and those that nest to the north and are driven south by winter weather. They flock to Squaw Creek for open water and tens of thousands of flying meals otherwise known as snow geese.

University of Missouri Wants Training in Geriatrics for All Doctors

Dr. Steven Zweig, University of Missouri School of Medicine

A leading medical educator at the University of Missouri calls for doctors in all specialities to be cross-trained in geriatric medicine. Doctor Steven Zweig writes in the Journal of the American Medical Association that the number of graduates going into geriatric practice is very small, for a variety of reasons.

He says the number of elderly, frail, and vulnerable patients is growing, and it’s important for doctors in other specialties to be exposed to treatment issues and practices. Zweig says care for older patients crosses all medical disciplines.

Three Killed in Two Morning Accidents

Student Captive Returns To Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – An American student arrested during protests in Cairo says he feared for his life after being taken into custody by five Egyptians in plain clothes.

Nineteen-year-old Derrik Sweeney tells The Associated Press that he and two other U.S. students captured by Egyptian security forces were threatened before being released Thursday.

“We were held for about six hours the first night in a nearly fetal position with our hands behind our backs, and they were behind us, and it was very scary,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney and the rest flew back to the U.S. on Saturday after an Egyptian court ordered their release.

Sweeney and his family celebrated a belated Thanksgiving dinner Sunday night in Jefferson City. He says he and the other two students arrested are innocent of all the charges.

He told reporters “none of the three of us held, prepared or threw any bombs, or even rocks, or did anything to hurt anyone or anything.”

Platte City Hop

PLATTE CITY, Mo. (AP) – A wallaby has been caught after escaping from his suburban Kansas City owners as they were feeding him his Thanksgiving Day “greens.”

A confused resident reported seeing a kangaroo hop past shortly before 10am. Authorities were soon hopping to reports that two of the animals were on the loose.

But it turns out there was just one runaway animal, a 4-year-old wallaby named Noah. Wallabies are smaller than kangaroos.

Now Noah is headed to the Kansas City Zoo while officials decide whether his owners can keep him. Platte City doesn’t allow residents to own exotic animals. The question for officers is whether wallabies are considered exotic animals.
