Brief: VFW Regrets Boos at Reporters, Tariff-Relief Reactions, ’93 Flood Flashback: 700 Coffins Float Away

Fallout from President’s Tuesday appearance in Kansas City:

The United States Department of Agriculture announced that it would authorize $12 billion to counteract tariffs’ harm on farmers.

Sen. Jerry Moran:

A month ago lawmakers told the president “our farmers want markets, and not really a payment from government. And he said, ‘I’m surprised, I’ve never heard of anybody who didn’t want a payment from government.’”

Sen. Pat Roberts, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry:

“Trade remains the single best solution to the tough economy in farm country. I will look closely at the President’s assistance proposal, but I hope that the Administration is also working to quickly resolve the tariff situation and restore the export markets our farmers, ranchers, and growers rely on.”

Chiefs training camp is off to another good start in St. Joe.

Upcoming Red Cross donation opportunities as blood shortage continues

According to the American Red Cross, there continues to be an emergency need for donations of all blood types, especially type O, to address a severe blood shortage.

According to a press release, Red Cross blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in, and right now there is less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to keep a five-day supply of blood to meet the needs of patients and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood products.

There is a particular need for type O blood, which plays an important role in ongoing patient care and emergencies. Type O positive is the most transfused blood type and can be given to patients with any Rh-positive blood type. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can
be given to any patient. It’s what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations.

Anyone who donates blood or platelets anytime July 30th through Aug. 30th will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email.

For more information, visit RedCross.org.

Aaron Ahles-Iverson
1978-2018

Aaron Peter Ahles-Iverson, 40, child of God, died Friday July 13, 2018. He was born February 20, 1978 to Valerian Ahles and Christine Iverson.

Aaron grew up in many places but went to high school in Atchison, Kansas where he graduated in 1996. He then went to college at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph Missouri, graduating with a degree in instrumental music education. He then served as director of bands at Chilicothe, Missouri for two years. After that, he worked with a college friend in the then new business Prolific Technologies of St. Joseph, becoming the manager.

Through all of this, music has been and continued to be a large and important part of his life. In high school, he went for three years to Lutheran Summer Music Academy (LSM). As a senior, he received the John Phillip Sousa award for outstanding musicianship and leadership. During college, he was active in bands, jazz, orchestra, and chamber music. It was also then, that he began arranging music, including for marching band shows. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, serving as president of the chapter. He was a long time member of the St. Joseph Symphony, as bassoonist. He also played in the Northwinds Symphonic Band of Kansas City and the Cameron Municipal Band. He played many instruments in many ensembles, being able to pick up almost any wind instrument and play at a performance level.

Aaron and his brother were inseparable almost from Ben’s birth. They shared their mutual love of music, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, baseball, and discussion of theological and current events. Along with friends, they made epic journeys visiting baseball fields across the country. Aaron loved space, astronomy, and NASA, following the space program even as a young child. He believed in God and the exploration of the universe: his faith gave him a sense of awe and amazement, which fueled his love of science.

The brightest sunshine in his life recently, was his niece Elizabeth. Aaron was so proud, not only to be her uncle, but her godfather as well. He loved her greatly and became even more protective of her since his brother’s death in March. It is no coincidence that Aaron died four months to the day of his brother’s funeral.

Aaron was preceded in death by his grandparents Elizabeth and Valentine Ahles (Cold Spring, MN) and Mildred and Alvin Iverson (Spring Valley, WI) and his brother the Rev. Benjamin Ahles-Iverson (Taylor, WI). He is survived by his parents, Rev. Valerian Ahles and Rev. Christine Iverson, his sister Phoebe (and Nathan) Schwabe, sister-in-law Rev. Mara Ahles-Iverson, and niece Elizabeth Kay Ahles-Iverson.

Memorials are to be given to the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) World Hunger Program, and the St. Joseph Symphony.

Brief: 130-Year Record Heat, 2.4 Million MO Drought, Tariff Relief, Lion Loves Simba Doll

Farmers suffer under tariffs. Aid might be on the way.

CF Industries Holding and Mosaic Company both traded up more than 3 percent, while Deere & Co. shot up more than 4 percent after news of the aid package was leaked to The Associated Press by two people briefed on the plan. Shares in Archer-Daniels-Midland and FMC Corp. also rose.

Drought conditions hinder farmers, and your garden, as well.

With cool days ahead, the region is still on pace for record heat.

Heat doesn’t hinder aircraft.

And finally, a couple of nature videos:

St. Joseph Chamber recognized for membership retention

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce was recently recognized as one of the top 10 chambers for membership retention.

Kristi Bailey with the St. Joseph Chamber said they were notified by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives that they were recognized for having placed in the top 10 for membership retention in their division for Fiscal Year 2017.

“That’s really a point of pride for us. What membership retention is, is basically how many… of our members stay members year after year,” Bailey said. “Sometimes you might think it’s easy to get someone to join up for a chamber membership, but it’s not always easy to keep members. So we were very excited to place in the top 10 for our size chamber because it means that what we’ve been doing has been working.”

Chamber President and CEO R. Patt Lilly said businesses join the chamber for different reasons.

“(They join) to increase foot traffic in their doors, to support economic development, to have a larger voice in legislative advocacy efforts, but why they stay is important,” Lilly said. “We’ve seen high retention rates, because members recognize that not only do they receive benefits like educational and networking opportunities, but being a part of the Chamber is a way to support their community.”

Other chambers in the division to receive the top 10 recognition include the Greater Green Bay, Wisc., Chamber and the Toledo, Ohio, Regional Chamber of Commerce, among others.
