Tragic Weekend Traffic

A tragic weekend in Northwest Missouri after a string of unusual traffic accidents.

A Grandview man, his 13-year-old son and another 13-year-old boy were killed Saturday afternoon when a tire blew out on their SUV on I-29 near US-169 in north Kansas City.   The accident Saturday afternoon claimed the life of Lanall Fisher, 40 of Grandview, his son Romell Fisher, and Ronzell Johnson junior were killed in the rollover wreck.  Witnesses say they were caravaning home after a baseball game.

Two people were hurt, one of them seriously, after a one car wreck south of Chillicothe early this morning.  Authorities are still trying to identify the driver.  Three passengers were hurt when a Chevy left county Road 426, crashed through a fence, went airborne, hit a tree and dropped into a ravine. The Missouri State Highway Patrol report says 20-year-old Tyler Jeschke is in serious condition, and 17-year-old Kyle Wilkison suffered moderate injuries.  Both Chilllicothe me were taken to the Hedrick Medical Center.

A suspect fleeing from authorities in Gentry County was injured after his vehicle crashed south of Stanberry. According to an online report, Mitchell Schnitker was being pursued by an officer shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when his pickup truck rolled over a spike strip at Route-M and US-169 highway.  The truck hit an embankment and careened into a ditch.  Schnitker was not wearing a safety belt.  The 21-year-old Union Star man was taken by the officer to St Francis Hospital in Maryville.  He was treated and released.  He was then held briefly in the Nodaway County Jail before being released on Sunday.

A 48-year-old King City man is dead after an early morning wreck Saturday on Missouri Route 31.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports an SUV driven by Kevin Aborn left the highway and went airborne, landing on the passenger side and rolling over.  Aborn was not wearing a safety belt.  He was  pronounced dead at the scene ten miles south of King City.

Buchanan County Starts Rural Crime Watch

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office is starting a Rural Crime Watch program.

One watch area is already set up in Faucet and more will be added as rural residents call the department to request watch area’s.

The program started as an idea from the first Rural Crime Summit held earlier this year. The program is similar to the Neighborhood Watch program in St Joseph, Deputy Sarah Hardin said.

“Even though we are spread out, people are out moving in the county during the day to day. Farmers are out in the field and are moving from field to field. They’re out paying attention to people in the area and they know when they don’t see this car on a regular bases. If they call us, that’s something we can start checking out.”

Still, rural residents are not easy to fool and already look out for each other, Sheriff Mike Strong said. “you know to be quite honest with you most of these people out in the rural areas can be a little salty…and we get quite a few calls,” Sheriff Strong said. “They do really well now we are just looking to improve to again, give them the tools to help then”

At the request of residents, the Sheriff’s Department will help set up watch areas and provide tips and tools to deter crime.

Deputy Hardin, who is also the department’s school resource officer, will coordinate the program. For more information call 816.236.8894.

Suspect Caught, Charges Filed

The AP reports that the last time he ran from the law, Cody Nathaniel Willcoxson led a nine-inmate jail break in Oklahoma.

A decade later, his latest legal run-in ended without violence.  But only after a four-hour, 40-mile manhunt Thursday that included an interstate shootout, the shutdown of a Missouri college where he crashed his car and a failed effort to break into a military base.

The 31-year-old was charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and armed criminal action. He’s being held on $1 million bond.

It’s unclear why Willcoxson tried sneaking on to Fort Leonard Wood, where he drove through a security gate. He was chased onto an interstate where authorities say he appeared to be shooting an AK-47 through the window.

Willcoxson had been released from an Oklahoma prison in 2008

Reward Offered In Bomb Threat

For the second time in a week, Lafayette High School has been locked down for a bogus bomb threat. Officials say a written threat was found on a wall in an annex bathroom at about one p.m.  The principal of the school is getting serious about finding out who’s responsible

By 1:30 p.m. St Joseph police had searched the grounds  and found nothing unusual.  Lafayette was evacuated on Monday after a similar threat.

The principal Tyran Sume (“tie-RAN SOO me”) went on the intercom after the incident and announced a $200 reward for information on who made the threat.  Sume also says any future antics of this kind will result in the time being made up at the end of the day, or the beginning of the following day.

There is one week left in the school year and no time left to make it up on Saturday.

She says students remained in their classrom with minimal interruption during the search of the school.  Final reviews are in progress and some benchmark testing is going on, but she says for the most part the lockdown an annoyance.
