New superintendent begins first week with the St. Joseph School District

New St. Joseph School District Superintendent Dr. Doug Van Zyl tours Hillyard Technical Center during his first day, July 2, 2018.

Monday marked Dr. Doug Van Zyl’s first official day as St. Joseph School District Superintendent.

He met with local media Monday afternoon before taking a tour of Hillyard Technical Center.

“It’s been a great first day so far,” Van Zyl said. “A little overwhelming anytime, I think, that you transition into a new job, but my impression is we’ve got a lot of great folks that I’ve dealt with so far in the short time that I’ve been here and people that really want to do what’s right for the community and for our kids and that’s really what our focus needs to be.”

Dr. Van Zyl comes to St. Joseph from Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he was superintendent for eight years of the school district there of approximately 4,000 students. Van Zyl said it will take some time to get to know the St. Joseph School District and set priorities.

“We started out having a meeting with the board a couple weeks ago and had some conversations about what they, as a board, see as the priorities,” Van Zyl said. “But the number one priority is always going to be taking care of kids and doing what’s best for them. We’re going to have to continue to take a look at finances, of course, there’s some challenges that have been there in the past and will continue to be a challenge. We’ll probably have to put a workshop in place in the next couple months to talk about what finances look like so that we can do some planning for what happens with the revenue… so it’ll take us a little bit of time to dig through it.”

Van Zyl said another priority is communication.

“I think the best thing you can do is communicate, just be open and transparent about what’s going on and what’s there on the plate and then be able to communicate in detail about what the plans are and then follow through on it,” Van Zyl said. “Most people really want… a well established plan and then for us as school district leaders to follow through on it because they don’t want to be told one thing and then find out, oops, it changed or we didn’t tell them what we wanted upfront. So just to be transparent and up front with everything that we’re going to do… is the best approach.”

Van Zyl, along with his family, made the move to St. Joseph last week. Van Zyl and his wife have a son and a daughter who are both in college and another daughter getting ready to attend college in the fall.

“(St. Joseph is a) great community, it’s a little bit bigger than where I was the last eight years but… seems like it’s a community that’s got a lot of positive things going,” Van Zyl said.

3 lawsuits accuse Chillicothe prison guard of assaulting female inmates

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri prison guard now faces a third lawsuit accusing him of sexually assaulting female inmates at a prison in the western Missouri town of Chillicothe.

All three lawsuits naming Edward Bearden have been filed over the past five weeks in federal court in Kansas City, including a suit filed Monday. The lawsuits say that the Missouri Department of Corrections knew or should have known about the assaults.

Bearden has not been criminally charged. His job status wasn’t immediately clear. Messages seeking comment from state officials on Monday were not immediately returned. A lawyer in the Missouri attorney general’s office who represents Bearden did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

The latest lawsuit accuses Bearden of fondling and assaulting an inmate several times starting in October 2015.

Illegal arms dealers might be reporting gun thefts to Kansas City Police to mask sales.

Canadian tariffs went into effect Sunday.

U.S. products, mostly steel and iron, face 25 percent tariffs, the same penalty the United States slapped on imported steel at the end of May. Missouri’s State Fire Marshal says fireworks cause 18,500 fires a year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and an average of $43 million in direct property damage.

Four new Troopers assigned to Troop H

Captain James E. McDonald, commanding officer Troop H, announced the assignment of four new troopers to Northwest Missouri.

According to a news release, the new troopers were members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s 105th Recruit Class that graduated from the Patrol Academy on June 29, 2018. The new troopers will report for duty on July 16, 2018.

Trooper Caleb J. Blue, of Monett, Missouri, has been assigned to Zone 1, which serves the citizens of Atchison and Holt counties. Trooper Blue is a graduate from Monett High School, and attended Missouri Southern State University majoring in criminal justice. Trooper Blue’s training officer will be Trooper Keaton Ebersold.

Trooper Vince P. Wiley, of Cameron, Missouri, has been assigned to Zone 1, which serves the citizens of Atchison and Holt counties. Trooper Wiley is a graduate from Gallatin High School, and attended Missouri Western State University. Trooper Wiley is married to Rebecca (Mott) Wiley. Trooper Wiley’s training officer will be Trooper Tyler Shupe.

Trooper Cedric D. O’Hara, of Pierce City, Missouri, has been assigned to Zones 4 and 9, which serves the citizens of Grundy, Mercer, and Livingston counties. Trooper O’Hara is a graduate from Pierce City High School, and attended Missouri Valley College majoring in criminal justice. Trooper O’Hara’s training officer will be Corporal Matt Wright.

Trooper Christopher S. Riley, of Warsaw, Missouri, has been assigned to Zones 4 and 9, which serves the citizens of Grundy, Mercer, and Livingston counties. Trooper Riley is a graduate from Warsaw High School and attended State Fair Community College majoring in criminal justice. Trooper Riley’s training officer will be Corporal John Gilliland.

John A. Bolden
1931-2018

Elwood, Kansas – John A. Bolden, 86, of Elwood, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018.

John was born on September 12, 1931 in Troy, Kansas to George & Bertha Bolden.

He was a member of the U.S. Army & a POW for 2 years. John work for Carnation for 30 years in the maintenance department.

John married Vivian Maxine Turner, she preceded him in death & also preceded in death by his parents & all his siblings.

Survivors: children, Les Bolden, Joseph Bolden, Patricia Bolden & Anthony Bolden all of Elwood, Kansas & Edward Bolden of Arizona. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.

Mary Ann (Barber-Gripe) Tull
1932-2018

Mary Ann (Barber-Gripe) Tull, 85, of Atchison KS died on Tuesday, June 26th at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 2nd, 2018 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Lucas officiating. Mary Ann Barber was born on August 27, 1932 in Atchison KS the daughter of Victor W. and Bessie B. (Mayfield) Barber. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1950. She had worked as a bank teller for Exchange National Bank, co-owned several Subway stores with Cecil and worked at the3 Atchison Subway store, and was a seamstress, housewife and homemaker. She was a member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, and played the piano and organ for the church and for each church she attended throughout her life. Mary Ann enjoyed cooking, crocheting, Gospel music, being the family historian and spending time with her family.

Mary Ann was married to Cecil Gripe on June 6, 1954. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2009. She was later married to Jim Tull on December 31, 2009. Mr. Tull survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Chris (Kelley) Gripe, Shawnee, KS, three daughters, Cecilia (Doug) Wieberg, St. Louis, MO, and Cynthia (Steve) Graves, St. Joseph, MO and Staci (Dennis) Mix, Amity, MO, nine grandchildren, Jordan (Alec) Lemmon, Mackenzie Gripe, Lauren (Chad) McConnell, Chad (Tiffany) Graves, Steffany (Tim) Vincent, Craig Graves, Sydney (Michael) Rueckert, Hunter Mix, Christopher Mix and two great grandchildren, Rowan McConnell, Asher Vincent and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, three brothers, David, Jerry, and John Barber and two sisters, Ruth Theesfield, and Betty Gage, also preceded her in death.

Robert “Bob” Eugene Long
1929-2018

Heaven gained a gentle soul on Saturday, June 23, 2018, when Robert Eugene “Bob” Long, 88, passed away at the VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kan., after a brief illness with cancer.Bob was born on Dec. 16, 1929, to Joseph and Mabel (Lent) Long, and spent most of his life in St. Joseph.

Bob attended South Park Elementary School and Central High School. After serving in the Army and Army Reserves during the Korean War, Bob returned to St. Joseph to work alongside his brother, Bill Long, at Long’s Machine Shop, as the shop delivery man. Prior to his military service, he was employed by the railroad in Kansas City, Mo.He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Ramona (Jahnke) Long. Uncle Bob is survived by his niece and her family, Mona and Brad Brumm and their daughters Lenora, Audrey, Brooke and Caroline. Violet Marie Pyles 85, of Weston, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 25, 2018 at a St. Joseph Health Care Center. She was born October 3, 1932 in Atchison, KS, daughter of the late Opal and Alvean Handke. She graduated from Atchison High School and worked at Whitaker Cable, and Platte City Caring Center. She enjoyed gardening, working around the yard, feeding the squirrels, and she loved horses. Don was born on January 10, 1938 at Rushville, MO, the son of George and Ruth (Murdock) Bramble. Don graduated from Atchison High School in 1957. Don was an over the road truck driver for MGP Ingredients for over 31 years. He was fondly known by those who knew him by his CB handles, (‘Duck’, ‘Red Dog’, ‘Bam Bam’), or always having cookies or candy to pass out, (‘Cookie Man’, ‘Candy Man’) or an affectionate nickname given by his grandchildren such as ‘HO HO’. Don enjoyed snowmobiling, truck pulls, boating, NASCAR races, or anything that had to do with an engine. Don was a member of the local Teamsters Union and had been a Union Steward while working for MGP.

Don was married to Betty Dugger and they later divorced. Don later met the love of his life, Nancy Shelton, and they have been together over 27 years.

Don is survived by Nancy, of the home; two sons, Donald E. (Linda) Bramble, Jr., Rushville, and Mark (Sharon) Hurst, Effingham; Nancy’s children, Judy (Jeff) Sailors, Lori Cox, and Ronnie (Laralee) Shelton; grandchildren, Christopher (Natalie) Bramble, Dustin and Tyler Hurst, Maggie and John Earl; Nancy’s nine grandchildren and their families, Joe (Liz) Robinson, Mandy (John) Olszowka, Katie Merritt, Emily (Eric) Revel, Morgan (Justin) Schilling, Derek (Hailey) Shelton, Aaron, Trae and Tanner Shelton; five great grandchildren, Austin, Allison, Aiden, Aric & Aubrey Bramble and Nancy’s several great-grandchildren; a sister, Marlene (Bill) White, St. Joseph.

Elmer Lee Marshall Sr.
1930-2018

Elmer Lee Marshall Sr. 87, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. He was born September 6, 1930 in St. Joseph, MO, and attended Benton High School. He served in the United States Navy and is a veteran of the Korean War. Elmer retired from Rainbow Bakery where he worked for over 30 years, starting as a baker and retiring as a Chief Lead Engineer. He took a 3 year break from the bakery, owning and operating the B & M Truck Stop. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering, antique car shows, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved going to anything Country & Western. His latest hobby was being on Face Book. Elmer was preceded in death by father, Ransom Marshall, mother, Pearl Minnie Marshall-Meade, a son, Larry Marshall, granddaughter, Misty Hewitt, sisters; Irene Van Hull and Pearl Brumback, brothers; Leonard Ray Meade and Gary Meade. Sandra (Blevins) McRae
1951-2018

Sandy L. (Blevins) McRae, formerly of Highland, KS, currently of Kansas City, Missouri,

She was born on August 29, 1951, to the late Virginia Gysin and Bernie Blevins, passed away at age 66 on June 27, 2018 in Kansas City, Missouri.

She grew up in Highland, Kansas where she graduated from high school in 1969, and later met her husband, Steve McRae, nearby in Big Lake, Missouri. She graduated from K-State University and spent 43 years in interior design before retiring in 2016.

She is survived by Steve, her loving husband of 45 years, her son Andrew McRae and daughter-in-law Amanda McRae, brothers Curt Blevins (Joan), Brad Blevins (Julee), sisters Janet Cyphers (Jim), Cathy Clark (Bill), and many beloved nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her cat, Kitty and dog, Sherlock.

She was an active member of Keystone United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Mission Sewing Group. Family and friends were most important to Sandy and she will be remembered as someone who always put others before herself.

Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. and funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at Keystone United Methodist Church, 406 W 74th St., Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, July 7, 2018. Private burial services will be at the Highland Cemetery.

Kersweath Junior Michiosy
1990-2018

Kersweath ‘Junior’ Michiosy, born on March 7, 1990 in Weno Chuuk Micronesia. He passed away at the age of 28, on Tuesday June 12, 2018, son of mother : Kirosen Kirano Hewinin and Father Junior Michiosy Kansou. He was known as Junior, Jayro or Eman. He was raised on the island of Guam, and was a graduate of Washington High School home of the Blue Jays (C/O 2008). He also played football in Washington High School with one of his best friend Jordan Julios. He was aspiring to be one of the greatest MMA fighters and wanted to represent and show the love of his home town (Chuuk FSM) through fighting. He was a member of the Brazilian Jiu Jitzu of Saint Joseph, MO.
He is celebrated in life by his mother and father, Kirosen Kirano Hewinin, and Junior Michiosy Kansou. His baby sister Khaila Hewinin, and his many siblings. His Fiancé Kimrin Suzuki. His daughter Alessia Marie Michiosy and son Jamarley Prince Junior Michiosy, and his many cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and friends and his teammates from SJBJJ. Junior was always the goofy laidback person everybody loved to be around. He was a family oriented kind of guy. He treated everybody with the same amount of respect and love. One of his favorite pastime was being with family and friends. Loved spending quality time with his kids, little sister, mom and fiancé. Loved being around his many nieces and nephews whom he referred to as “his babies”. He loved spending his spare time driving around looking for a good spot to hang out and watch the sun set. He loved to meet up with his friends and have a good time. Junior was a great dad, and uncle. The best brother, awesome son, caring fiancé, and a one of a kind best friend to everybody. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, contagious smile, and great personality. His easy going nature and love to everyone around him. Evelyn Ella Isaacs
1929-2018

Evelyn Ella Isaacs 88, of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2018 in Wichita, KS. She was born August 8, 1929 in Natrona, KS, daughter of the late Nora and Henry Deistler. She graduated from high school and attended one year of college. She married Jackson Isaacs on May 13, 1995 in St. Joseph at the Christ Episcopal Church. She was a homemaker. In her younger years she worked in the Circus as a trapeze artist, she also worked in the knife throwing exhibition. Evelyn was an exceptional and accomplished artist, well known for her oil and pastel paintings, and she carries the distinction PEO after her signature. She loved St. Joe and created many works of art there and taught many the art of pastel painting. You could say she brought her art to St. Joe, and she touched many lives, teaching students at the schools and adults as well. She formed the Midwest Artist Association and was a charter member of the Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph. She was awarded PTO from pastel organization of America, and she was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Jackie Jordan, sons, Steve Douglas Jordan, and Jim Jordan. Survivors include, husband, Jackson Isaacs of Saint Joseph, MO, three children: Charlotte Trull of TN, David (Kris) Jordan, Wichita, KS, and Patricia Beck of Wichita, KS, three step children: Michael Isaacs, Las Cruces, NM, Jonathan L (Yvonne) Isaacs and Monique (Darrell) Albritton, Lake Elsinore, CA, numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

1940-2018

Loretta Jean Maag 78, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, June 29, 2018 in a Saint Joseph, Missouri health care center. She was born June 28, 1940 in Fortescue, Missouri, daughter of the late Pauline & Marion Goolsby. She graduated from Lafayette High School, and she worked in the housekeeping department at the Missouri Methodist Medical Center. She enjoyed watching TV, playing video games, and spending time with her family. Loretta was preceded in death by her brother, Laverne Goolsby, and her parents. Survivors include: son, Kevin Goolsby, Kansas City, MO, daughter, Adrianna Maag (Casey Perkins), St. Joseph, MO, three grandchildren: Dalton, Makayla and Keyra Maag, sister, Luticia Kneib, sister-in-law, Chelita Goolsby both of St. Joseph, MO, as well as numerous nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-3 pm Tuesday with a celebration of life to begin at 3:00 pm Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home.

Arthur Jacob Wagner, 70, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Friday, June 29, 2018.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Atchison, KS. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 9:45 AM with visitation following until time of service at the church. Arthur was born February 14, 1948 in Atchison, KS, the son of Nicholas and Mildred (Funk) Wagner. Since retiring from his insulation business he remained active in the industry through participation in energy conservation organizations. He also enjoyed helping others with handyman services. Arthur was a member of St. Patrick’s and the Knights of Columbus. Arthur was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing. He especially enjoyed his family.

Arthur is survived by two children; daughter, Corrin and Jeremy Herigon, Overland Park, KS, and son, Austin and Kathleen Wagner, Lee Summit, MO, a brother, Dennis and Marlene Wagner, Atchison, KS, a sister, Helen and Eugene Hagel, Mission, KS, six grandchildren, Jake, Cayt and Drew Herigon, Lucy, Archer and Maren Wagner.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mo. woman charged in DUI crash that killed 5-year-old daughter

SMITHVILLE, Mo. (AP) – Authorities say a Missouri woman is charged with driving drunk in a crash that killed her 5-year-old daughter.

The Kansas City Star reports that court records say 31-year-old Samantha Jones’ blood-alcohol content measured more than double the legal limit after the June 24 crash. Her daughter, Macklyn Lucas, died three days later.

Macklyn’s father, Beau Lucas, described the girl in a message to The Star as “caring, compassionate, funny and so wise beyond her years.”

Jones has been released on bond on a charge of driving while intoxicated. The charge carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a phone message.

SJPD investigating after several cars vandalized overnight

St. Joseph Police are investigating after several cars were vandalized overnight.

According to Sgt. Steve McClintick with the police department, the windows were broken out of at least four vehicles in the area of 17th and Faraon Street. McClintick said it does not appear anything was missing from the vehicles. Police estimate the vandalism happened sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 3 a.m. Monday.

Police investigate bomb threat at Kmart

Police investigated a bomb threat at a St. Joseph business Sunday night.

According to police, a Kmart employee notified police around 8:30 p.m. that the store had received a call saying there was a bomb in the building.

Police responded to the business at 2901 North Belt and evacuated the building. According to police, no devices were located and they did not find anything suspicious.

Business resumed as normal shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Planned road work for northwest Missouri, July 2-8

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The following is a listing of general highway maintenance and construction work in the Northwest Missouri region planned for the week of July 2 – 8 from the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Most routine work zones will stop at noon Tuesday, July 3 and resume at 7 a.m. Thursday, July 5 for the Independence Day holiday, but some closures may remain in place.

In addition to the work listed below, there may be pothole patching, mowing, shoulder work, bridge maintenance, striping, brush cutting, guardrail repairs, litter pick up and other road work conducted throughout the region. Many of these will be moving operations and could include lane closures with delays. All scheduled maintenance and construction projects are subject to change.

MoDOT reminds the public to stay alert, watch for road work, buckle up, slow down, and drive with extreme caution through work zones and in changing weather conditions.

Route C – Resurfacing and shoulder project from Route 116 to Route CC, July 2,3,5,6. A pilot car and a flagger will direct traffic through the work zone.

Daviess County

Route 13 – CLOSED for a bridge replacement project at the Honey Creek Bridge. The road will be closed through September. A signed detour is in place.

Route P – CLOSED for a culvert replacement from Route K to Route YY, July 2, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Grundy County

U.S. Route 65 – Sealing project from the north city limits of Chillicothe to the Iowa state line, July 2,3,5,6. This includes a 12-foot width restriction.

Route 6 – Resurfacing project from Iowa Boulevard to No Creek, July 2 – 3. Flaggers and a Pilot Car will direct motorists through the work zone.

Harrison County

Route AA/H – CLOSED for a bridge deck replacement at the I-35 overpass. The bridge will be closed through July. One lane of I-35 may be closed in each direction during the project.

I-35 – Resurfacing project from the Iowa state line to Route N at Eagleville, July 2,3,5,6. This includes a 16-foot width restriction and will include overnight lane closures.

Route OO – CLOSED for a sealing project, July 2, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
