St. Joseph woman sentenced for selling stolen firearms

A St. Joseph woman was sentenced in federal court Wednesday for selling stolen firearms.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Missouri, O’Ceonna S. Thomas-Weston, 23, of St. Joseph, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to five years in federal prison without parole.

On Nov. 28, 2017, Thomas-Weston pleaded guilty to selling a stolen firearm. Co-defendant Ronnie Lee Martin III, 22, of St. Joseph, has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.

Thomas-Weston admitted that she sold a stolen Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle to a confidential informant. Thomas-Weston contacted the confidential informant and indicated she had an AR-15 style rifle for sale and wanted $1,200 for the rifle. The confidential informant negotiated the price down to $900. Thomas-Weston told the confidential informant she hoped the person that bought the rifle didn’t get caught with it because it was a stolen military rifle.

Thomas-Weston also admitted that she had earlier sold a Taurus .38-caliber revolver and a Taurus 9mm pistol to the confidential informant. She had agreed to sell the confidential informant a .25-caliber pistol, but that sale never occurred. Thomas-Weston and Martin also sold the confidential informant a stolen Remington 30-06 caliber rifle.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily A. Morgan. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the St. Joseph Police Department and the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department.

University Police at Northwest receive grant funding for lifesaving equipment

Chief of University Police Clarence Green. Photo courtesy Northwest Missouri State University.

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Gladys M. Rickard Charitable Trust has awarded Northwest Missouri State University and its University Police Department with grant funds to purchase lifesaving equipment.

The grant funds, amounting to $7,500, will be used to purchase equipment including helmets with shields and vests designed to protect officers confronting an active shooter or civil disturbance. The equipment also enhances officers’ abilities to respond to such situations.

“This critical equipment allows us the ability to respond in a more efficient way and provide a level of safety to our officers who are responding as well as to those folks who they are saving,” University Police Chief Clarence Green said.

Northwest serves as the lead agency for armed intruder training for all law enforcement agencies within the region, and the University Police Department proactively educates Northwest students and employees about “Run, Hide, Fight,” a national model for responding to a hostile intruder.

In spring 2017, Northwest developed and led a full-scale exercise involving an armed intruder, and the new equipment was identified as a need during after-action reviews of the exercise.

Green, who will oversee the implementation of the new equipment, said the University Police Department trains for hostile intruder situations three times a year, in addition to quarterly firearms training.

Northwest’s University Police Department serves all students, faculty, staff and visitors on the campus. All of its police officers are state-certified and have commission that extends their authority throughout the state of Missouri. Since its operations began more than 50 years ago, the department has progressed into a national leader in campus law enforcement and prevention-based policing practices. Today, the department is responsible for police services, emergency planning and coordination, emergency communication, parking management, student security and transportation services on the campus.

Brief: New Gov meets lawmakers, lawmakers react, tweet. Roberts on Farm Bill

KY3 shares the transcript from Missouri Governor Mike Parson’s address to the State Assembly.

And one hundred years from now, long after each of us has departed from this earth, these seats will continue to exist, held by men and women whose grandparents have not even been born.

This does not mean disregarding our beliefs or moderating our positions. It means debating with respect. It means conducting ourselves with integrity.

Here’s a link to the video.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch with a report on Parson meeting with lawmakers, including US Senator Claire McCaskill:

“I don’t think that Gov. Greitens saw this as a team effort,” McCaskill said after the meeting. “I think he saw it as that he could always go it alone and that he was wanting to fight everybody. This governor appears that he wants to work with everybody instead of fight everybody.”

We will not get a perfect bill. We will not meet the demands of those who want to slash the SNAP program. We will not make radical spending cuts within our farm programs. But, we will make progress, and that is more than our producers have seen in years.
