Some roads re-open in Livingston County, part of 36 still closed

Some roads in Livingston County are re-opening Friday morning.

According to Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox, U.S. 36 East from Chillicothe is opening and will be two lane traffic initially.

Highway 190 at Thompson River Bridge has also opened.

Sheriff Cox urges motorists to be cautious as the shoulder on 190 has eroded in places and could cause vehicle damage if you drive off the paved portion of the road.

Cox says there is no time estimate to re-open U.S. 36 West from Chillicothe to Utica or for U.S. 65 south of Chillicothe as the water remains over the roadway.

Missouri River on the rise again, approaching crest reached in 2011

A lot is at stake as the Missouri River continues to rise at St. Joseph.

The river is expected to crest today at just over 29 feet, approaching the crest at the height of the 2011 flood. The highest crest was reached earlier this year in March, just over 32 feet, slightly higher than the previous crest reached during the 1993 flood.

State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer of Parkville, who recently toured the levees protecting St. Joseph with Gov. Mike Parson, says those levees are protecting valuable assets.

“I think the levees are protecting about $2 billion worth of assets,” Luetkemeyer tells St. Joseph Post. “It really goes to show you how important flood control is for the river and one of the things I’ve been very vocal on, both myself and Sen. (Dan) Hegeman, is that the Army Corps of Engineers needs to reprioritize its Master Plan for the river, to make sure that flood control is the number one priority.”

Luetkemeyer says the widespread flooding this year and the devastation it is leaving in its wake, should help the Corps listen perhaps more than it has in the past.

“To me, it’s common sense. Sometimes common sense doesn’t get through in Washington, D.C.,” Luetkemeyer says. “But, I think if enough people speak loud enough with enough voices in unison I’m hopeful that we’re going to get some movement.”

Both in March and in 1993, the Missouri River rose above 32 feet at St. Joseph.

Northeast Kansas dam expected to fail, send floodwaters over HW 36, Kickapoo Indian Reservation, Golden Eagle Casino

St. Joseph Post

UPDATE: Click here for the latest on this story. Kansas state officials downplay worries the dam will fail or that failure would cause widespread damage.

Kansas Dept. of Agriculture photo

A dam south of Sabetha, Kansas is expected to fail this afternoon, sending floodwaters downstream on the Delaware River.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flash flood warning for southwestern Brown County, east-central Nemaha County, and northeastern Jackson County.

At 2:30 this afternoon, emergency management officials reported the failure of the dam a mile south of Sabehta was imminent.

If the dam indeed fails, flash flooding is expected to overrun U.S. Highway 36 in northeastern Kansas. The Kickapoo Indian Reservation and Golden Eagle Casino are also threatened. The National Weather Service says water could rise to near 13.8 feet at U.S. Highway 36 about an hour after the dam fails. Water could rise to just over 11 feet at U.S. Highway 75 three-and-a-half hours after the failure.

Budweiser Clydesdales return to the 2019 Missouri State Fair

(MO SF) The World renowned Budweiser Clydesdales are returning to the 2019 Missouri State Fair, Aug 8-18. The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed and hitched to the famous red beer wagon at the Clydesdale tent on the fairgrounds one hour previous each scheduled parade. On Friday Aug. 16 and Sat. August 17 the horses will open the popular draft horse show in the Exhibition Center at 6 p.m.

The Clydesdales’ appearance in Sedalia is one of hundreds made annually by the traveling hitches. Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800’s today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show.

Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is also very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian as they were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

The Budweiser Clydesdales can be viewed at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in St. Louis, Mo.; Merrimack, N.H.; and Ft. Collins, Colo. They also may be viewed at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis and at Warm Springs Ranch, the 300-plus acre Clydesdale breeding farm located near Boonville, Mo.

You can learn more about the history of the Clydesdales from the specialists at Budweiser and Warm Springs Ranch, Aug. 8-18, at the 2019 Missouri State Fair, in Sedalia.

Remington Nature Center closes as floodwaters threaten

Rising flood waters along the Missouri River prompted officials with the Remington Nature Center to close, beginning today.

Officials say the nature center will reopen when floodwaters recede.

Also, Heritage Park is closed, also due to rising floodwaters.  All adult recreation league games scheduled for today at Heritage are cancelled.

Future games will be moved to alternate locations. Recreation staff will contact the recreation teams once the alternate locations have been finalized.

I-29, U.S. 59, U.S. 36, U.S. 45, U.S. 65 among the 300+ roads closed due to flooding throughout Missouri

St. Joseph Post

Interstate 29 isn’t the only major thoroughfare closed due to flooding.

The Missouri Department of Transportation reports flooding has forced the closing of more than 300 roads throughout the state.

U.S. Route 45 south of St. Joseph, from Route 116 at Rushville to just south of Iatan, has been closed. U.S. Route 59 from Rushville to Atchison, Kansas was closed earlier.

Flooding along the Grand River is disrupting travel in the Chillicothe and Carrollton area. MoDOT reports flooding has closed two sections of U.S. Route 65; one from Chillicothe south to Route H and the second from Carrollton to U.S. Route 24 in Waverly. Portions of U.S. Route 24, Route 10, and Route 139 are also closed.

A long section of U.S. Route 36 has been closed by MoDOT. Flooding in Caldwell, Linn, and Livingston Counties forced the closing this morning of Route 36 from Route 13 in Hamilton to Route 5 just west of Brookfield.

MoDOT is advising motorists to take detours. For those traveling east on Route 36, take Interstate 35 north to U.S. Route 136, then east onto U.S. Route 63 south. If westbound on Route 36, take U.S. Route 63 north to U.S. Route 136 west to I-35 south. Brookfield traffic can use Route 5.

I-29 was closed just north of St. Joseph at the U.S. 71 exit after floodwaters forced the interstate to close in southwest Iowa; a 67-mile stretch to the Iowa border.

Other major highways closed because of flooding include U.S. 54 at Louisiana, Missouri, and U.S. 36 west of Bevier at the Chariton River. Some streets near the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City also are closed.

All regions of the state have been affected by flooding, though northern Missouri has the greatest number of road closures.

The transportation department says Amtrak passenger train service between St. Louis and Kansas City also has been suspended. The trains use tracks that run near the Missouri River.
