A suspect was wounded after a theft led to a foot chase and shots fired in Daviess County.

According to a news release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 10:46 a.m. on Monday, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department advised Troop H Headquarters of a theft in progress at a residence in Ridgeway. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department provided a description of a vehicle involved in the incident and advised the suspect vehicle was southbound on Interstate 35.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper observed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description southbound on I-35. While attempting to overtake the suspect vehicle, the trooper observed the vehicle exit I-35 and travel west on Route N in Daviess County. The trooper overtook the suspect vehicle and saw it slide through the intersection of Route N and US 69 and crash into a ditch.

Preliminary investigations revealed the male driver and a female occupant fled the vehicle with the trooper pursuing on foot. The male suspect fired shots at the trooper. The trooper returned fire, hitting the suspect who was then taken into custody. The female was apprehended a short time later.

The suspect was transported by ambulance to a Kansas City area hospital.

Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and Daviess County Sheriff’s Department are conducting the investigation into the shooting.

Spring 2018 open burning dates announced

Open burning for spring 2018 has been approved for Monday, April 2, 2018 through Sunday, April 22, 2018 by the Air Pollution Control Unit Chief of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

According to a press release from the City of St. Joseph Health Department, open burning is permitted on these days within the City of St. Joseph under the following guidelines:

• Burning of yard waste of residential properties only – only dry yard waste such as leaves, brush and logs grown on the property can be burned. No trash, paper, lumber or building debris may be burned.
• Burning is allowed between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
• All fires must be in an upright cylindrical metal container with a volume equal to no more than 55 gallons. Containers must be located at least fifteen (15) feet away from any building. Only one burn container per residence.
• All fires shall be monitored from a point on the property where the fire is located, by a person capable of containing a fire, should containment become necessary.
• Fire-fighting material, including but not limited to, a garden hose or a container of water sufficient to contain any fire started shall be at the site of the fire.
• If weather conditions such as high winds indicate the safety of the community or the public may be endangered or if open burning may create a health hazard, the Fire Chief or Health Director may invoke a temporary burning ban.

Any violation of the open burning restrictions may result in a summons to appear in court for a misdemeanor violation.

Residents are encouraged to explore alternatives to open burning. Many options for disposing of yard waste are easy, do not contribute to air pollution, are not dependent on time restrictions or the weather, and provide the healthy benefit of physical activity while doing yard work instead of breathing acrid smoke from a waste fire. Such activities include mowing leaves into fine particles and leaving them lay to fertilize the lawn, or incorporating leaves into a mulch container to decompose into humus for use in vegetable and flower gardens or for use on lawns as a soil amendment. Larger wood brush that can be chipped makes excellent mulch around trees and shrubs. Family and friends with gardens may want additional yard waste to use as mulch.
If you choose to burn, please do so within the days provided, as open burning session will not be extended due to weather blackout dates.

Leonard Marsh Rush
1946-2018

Leonard Marsh Rush, 71, was mercifully released from his hard fought battle with behavior variant frontal temporal dementia on March 14, 2018 to be with his Lord Jesus. Leonard was born May 31, 1946 to Joe and Wilma Rush (both deceased) and grew up on the family farm outside of Severance, KS. He was quite an athlete and was very involved in sports throughout his time in Highland High School and Highland Community College. He held several records and still holds a record for the low hurdles. He earned his Associates degree and married his bride of 50 years, Sue (who survives), on June 7, 1967. Leonard went to Mid-Continent Aviation School of Aeronautics and became an aircraft structural repair specialist. Upon graduation they moved to Florida and he was employed at Pratt Whitney Aircraft as a journeyman experimental machinist where he worked with many varieties of “unknown” metals with extreme tolerances. He made a part under heavy security that was used for the space shuttle. He then became a journeyman lineman and worked for Florida Power and Light and then Kansas Power and Light. His Dad asked him to come back to the family farm. He worked 19 years for his Dad on the farm and supplemented his income by working for Midwest Grain Products in Atchison for those same 19 years. Upon the death of his father, Leonard continued farming full time until his dementia made it impossible. Leonard always had a love for horses and dabbled in all things horses. He was a generous man. He helped many people pay for groceries and gave away many a hog he had raised for food for others in exchange for their help butchering them. He would give you the shirt off his back if he knew you needed it. He loved to have someone with him to talk to and he always dreamed big. Fishing was lifelong hobby and it was a good trip if he got his “walking fish”. He was a proud father to six children: Teresa (Marty) Scheuerman of Severance, KS; Tami Sue Rush (deceased); Tisha (Tom) Sledd, New Castle, IN; Toby (JoAnna) Rush, Roeland Park, KS; Tonya (Jason) Grider, Halstead, KS; and Tara (Brian) Stevens, Palmyra, MO. Michael Joseph Hein
1947-2018

Michael J. Hein, 71, joined his Savior Jesus in heaven, Thursday, March 15, 2018 at his home in Atchison, KS.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, Atchison. Family will received visitors from 12:30-2 p.m. the same day. The family requests that memorial donations in honor of Mike be made to CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ), and sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences and memories to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Mike was born on January 19, 1947 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Edwin and Mildred (Heggy) Hein. He attended schools in Merriam and Overland Park, KS, graduating from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1966. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1972. Later he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Columbia International University (previously Columbia Biblical Seminary) in 1988.

Mike used his engineering skills for thirty years at nuclear and coal-fired power plants around the nation. He helped to design the electrical system at Iatan Power Generating Station.

In 2001 he began a new career as a missionary in Romania where he taught at the Bucharest Baptist Seminary, at various churches, and in his home, emphasizing the strategic utility of small group development for church planting, evangelism and discipleship. He retired in 2011 and made his home in Atchison where he was involved in Bible studies and local politics.

Mike and the former Cherie Shuck were married on December 30, 1972. She survives of the home. Together they raised four children, moved from power plant to power plant, and served as missionaries, enjoying travel to many international destinations.

Mike loved Jesus. And he told nearly everyone he met that they needed Jesus to go to heaven. There will be a lot of people in heaven who welcome him because he told them how to meet Jesus, the One who had made a way for them to be in heaven. Northwest Missouri Red Cross Heroes Campaign underway

The northwest Missouri Red Cross has kicked off their annual fundraising drive.

Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northwest Missouri Angie Springs said the Heroes Campaign runs through April.

“We recruit anywhere from 60 to 100 Heroes and Heroes Teams that set out during the month of March and April to raise money for the Northwest Missouri Chapter,” Springs said. “This is the only local non-disaster driven fundraiser that we utilize every year so it’s very vital to our services.”

Springs said the annual fundraising drive is important to the services the Red Cross provides in northwest Missouri.

“It goes to help provide that support for us to be immediate responders during times of disaster, so when there’s a single-family house fire at 2 a.m. on Christmas morning, we’re able to be there,” Springs said. “It also helps us provide our vital services to Armed Forces where we are the direct link between service members and their families. It also enables us to teach lifesaving CPR and First Aid as well as collect vital blood units that are needed coast to coast across the nation and right here in our communities.”

Springs said the overall goal this year is to raise $150,000. To donate or find out more information, click here.
