St. Joseph Health Department offices to be closed Monday

The City of St. Joseph Health Department offices and services located at 904 South 10th Street will be closed on Monday.

This closure will not affect Animal Control and Rescue staff and facility or other services located within Patee Market Health Center, which are operated by the Social Welfare Board.

According to a press release, the City of St. Joseph Health Department staff will be participating in a full-scale Point of Dispensing Exercise being conducted by the Caldwell County Health Department. This is an opportunity for health department staff to gain valuable public health response experience and work collaboratively with outside agencies toward a common objective. Public health and other emergency management personnel use such exercises for training purposes.

A Point of Dispensing, or “POD” site, would provide medications, vaccines, or medical supplies to a large community of healthy people during a health emergency. POD sites would be activated prior to the onset of illness in order to decrease illness and prevent death. POD sites have been established for St. Joseph’s Emergency Plan. They are in locations that are both familiar and easily accessible to the community (schools, community centers, churches, etc.) and are designed to serve as a place for the public to come and receive medications, vaccines and medical supplies. The ultimate goal of a POD is to provide these items to large numbers of people in a short window of time.

The City of St. Joseph Health Department will resume services at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 13th.

Applications being accepted for Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy

Buchanan County residents have an opportunity to experience what it’s like to work in law enforcement through an upcoming program.

The St. Joseph Police Department and the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office will present an eight-week Citizen’s Academy in April. They have been offering the program for over 10 years.

Sheriff Bill Puett said the Citizen’s Academy exposes community members to various aspects of area law enforcement.

“It introduces people who are interested to see some of the aspects of law enforcement and maybe dispel some of those myths and see some of the actual tools and techniques and those type of things,” Puett said. “For example, we have a SWAT night, they go up and watch the SWAT team… they can do ride-alongs… we do a case presentation. We talk about traffic and we talk about the jail and the court, how there’s all these little nuances of things that people, they see it on TV or they hear about it, but they’re not really exposed to the topic.”

The program takes place Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays April 3rd through May 22nd. For more information call (816) 236-1473 or pick up an application at the St. Joseph Police Department lobby. Applications must be returned by March 23rd.

Senate Approves Amelia Earhart U.S. Post Office Act

Photo by National Aeronautics and Space Administration

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate last night approved the Amelia Earhart U.S. Post Office Act, which would rename Earhart’s hometown post office in Atchison, Kansas, in her honor. The legislation was introduced by U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) in the Senate and Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) in the House in November 2017.

“Amelia Earhart was one of the great pioneers of our nation, whose story began at home in Atchison,” said Senator Roberts. “She is an inspiration to all aviators and a role model to women around the world. Renaming this post office is one more way to honor her incredible legacy.”

“Although she was tragically lost at sea while attempting a flight around the world, Amelia Earhart’s legacy still soars today,” said Congresswoman Jenkins. “Growing up in Kansas, Amelia Earhart’s courageous actions inspired me, and many others, to dream big and accomplish lofty goals. It is only right that we rename her hometown post office in her honor, to continue her legacy and inspire future generations.”

The legislation now goes to the House for approval before being signed into law.

Before Amelia Earhart became an aviation hero, she grew up in her family’s home – called the Otis house after her grandfather – and lived there until the age of twelve. Although she lived in several different cities, she always considered Atchison her hometown and the town is proud to be one of the few tangible associations with the legend.

St. Joseph Public Library receives grant to support summer reading program

The St. Joseph Public Library was recently awarded grant funding to support this year’s summer reading program.

The Offices of Secretary of State John R. Ashcroft awarded a $15,432 grant to the library.

East Hills Library Youth Services Manager Jess Gould said the grant allows the library to offer programs that provide free books or expand on reading-related educational themes.

“It’s providing resources that otherwise we would not have available,” Gould said. “We have a very limited budget and a lot of the things that we spend money on are already critical to the implementation of the program, so this is just icing on the cake of adding cooler resources, some more exciting things that we can offer and definitely use throughout the years to come.”

This is the second year the St. Joseph Public Library has received funding through the grant. It is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

This year’s summer reading program theme is “Libraries Rock” and will run June 1st to August 1st.
