St. Joseph Aquatic Park opening delayed

Due to repair work in progress, the opening date of the Aquatic Park has been delayed.

According to a press release from the City of St. Joseph, during preparations for the upcoming season, inspections of the pool revealed leaks in several areas of both the pool and pool filtering system. Once the repairs are completed, aquatic staff will then begin filling the pool and properly treating the water. When the Aquatic Park does open, the diving boards, slides and lap pool will remain closed for the season.

Krug Pool is expected to open for the season on June 1, contingent upon weather and water temperatures. While the Aquatic Park is closed for repairs, the hours of operation at Krug Pool will be Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Once the Aquatic Park opens, Krug Pool will return to normal operating hours which are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 6 p.m.

Once an opening date for the Aquatic Park has been confirmed, that information will be shared with the public through the media, social media and the city’s website at stjoemo.org.

SJSD website offers information on Master Facilities Plan and opportunity for public input

The St. Joseph School District recently launched the first steps of its Master Facilities Plan process.

The plan process includes taking a look at school district buildings, systems and more.

Superintendent of Schools Doug Van Zyl said the process began last fall when the Board of Education hired an architectural group, along with a demographic team to do studies.

“(They have) been walking through our facilities, taking a look at what we have, what issues and concerns are there, taking a look at capacities and system’s determined age and just concerns and items in those areas,” Van Zyl said. “Then the demographics team gathered all the information to take a look at growth, projections of growth or decline of growth, where populations within our community are moving or leaving.”

Information from the studies will be presented at the next board meeting.

Van Zyl said as part of community engagement in the Master Facilities Plan process, there will be opportunities for public input through surveys and more. The first introductory survey was posted this week.

“Some background about, who you are in the district, your involvement, do you have kids, do you not have kids and then just some general thoughts in that first survey,” Van Zyl said. “More in-depth surveys will come out probably about specifics as we continue to go forward, but we wanted to at least start the process… and we’ll continue to communicate that as it goes forward so they can see how easy it is to share their input and be involved so that we can get a lot of engagement.”

Van Zyl said schools are the backbone of the community, which is why it’s important to have public input with the process.

“To have high-quality public schools within your community, I think, benefits everybody as a whole from property values to attracting businesses, to having high-quality people enter the workforce, school districts help the community thrive and grow,” Van Zyl said.

USDA working on regulations on growing hemp

By BRENT MARTIN

St. Joseph Post

Hemp production got a big boost in the latest Farm Bill passed by Congress.

Now, the United States Department of Agriculture just needs to decide how to regulate it.

Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, Greg Ibach, says his department is working on regulations.

“Trying to figure out how we’re going to be able to roll out something for the 2020 growing season. We’re going to utilize the provision in the Farm Bill that allows us to extend the 2014 provisions for hemp rules to those states that already have those in place for this growing season,” Ibach tells farm broadcasters.

Ibach, former Nebraska State Agriculture Director, says the USDA isn’t approving any state plans yet, until it completes the federal regulations.

“So, we have a lot of variation out there between states and how they have set up their internal rules and regulations, how they do testing,” Ibach says. “So, we’re spending time right now not only talking to states, but talking to the hemp industry as well to try to understand what’s the best attributes of some of those state plans to incorporate into a federal regulatory process.”

Ibach says he hopes to approve state plans before next year.
