Saint Luke’s Health System to acquire six Mosaic Life Care facilities in KC

Saint Luke’s Health System, in conjunction with Mosaic Life Care, announced Tuesday it will assume ownership of six Mosaic Life Care clinics in Kansas City.

“Saint Luke’s is committed to providing high quality care to patients across the Kansas City metro in the communities where they work and live,” said Melinda L. Estes, MD, president and CEO of Saint Luke’s Health System. “Acquiring these six facilities will allow us to immediately expand and improve access to Saint Luke’s care for families in the Northland.”

According to a news release, this acquisition represents the latest in a series of strategic expansions for the health system. In the last 24 months, Saint Luke’s has dramatically increased its presence in Kansas City, opening two Saint Luke’s Multispecialty Clinics at Mission Farms and Blue Springs and 13 Convenient Care clinics housed inside Hy-Vee and Price Choppers around the metro. On Dec. 13, Saint Luke’s broke ground on the new Saint Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute designed to be a destination hospital offering the most advanced therapies and equipment for rehabilitation patients in the region.

Tuesday’s announcements pave the way for Mosaic to achieve a tighter focus on delivering health care for the 41-county service area in and around the St. Joseph-based hospital. Mosaic Life Care will continue to grow its local presence and infuse capital into the St. Joseph campus. Several projects are on the docket, including expansion and relocation of its Intensive Care Unit and a greater focus on cancer care and women’s health. Additionally, like its efforts in Kansas City, Mosaic Life Care will continue pursuits to provide innovative health care in its communities.

“These transactions are a win for Mosaic Life Care, a win for Saint Luke’s, and most importantly, a win for our patients,” said Mark Laney, MD, CEO, Mosaic Life Care. “Saint Luke’s is a trusted provider with an excellent reputation and comprehensive capabilities. The integration of health clinics and a hospital system just makes a great deal of sense—financially, but more importantly, for the best patient experience.”

Saint Luke’s will acquire the following facilities from Mosaic Life Care:

Highland Plaza, Parkville, Platte City, Smithville, Burlington, and Shoal Creek.

At this time, Mosaic Life Care will continue clinic operations at the Excelsior Springs and Kearney locations. Financial details of the Saint Luke’s Health System – Mosaic Life Care transaction are not being disclosed.

As part of the transaction, Saint Luke’s will acquire the Mosaic Life Care physicians and office staff at each facility and anticipates little or no impact to employees, which should result in a seamless transition of care for current patients. Saint Luke’s and Mosaic Life Care anticipate the change of ownership to be completed by the end of April 2018.

Livingston County Sheriff’s Office holding toy give away

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is giving away toys to any parents or grandparents in need of gifts this holiday season.

Sheriff Steve Cox said due to some generous area residents and businesses, the Sheriff’s Office has toys and stuffed animals available for anyone who may need them.

“Some people that we became friends with and an area business or two wanted to give us some things to help out however we could use them,” Cox said. “We had a staff meeting and decided that we wanted to have a open toy and stuffed animal give away. Hopefully we can help some people make some lifelong memories.”

The toys are new and unwrapped and for children approximately age seven and under. They are available to pick up between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office at 901 Webster St. in Chillicothe. Sheriff Cox said they are giving away the toys until they are gone.

The Sheriff’s Office said all they ask is that anyone coming to the office for toys be a Livingston County resident, come without children and pick out two toys and two stuffed animals for each child.

The Sheriff’s Office also does a Secret Santa program every year for people who are going through difficult times. Sheriff Cox said they work to build relationships with people in the community and help others through their holiday programs.

“Honestly it probably is more therapeutic for our staff than the people that we help,” Cox said. “Every day we often see the worst in humanity, people at their worst, people with huge problems, those kinds of things, but with this, I think it’s touched every deputy’s soul… it’s just refreshing and rewarding and really makes us appreciate our job.”

Agriculture advocacy students place second in national contest

Maryville, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University students recently won second place in a national scholarship competition aimed at building the next generation of agriculture advocates.

According to a news release, students in Northwest’s agriculture advocacy class, under the instruction of Rod Barr, director of the School of Agricultural Sciences, earned the $1,000 prize in the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s national College Aggies Online (CAO) scholarship competition.

Since CAO launched in 2009, nearly 6,000 students have participated. This year’s program kicked off in early September with 30 student organizations competing in the club division as well as students competing in an individual division. The participants represented 43 states and 89 universities.

“Every year we applaud the students for being the most engaged and enthusiastic group to compete, but it seems each group outdoes the last,” Kay Johnson Smith, the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s president and chief executive officer, said. “We are thrilled to see so many individuals passionate about agriculture.”

The nine-week program is filled with assignments for individuals such as blog posts, infographics and photo contests while club members received challenges ranging from hosting farm tours and school visits to guest speakers and food drives. Assignments and challenges are geared toward helping students boost their confidence when communicating with peers about agriculture issues.

Competitors shared more than 3,000 posts about agriculture on Instagram and Twitter, earning more than 4.4 million impressions, and nearly 400 posts were shared on Facebook. More than 16,000 students and faculty members attended farm tours, guest speaker presentations, booths and other events on college campuses.

Clubs and individuals who successfully finished the program also earned the CAO Completion Emblem, which demonstrates their commitment to advocating for agriculture.
