Hillcrest’s annual Fall Ball fundraiser takes place next week

A local organization that works to help homeless families will hold its annual fundraiser next week.

Hillcrest Transitional Housing’s Field of Dreams Fall Ball features food, entertainment and live and silent auctions.

Melissa Frakes has been the Executive Director with Hillcrest for almost six months. Frakes said the Fall Ball is Hillcrest’s big fundraiser for the year.

“We really rely on the community and their support and the support has been great through the last five years, so we are looking forward to this opportunity to visit and for me it’s going to be my first opportunity to meet some of the supporters,” Frakes said. “So it’s very important to me and for us to be able to express our thanks… to visit and to talk about what Hillcrest has been doing and the successes that we’ve had and the number of families that we’ve had an impact with both physically and spiritually.”

Live and silent auctions will be a part of the Fall Ball. The event also includes guest speakers who are resident graduates.

The Field of Dreams Fall Ball takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 19th, at the St. Joseph Civic Arena.

Committee urging St. Joseph voters to pass SJSD levy

A committee is launching efforts to encourage St. Joseph voters to approve a tax levy for the St. Joseph School District on the November ballot.

The Committee to Move St. Joseph Forward is launching its campaign efforts Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 4:30 p.m. at the Felix St. Square Concession Building. Co-Chair Kristi Arthur, said after the launch, the committee will then start making rounds in the St. Joseph community to promote a yes vote on Proposition 1.

“We’ll canvas every Saturday; the 14, 21, 28 and then November 4th,” Arthur said. “We need as many people to turn out to help with those events as possible.”

Arthur said the committee was formed after the St. Joseph School District Board of Education approved putting the $1.15 ta increase on the Nov. 7 ballot. That happened after the 1Vision Special Task Force recommended the tax levy.

“A community group of over 60 community members wanted to come up with a plan to move St. Joseph forward,” Arthur said. “It’s really important for us to lift up that a group of community members developed the plan and pushed the board to put it on the ballot.”

The committee said, if the proposition is approved by voters it would generate $11.5 million each year. According to the St. Joseph School District, approval of the proposal will allow the district to eliminate a projected budget deficit, retain teaching positions, maintain low class sizes, expand the use of technology for all students and support the current educational programs.

“Bark-tober Fest” adoption special offered due to full shelter

The St. Joseph Animal Shelter is full and the Friends of the Shelter are offering an adoption special this week.

According to Animal Shelter Humane Educator Jenna Keyes, there are approximately 64 animals available for adoption.

“We are extremely full right now, kind of packed to the brim, especially in the dog portion of our kennels. So we’re just really hoping for some great adoptions through this to help open up some space for incoming animals,” Keyes said. “This is a great time to come out and adopt… Plus what cat or dog isn’t going to look adorable in their Halloween costume coming up on the 31st.”

The “Bark-tober Fest Adopt-a-thon” special will run through Sunday. All cats and dogs over the age of seven will be free to adopt and pets under the age of seven will be $20.17.

“For adoption of the senior cats and dogs, everything is free, so adopting that animal would be free,” Keyes said. “We just always remind people that even though the adoption price is free, you do still have to consider providing for that animal’s basic needs and, with the senior dogs, there may be some additional vetting that may need to be done afterwards.”

For more information, call the St. Joseph Animal Shelter at (816) 271-4877 or visit the Friends of the Animal Shelter Facebook page.

Man accused of breaking into neighbor’s home

TRAAS RONALD BURGLARY 10000 BOND

A St. Joseph man is accused of breaking into a woman’s home uninvited after sending her a sexually charged message.

Ronald Traas, 63 is charged in Buchanan County with a felony of second-degree burglary.

According to court documents, on September 17, Traas is accused of sending his neighbor a Facebook message stating what he wanted to do to her sexually. Det. Loehner with the St. Joseph Police Department reported in court documents, that the defendant and the victim had never had any kind of romantic relationship. Loehner said the message placed the woman in fear.

On Thursday, Loehner said the victim reported that she observed Traas in her home, uninvited and unwelcome.

“She was in the shower and upon leaving the bathroom observed the defendant. The victim was frightened and immediately called 911,” Loehner said. “The defendant fled the scene and sent a message…wanting to know if she was lonely.”

Police said pornography was located on the defendant’s computer. Also, authorities said women’s underwear was found in his home, including some of the victim’s underwear.

Traas is due in court Friday for an arraignment.  He’s currently out on $10,000 bail.
