Free prostate screenings filling up at Mosaic

Prostate cancer education and screenings are issues Mosaic Life Care is tackling this week and hundreds of people are signing up for free screenings.

Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Mosaic’s Exploratorium a seminar will be held on screening recommendations, common misconceptions and the latest treatment options for prostate cancer. Doctors will also tackle risk factors, such as age, race and family history.

Then on Friday, a free prostate screening will be held for the first 300 men that register. Dr. Gopichand Pendurti with Mosaic said the test is a blood draw to determine Prostate Specific Antigen.  He said no physical exam is required.

“It’s just a simple blood draw.  It takes 15 minutes,” Dr. Pendurti said. “The screening is mainly to catch people early in the course of the disease.”

Mosaic said spots for the free screenings have been filling quickly.  The hospital is recommending prostate screening for men over 40.  CLICK HERE for more information about the seminar and screening.

Michael Julian Huffer
1947-2017

Born on September 16, 1947, Michael Julian Huffer, also known as, “Mike” or “Iron Mike,” as he laughingly nicknamed himself passed away suddenly on Friday night, September 22, 2017. Mike was a simple man. He was content with very little and always happiest when visiting, laughing with friends and family and playing music. At a very early age in life, Mike recognized he was blessed with the gift of music and this became his passion. He completed his studies and earned a degree in sociology at Missouri Western State University. Although, his one true passion in life would always be his love for music and entertainment. He played piano, bass guitar, B3 Hammond organ, and had a strong voice that barely needed a microphone. Some of his favorite musicians were Nat King Cole, Louis Prima, The Blue Brothers, Louie Armstrong, James Brown, Johnny Mathis, and a countless number of old blues and jazz bands. Mike will be remembered for his unique musical talent and his ability to connect with people and develop friendships everywhere he went. He was also a man of God who embraced people of all religions. He regularly attended both a Jewish synagogue and played in a band at a Christian church. He had a heart miles deep; he kept a prayer journal with long lists of people that he’d pray for every morning. He knew the power of prayer and prioritized it in his life. Mike’s daughter Sarah was the “apple of his eye” whom he cherished and passed along his gifts of music, generosity, and love of people. He was always quick to brag about Sarah because of the extraordinary amount of love he had, and will continue to have for her. Mike treated his son-in-law Seth as if he were his own, and he was overwhelmed with joy when his grandson Nixon Jude came into this world on June 26, 2015. He purchased a children’s book club membership and to this day, Sarah and Seth receive a monthly book addressed to “Master Nixon Hobart.” This is just one of many examples of how Mike expressed his kindness, and love to those close to him. Mike was one of 9 siblings in total. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tura Fanning and Forest Huffer; brothers David Huffer, Lewis Mules; and sisters Joy Homan, Jeanette Kontomitras, and Carmen Huffer. Survivors include his daughter Sarah Hobart, son-in-law Seth, grandson Nixon Jude, sister Deanna Potts, brothers John Huffer, Thomas Huffer, numerous cousins, nieces, and his “honorary granddaughter” Paige Schubert. Funeral Services will be 10 am Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday, at the Rupp Funeral Home, The interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery. online condolence and obituary www.ruppfuneral.com

Sheriff urges farm safety with influx of harvest machinery

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to keep an eye out for farm machinery with harvest in full swing.

Sheriff John Merchant said a lot of the farm machinery takes up much of the roadway, especially on rural country roads. He’s urging drivers to keep harvest in mind, especially when cresting hills as it can be hard to see what’s on the other side.

“Many accidents happen in the early morning or later afternoon hours when the sun is just rising or setting, causing blind spots. Also accidents occur when drivers are trying to pass machinery as view of the farmer can become obstructed due to the equipment,” Merchant said.

Merchant is asking motorists to take their time and drive safely.

“Sometimes motorists feel they are behind schedule and try to make up time on the road and try
to pass in unsafe locations,” Merchant said. “Remember, safety first, accidents can be avoided and we are asking your cooperation in making this harvest a safe one.”

Backpack Buddies is the supplemental weekend feeding program of Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Children are provided with a healthy breakfast, a healthy lunch and a healthy snack each weekend during the school year, including extended breaks. Children receive food based on four rotating menus that are offered throughout the year. Nodaway County Backpack Buddies partners with the Ministry Center in Maryville, serves all public elementary schools in Nodaway County and provides meals to 288 children during the school year.

In recent years, the NSDA has raised about $1,000 annually, which is enough to provide backpacks of food to seven students for the entire school year.

“The group would love to give even more to the community,” said Kelli Wilmes, a nutrition and dietetics instructor at Northwest. “They are excited for the addition of yoga to the race and look forward to the event. This a way for our organization to give back to a food-focused program in the community.”

Amazonia road closure at Myrtle set for Monday in St. Joseph

Amazonia Road will be closed starting Monday where it connects to Myrtle Avenue for new intersection work at that location.

In conjunction with that work, Myrtle Avenue will be removed from Amazonia Road to St. Joseph Avenue and will not be replaced. Amazonia Road will connect directly into Krug Park Drive. The side road that parallels Krug Park Drive on the south will also be removed during construction and will not be replaced.

The city said the work should take approximately 3-4 weeks, weather dependent, to complete and is associated with the Cook Road Extension Project. As part of the completion of this work, Krug Park Drive will be cold milled and overlaid into the park area at the circle and approximately 100 feet each direction into the park entry and exit.

The city asks people to exercise caution while in work zones to ensure their own safety and that of crews working.
