Mary Ann Schrick, 92, of Nortonville, KS, passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 at the Village Villa Nursing Home, Nortonville, KS.

Mary Ann was born April 17, 1927 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Charles and Josephine “Dolly” (Fuhrman) Hiebsch. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica. Mary Ann worked for Horton Garment Factory for a couple of years before becoming a housewife and homemaker. She and Herman also had a dairy farm in Effingham, KS. She grew up in the St. Louis Good Intent parish and then became a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church where she served on the Altar Society. Mary Ann founded the Sunflower 4-H Club and was a member of the Busy Bee Club, Bunco Club in Effingham, KS, and enjoyed bingo, gambling and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Mary Ann married Herman Schrick on November 15, 1944 at the St.Louis Catholic Church in Good Intent. He preceded her in death in 1993. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Cody (RJ Corneilson) Topeka, KS, Nancy Marlatt, Effingham, KS, a sister Dorothy Craig, Wellington, KS, two grandchildren, Christina Hunt (Timmy Atkins), Tracy (Dennis) Redding, three great grandchildren, Cody (Ashley) Hunt, Macon (Shane) Paulo, Morgan (Eric) Vincent, two great great grandchildren, Arina Jo Vincent, Emberlynn May Hunt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Jim Schrick, a sister, Margaret Hiebsch.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 4, 2019 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jeremy Heppler as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM, Friday, May 3, 2019 at the church with visitation following until 8:00 PM. Nancy Irene Christie (Kelley)
1943 – 2019

Nancy Irene Christie, 75, of Effingham, KS, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Becker Chapel in Effingham, KS. Burial will follow in the Old Huron Cemetery. Nancy was born on May 2, 1943 in Horton, KS, the daughter of Robert Floyd and Zelda May (Rickell) Kelley. Nancy graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham and had attended nurses training in Kansas City. Nancy later worked in Horton at Pat’s Thriftway in the meat department for over 15 years. Nancy enjoyed tending her rose garden; bowling, having bowled at local, state, and national levels; and she enjoyed traveling with a lifelong friend from high school. Nancy especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Nancy and Robert ‘Bob’ Christie were married on December 7, 1962 in Effingham. Bob preceded her in death on March 24, 2013. Together they celebrated 50 years of marriage. Nancy was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Christie.

Survivors include two sons, David (Rhonda) Christie and Dean (Leslie) Christie, both of Effingham; brother, Harry Kelley, Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren, Lacey Christie, Cody Bennett, Kaylee Bennett, Kori Bennett, Amy Russell and Gabrielle Schuetz; four great grandchildren. Katie Russell, William Russell, Brooks Russell, and Brecken Bennett.

 

Susan D. Welch
1955 – 2019

Susan D. Welch, 63, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

She was born on October 24, 1955 to Robert and Ann Harris. Susan married Michael Welch on July 20, 1991.
She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Susan enjoyed traveling, relaxing on the beach, softball, bowling, and just being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew.

Brian Scott Meredith
1974 – 2019

Brian Scott Meredith,44, beloved son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, nephew and cousin, who was a strong believer, went to be with the Lord, Monday, April 29, 2019.

He was born May 30, 1974 in Duluth, Georgia. Brian was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He truly loved the Lord.
He enjoyed fishing, watching Nascar and the St. Louis Cardinals. Brian also enjoyed playing with his niece and nephews. He was wonderful with children and was known to be especially generous, as his heart was larger than life itself. Brian “Scotty” Meredith will be sorely missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles Meredith, Charlie and Willie Mae Miller.
Survivors include parents, Wayne and Wanda (Miller) Meredith; sister, Rebecca Lobina (Danny); niece, Kaitlyn Evans; nephews, Spencer and Gabriel Lobina; and grandmother, Elizabeth Meredith.

Richard Lee Daniels
1960 – 2019

Richard Lee Daniels 59, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019 in Saint Joseph.

He was born February 3, 1960 in Compton, California, son of Mary & Vernon Daniels. He worked as an Auto Body man for many years, most recently at Gary’s Body Shop. He loved spending time with his family, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and anything outdoors, as well as Nascar and drag racing.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Daniels.

He is survived by mother, Mary Daniels of Saint Joseph, MO, companion, Theresa Adkins of the home, six children: Brandon Daniels, Stephanie (Gus) Benight, Brandy Daniels, Jennifer Daniels, Joshua (Rebecca) Quimby, and Savannah Blake, two step son, Joshua (Rena) Adkins and Justin Adkins, numerous grandchildren, several great grandchildren, four brothers, Douglas Daniels, Michael Daniels, Robert (Deanna) Daniels, and John Daniels, sisters, Beth Boone, Teresa (Larry) Douglas-Ford, and Shelly Daniels, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Thursday with a Celebration of Life to start at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the Noyes Home. He will be cremated following the services under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

 

Dianne Kay Phillips
1944 – 2019

Dianne Kay Phillips 75, of Savannah, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019 in Saint Joseph.

She was born February 6, 1944 in Lima, OH, daughter of Ruth and Dale Gossard. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, gardening, cooking, being at the beach and in the woods. Dianne was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lynn Gossard.

Survivors include, children, James (Kathy) Anglin and Nicholas (Chantel) Anglin, sister, Karen Miller, grandchildren, Crystal (Tyson), Tina (Adam), Joshua, William, Wesley, Kendall, Delana, and Lilyanna, great-grandchildren, O’Lyvia, Tyson, Bryson, Abel, Dominic, and Isabella, 2 nieces and 2 nephews.

Ms. Phillips has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

 

Carol Jean Hopkins
1954 – 2019

Carol Jean Hopkins, 65, of Highland, KS died unexpectedly Sunday evening at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

She was born April 7, 1954 in Wathena, KS to Rex and Betty Jean Hinson Wheeler. Carol grew up in Wathena, KS and attended Wathena Grade School until moving to Denton, KS in 1967. She graduated from Midway High School with the Class of 1972. Carol married her high school sweetheart and dancing partner for life, Roger Hopkins, August 25, 1973 in the Denton United Methodist Church. Carol was a mother first to her beloved sons, Bob and Bill. She was a homemaker, and worked at various businesses throughout the years in Highland and surrounding areas. Some of these businesses include Tom Miller Implement, Todd Drugs, City of Highland, and Carol’s Hallmark in Hiawatha. Carol enjoyed antiques, crocheting, knitting, oldie’s music, and old quilts. She and Roger also enjoyed driving through the countryside looking at cattle in the pastures, looking at the pretty country fields, and enjoying the landscape.

Carol was preceded in death by her baby dogs; Patty and Toby.

She is survived by Roger of the home, two sons; Bob (Sharon) Hopkins of Springfield, VA and Bill Hopkins of White Cloud, KS, grandsons; Samual and Benjamin Hopkins of Springfield, VA, sister; Mabel Ann (Gary) Laipple of Wathena, KS, and three nephews; Matthew, Brett, and Wyatt Laipple.

Graveside Services are planned for 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Highland Cemetery. Angie Cluck will officiate.

Mary Lou Jackson
1930 – 2019

Mary Lou (Putnam) Jackson, 88, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Shady Lawn Living Center in Savannah, Missouri.

Mary Lou was born on a farm near Bedford, Iowa on December 18, 1930, to Virgil and Mary (Livingston) Putnam. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1949, and attended Northwest Missouri University in Maryville. Afterwards, Mary Lou worked in Shenandoah, Iowa where she met Duane Jackson in 1951, and they were married on September 20, 1953 in Bedford, Iowa, following his discharge from the Army.

Mary Lou and Duane enjoyed nearly 60 years together as husband and wife, starting in Iowa, then Kansas, and finally in St. Joseph, Mo for more than 50 years at their home on King Hill Avenue, where Duane preceded her in death in 2013. After moving to St. Joseph in 1961, Mary Lou worked at the Stockyards Bank followed by 21 years in the St. Joseph school district at Bode, Central and Benton, retiring in 1993.

While working full-time in the 60’s and 70’s, Mary Lou also gave piano lessons in her home to more than 30 students on weekends and evenings, including her own children, Mark and Janet. She was an accomplished musician, deeply loved the Lord and her church, and devoted much of her time and talents to playing the piano and organ at church services and special occasions.

Growing up on the farm in Iowa, Mary Lou, along with her older sister Margaret Mae and younger brother Howard, spent many an evening singing and playing instruments, while their parents, Virgil and Mary, encouraged and applauded their efforts. These sessions carried over to the trio’s later years, where they still enjoyed getting together to make music and sing hymns, led by Mary Lou on piano. One of her best memories was receiving a “1” at Iowa state music contest, where she performed Chopin’s “Polonaise”, and was surprised by her father, Virgil, who flew in on his plane from the farm to witness her performance.

Mary Lou never worried about herself and always put her family, friends and faith first. She always went the extra mile to work hard and serve others from her days on that Iowa farm until her later years, aiding her husband Duane in every way as his health declined. Helping and giving to someone else made her happy and more fulfilled than anything. Her only grandchild, Lance, was so special and meant the world to her. Mary Lou was a wonderful mother, sister, wife and daughter. She will be missed by everyone who knew her and had the good fortune to experience her generosity and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Mary Putnam; sister, Margaret Mae Trout; nephew, James Trout; and husband, Duane Jackson.

Survivors: son, Mark Jackson (Margit), Austria/Kurdistan; daughter, Janet Olson (Daniel), Oklahoma; grandson, Lance Olson, Oklahoma; brother, Howard Putnam (Kris), Nevada/North Carolina; nephews, Mike Putnam (Robin), N. Carolina, Robert Trout (Marie), Missouri, Keith Jackson (Lori), N. Carolina, Kurt Jackson (Lynn), Missouri; nieces, Sue Putnam, Nevada, Jennifer Jackson and Belinda Jackson, Montana

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Rupp Funeral Home with interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Skidmore, Mo. Visitation will be Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

 

Coy Delyn Stenning
1949 – 2019

Coy Delyn Stenning 69, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019 in Saint Joseph.

She was born May 6, 1949 in Maryville, Missouri, daughter of the late Kathleen & Clarence Hill. She graduated from Savannah High School, class of 1968. She worked at Missouri Methodist Hospital, then married Kenneth on Nov. 14, 1970. Coy always thought of others first, and will be missed by many.

Survivors include: her husband, Kenneth Stenning, son, Ryan Stenning both of St. Joseph, MO, brother, Garney (Linda) Hill, Gladstone, MO, nieces, Angela (David) Lakey and Sara (Brandon,) nephew, Matthew (Courtney) Hill, 7 great nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, aunt, Beverly Hill, and an uncle, Olin Hill.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home, Memorial Services following Friday, May 3, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Rupp Funeral Home. She will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

Donald Roy Estep
1935 – 2019

Donald Roy Estep, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away April 26, 2019.

Donald was born to Leland Roy and Inez (Price) Estep, at his home in Union Star, Missouri on November 30, 1935. He attended Blue District 25 through 8th grade. He graduated high school as Valedictorian of the Union Star High School class of 1953. He graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1957 with a degree in Agri-Business. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity and the Alpha Zeta Scholastic Fraternity. From 1958-1960 Donald served in the U.S. Army, working in the Counter Intelligence Corps. He then returned to the family farm to become an active farmer until 1990, when his beloved mother suffered a stroke. In 1992, when he lost his mother, he then embraced the life of an Antique Vendor and Collector until the very end.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include, his cherished Antique Vendor/Collector Friends, near and far. Also, by his cousins, Judy Bayles, Colleen (Fred) Baumert, David Bauman, Wanda Sue Estep and Jay Estep.

Cremation entrusted to Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Christy Carolyn Dareing, 60, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019.

She was born November 25, 1958. Christy loved to laugh and was always enjoyed listening to music. She was loved and cared for dearly by her family and friends.

Survivors include her father; Ray Dareing, mother; Wynona Doty (John), brother; Michael Dareing, sister; Mendy, and numerous cousins and family members.

Carol F. Housh
1950 – 2019

Carol F. Housh, 69, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019.

She was born March 1, 1950 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Stanley and Aileen Fishman. She married Robert “Bob” W. Housh on August 25, 1974. She was a member of the B’Nai Sholem Temple, and formerly a member of the St. Joseph Junior League, P.E.O Chapter FL, past board member of the YWCA, B’Nai Sholem Board of Directors, Sisterhood B’Nai Sholem, and a board member of United Jewish Fund of St. Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Harvey “Hank” M. Fishmen.

Survivors include husband, brother-in-law; Jay Housh (Rachelle) Overland Park,Kansas; niece, Jamie Housh Kansas City, Missouri, along with numerous cousins.

Tom S. Terry
1950 – 2019

Tom S. Terry, 68, of Mayetta, died peacefully Saturday, April 27, 2019 at his home.

He was born September 18, 1950 in Topeka, the son of Steve Terry, Jr. and Alice Katherine Grice Terry. He graduated from Seaman High School. Tom was a member of Operators Union Local 101. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and everything outdoors. He had coached his children in softball, baseball and wrestling and participated in many golf and fishing tournaments. He was a Union operator for masonry construction. He married Lana Mettler in 1971. She survives, of the home.

Tom was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include three daughters, Angie Anderson (Bill), Topeka, Amy Sender, Hoyt and Jana Beck (Jason), Lillian, AL; a son, Bud Terry (Caitlin), Topeka; his mother, Katherine Terry, of the home; one brother, Tony Terry (Carolyn), Plainville; two sisters, Jo Flowers (Aldred), Topeka and Debbie Langley (Paul), Eskridge; seven grandchildren, Auston, Aleigha, Emily, Sammie, Beau, Bryler and Reed, and one great granddaughter, Ava.

Tom will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt, where a visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd at the Hoyt Cemetery. Family and friends will meet by 1:30 at the funeral home on Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. There will be a celebration of Tom’s life at the family home following the graveside services. Donna Thompson
1939 – 2019

On April 26, 2019, Donna Mae (Buckles) Thompson passed comfortably, surrounded by family.

Donna was born to Earnest and Opal (Kissire) Buckles on May 10, 1939. She was the tenth child of thirteen and referred to herself as the “runt of the litter”. Donna married Sam Thompson on December 7, 1957, and they were extremely proud of the family they built. She was a talented writer, with several poems and short stories published, and was an avid reader. In addition, Donna was the youngest District Manager for Clairol in the 1960’s. Later in life, she was a fierce advocate for children and families in need. Through her work with Division of Family Services, Donna had the privilege of traveling to Jefferson City to work directly with legislators to amend and improve child abuse and neglect laws in the early 1980’s. She was most proud of her family. Donna and Sam had several additional “children and grandchildren” they acquired, not by birth, but by love. Everyone was welcome at their home and Donna especially loved cooking and baking for her family. They always told their children, “We’re all in this together.” They taught them to love fiercely, and be kind and compassionate.

Donna was preceded in death by her beloved, Sam, her parents, six brothers, four sisters, and her fur babies, Cassie and Buddy.

She is survived by her children: Sam (Angie) Thompson, Kelly (Marsha) Thompson, Dawn (Kevin) Berryman. Grandchildren: Chrystal (James) Haworth, Anna (Shannon) Johnson, Rachel (Michael Casey) Thompson, Summer (Loon Allen) Berryman, Jaycee Roe, Danae Berryman and Kiley Roe.

Great grandchildren: Isabella Huston, Tavan Minear, Adele Johnson, Valerie Allen and Jaxxson Johnson. Honorary Grandsons: Gage White and Austin Day. Dearly Loved Friend: Raynelle Ackerley.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nursing and social work providers at St. Joseph Senior Living and Three Rivers Hospice for the compassionate care they extended to Donna and her family.

Services will be Thursday, May 2, 2019, at 10:30 am at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon, Wednesday, May 1, 2019. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Catherine L. Byers
1926 – 2019

Catherine (Katie) Louise Byers, 93, of St. Joseph, passed away April 10. 2019 at a Living Community of St. Joseph.

She was born February 1, 1926 to the late John and Catherine (Maney) Fuson in St. Joseph, MO. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of St. Anne’s Altar Society. She was a twenty year volunteer at the Open Door Food Kitchen.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; Donald Byers, brothers; Jack, Bill, Glenn, Tom, Harry and Robert Fuson and sister, Virginia Fuson.

She is survived by her sister, Rose Mary Carney of Iowa City, IA; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Byers has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM, Thursday, May 2, 2019 at our chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Open Door Food Kitchen in Catherine’s memory.

 

Robert Edward Thornton III
1958 – 2019

Robert “Bob” Edward Thornton III, 60, of St Joseph passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at his home.

He was born October 9, 1958 in St. Joseph, son of Patricia and Robert Thornton Sr. He attended Central High School. He is a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Altec Industries for the past 23 years. Bob was an avid Atlanta Falcons football fan, and he was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Bob was preceded in death by father, Robert Edward Thornton Sr, and daughter, Nina Thornton.

Survivors include, mother, Patricia Thornton of St Joseph, son, Josh (Danae) Thornton of St Joseph, son, Brandon (Spencer) Thornton of St. Joseph, and sister, Penny (Mike) Capps of St Joseph.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Rupp Funeral Home, Reverend Scott Gilbert officiating. Jack Carl Scott II
1964 – 2019

Jack Carl Scott II 54, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, April 25, 2019 at his home in St. Joseph.

He was born December 1, 1964 in Denver, Colorado, son of the late Katherine & Jack Scott Sr. He graduated from Lafayette High School, and he worked in the casino industry for 17 years, most recently at the Argosy Casino in Kansas City as a dealer. He enjoyed camping, and his Colorado trips. He was a talented artist, and political junkie and a good debater. He was a Catholic.

Jack is survived by sisters, Terri Scott & Kathy Russell both of Saint Joseph, MO, and Gail (Paul) Bodde, Platte City, MO, partner and love of his life, Tim Veraguth of the home, as well as numerous nieces & nephews, and great nieces & nephews of which he loved dearly.

Florence Marie Sale 80, of Saint Joseph, MO passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at her home.

She was born September 1, 1938 in Clarksdale, MO, daughter of the late Glatha and Ira Grimes. She graduated from Faucett High School, and she married Earl Sale on August 17, 1963, he survives of the home. She worked at Einbenders Clothing, Sears and Roebuck, Southwestern Bell, and Benton High School. She enjoyed singing in the St. James Church Choir, distributing communion as an extra ordinary minister to the St. James Parishioner shut-ins. She was a caregiver to many senior citizens in the parish, and was very generous to many charitable organizations. Florence was a member of St. James Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary Post 359, and St. James Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Angela Marie Sale, brother, Robert Fisher, and sister, Ruth Foote.

Survivors include husband, Earl William Sale of the home, daughter, Lisa Irene Harvey, Knoxville, TN, brother, Leon (Mary Ellen) Fisher, sisters, Mary (Ernest) Grimes, Roberta (Virgil) Stanton, and LaVerne Gerlt, sister in law, Dorothy Larkin, six grandchildren: Kyle Massing, Lauren, Brandon, Tyler, Chelsey and Haley Harvey, two great grandsons, Tyson & Eli, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 11:00 am at the St. James Catholic Church, (Gymnasium), Father Evan Harkins Celebrant. The Rosary will be recited at 5:00 pm, Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday.
