Forrest James “Jim” Simpson, 82, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, April 5, 2013 at Carriage Square.
Jim was born March 26, 1931 to Forrest J. “Pat” and Inez (Wells) Simpson in Helena, Missouri.
He graduated from Savannah High School in Savannah, Missouri in 1949 and joined the Missouri Air National Guard in St. Joseph the same year. In 1951 he was deployed to France with the 180th Bombardment Group during the Korean Conflict and served as a gunner on the B26 aircraft. When returning home in 1952 he was employed with the National Biscuit Company and later by the Air National Guard in 1954 as a purchasing and contracting officer. He continued his flight status as a load master and refueling boom operator on the KC97 aircraft before retiring in 1988 as a Senior Master Sergeant after serving 39 years.
Mr. Simpson was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and former member of Hyde Valley United Methodist Church, and the American Legion Post 359.
Jim married Shirley Myers on February 6, 1953. She survives of the home.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Debra Deann.
Survivors: son, Jimmie Simpson (Cathy) of Smithville, Missouri; daughter, Patricia Cooksey (David) of Savannah, Missouri; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Simpson (Helen) of St. Joseph; sister, Ann Hitson of Phoenix, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucy Elizabeth (Greenwell) Foster, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, April 5, 2013 at the age of 102 at a local healthcare facility.
She was born January 20, 1911 in Norfolk, Virginia, where she attended Maury High School, to William R. and Eva E. (Woodhouse) Greenwell.
She married Byron Foster in 1938. He preceded her in death.
A Christian, Lucy was a member of Bayside Christian Church and attended McCarthy Baptist Church while in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Known and loved by all for her sense of humor and pranks, she will be greatly missed by all who came in contact with her.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Geneva Hofheimer and Ann Greenwell; and son-in-law, Dr. John Feuerbacher.
Survivors: daughter, Leigh Feuerbacher; grandchildren, William (Christine) James and Leigh Ann; great-grandchildren, Paden and Grace; sister, Emma Ellis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; brother, William (Lee) Greenwell of Poquoson, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James A. Monaghan, Jr., 65, St. Joseph, Missouri died Friday, April 5, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
He was born September 30, 1947 to James and Marie Monaghan, Sr., in St. Joseph, Missouri.
James married Judy Ann Mattice on September 16, 1972. She survives of the home.
Mr. Monaghan worked for Johnson Controls and retired after twenty years of service. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Black Powder Rifle Association.
He enjoyed hunting and camping, the company of his cats and he also held multiple Bachelor’s degrees in various disciplines.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and a brother, Gary Monaghan.
Survivors: wife; parents; brother, Roger Monahan; daughter, Marie Kingsley (Jeremy); grandchildren; Alishia Tiller, Audrea Tilley (Mikel Helton), Alexis Evans, Autumn Evans, Dakota Horn, and Devin Adams; and nieces, Amy and Rebecca Monaghan.

Suzanne (Schiesl) Meierhoffer, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri died Saturday, April 6, 2013 at her home.
She was born December 20, 1920 to Edwin John and Verdi Marie (Stout) Schiesl in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Suzanne moved to South Chicago when her father was transferred with Swift and Company and attended St. Sabina and St. Theresa grade schools. Upon returning to St. Joseph, she attended high school at Convent of the Sacred Heart; graduating from Central High School, class of 1938, where she was Football Queen. She then attended St. Joseph Junior College where she was Basketball Queen and was a graduate of University of Missouri Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While attending University of Missouri Columbia she was a member of Delta Gamma Social Sorority and Barn Warming Queen.
Suzanne was committed to a lifelong journey of learning; striving to cultivate her intellect and stimulate those around her. Her memberships were the Missouri Western State University Foundation Board; MWSU Ambassadors; Book Club; Runcie Club; Great Books; Junior Great Books; Calla Varner Foundation; Bible Study Group; Walter Meierhoffer Scholarship St. Joseph School District Foundation.
She married Walter Meierhoffer, Jr. on June 1, 1943 in Pensacola, Florida where Walter was assigned to Pensacola Naval Air Station as an instructor pilot. She returned to St. Joseph and worked as a secretary to the commander of the 329th Sub Depot at Rosecrans Field while her husband flew during WWII in the China India Burma Theater. Suzanne joined her husband as the vice president of Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home until his death January 10, 1992.
Suzanne was a committed member of St. Joseph Cathedral Catholic Church where she was a member of St. Anne’s Altar Society, of which she was past president; Ladies of Charity; Parish Council; vice president Cathedral School PTA; taught CCD classes; and a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Her many civic endeavors included St. Joseph (Sisters) Hospital Board of Trustees during the time a new hospital was constructed at Riverside and Faraon; Heartland Hospital Board of Trustees; Heartland Hospital Guild; Volunteer at St. Joseph Living Community; St. Joseph Symphony; Tuberculosis Society; Open Door Food Kitchen; InterServe; Red Cross Nurses Aid; Community Blood Center donor since 1946; Ladies Edelweiss Society; Sacred Heart Convent Tres Bien; St. Joseph Junior League; and her beloved Mah Jongg Group. She was an avid tennis player into her 80’s and enjoyed world travel. She relished her grand and great-grandchildren. She was at her best when she sang “Octopus Under the Sea” to them in a perfect acappella octopus voice.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bob Schiesl; sister, Mary Louise Minor; and nephew, Daniel Minor.
Survivors: children, Michael Meierhoffer (Ronda), St. Joseph, Walter Mark Meierhoffer (Linda) and Lora Meierhoffer Christian both of Leawood, Kansas; grandchildren, Scott M. He was born September 6, 1940 to Jule and Leona (Jackson) LaFave.
Mr. LaFave served in the United States Marines during Vietnam. He also owned Choices Residential Care and was an administrator of Phil Lawrence Group Home.
He was in the VFW in New Mexico and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Agnes Frakes, Victoria Wilson, Darlene Miller, and Phyllis Dowlen; seven brothers, Noah, Junior, Floyd, Richard, Rex, Clarence, and Allen.

Ellen Elizabeth (Ferguson) Robertson, 92, Parker CO, formerly of Maryville,
Mo, died on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Victorian House Hospice, Parker, CO
.

Ellen was born  April 11, 1920,  the daughter of the late John Allyn and
Sadie Elizabeth (Hardy) Ferguson. She married Oliver Robertson October 6,
1937 in Maryville who died March 16, 1991.  She then married Dale Lewellen
November 10, 1993 in Hot Springs, AK. He preceded her in death March 9,
2011.

She retired from John Coultis Interiors, Wichita,KS, as a seamstress and was
a  member of the First United Methodist Church, Maryville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Joe Robertson
(1-20-1999), brother Forrest Ferguson, sister Vonceile Ferguson, half sister
Catherine Swinford, step mother Mable Lisle Nowe, and half brother Phillip
Ferguson.

Survivors include grandson Chris Robertson, Parker, Co, sister in laws Norma
Ferguson, Rockledge, FL., Donna Robertson, Grant City, MO, and Helen Dredge,
Witchita, KS., brother in law Bill Swinford, Franklin Park, Il,  and half
brother Eugene (Shirley) Ferguson, Melbourne, FL., nieces and nephews.

Dr. Charles “Chuck” Coyne, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2013, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Chuck was born December 23, 1928, in Lake City, Iowa, to Gene and Ruth (Garnatz) Coyne.
He married Mary Krekel on September 9, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa. She survives of the home.
Chuck served in the United States Army in occupation forces in Japan.
After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Chuck taught in several towns in Iowa. During that time he earned a Master’s Degree from Truman State University. After teaching in Keokuk, Iowa, for 10 years, he moved to Denton, Texas, where he received his Doctorate of Education at North Texas State University. He then moved to Normal, Illinois, where he taught at Illinois State University. In 1968 he moved to St. Joseph where he was Dean of Applied Sciences at Missouri Western State University until he retired in 1992. After retiring, from 1993-1994, he taught English in Ventspils, Latvia.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Sunrise Optimist Club, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Missouri Unit Association of Teacher Education, National Education Association, Missouri Vocational Association, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Missouri Association of College Teacher Education, American Council of College Teacher Education, Association of Teacher Education, and Teacher Education of Colleges and Universities.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Gordon; and granddaughter, Kara Jackson.
Survivors: son, Kevin Coyne (Denise), Webster Groves, Missouri; daughters, Marlee Coyne, Overland Park, Kansas, Joan Adams (David), Lenexa, Kansas, and Jenny Jackson (Rob), Wildwood, Missouri; grandchildren, Katy, Patrick, and Erin Coyne; Sarah, Rachel, Samuel, and Hannah Adams; Jakob, Jarod, Joshua, and Riley Jackson; brother-in-law, Raymond Krekel (Christine), Pleasanton, California; sisters-in-law, Helen Krogmeier (Bob) and Mary Ann Krekel, Burlington, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Galen West, 67, Maryville Missouri, formerly of Clearmont, Missouri died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at St Francis Hospital, Maryville.

Galen was born December 10, 1945 in Maryville, Missouri, son of the late Galen Hubert West and Ella Jane (Wilson) West.

He was a 1964 graduate of West Nodaway High School and was a farmer. Galen loved animals, swap meets and trips to the Barn Door Opry.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Bobby A. Thomas, 74, St. Joseph, Missouri died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 3, 1938 to L. Gordon and Marjorie Thomas in Memphis, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gordon Thomas.
Survivors: daughters, Michele Schultz (Randy), St. Joseph, Missouri, Leslie McGuire, Olympia, Washington; son, John Thomas, Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Tyler, Zachary, Lauren, and Nicholas Schultz; sister, Shirley Pounds; and nieces and nephews.
Bob spent his early years working on ranches throughout the western states. He graduated high school in Portland ,OR. There he enlisted in the Navy. Upon returning to the Portland area he married. From there he settled in the midwestern states to raise his family and persue his career in the mail order industry. He was a self taught man who was quite successful. He served on various Boards and committees, and was highly visible in the communities he resided in.Upon retirement he joined the Peace Corp and spent 2 years in Jamaica. Evelyn Sims, 92, Mound City, Missouri died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City, Missouri.
Evelyn was born March 4, 1921 in Mound City, Missouri. She was the daughter of Albert A. and Rosa Duncan Oyerly.
She graduated from Mound City High School and attended college in St. Joseph and Maryville, Missouri.
December 25, 1941 she married Charles E. Vest of Mound City. To this union two children were born and are still living. They are Charles R. Vest (Jacquie) Ada, Oklahoma, and Vivian R. Herndon, Omaha, Nebraska. Charles E. Vest passed away October 24, 1984.
On May 31, 1986, Evelyn married Roy Sims Jr. Roy was Publisher and Editor of The Mound City News-Independent newspaper in Mound City. Roy passed away April 21, 2011.
Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents; sisters, Clara Oyerly and Helen Davis; brothers, James William and Charles A. Oyerly.

Alex M. Perez, 59, Springdale, Arkansas, died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born July 13, 1953, to Alexander Jr. and Virginia Perez in St. Joseph, Missouri. Mr. Perez married Shelly Hicklin on February 22, 1986. She survives of the home. Alex had a career in law enforcement and corrections, including the St. Joseph Police Department. After his retirement, he worked in sales. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was a former member of the St. Joseph Fraternal Order of Police and the Missouri State Police Chief Association, a former volunteer for Cole County Sheriff’s Department, and a member of the National Rifle Association. Alex was a published author, having written two novels, and was passionate about music, especially blue grass and country, and wrote many songs. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors: wife; daughters, Lindsay Katherine Perez, Kansas City, Kansas, and Hillary Robin Perez, of the home; granddaughter, Willow Alexandria Perez, of the home; sisters, Vickie McManus (Bill), Debbie Allison (Ron), and Joni Berry (Joshua); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born December 20, 1922 to George and Grace Strobel in Mound City, Missouri. J.C. married Bette M. (Allen) Strobel on August 22, 1943. She survives of the home. J.C. farmed most of his life in the Mound City area and was a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army. J.C. was also a member of Mound City United Methodist Church, Mound City, Missouri, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #121, and fifty plus years in the Mound City and Oregon Masonic Lodge as a 32nd degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Bill Wright. Survivors: wife; sister, Lucille Wright Scheuffele, Chico, California; two nieces; one nephew; and dear friends, Duane A and Linda Nauman and family. Services: 2:00 P.M. Michael Vincent Drake, 62, St. Joseph, Missouri died Friday, March 29, 2013 at his home with his loving daughter and wife by his side. He was born December 29, 1950 in Price, Utah. Michael married Dena (Berthena) McCoy on November 13, 1999. She survives of the home with their daughter, Anna Elizabeth Drake. Mr. Drake served in the United States Army during Vietnam. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he was active in the food pantry, CCD and many other parish activities. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Council #571 and a Fourth Degree Member of Knights of Columbus, Assembly #569, where he served on the honor guard. Mr. Drake was member of the former Cpl. Fred Seiffert, Post #1668, Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served in many offices including Commander and was the Captain of the ritual team. He worked with the Marine Corps League’s Toys For Tots program, assisted in distributing flags at cemeteries for Memorial day and was a member of M.O.C. at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Sherry was born January 17, 1962 in Maryville, Missouri, the daughter of
Dick and Jewell (VanSyoc) Jones.

She was a 1980 graduate of Maryville High School and recieved her BS in
Theraputic Recreation from Northwest Missouri State University in 2012.
Sherry had worked as a cashier for 20 years at Gray’s Truck Stop, Maryville.

Preceding her in death was her mother Jewell Ruth Jones (2/8/2009),
grandparents Ralph and Gladys Jones, L.V. and Mary VanSyoc, and two cousins
Dennis Jones and Jeanne Jenkins.

Surviving are son, Alex Mitchell (Samantha) Wray, Maryville, brother,
Jeffrey Duane  (Tammy) Jones, Conception, Missouri, sister, Brenda Sue
(Randy Havens) Oppie, La Monte, Missouri, father Dick Jones, Maryville,
several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 2, at the First
United Methodist Church, Maryville. Interment will be in Nodaway Memorial
Gardens, Maryville, MO.

He was born May 11, 1988 in Maryville to Rodney and Denise Merrigan James.

He was a 2006 graduate of West Nodawy High School in Burlington Jct. and was employed with Farmer Frame and Auto in Quitman, as a paint and body worker.

Kyle was preceded in death by his grandfathers: Jim Merrigan, Larry James and Robert Drummond.

Survivors are his mother and step-father Denise and Donnie Drummond, Burlington Jct.; father and step-mother Rodney and Rhonda James, Maryville; Brother Jason (Roxy) James, Ravenwood; 4 step-sisters: Tiffany Shively, Brandi Shively and Nikkayla Schulte, Maryville and Shelly (Steven) Marriott, Clearmont; step-brother Nathan (Crissy) Drummond, Tarkio; grandmothers Bereneda James, Bethany, Rosalee Merrigan and Scharlene Drummond, both of Maryville and aunts, uncles, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jones Norland Geraldine webMrs. Geraldine Mae Norland Jones, age 83, Burlington, North Carolina, died Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Burlington Manor after several weeks of failing health.

Geraldine was born April 7, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Bruno and Margaret Eleanor Norland and was married for over 24 years to Harold Howard Jones, who died in 1970. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from the Medical Center of Independence, Missouri. She was of the Methodist Faith.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughter, Lynn Hale and her husband, Charles B., of Burlington, and a daughter-in-law, Sharon West and her husband, John of Belton, Missouri, niece Margaret Wade and her husband, Lance, and a nephew David Nickolaus and wife, Nancy. Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a son Gary B. Jones; two sisters, Clarice Caldwell and Marquerite McCauley; and five brothers, Morris Nordland, Franklin, Lloyd, Wayne, and Ethan Norland.

A memorial graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Nodaway Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri. The family will recieve friends from 5-7 PM, Friday evening, March 29, at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

She was born to Herman and Ida (Wienschienk) Rothenberg.
Ann married Gerald on March 7, 1943.
Although Ann was a housewife and mother, she co-owned The Carpet Center on Frederick Avenue. During WWII, Ann was a LINK Trainer at what is now Rosecrans Memorial Airport.
Ann was a member of the Temple Adath Joseph Sisterhood, Hadassah, and B’nai B’rith. In 1975, she won the Moila Grandmothers Golf Tournament.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Survivors: son, Michael Lieppman, Deephaven, Minnesota; daughter, Liessa Lieppman, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Aaron Hinkle, Kyle Lieppman, Mara Lieppman, Lauren Lieppman; and great-grandchildren, Maisy and Julian Hinkle.

Paul Alma Hansen, Sr, 87, Skidmore, Missouri died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Nodaway Nursing Home in Maryville, Missouri.

He was born November 20, 1925, in Lamonte, Missouri to Thomas and Vivian Bailey Hansen.

Paul married Velma Peter March 25, 1944 in Troy Kansas. She preceded him in death January 5, 1999.

On June 5, 2006 Paul and Donna Cummings were united in marriage in Troy, Kansas.

A lifetime farmer, Paul was a member of the Sam Albright American Legion Post #5ll, Skidmore and was a past president of the Nodaway County Farm Bureau.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, son-in-law Jackie Lee Appleman (September 15, 2008), two brothers: Keith and Kelmer (Roberta) Hansen and sister Thelma (Charles) Johnson.

Surviving are son, Paul Hansen, Jr (Marjorie) Maryville, 2 daughters, Sherry Flanary (Paul), Maryville and Jean Appleman, Bella Vista, Arkansas; 8 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Cora Hansen Donahoo, Cole Camp, Missouri; 2 step-sons: Rick (Mickie) Cummings and Kent (Cindy) Cummings; 2 step-daughters: Jackie (John) McGee and Julie (Todd) Evans, all of Hamilton, Missouri;
