unnamedRoxanna Jane DeSpain 49, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 12, 1967 in Atchison, KS, daughter of Betty and Alfred DeSpain Sr. She graduated from Benton High School 1986 and was a homemaker. Roxy was a very giving and generous person, who enjoyed traveling, puzzle books and watching the Price Is Right on TV. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Alfred DeSpain Jr. Survivors include, sisters, Betsy DeSpain of the home, and Gloria DeSpain, St. Joseph, MO, two aunts, Goldie Baldwin and Sally Tietz, St. Joseph, MO, as well as numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am, on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Rev. Albert Shirley officiating, The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Sugar Creek Cemetery . 4172268_wlppCarol Jean Frazer 63, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday March 23, 2017 at her home. She was born December 28, 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri daughter of Mable & Roy Adams. She graduated from high school and worked at St. Joe Transit as a Bus Driver for over 18 years. She enjoyed playing darts and pool, but most especially she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her father, Roy Herman Adams, mother, Mable L. Brown, brother, Gary Adams, and sister, Barbara Jo Adams. She is survived by sons, Ronald (Sheila) Anthony, Jr. of Elwood, KS, Terence (Ciera) Anthony, and Brian (Monique) Frazer of St. Joseph, MO 17 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and one the way, brothers, Johnny Bert, David, and Jason Adams, sisters, Laura Dittemore, Rosetta Marcell, Trudy Adams, and Penny Adams. The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM Saturday, with a memorial celebration of life to start at 2:00 Saturday, March 25, 2017. She has been cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

unnamedLeslie “Les” Earl Wilson Jr, 53, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, March 24, 2017 in a Saint Joseph, MO health care center. He was born April 7, 1963 in Long Beach, CA. He attended Lafayette High School, then married Beth Mackey on June 25, 1988. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool & poker, racing video games, and he loved Rock and Roll and Classic Rock Music. He was formerly a member of the Bible Baptist Temple. Les is survived by wife, Beth Wilson of the home, mother, Patricia (Ed) Blackburn of Faucett, MO, son, Caleb Wilson, daughters, Sarah Wilson and Ananiah Wilson, brother, Dwayne Wilson, and sister, Dawn Hafley.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Rupp Chapel, Pastor Jim Mackey officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Inurnment will be at a later date. He attended Benton High School, and he worked in the construction industry. He enjoyed collecting watches & mushroom hunting, and spending time with grandkids & family. Terry was preceded in death by his father, Larry Dean Angst, mother, Charlotte Greer, and brother, Teddy Angst. He is survived by daughters, Terra Angst, Haylei Angst, and Sierra (Alva) Maul, grandchildren: Treyten, Tylei, and Khloe, sisters, Jodie (Kent) Barnett, Carla (Gary) Dozier, Judy Cottrill, Christy (Brandon) Sale, and Robin Venable, brothers; Kelly Angst, Jack Greer Jr, and Phillip Greer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM Thursday, with a Memorial Service to be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the Rupp Funeral Home. She was born November 2, 1942 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Bessie and George F. Caw Sr. She attended Myrtle Miller and married George Coon January 14, 1962. She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, crocheting, playing cards, embroidery, cooking, and gardening, she was a Christian. Elenor was preceded in death by husband, George W. “Duane” Coon, Sr., her parents, three daughters, Theresa Green, Nancy Coon, and Elvira Coon, two brothers, Wayne Caw, and Russell Caw, and a sister, Frances Caw. Survivors include, daughters, Dorothy (Mark) Bullimore, Eunice (Jeff) Angold, and Elenor D. Coon a son, George W. (Pam) Coon, Jr., a brother, Frank (Mary) Caw, all of St. Joseph, MO, 6 grandchildren: Charlie (Carol) Harris, Michael (Erin) Harris, Bo (Amanda) Jones, Phallin (Jeremy) Thornton, Joshua Coon, and Aaron Coon, 9 great grandchildren, Elissa, Mason, and Braydon Jones, Trenton, Maddox, and Harper Harris, Jadence, Jaxon, and Liam Thornton.

Norman Franklin Hayes

He was born February 18, 1937 to Robert and Mildred (Lafavor) Hayes in St. Joseph, Missouri.
He married Nancie Brinton on May 5, 1980. She survives of the home.
He worked as a die cutter for 30 plus years at Mead Paper Products Factory in downtown St. Joseph.
Mr. Hayes was a past Moila Shriner and past member of the St. Joseph Lodge No. 78, A.F. & A.M.
Norman was a great family man who loved shooting pool and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his infant sister, Gloria Hayes.
Additional Survivors include his children, Scott Hayes, Janice Krull (Greg) and Shelby Hayes-Barbin; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and sisters, Shirly Bunse and Judy Howard (Jim).

She was born August 27, 1924 in Willis, Kansas to William and Myrtle (Barber) Weir, who preceded her in death.
Shirley married John Schober July 15, 1945, he preceded her in death March 25, 2008.
She and her husband owned and operated Shirjon Antiques for over twenty years.
Shirley enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, drinking coffee and taking her naps. She always talked about what a great family she had and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. The family would like to thank Vintage Gardens and Mosaic Life Care Hospice for the great care of their mother.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, William, Jr. and Ernest Weir; sisters, Viola Page, Grace Petree, Esther Bryan, and Aletha Dove.

Bob married Judy George October 21, 1972, she survives of the home.
He was a member of The Sons Of American Revolution Group, Valley Forge Society and a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church. Bob worked for General Motors for over 34 years, retiring in 2004.
Bob loved spending time with his family and enjoyed utilizing Facebook to keep in contact with old friends. He loved all sports, especially womens’s basketball.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Fogler.
Additional survivors include daughter, Mary Brinton (Chris); grandchildren, Andrew, McKinley, and Cade Brinton; mother, Ellen Fogler.

Charlie is survived by his wife Jessie Killian whom he married on October 4, 1958.
He graduated from Central High School, Class of 1953. He was employed by Swift and Company, Spector Sporting Goods, Townsend and Wall and retired from Wyeth & Company.
He enjoyed fishing and having coffee with his buddies.

Aileen married George Hunter on May 14,1950, he preceded her in death July 22, 2006.
She was a member of Brookdale Presbyterian Church and the St. Joseph Lioness Club, and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Aileen enjoyed gardening, cooking and caring for her family. She made lots of friends at Corby Place Senior Living Center. Aileen was a loving and “mischievous” mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Maxine Allen and brothers, Warren, Newton, Jr. and Ronald Toney.
Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Hunter; son, Randy Hunter (Gladys); grandchildren, Jacob, Amber, Stephen, Shane Hunter and Terrence Fleck; nine great-grandchildren; and her cat Lucy.

Phillip Gene “Phil” Roland
1938-2017

Phillip Gene “Phil” Roland, 79, formerly of Severance, passed away at his Potter, Kansas home Thursday, March 16, 2017.
Phil was born January 2, 1938, at his parents’ home in Severance, one of eleven children born to John and Katie Foster Roland and had lived at Severance nearly all of his life where he graduated from Severance High School. He worked at various jobs during his working life: manager of at TG&Y in Kansas City, unloading grain trucks at Denton Co-op, and summers for the Noxious Weed Department for Doniphan County. He moved to Potter to make his home to be near his son in 2011.
He was a member of the Potter Community Church. Phil had served on the board for Oak Hill Cemetery, Severance for a number of years.
Survivors include six children: Marci Alexander, Phil (Mary) Roland, Randy (Deania) Roland, Jerry (Carrie) Harris, Tamara (Joe) Falvella, Sandra (Greg) Booker; a sister Phyllis Higley; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers; 6 sisters, a grandson, and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland, with Pastor Mike Jones, of Potter Community Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Severance.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Monday where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.

She was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 27, 1939 to Eric and Dorothy (Schad) Olson.
Sharon earned Bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Spanish and enjoyed working as a journalist and teacher. She loved anything Nebraska, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Sharon was smart, sassy and didn’t know a stranger. She was always interested in getting to know those she met and had a way of making them feel special.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and her former husband, Dr. John Krickbaum.
Survivors include daughter, Carol Lance (Randy Williams); son, Kurt Krickbaum (Mary Margaret Ambler); grandson, Jeremy Lance and granddaughter, Jordan Garrison (Eddie).

Nellie Pauline Chance, 93, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, March 17, 2017.
She was born December 25, 1923 in French Bottoms, St. Joseph, Missouri to Albert and Emma (Wehrman) Chance, who preceded her in death.
Nellie was a graduate of Lafayette High School and Johnson Business School. She was a bookkeeper and retired from Beatrice Foods.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Zion Evangelical Church.
Nellie enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and traveling.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Theodore and Frederick Chance; sisters, Elaine Blachly and Freda Freeman.
Survivors include nieces, Kathy Daly (John), Patty Eberly (Chris), Katrina Watkins (Richard), Debi Free (Virgil); nephews, Donald (Sherry), Victor, Brian (Joyce) and Chris Chance; numerous great nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Lucille Hall
1923-2017

unnamedDorothy Lucille Hall, 94, of Powhattan, passed away March 17, 2017, at Hiawatha Community Hospital, surrounded by her family. She previously had been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.
Lucille was born March 12, 1923, at Coffeyville, Kansas, one of six children born to Robert Francis and Nelle Douglas Martin Riley. She grew up in Neodesha where she attended schools and graduated high school there prior to attending Coffeyville Community College. Lucille worked at defense plants in Neodesha and Desoto for a time. She was granted an emergency teaching license and taught in Powhattan school system a few years. She drove a school bus many years starting in 1968 until the mid 1980’s for Powhattan and later Kickapoo Nation Schools before retiring.
Mrs. Hall was a longtime member of the Powhattan United Methodist Church; of the Order of Easter Star of Powhattan before it disbanded. She enjoyed attending Horton Senior Citizens activities. Lucille enjoyed being out of doors gardening, and experimenting raising iris of all kinds. She also enjoyed baking and cooking.
She married Irl E. Wall, Jr., September 2, 1942. They were later divorced. She married Norman Lee Hall May 25, 1947. They farmed and raised livestock near Powhattan all of their married life. He died February 26, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers Earl, Leo, Gene, Wayne; grandson Lance; and granddaughter Kristal.
Lucille is survived by three sons: Fred Hall (Charlott) of Robinson, Robert Hall (Paula) of Effingham, James Hall (Carla) of Powhattan; a daughter Judy Hall of Hiawatha; six granddaughters; two grandsons; eleven great-grandchildren; with three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Lois Johnson of Austin, Texas.
A Celebration of Lucille’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, at the Powhattan United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kevin Rea officiating. Interment will follow at Powhattan Cemetery.
Family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.

Jack Earl Stewart, 60, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday March 18, 2017.
Jack was born February 8,1957 to Earl and Betty Stewart. They preceded him in death.
Survivors include; son, Shaun Stewart; daughter, Stephanie Geary; brother, Jeff Stewart; sister, Dorothy Frank; and 2 grandchildren.

Edwena Louise Scaliatine
1962-2017

Edwena Louise Thompson Scaliatine, 54, of Hiawatha, died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Mosiac Healthcare in St. Joseph, Missouri, surrounded by her family. She previously had been a resident of Wathena Healthcare and Rehab.
She was born an only child April 16, 1962, in Kansas City, Kansas. While growing up in the Kansas City area, she attended Turner High School. She and her daughter moved to Hiawatha to make their home in 2002, with Melissa moving here in 2005.
Edwena was a homemaker, dedicated to raising her two daughters, her pride and joy.
Surviving are her daughters Krystal Scaliatine, Melissa Kampmeier, both of Hiawatha; two grandsons: Alex and Johnathan.
Edwena was preceded in death her mother Judith Mae Meikle.
Cremation is planned with a Celebration of Life service to be held at a later date.

Marge married Ralph Upshaw April 10, 1948 he preceded her in death July 11, 2015.
She was a nurse’s aid at Sisters Hospital, volunteered at Parkway Elementary Preschool and later worked in the kitchen at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Marge enjoyed cooking and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Meredith Barragar.
Survivors include daughters, Connie King (Wayne), Lisa Reece (Brian); four grandchildren, Chad King (Shannon), Brad King, (Katie), Shawn King (Jamie), Zachary Reece; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Smith and Millie Melander; brother, Everett Barragar (Marilyn); and numerous nieces and nephews.

montgomery-colorD. Louise Montgomery, 96, Mulvane, Kansas, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 at a healthcare facility in Derby, Kansas.
She was born December 1, 1920 to Claus and Iva Mae Davis. They preceded her in death.
Louise married Ronald A. Montgomery on February 14, 1941.
She was a 1938 graduate of Central High School and attended Gards Business College. She retired as a civilian employee of Ft. Leavenworth Command Staff College. Louise loved writing and took many writing courses. She was an adult reading tutor. Louise was a former member of the YWCA, Central High School PTA, and Committee Woman for the Democratic Party. Louise loved gardening and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Betty Belz; and sister, Geraldine Noland.
Survivors include daughter, Janet Montgomery; grandchildren, Stephanie Steele, Christine Adams, Brian and Patrick Belz; numerous great grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

She was born April 18, 1949 to Sanford and Kathleen (Gunter) Reed, they preceded her in death.
Linda married Edward R. Lewis May 27, 1972, he survives of the home.
She graduated from Elwood High School, Class of 1967 and later completed Cosmetology School and worked as a cosmetologist. She shifted her career to Real Estate and worked as an agent/broker for over 25 years, retiring in 2007.
Linda was a loving mother who cared for her children and grandchildren. She had a courageous laugh that made everyone laugh with her.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, gardening and loved her wild birds.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenny Reed.
Additional survivors include daughters, Carie Lewis (Matt), Kelly Dobosz (Jim); grandchildren, Corey, D’Angelo, Alexis, John, Landon, Logan and Maci; brother, Wesley Reed (Betty); numerous nieces and nephews.

4164374_wlppTeresa Kay Althouse, 57, of Fairview, passed away peacefully Monday, March 13, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Hiawatha, December 11, 1959, one of three children born to Norman and Nancy (Bloom) Brockhoff, and was a lifelong resident of the Fairview area. Teresa attended Hiawatha schools where she graduated from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1977. Teresa grew up on the farm and enjoyed doing whatever needed to be done at the time: working cattle, mowing and baling hay, etc. She attended trade school to learn to be a beautician of which she owned a beauty shop a few years prior to helping her Dad in Grandpa’s Kitchen. Teresa worked for nearly 20 years for Sac and Fox Casino working in various capacities there through the years, retiring due to poor health.
Survivors include two adored sons Jake (Caitlyn) Althouse of Topeka, Louis (Trina) Althouse of Manhattan; grandchildren Jules and Kellen; her parents Norm and Nancy Brockhoff of Fairview; brothers: Charlie (Nellie) Brockhoff, David (Vickie) Brockhoff, along with many beloved family members and friends.
Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Friday, March 17, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Reverend Sean Kilgo officiating, followed by a meal at Community Center in Fairview.
The family will meet with friends 5:30 until 7 Thursday evening at the funeral home.

He was born May 3, 1936 to Lester and Merrill Salmons.
Gene married Marlene Stanton on June 19, 1955, at Faucett Christian Church
He attended Savannah High School. Gene worked as a livestock salesman at the St. Joseph Stockyards, retiring after fifty-five years. He was a member of Hope Church of Christ, Cosby Masonic Lodge #600 A.F & A.M., Stockyards Collectors Club, American Quarter Horse Association and Bit and Spur Club. Gene was an all-around cowboy and horseman. He showed and judged horses all of his life. He was a 4-H youth livestock buyer for the American Royal Livestock show and farmed in Cosby, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; son, Clint Salmons; daughter Kim Westhoff and Mike Westhoff; grandsons, Matthew Salmons and David Westhoff; great grandchildren, Tieler Salmons and Bryston Salmons; brothers Ronnie and Donnie Salmons; and niece, Missy McClurg.

J.R. was born July 19, 1938 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Louis and Cathalene (Hamilton) Hirter
J.R. grew up in St. Joseph. He graduated from Central High School in 1956 and also served in the US Marine Corp.
He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Ann Gilley on August 29, 1959. They started their life together in St. Joseph. They had three children, and later moved to Hemple in 1976 and Gower in 1983. They then moved back to St. Joseph in 1996.
J.R. was in the auto body repair business having his own shop, Auto Craft Body & Frame for many years on the Belt Hwy. He was also owner of Hirters Body Shop before that on Garfield Ave. J.R. also worked at Swafford, Polsky Motors and M&G Motors.
J.R. belonged to the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and step mother, Iola Hirter.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly, who was the love of his life for more than 57 years; his dog, Lacy; his children, Vicki Dowell (Kris), Rick Hirter (Diana), Tammy Yantzi (John); grandchildren, Travis, Devin, Tyson, Stacy, Taci, Scott, Amanda, Kensi, Christopher, Abbey, Carlee, Megan, David, Bonnie, and Alexandra; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Brooklyn, Caroline, Hank, Wren, Autumn, and Hadley; sister, Barbara Burnham(Ronnie); brothers, Larry Watson (Carol), Ronnie Watson, Steven Gilley (Sandy), Fred Gilley (Helen Jo), Dennis Gilley (Cole); numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born April 14, 1927 in Bedford, IA, son of Berna and Leslie Ewart. He married Dora Sauter on June 18, 1950 and she survives of the home. He worked at Armour Company retiring after 31 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, hunting and fishing, he was a Christian. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Troy Ewart, and his wife Janet, and Virgil Ewart. Survivors include, wife, Dora Ewart of the home, six children: Alvin Lynn (Gerri) Ewart, Joyce (Mike) Nold, Rodney (Charla) Ewart, Linda Bonea, Les Ewart, and David (Carla) Ewart, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, nephew, Bradley (Suzanne) Ewart.

She is survived by mother, Linda Fanning (William Hicks), St. Joseph, MO, father, Jimmy L (Mary Kathy) Burgess, Springfield, MO, daughter, Dori (Dustin) Waggoner, Saint Joseph, MO, and son, Dalton Mayhew (Mitch Steenbock), Kansas City, MO, 5 grandchildren, Brentin, Ryder, Landon, Nathan, and Zayden, brother, Johnny Burgess (Keri DeWar), St. Joseph, MO, sisters, Lesa (Gary) Droz, Savannah, MO, Lena Walker, St. Joseph, MO, nephew, Jesse Droz, niece, Chloe Walker, dog, Little Bitty, grand dog, Bosten. Lulu Marie Fuhrman
1935-2017

Lula Fuhrman, of rural Hiawatha, surrounded by family, went to be with her Lord, March 14, 2017 at Vintage Park Assisted Living Apartments in Hiawatha. She was 81.
Lulu Marie Kleppe, was born June 19, 1935, near Everest, the oldest of four daughters born to Herman and Margaret Keeney Kleppe and was a lifelong Brown County resident. She graduated from Robinson High School then attended Highland Community College earning a teaching certificate before teaching at Corning, Kansas for two years.
Mrs. Fuhrman was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; and the United Methodist Women of the Church where she had served as President. She served several years as laity to the annual conference for the UMW. At Trinity, she taught Sunday school, and had served on the Church board. She also was a member of the Modern 49’s Extension Unit.
Lulu married George Fuhrman at the United Brethren Church, May 29, 1957. They farmed and raised livestock all of their married life near Hiawatha. He died October 29, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister Sarah Clemmons, and an infant son Gregory.
Survivors include her children: Roger Fuhrman (Kathy) of Aurora, IL, Vickie Walker (Andy) of Belleville, KS, Terry Fuhrman (Jennifer) of Hiawatha, Mary Wendt of Goodland, KS, Linda Young (Brian) of Belleville, 4 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Twila Smith, Marilyn Gibbs (Jim), both of Hiawatha; brother-in-law Bill Clemmons of Topeka; and Buster the cat of rural Hiawatha.
A Celebration of Lulu’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at Trinity United Methodist Church of Hiawatha with Reverend Kevin Rea officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Eddina Kay Nagle 79, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday March 9, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. She was born June 18, 1937 in St. Joseph, Missouri daughter of Allen & Kathryn Lovelady. She attended Lafayette High School, and worked at Big Smith for several years, she was also a homemaker. Eddina loved spending time with her family, playing Santa Clause, dressing up for Apple Blossom Parades, and watching Nascar races, she loved to entertain. Eddina was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Peggy Joann Milbourn, and two brothers, Rodney and Rolland Lovelady. Jo married Ron Wade, June 10, 1956, he survives of the home.
She attended Brooklyn Iowa High School, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. She then attended Missouri University of Columbia.
Jo was a former member of First Christian Church. She was a current member of Ashland United Methodist Church, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and PEO Chapter JF. During her life she was involved with Jr. League, St. Joseph Museum, PTA, and was also past president of Missouri Veterinary Association Axillary.
She enjoyed playing bridge, needle pointing, and quilting
She was also preceded in death by her a brother, G. Curtis Keedy; numerous cousins.

He was a member of The Knuckle Draggers Car Club and loved his hotrods and spending time in his garage.
Sonny enjoyed spending time with his great-grandbabies and doing yard work.
He was also preceded in death by parents; and brother, Curtis Steeby.

William Michael “Mike” Murdy
1948-2017

unnamedWilliam Michael “Mike” Murdy, Sr., of Hiawatha, died shortly after arrival at Hiawatha Community Hospital, Saturday, March 11, 2017. He was 69.
A Celebration of Life service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha. Pastors James Callaway and Ryan VanPeursem will officiate. Military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard. Cremation with follow services, with private family inurnment to be at Laus Creek-Anderson Cemetery, east of Reserve.
The family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.
Mike was born in Denver, CO, February 8, 1948, one of two sons born to William Finley and Audrey Mae Ronan Murdy. He grew up in Denver, attended schools there, and where he spent most of his working life. Mike served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict before discharged in 1967. He worked as a bus mechanic for public transportation in Denver until he was hurt and disabled. Upon moving to Hiawatha, he drove an occasional school bus route but mainly activity routes for USD #415 of Hiawatha. In later years, he worked hard to earn his GED.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hiawatha; and also a member of Homer-White American Legion Post #66, Hiawatha. He loved to fish, eat donuts and drink coffee at McDonald’s with friends. Mike loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He liked to watch sports, especially the Chiefs! Mike was always happy go lucky, always had time to chat, never met a stranger, and loved to aggravate!
He met Shirley Martin in California during the service. They later married May 7, 1967 in Reno, Nevada. They lived in Denver before moving to Hiawatha to make their home in 2003. She survives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Michael Michalski; and one brother, James (Jim) Michalski.

Robert G. “Bob” VanEpps
1927-2017

unnamedHe was born January 11, 1927 in Valley Falls, Ks. He was adopted to Charlie and Delferne VanEpps in 1930 where he resided in the same home his entire life. He went to school in Robinson (where he graduated in 1945). Bob served four years with the 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas Army National Guard, in Hiawatha in the early 1950’s during the time the Unit did sand bagging at Elwood during 1951 flood. He enjoyed riding horses from an early age. He later enjoyed riding motorcycles that he rode as a family activity on Sunday afternoons. Buying, selling, driving and caring for cars was a hobby that he really enjoyed, but farming the family farm was his great passion. Bob and Bruce famed together everyday till he was 85 which he quit due to declining health and was so proud to farm as long as he did.
Bob asked Jesus into his heart and was baptized in 1972 at the Christian Center of Hiawatha. He later joined the First Christian Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir for a short time, and was quite talented with his singing and whistling. He loved the Lord and revered his salvation and need for a savior.
Bob married Ilene Severson and together had three children Linda, Bruce and Ron. He later married Jeanne Judd with two step children, Annette and Brad. Then later if life, he enjoyed driving, buffets at the casinos and visiting with friends with his loving companion Dorothy Collier. She gave a great deal of love, care, and attention to Bob’s final chapter of his life which we were so grateful for.
Survivors include: sons Bruce VanEpps of Hiawatha Ks, Ron VanEpps (and Cindy) of Hays Ks; daughter Linda Proffit of Savannah MO; a total of 7 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his companion Dorothy Collier; step children: Annette (Brian) Hoskins and their son Brady Hoskins of Robinson, Brad (Kathy) Judd of Falls City, NE, and their children.
Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Rev. Micah Dunn, officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home,

She was born September 26, 1942 to Charles and Elaine (Beck) Farrow, they preceded her in death.
Charlaine married James Key October 24, 1964, he preceded her in death January 25, 2016.
She attended Northwest Missouri State University, then later received her teaching degree from Missouri Western State University. Charlaine taught in the St. Joseph School District for over 20 years at Pershing Elementary before retiring in 2004. She had a love for teaching and made a positive impact on many people throughout her life. She was a devoted mother who sacrificed a lot for her daughter’s ice skating career.
After retirement she enjoyed playing cards and looked forward to her monthly luncheons with her Shamrock Sisters of Lafayette and retired teachers.
Survivors include daughter, Amy Wilson (Brady); grandson, Charlie Wilson; sister, Carolyn Mueller (Dan); and brother Lonnie Farrow (Beverly).

Prior to her marriage, Leona was the Private Secretary of the State Statician in Pierre, South Dakota. Later, she was bookkeeper and receptionist for twenty-four years for Dr. James Humphrey in Mound City, Missouri, retiring in 1988. Leona was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where she was also in the altar society.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers Ed, Joe and Lambert Sigaty; and sister Lucille Lesnar.

Helen was a lifetime member of Brookdale Presbyterian Chuch. She was also a member of the Joyce Rae Patterson Kitchen Band and the Rainbow Club. Helen was a dedicated Christian, wonderful mother and loving grandmother.
She graduated from Central High School. Helen worked as a bank teller at US Bank until retiring, and then went to work for the Sheriff’s Department as a receptionist for over twenty years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edwin John Binnicker.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeanette Skaith (John); granddaughters, Elizabeth Skaith and Jenny Larkin; grandson, Eric Vance; great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Jessica Larkin, Brianna Skaith, and Kenya Vance.

Bob was born December 10, 1926 to Ralph and Hazel (Walker) Conger in St. Joseph. He lived most of his life in the St. Joseph area. He worked many years for Westab, from which he retired. He also spent nearly his whole life farming. On April 12, 1949, he married Gloria Waller. Bob enjoyed gardening, and he was always very dedicated to his work.
Preceding him in death are his parents and wife Gloria in 2011and son-in-law, Randy Ralston.
Survivors include his daughters, Judy Brown, of Stewartsville, Linda Ralston, of Dearborn, Tammie (Steve) Russell, of St. Joseph and Debbie (Ed) Harness, of St. Joseph; brother Charles Conger, of Cameron, Mo; eleven grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren’ three great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles “Charley” Ira Ebling Sr. 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. He was born July 10, 1932 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Ora and Daniel Ebling. He served in the Army and is a veteran of the Korean War. He married Leona Pettijohn May 15, 1955, she survives of the home. He worked at Kelsey Nursery as a boy, Barton Feed Store, the St. Joseph Stockyards, he had a truck fleet, and retired from Seitz Meat Packing after 26 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and farming, and was a member of the Souls Harbor Pentecostal Church. Charley was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Thomas, John. Daniel, and Virgil Ebling, two sisters, Melba Miller, and Betty Jean Ebling, granddaughter, Amanda Snethen Arnold, great granddaughter, Alia. Survivors include, wife, Leona A. Ebling of the home, sons, Charles Ebling (Brandy Stringhan), John Daniel Ebling (Autumn Westcott), Walter (Terry) Ebling, daughters, Nancy Mae (Rick) Thompson all of St. Joseph, and Charlene Fay (Rev. She was born in Hiawatha, later living in Powhattan, Topeka, and most recently Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She is survived by children, Marilyn Yantis, Kathy Gates, Linda Carson, Ruben Finger and Julie Little. She was a loving grandmother to twelve grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. She has two brothers and 3 sisters.
Barbara was a Master Gardener and very involved in helping children at her job, in church, 4-H and neighbor children.

Sherry was born December 2, 1959 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Ed and Ann Birch Beadles. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1978. Following in her mother’s footsteps she then attended Northeast Kansas Area Vocational Technical School graduating as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Sherry practiced nursing in the Topeka community for 33 years, she loved caring for the elderly best of all. She really missed her elders and staff at Brewster Place most of all.
She and Kevin A. Greenly were united in marriage on February 2, 1989 in Lansing, Kansas and made their home in Topeka, Kansas.
Sherry was of the Christian faith. In her spare time she enjoyed making jewelry and especially enjoyed fishing. An avid sports fan, Sherry loved “March Madness” and the Chiefs football team.
Survivors include her husband, Kevin A. Greenly, of the couple’s home in Topeka, KS; two sons, Kevin A. Greenly, Jr., Topeka, KS; Trenton Alexander Greenly, Topeka, KS; two daughters, Brandi Nicole (Robert) Bartron, Topeka, KS; Bianca S. Greenly, Topeka, KS; two brothers, Michael Beadles, Topeka, KS; Mark Beadles, Denton, TX; two sisters, Bronna Woods, Kansas City, KS; Linda Crith, Topeka, KS and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She will always be remembered for her kindness to others and love of music.

Audrey Joan Roland
1932-2017

4151976_wlppAudrey Joan Roland, 84, of Hiawatha, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 5, 2017, at her home.
Audrey was born July 28, 1932 in Shawnee County, KS, adopted by W.P. and Phyllis Myers Howery and was a lifelong resident of the Hamlin-Hiawatha area. She grew up near Hamlin where she attended school, graduating from high school with the class of 1950. She was a Tupperware Manager for over 24 years prior to working at Wal-mart as department manager and later in the deli, for over 27 years. When she retired from Wal-mart, she enjoyed making cinnamon rolls when asked, a lot of times at no charge.
Mrs. Roland was a 4 H leader when the kids were small. Audrey was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where she was in charge of the funeral lunches for several years. She later attended the Christian Center and Eternal Hope Worship Center, both in Hiawatha. She also worked in the kitchen for the annual Thanksgiving meal provided to Hiawatha area families. Audrey was a friend to many, enjoyed helping if she thought there was a need.
She married Harry Roland, June 25, 1950, at Hamlin Baptist Church. They farmed northeast of Hamlin until 1969. They continued to live in the Hamlin area until moving to Hiawatha in 1979 where they have resided. He died February 6, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother Jessie; a son Michael; and a grand-daughter Lindsey Jones.
Survivors include her children: Debbie Roland, Bill and Sarah Roland, Joyce and Bill Butrick, Herb and Debbie Roland, Peggy Roland, all of Hiawatha, Phyllis and Lonnie Jones of Morrill; 8 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Audrey’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Tony French and Rich Lehmkuhl will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

He was born February 28, 1935 to Chester and Ida May (Rapp) Lewis.
Donald married Joy Alders on May 30, 1955.
He was a 1953 graduate of Central High School where he participated in football and track. Donald worked at the former Modern Motors Ford Dealership and Beaty Grocery Warehouse. He retired as Senior Master Sergeant after 39 years in the Missouri Air National Guard and worked 31 of those years as a full time Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor. Donald was a veteran of the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. He was President of the St. Joseph Boys Baseball Association for 1 year and coached and managed many youth teams.
He enjoyed fishing, watching high school football, softball and any baseball games. Donald loved to travel with the Air National Guard and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife.
Survivors include sons, Gary Lewis, St. Joseph and Brian Lewis (Gina) Elk River, Minnesota; daughter Ellen Jordan (Philip) St. Joseph; grandchildren Lee (Jessie) and Lynn Jordan, and Levi, Lauren, Emily and Cooper Lewis; brothers Lloyd R. Kenny was born to the late Lloyd and Ella Elizabeth Dutton Tilton, January 22, 1959. Kenny lived his whole life in Doniphan County, KS. He graduated from Highland High School in 1978 prior to graduating from Highland Junior College with a degree in agriculture. He helped farm as he was growing up, and later worked at the local grocery store for more than 18 years.
On July 1, 1989, Kenny married Nancy Marie Terry and moved into Highland. Kenny participated in many community projects, loved airplanes, music, woodworking, making cotton candy, and above all, enjoyed making others laugh. He was a longtime member of United Methodist-Presbyterian Church of Highland.
Survivors include his wife Nancy of the home; (his pride and joy) daughter Ashley Marie Tilton of St. Joseph, MO; his sister Ellen Buser (Bob) of Sabetha, KS, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland, with Pastor Jerry Petering officiating. Private inurnment at a later date at Highland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Wednesday.

Delbert M. Larson
1935-2017

4153207_wlppDelbert M. Larson, 81, of Hiawatha, passed on March 6, 2017, at Hiawatha Community Hospital with family by his side. He was born November 13, 1935, one of three children of Fred and Geneva Webb Larson, at Horton, Kansas. He spent his early childhood on farms near Everest and Hamlin, Kansas. He graduated from Hamlin High School in 1953. He attended several colleges throughout his career, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Emporia State University and his Master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa.
Delbert began his teaching career at Fairview High School, teaching mathematics and science from 1959-1966. He continued his math and science teaching at Hiawatha High School from 1966-1996. He taught part-time at Midway and Doniphan West from 1996-2012. He had a passion for teaching and students, long after his retirement.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; of NEA and KNEA teaching organizations. He had served with the 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas Army National Guard for nearly 10 years.
Delbert was married to Sharon Drozd. Four children were born to this union. They later divorced. He married Patricia Vaughn, August 18, 1973. Two children were born to this union. She survives at the home.
Also surviving are two sons: Gary Larson of Topeka, David Larson of Salina; four daughters: Sherry Jones (Bryan) of Topeka, Angela Thome (Ed) of Murray, Kentucky, Amy Larson of Hiawatha, and Sara Albers (Jeff) of Denton; nine wonderful grandchildren: Jennifer Jones, Joshua (Chelsey) Jones, Allison (Sam) Olker, Melissa Larson, Benjamin Thome, Brendan Larson, Alexander Thome, Emma Albers, and Dylan Albers; four great-grandchildren: Logan, Brooklynn, Isla, and Addison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Della Pyle and Mary Margaret Meyer.
A Celebration of Delbert’s Life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, at First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha, with Pastor Jacob Cloud officiating. Military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard. Cremation will follow services with private family inurnment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Thursday where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 that evening.

She was born January 6, 1928 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Ora and Willis Deel. She graduated from Central High School and worked at Hirsch’s, J.C. Penney’s, and Venture she also worked as a transporter with the Missouri Methodist Medical Center. She was a great cook, who enjoyed sewing and gardening, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and would teach them how to cook. Luella was preceded in death by her parents, son, Dennis Kanacsky, brother, Earl Deel, and sister, Allene Geha. Survivors include, daughters, Joanie Geesing and Lorrie Kanacsky, son, Jon (Sharon) Kanacsky all of St. Joseph, MO, grandchildren: Lisa (Brian) Phipps, Nathan (Andrea) Kanacsky, Ryan Geesing, and Justin (Natalie) Geesing, great grandchildren: Kira, Kayla, and Michael Phipps, Skylar and Jackson Kanacsky, Graham and Charlotte Geesing, Eliana, Lucas and Jacob Geesing.

She graduated from Benton High School 1957, and worked at Whitaker Cable, Armours, retiring from Johnson Controls. She was a member of the Community Christian Church. She loved cooking, her animals, and her country music. Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, George Nutt, her parents, daughter, Cindy Joswick-McClanahan, and two brothers, Charlie Miller, and Dean Miller. Survivors include, Son Shawn Joswick of St. Joseph, step daughters, Linda (Roger) Hanken of St. Joseph, MO, Brenda (Jack) Baines of Atchison, KS, and Laura Nutt of St. Joseph, MO, stepson, James (Annie) Nutt, Jr. of Weston, grandchildren, Shalee, Presley, Cody, and London Joswick, Celena Jones, numerous step grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and former husband Jim Joswick.

She was born July 25, 1925 to Claude and Marie (Hess) Benner.
Jane married Donald McMachen on October 10, 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1981. She later married Walter Myers on March 27, 1982 and preceded her in death in 2002.
Jane was a graduate of Central High School. She worked for 38 years at Montgomery Ward, retiring as the Customer Accommodation Center Manager. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #11 for over fifty years and presided as President of the state organization from 1988 – 1989. Jane also belonged to the Buchanan County Salon #530 and presided as Chapeau in 1972.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-son, Robert Myers; and step-daughter, Sandra Blake.
Survivors include stepsons; Gregory Myers (Becky) and Paul Myers (Tami) of St. Joseph and Larry Branaman (JoAnn) of Arizona; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mike worked as an EMT and security officer for the Andrew County Ambulance & St. Joe Frontier Casino. He enjoyed fishing, the 4th of July, Christmas, the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, he always had a story to tell, but most of all he loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Mark Baker. He is survived by wife, Carol Baker of the home, sons, Travis (Stephanie) Baker of Liberty, MO, Adam (Cassie) Baker of Kansas City, MO, and Chris (Tammy) Oliver of Savannah, MO, daughter, Shelly (Craig) McCoy of Savannah, MO, 10 grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm on Friday with the memorial service starting at 3:00 pm at the Rupp Funeral Home. She married John L. Hartman on November 19, 1949 in Wathena. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1990. She was also preceded by a son, Richard; grandson, Garrett; infant brother, Bernard; brother, Lawrence; sister, Margaret Kaczor; and half sister, Florence Euler.
Frances is survived by her children;

She was active in volunteering of her time playing Bingo at the Wathena Healthcare & Rehab with residents for many years and enjoying going and giving of her time at the Wathena Keen-Age Center.

Barbara was married to Norman Libby who passed away in 1964. She married Charles “C.B.” or “Lefty” Williams in 1966 and he passed away in 1989. She is also preceded in death by her parents and sister, Virginia Lee Seward.
She graduated from Central High School in 1948.
Barbara became a member of Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church in 1953 and was very active in the church. She was so proud of being recognized as a 50 year member in 2003. From 1988-1995 C.B. and Barbara owned and operated Savannah Square Antique Mall.
She was also a member of Joseph Robidoux Chapter of Questers, Mary Ruth Fellowship, president of Triple M Class, past president Guy Harden Class, United Methodist Women serving on the Board of Trustees, St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce and Young Matrons of YWCA.

He married Lois Alexander on March 27, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1999. He married Connie Swaney on March 29, 2002. She survives of the home.
Mr. Goacher served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked as Machinist for HD Lee for thirty years before retiring.
David volunteered for the DAV, drove the bus for many years for the VA and was on the United Way board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lois Goacher; sons, David and Max Goacher; sisters, Jean and Helen; and brothers, Henry and Bill.

Galen “Butchy” Stewart, 62, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully February, 27, 2017 at his home. he was born, August 9, 1954 in St. Joseph, MO. Butchy was an Iron Worker for over 30 years upon retiring, his time was spent with his grandchildren he so adored. He was preceded in death by his parents, Galen and Bernice Stewart, a sister Mary Palmer, a brother Dennis Thomas and a grandson Rico Robinson Hibbler. Survivors include Beth Ball his best friend and companion for years, a son Micheal (Tony) Stewart and Marcy, stepson Charles Carr Hill, stepdaughter Jasmine Byers (Jason), Courtney Carr, sisters; Kim (Brad) Moutray, Barbara Roberts, Charlotte (Albert) Thompson, brothers; Randy (Susan) Stewart, Mark Stewart, annumerous nieces and nephews.

Cindy married Frank Williams on June 17, 1978, spending almost forty years together.
She was a 1977 graduate of Benton High School and a 1982 graduate of Missouri Western State College, where she obtained a degree in Sociology. Cindy worked at Interserve as an in-home health care worker for 24 years and loved each of her clients. She was very involved in Brookdale Presbyterian Church and a prayer warrior. Cindy especially loved being Nana to her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her step-father and mother.

He was born October 22, 1924 in St. Joseph, Missouri, he had resided in St. Joseph for most of his life before moving to El Paso in 1997.
During World War II he served in the United States Army. He served in the pacific Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He had retired from the former Krause Mills in St. Joseph.
On February 1, 1947 he married Peggy Kerns. She preceded him in death on January 12, 2014.
He was a member of Grace Life.TV in El Paso.
Mr. Benton was also preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters.

Lem was born April 16, 1947, in Maryville, MO. He was a 1965 graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. On June 8, 1968 he married Jean Ann Edwards, also of St. Joseph.
He worked as a draftsman for the Missouri State Highway Department prior to his four year enlistment in the United States Air Force. He served in Da Nang, Vietnam from 1969-1970 in the Tiger Flight 366 Security Police Squadron. Lem finished out his service at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He returned to St. Joseph in 1972, and to his career in drafting with the Missouri State Highway Department and then Kimball Engineering.
Lem wanted to resume his career in law enforcement and began working for the St. Joseph Police Department as a patrolman, while also attending Missouri Western State College. He graduated in December of 1979 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice.
In 1980, he accepted the position as a Special Agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad (now Burlington Northern Sante Fe) in Cicero, IL. He lived in Aurora, IL for more than three years before transferring to the Kansas City area. Lem worked in the North Kansas City and Argentine rail yards, as well as on assignments in a 4-state region as a manager in Load & Ride Solutions. He worked for BNSF for 30 years before retiring in 2010.
In retirement, he continued to enjoy traveling, bike riding, spending time with family, going to car shows, and working outside. He loved to attend the grandchldren’s various school programs and sporting events. He loved to laugh, listen to music, read, and tinker with things in the garage. He enjoyed restoring old vehicles and taking on a variety of home projects.
Lem was preceded in death by: his father, Clyde Lemuel Daniels, Sr; his step-father, Marion A. Heckman; his mother, Mary E. Heckman.
Survivors include: wife, Jean Daniels; daughters, Jennifer Anderson (Drew) and Kelly Kurz (Ross); and grandchildren, Taylor, Brady, and Brandon.
The family extends their appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and other staff at Truman Medical Center Lakewood for their compassion and excellence in care during his time there.

He was born March 10, 1974 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Thomas Kinard and Jolene Edwards.
Paul graduated from Central High School in 1992. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially riding ATV’s, shooting and was an Elvis fanatic. He was a loving father and his family was very important to him. Paul was a friend to everyone.
Survivors include his parents; son, Colt Kinard; fiance’, Michelle Woodring and her son Owen Crosby; sister, Brandi Gilgour (Lee); nephews, Greyson and Gannon; and his extended family and friends. Nancy Jeanne (Winder) Fredrickson

unnamedNancy Jeanne (Winder) Fredrickson passed away on February 22, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born June 14, 1940 to Nadine and Willard Winder. She graduated from Benton High School in 1958. She married Jack Fredrickson on May 2, 1959 and spent the past 57 years by his side. She was employed at Drovers Merchants Bank, Manager of Stock Yards Insurance Co. and retired from JADO’s Accounting & Income Tax. She was the “unofficial” scorekeeper for more basketball games than could be counted. She enjoyed reading, never met a penny-slot she didn’t like, especially loved to play games with her children and grandchildren, and will always be remembered as having an abundance of patience and kindness. Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Jack; son Steve and wife Tiffany; daughters Tracy Kerner and husband Joe, Angie Giegerich and husband Phil; brothers Jim and wife Connie Winder and Gary Winder. She was a wonderful grandmother to Ryan and Kyle Kerner, Tyler and Zack Fredrickson, Kade and Kellen Giegerich. The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Friday, with a memorial celebration of life to start at 6:00 PM Friday, at Rupp Chapel. Ms. Fredrickson has been cremated under the care of the Rupp Funeral Home.

She was born September 22, 1921 in Evans City, PA.
Agnes graduated from Penn State with a Masters in Art Education. She taught at the Kittanning, PA School District. Agnes moved to St. Joseph in 1967 and continued to work as an artist and teacher.
She was a member of the Runcie Club, International Porcelain Art Teachers and an active member of the Lover’s Lane Porcelain Painter’s Club for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Clara (Miller) Kennedy; husband, John L. Tiley; children, Warren C and Sharon K. Tiley; brother, Howard A. Kennedy.
Survivors include her close friend and artist protégée, Carrie Dreier; and long-time caregivers, Trisha England and Tearany Hendrixs.

Glenda B. Larrison
1936-2017

unnamedGlenda B. Larrison, 80, of Topeka, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
She was born February 28, 1936 in Horton, the daughter of James and Madeline Kling Wolfe. She graduated from Netawaka High School in 1954.
Glenda was a member of the Soldier Christian Church.
She married Harold E. Larrison June 6, 1954 at the First Christian Church in Holton. He preceded her in death on July 23, 2014.
Glenda was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Kevin Larrison, a daughter, Penny Hannon Larrison, and two brothers, James “Jimmy” Wolfe and Wendell Wolfe.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Swindale and husband Darryl, Topeka, Kim Liddle and husband Steve, Little Elm, TX; four grandchildren, Carrie Doud (Chip), Barry Swindale, Justin Hannon (Becky) and Kira Varelman; and three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Maleia Doud, and Braden Swindale.
A Celebration of Glenda’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 25th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, with visitation from 10:00 until service time. Burial will follow in the Holton Cemetery. Glenda will lie in state until service time at the funeral home. Edward B. Gilpin
1921-2017

unnamedWathena, Kansas – Edward B. Gilpin, 96, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the Wathena Health Care Center.
Ed was born on February 4, 1921 in Saxton, Missouri to parents, Charles S.Gilpin and Beatrice (Lower) Gilpin. Ed was from a family of 15 children and lived on a farm. He graduated from Pickett High School, St. Joseph, Missouri and married the love of his life, Dorothy (Stigers) Gilpin in 1940. They moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Ed attended an Aeronautical School and worked at the Glen Martin Airport.
In 1943 Ed was drafted into the U.S. Navy during WWII, and set sail on the USS Saidor at which time he moved his family back to St. Joseph, Missouri to live with Dorothy’s parents. He was discharged in 1945 to return to his family and moved back to Baltimore.
In 1948 Ed and (wife) Dorothy purchased the Wathena Chicken Hatchery and moved their family of six children to live in Wathena. He was in the hatchery business from 1948-1961, Wathena City Marshall and retired from Swafford Realty Company, where he worked with his nephew, Mark Gilpin.
Ed was a member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 161 in Wathena, Kansas. He was a member of the Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he was Past Commander of Legion of Honor. Ed never knew a stranger.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, his parents, grandson, Todd Gilpin and a great-granddaughter, Malorie Adkins.
Ed is survived by his son, Donald Gilpin of Corona, California;
Daughters, Margie Twidwell of Topeka, Kansas;
Carol Moddelmog of Fort Collins, Colorado;
Edna Cherry of Albany, Missouri;

Kenneth R. Jameson

He was born August 29, 1923 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Don and Ethel (Ray) Jameson.
Kenneth married Marjorie Calvert on February 28, 1946.
He attended school in St. Joseph and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served behind the lines as a telegraph operator during World War II. Kenneth worked at Hillyard for 27 years retiring in 1987 as traffic manager.
He was a member of the Charity Zaredatha Lodge No. 189, A.F. & A.M.; Hugh De Payens Commandery, No. 4, Knights Templar; Mitchell Chapter, No. 14, Royal Arch Masons; St. Joseph Council, No. 9, Royal and Select Masters; Moila Shrine. Kenneth was also an original member of the Fairway Golf Course and Brookdale Presbyterian Church.
Kenneth greeted people with a hug and a smile and didn’t know a stranger. He was always up for an adventure but liked to have it planned out first. He also liked poetry.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and brother, Carlos Jameson.
Survivors include Clark Tally and family whom Kenneth thought of as his own; and a great group of golf and card playing buddies at Fairway Golf Course.

Margaret married Jacob Kulowski May 8, 1948, he preceded her in death December 22, 1982.
She was a secretary at West Tab and also worked as a nurse for Dr. Saferstein, Dr. Shore, Dr. Kearby, Dr. Minton and Dr. Kulowski.
Margaret was a member of Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, Francis Street First United Methodist Church, Ambassadors, Runcie Club, Moila Sewing Club, Moila Golf Club and Temple Adath Joseph Sisterhood.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Judith “Ski” Craven.
Survivors include daughter, Cheryl Hendricks; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Hendricks, Patrick Hendricks, Nicole Fruits, Brett Craven, Dr. Scott Craven, Michelle Rohlf; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter.

Richard “Junior” Perez
1952-2017

Richard “Junior” Perez, 64, of Onaga, died Thursday, February 23, 2017 at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka.
He was born December 20, 1952 in Topeka, the son of Paul and Marcella Munoz Perez. He graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, KS in 1971.
Richard worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for thirty-two years. He retired in 2002 due to his health.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Duluth.
He married Barbara A. Creevan on January 29, 1977 at Duluth. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Christopher Perez, Onaga; a daughter, Joanna Etienne, Wamego; two brothers, Michael Perez, Westmoreland, and Jack Perez, Duluth; three sisters, Barbara Alcala and Sandra Leroux, both of Kansas City, KS, and Karen Carnolli, Pawnee City, Nebraska; and four grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 3rd at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery. A register book will be available to sign at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Memorials will be used to help with expenses, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Janice was preceded in death by husband, Keith Hamilton, her parents, son, Rodney Griggs, brother, Reggie DeLong, two sisters, Connie R. Delong and Margaret Stanford. Survivors include: daughters, Sherry Henderson of St. Joseph, MO and Lesa (Todd) Myer of Kansas City, MO, son, Lyle (Tracy) Lindley of St. Joseph, MO, brothers, Billy Delong of St. Joseph, MO and Jimmy Delong of Stockton, CA, four grandchildren: Jamie (Rickie) Hass, Todd (Micah) Myer Jr., Mark (Katie) Henderson, and Brandi (Jared) Hurley, and seven great grandchildren.

She enjoyed Bingo and her dogs (Molly & Miley) and spending time with her family, friends, and sister. Erma was preceded in death husband Loren Webster, her parents, 5 children, brother, John W Brown, and a sister, Elizabeth Eaker. Survivors include, daughter, Robin Riddle-Farrell, sons, Jay Riddle, Thomas Riddle, and Rodney Riddle, 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren: and a sister, Dorothy Smith of Lake of the Ozarks, MO. He was born August 22, 1961 in Muncie, Indiana.
Paul married Saundra Stewart on December 26, 2002.
Mr. Church retired from the Muncie Police Department. Law and politics were very important to him.
He was a member of the Temperance Lodge #438 AF&AM in Smithville, Missouri and the Legendary McGuire University FOP in Muncie, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Erling Church; brother, James Church; and grandparents, Fred and Sarah Schweder and Noah and Eva Church.
Survivors include his mother, Madalyne May (Schweder) Church; wife, Saundra Church, Liberty, Missouri; daughters, Precious Church and Anna Church (Chris); grandchildren, Jasslyn and Cherokee Church; brothers, Daniel (Debra) and Michael (Denise) Church; and numerous nieces and nephews.
