Anita Marie Breit

front and obit (3)Anita Marie Breit, 72, of Savannah, MO, passed away at her home Tuesday, September 6, 2016. She was born in Leavenworth, KS on December 11, 1943, to Albert & Ester (Heitzman) Wacker. She married Thomas Breit in Oregon, MO on August 17, 1984 and he survives of the home.
Anita loved her family, the Kansas City Chiefs, vacations, and Christmas. If it was Chiefs game day she was up and at the stadium for the tailgating as soon as the gates opened. She enjoyed Table Rock Lake and the many boating trips.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Breit of the home; one daughter, Helen Jones (Geoff Smith) of Maryville, MO; three grandchildren, Haily (Josh) Randall, Hanna (Caleb) Strough, and Austin Jones. She had four great-grandchildren, Skyler Randall, Ethan Randall, Brooklyn Randall, and Taylor Strough. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00AM at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah, MO. Visitation and family receiving hours will be 6:00-8:00pm on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah. She was born July 29, 1940 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Mary (Aholtz) and Howard Harrison. She graduated from Lafayette high school 1958. She worked at Crouch Brothers Trucking, and was an Avon lady in the early 70’s and a homemaker. She enjoyed cake decorating, and was a member of the Bible Baptist Temple. Sharon was preceded in death by husband, Norman King, her parents, son, Kent King, two brothers, Howard Harrison, Jr., and Charles Harrison, Sr., and a sister, Mary J. Gray. Survivors include, two sons, Norman “Neal” King of Gladstone, MO, and Kevin King of Tampa, FL. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Bible Baptist Temple, with Pastor Quentin Vaughn officiating, The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. She was born December 31, 1946 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Ruth and John Allen. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1964 and Missouri Western State University, with a BSN in Nursing. She worked at Department of Corrections as a nurse and the State of Missouri as a nursing home inspector. She was a Campaigner for the Handicap Community and was active with Special Olympics and United Cerebral Palsy. April was a member of the Grace Evangelical Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dale Eiman, son Michael Eiman, step son, Jeff Eiman, two sisters, Barbara Allen, and Polly Smedley. Survivors include, son, Brandon (Mindy) Eiman of Saint Joseph, MO, granddaughters, Lauren & Taylor Eiman, step sons, Richard (Patti) Eiman of St. Joseph, MO, Scott (Barbie) Eiman of Chanhassen, MN, step daughter, Lana Kay (Craig) Reynolds of St. Joseph, MO, and numerous step grandchildren, and two cousins, Shey Jewell of Las Vegas, NV, and Paige Stewart of Kidder, MO.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home, with cremation to follow. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials are requested to the Special Olympics.

Traster, Simon obit photoAirman First Class Simon Gregory Traster, 20 of Great Falls, Montana formerly of Spring, Texas and Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away on Sunday September 4, 2016 when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving on a country road just north of Great Falls, Montana.
Simon was born the son of Mellissa Rene Cordell of Spring, Texas and Brandon Kip Traster of Saint Joseph, Missouri on January 30, 1996. Born a child of God Simons life was full of Love, Laughter, and many friends. While on this earth our Heavenly Father blessed Simon with the natural ability to enlighten and touch the hearts everyone he came in contact with. As a child, Simon attended Elementary School in Louisburg, Kansas Middle School and part of his High School in Saint Joseph, Missouri and graduated High School in 2014 from Klein High School in Spring, Texas.
After High School Simon briefly attended Lone Star Community College and worked at the Cypress, Texas YMCA as a Life Guard where he enjoyed coaching and teaching children how to swim. Guided by the backbone of his life, Marie Kathryn Nicknish, Simon made the decision to enlist in the Montana Air National Guard. While in the Montana Air National Guard “Traveling Simon” as he was affectionately known, obtained the distinguished title of C-130 Crew Chief. His Commanding Officer remembered Simon as a great source of energy for the area and will be solely missed.

Simon is preceded in death by his Grandfather Craig Henry Olhausen, Grandfather Richard Lee Cordell, and His Grandmother Patricia Diane Rose. Some of whom he has never met but we have comfort in knowing that our Lord Jesus Christ has reunited them in the heavens above.

He was born April 8, 1939 to John and Viola (Guyot) Nickols in St. Joseph, Missouri.
He served in the Missouri Air Guard as an Airman 2nd Class from 1957 to 1963.
Raymond married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Malson, on August 1, 1959. They were married for over 50 years.
He retired from Mead Paper Products after 40 years as a Lead Adjuster.
He had a great passion for hunting and fishing with his family and friends and also was a member of the St. Joe Rifle and Pistol Club.
Mr. Nickols was a lifelong member of Brookdale Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Nickols; and parents.
Survivors include his children, William and Wendy Nickols (Gary Elder) of St. Joseph and Richard Nickols (Brenda) of Overland Park, Kansas; six grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and brother, Robert Nickols (Liz).

Gladden cropBarbara Jean Gladden 78, St. Joseph, MO passed away, Monday, September 5, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. She was born November 14, 1937 in St. Joseph, MO to Charles & Ethel (Hamilton) Gill. She married Gordon Gladden on Nov. 8. 1968 and he preceded her in death on June 1, 2002.
Barbara loved her family as they loved her. Barbara was a member of the St. Patrick Parish of St. Joseph. She enjoyed playing and coaching softball for many years. She never knew a stranger and she travelled extensively.
She is survived by three children, Randy Silvey, J.D. (Ruth) Carrel, and Jodie (Guy) Rocha all of St. Joseph; two sisters; Bonnie Jones and Delores Skeen both of St. Joseph; five grandchildren, Carrel Thompson, Tyler Carrel, Tearany Hendrix, A.J. Carrel, Austen Rocha, and eleven great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Thursday, September 8, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Joseph, MO. with Father Richard Rocha, main celebrant. Mary Carolyn Hays, 98, born in June 1918 in Monroe City, MO to Perry T. Hays and Maude (Sullivan) Hays died peacefully on September 5, 2016 in Living Community. She lived most of her life in St. Joseph, having moved here from Hannibal, MO in 1934.
She was a longtime member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph. A 60-year member of the adult choir, a Eucharistic minister and active in church work, she belonged to St. Ann’s Altar Society, was a past president of the Ladies of Charity and an hour captain and volunteer at the Mir House of Prayer since the opening of its perpetual adoration chapel. She also enjoyed volunteering and being a Eucharistic minister at Living Community when it opened.
Mary Carolyn graduated from the former Convent of the Sacred Heart, was a member of the Associated Alumnae of the Sacred Heart and a member of the Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society. She always enjoyed gathering with her convent classmates, the “Golden Girls.”
She retired from New York Life Insurance Company in 1983 after 44 years of service.
Her primary interests since retiring were researching her family history back several generations and providing love and compassion to her friends and associates in need. She was deeply devoted to her faith and religion throughout her life. Her family, although small, was very important to her. She also loved to travel the US as well as to many countries with her good friends and always shared detailed accounts of the trips with family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her only brother, William Andy Hays, his wife, LaVonne “Bonnie” Temple Hays of Englewood, CO and her half-sister, Jessie Hays Ragland of Springfield, IL. She is survived by cousins, two nephews, half-nieces, half-nephew, great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.
Her family wishes to thank her caring angels, Donna Smith and Barb Heerlein for their many years of loving care and support for Mary Carolyn and her special friends, the late Doris Kessburger and Walt Ashler. They also thank all her friends and staff at Living Community that made her time there so special.

He married Martha Fry on August 10, 1959 she preceded him in death. He served in the Army and is a veteran of the World War II serving in the pacific theatre. He worked at Swift and company, Carnation Pet Foods, and National Grocery. He was an avid turkey and pheasant hunter, loved raising labrador retrievers, and gardening. Ray was a member of Masonic Hi Twelve Club # 49, Moila Shrine, and other Masonic organizations and McCarthy Baptist Church Baptist. Ray was preceded in death by wife, Martha A. Jones, his parents, Twin sister, Faye R. Campbell, and sisters, Retha Jones, and Naomi Jones. Survivors include, cousin, Pete Jones, great niece, Tracy Shifflett, and caretaker and neighbor, Jenny Redman of St. Joseph, MO.

Jarry Thomas, age 65, passed away Wednesday, August 31st, 2016 at his home in Rushville, MO. Jarry was born September 20, 1950 in St. Joseph, MO.
He graduated from DeKalb High School, class of 1968, and received a Bachelor’s in Education from Missouri Western State University.
Jarry married Denise Dailey Thomas on November 12, 1988.
He was one of seven children; preceded in death by his parents Tom and Jeannette Thomas. Jarry was a fifth generation farmer and rancher, volleyball and basketball official with the GKCOA (Greater Kansas City Officials Association) and PEBO (Pony Express Basketball Officials) for over 25 years and President of the Rushville Water District. He was an Elder and member of the Rushville Christian Church. Some of his passions included travel, community theatre, sports and correcting your grammar.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf. Mr. Marshall was a member and past Master of the Charity Zaredatha Lodge No. 189, A.F. & A.M., 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and the Moila Shrine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Geneva (Nelson) Marshall; brother, Aubrey “Suds” Marshall; sister, Norma Chase; and grandson, Bradley Marshall.

Raelynne married Brett Dunn on August 7, 1993.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roger Del Malone.

Frances “Nan” Jean Hatfield, 90, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016 in an Overland Park, KS health care center. She was born February 28, 1926 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Alma and Charles Scanlan. She worked at the Hotel Robidoux, Satin Doll, and was the owner operator of Galloway’s Bar. She enjoyed volunteer work at the Food Kitchen, Interserv, Calvin Center, and the North West Missouri Geneology Society. She was a member of the Catholic faith. Frances was preceded in death by husband, Newton Hatfield, her parents, two brothers, John and Don Scanlan, four sisters, Sally Smart, Mary Wineinger, Virginia Wills, and Charlotte Patterson. Survivors include, two daughters, Marsha (John) Farrell of St. Joseph, MO, and Susie Brown of De Kalb, MO, grandson, Brian Christgen, and seven other grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and one brother, Carroll “Buz” Scanlan of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Kathleen married Ricky Joe Hoffman on March 31, 1972. She worked for the St. Joseph School District for over 20 years in food service.

Gerald F. “Jerry” Lund, 82, Atchison, Kansas, died Monday, August 29, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Memorial services will be Friday, September 2, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Episcopal Church with Fr. Jon Hullinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Episcopal Gardens. Jerry was born on January 4, 1934 in Horton, Kansas the son of Frank H. and Jane (Lockwood) Lund. He attended the Effingham schools and Highland Community College.
He and the former Helen V. Parrett were united in marriage on November 19, 1954 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison, KS.
He began his employment at the United States Postal Department and later for nine years worked at Swift & Co. in St. Joseph, MO. He then became employed at St. John’s Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas for twenty-three years as the Director of Materials Management until his retirement. After retirement he worked part time as a clerk at the Hardware Store in Atchison. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1957.
He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, yard work, and working with his electric trains. Jerry was experienced in the field of woodworking, having used his talents to construct his personal residence.
Survivors include his wife of over sixty years, Helen V. Lund of the couple’s home in Atchison, two sons, Alan (Sara) Lund, Cummings, KS, Kevin (Jill) Lund, Atchison, KS, a daughter Lori (Bob) Myers, Atchison, KS, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Shirley Scott, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 25, 2016 after 90 years of a loving life.
She was born July 1, 1926 in Marysville, Kansas and lived most of her life in St. Joseph. Shirley married Gregory Scott on June 12, 1947, a romance interrupted and also fueled by Scottie’s service in the Pacific. Her pride for her Marine didn’t fade for their 69 years of marriage. Shirley was a graduate of Lafayette High School and a member of Brookdale Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her parents, Spencer and Nellie (DeVorss) Greenwell; brother, Herbert Greenwell; and sister, Barbara Jahne.
Survivors include husband Scottie; sons, Bradley Scott, St. Joseph, and Bruce Scott, Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Lanette Bocquin (Kevin), St. Joseph; six grandchildren, Amy Scott, Jessica Blanton (Jimmy), Benjamin Scott, Greg Scott, Whitney Hunt (Whitney) and Caitlin Parker (Matthew); five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Gary Jahne; and nine nieces and nephews.
Shirley was “YooHoo” to her grand and great-grandchildren because of her lyrical sweet greeting, and every one of her “little lambs” carry a piece of her in the way they live, with one of her sayings in their hearts. She was our teacher of loving kindness and she never quit learning and refining it herself. Doing good for others with genuine compassion was the way she lived, so there are hundreds of people who were touched by her notes, small gifts, pats on the hand, and soothing eyes.
Nine decades of Shirley’s life was a generous gift from God to us and gratitude soothes the pain of this gap we face.

William J. “Bill” Hurley
1926-2016

William J. “Bill” Hurley, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 25, 2016 at a local healthcare facility.
He was born March 18, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Stephen and Ann Thompson Hurley.
In 1949 Bill married Delores (Dee) Stevens and raised three children, Tom, Joan and Susan. He later married Pamela Thrasher on April 22, 1988.
Bill proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII and Korea. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1943 and attended the University of Minnesota. It was through promotions in his career in the packaging industry that he moved his family from Minnesota to South Dakota and Iowa before moving to St. Joseph. In 1973 he was promoted to General Manager of Hoerner Waldorf and opened the manufacturing facility in St. Joseph. Bill remained General Manager when the plant was acquired by Champion International and later by Stone Container.
Bill’s life was driven by volunteer work, civic promotion and community involvement. He was a former member of Commerce Bank of St. Joseph Board of Directors, St. Joseph Area Crime Stoppers Board, past president of St. Joseph Booster Club, Missouri Western State University Foundation Board, President of Missouri Western State University Board of Governors, Heartland Health Foundation Board of Trustees, vice-chairman of Missouri State Chamber of Commerce Board, past president of St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce, St. Joseph YMCA Board of Directors and chairman of Physical Educational committee, member and former chairman of St. Joseph United Way Campaign, Salvation Army Board of Directors, president of Junior Achievement of St. Joseph, chairman of Mayor’s Revenue Task Force, Industrial Development Authority of St. Joseph, Trails West Finance Committee, St. Joseph Cotillion Board, Benton Club and is a current member of the St. Joseph Country Club. One of Bill’s proudest moments was carrying the Olympic torch in 1996 as it passed through St. Joseph.
Bill enjoyed golf and was an avid runner. He especially enjoyed running the St. Joseph Parkway, competition runs and triathlons with his best friend Linden Black.
Bill was a Catholic and was active in starting Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Per Bill’s request, Dr. Jimmy Albright will conduct the funeral services.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary (Doug) Slye; and mother of his children, Delores (Dee) Hurley.
Survivors include beloved wife of 28 years, Pam Hurley; son, Tom (Karen) Hurley of Lubbock, Texas; daughters, Joan (John) Debrei of Colleyville, Texas and Susan Esson of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; step-daughter, Missy (Ryan) McClurg of St. Joseph, Missouri; grandchildren, Angie (Brant) McMeans, Shaun (Kristie) Hurley, Lauren Debrei, Katie Debrei, Gabby Debrei, Nick Debrei, Matthew Debrei; step-grandchildren, Rylan McClurg and Maggie McClurg; great-grandchild, Carson Hurley; his sister, Jane Hurley, CSJ of St. Paul, Minnesota and nephew, Ray (Patricia) Slye of California.

Grace was born on February 20, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Vincent and Leona (Stallbaumer) Nolte. She attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Nortonville, Kansas, Nortonville High School and graduated from Mt. Saint Scholastica Academy in Atchison.
She married James C. Brentano on November 23, 1968 at St. Joseph’s Church in Atchison. Jim preceded her in death on April 19, 2016.
Grace began her employment as a secretary at Mt. Saint Scholastica Academy. She has been the office manager at the former Phalen’s Chevrolet, now Lewis Chevrolet & Buick for over 40 years. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers and decorating for the holidays for other people. She was a selfless person, always putting others before herself. You could always find Grace and her husband Jim enjoying each other’s company on their front porch.
She was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish in Atchison.

Rita was born August 6, 1937 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Joseph and Rose Severin Prohaska. She attended Doniphan Grade School, graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy and then graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1955.
She went to work as a Registered Nurse at the Atchison Hospital where she worked for over forty years until her retirement.
She and Max H. Mosher were married February 27, 1960 at St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison. Mr. Mosher preceded her in death on March 24, 2010.
Rita was a member of St. Benedict Parish.

She was born July 4, 1960 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Gerald and Vesta (Guyer) Barmann.
She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1978.
Tina loved going to garage sales with her mother and sisters, all animals, crafts and artwork, but her special love was spending time with her family and friends.
Tina was also a strong woman of Faith and will always be remembered for her love of God. Through all of the challenges that she faced, she always kept her kind nature.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Esther L. Mueller

3872197_wlppEsther L. Mueller, 100, of Hiawatha, passed away surrounded by her family, Saturday, August 27, 2016, at Vintage Park Assisted Living Apartments in Hiawatha.
Esther was born at the family home near Reserve, December 21, 1915, the daughter of Ralph Sr. and Jennie Frye Hillyer and had lived in Brown County her entire life. She grew up near Reserve, attended Hart District #33 country school prior to graduating valedictorian at Reserve High school, class of 1935. Esther then enrolled in nurses training at Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, MO, for nine months.
Mrs. Mueller was a longtime member of Reserve United Methodist Church before transferring her membership to First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha. Esther was kept very busy being a farm wife and mother; along with being pianist for Church, school, and community events. She loved playing the piano by ear or by note. If that wasn’t enough, she was a member of the LaGrange Club; Alta Vista Club; WSCS, which is now UMW (United Methodist Women) of the Church.
She married Edward H. Mueller, March 6, 1938. They farmed and raised livestock north of Hiawatha for many years until they retired and moved to Hiawatha in 1994. He died May 22, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother Marie Hillyer; and a brother Ralph HIllyer, Jr.
Survivors include two sons: Marvin (MaryAnn) Mueller; Jim (Christie) Mueller, both of rural Hiawatha; step- sister Doris (Clarence) Yoesel of rural Falls City, NE; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Esther’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Pastor Jacob Cloud officiating, assisted by Shane Spangler. Interment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Wednesday, where the family will meet that evening from 6 until 7:30.

Ruth Ann Kneisel
1941-2016

unnamed (83)Robinson, KS Ruth Ann Kneisel, 75 of Robinson, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Monday afternoon August 22, 2016 at Maple Heights Care Center where she had been a short term resident.
Ruth was born in Robinson Kansas July 19, 1941, one of four children born to Roy M. and Luverne Glenn. Ruth was raised on the family farm, attended elementary school in a single room schoolhouse near the family home and graduated from Robinson High School in 1959.
She married Thomas E. Rolfe in August of 1959 in Robinson. They resided in Robinson, Mayetta, Topeka and settled on a small farm outside of Hoyt. There they raised two children, were active in the surrounding community, enjoyed the company of friends and neighbors and the labors of life on the farm. They separated and divorced in 1975. Ruth later remarried to the late Richard Kneisel in 1983, divorcing in 1991 and spent many of her remaining years with friend and companion Carroll Huss.
Ruth worked at Garment Factory in Holton and Chiropractic Office in Topeka prior to returning to Robinson to be closer to her family. She worked as a production foreman at Flair-Fold Industries in Hiawatha, and later accepted a position with the Kansas Department of Transportation where she worked as a Motor Carrier Inspector until her retirement in 1983.
Although small in stature she was known for her large personality, exclaiming that her height stood at 5 foot and ½ inch. Ruth was a “spitfire” quickly letting others know how she felt about matters, but also possessed a kind and caring nature that led her to assist and care for others that were in need and less fortunate.
She found happiness in attending a variety of country music shows with her sister Madeline and various shopping outings with her daughter, sisters and numerous nieces. She enjoyed the simple pleasure of spending time with her sisters, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a fabulous cook and took silent pride in preparing, packaging and sending homemade treats to our troops overseas for over twenty years.
Survivors include her children: Melanie Mears and husband Dennis, Anthony Rolfe and wife Andi of Robinson, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and friend Carroll Huss. Also surviving is a sister Reta Taylor and husband David, also of Robinson. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Madeline and Katherine.
A Celebration of Ruth’s life is planned for 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 26 at the Robinson United Methodist Church. Pastor Paul Waters will officiate; interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson, KS.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Thursday. Family and friends are encouraged to attend a remembrance of life that will be held August 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.

Michael F. “Mike” Anderson

Funeral services will be Friday, August 26, 2016 at 10:30 AM in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, Aug. 25, from 6-7:30 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Andrew J. Mike was born on November 30, 1960 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Joseph and Mildred (Thompson) Anderson. He graduated from Midway High School, Denton, Kansas.
He and the former Lela “Itsy” Gwartney were united in marriage on September 18, 1993 at the Rushville Christian Church.
Mike was a utility operator at Midwest Grain Products in Atchison for sixteen years. He enjoyed golfing and being on the family farm. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and his nieces and nephews. He was a North Carolina Tar Heels basketball fan; he previously coached basketball at ACES for three years. In his spare time he did carpentry and roofing work.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lela “Itsy” Anderson, of the couple’s home in Atchison, a son, John Carl Anderson, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Rachel Dexter, Horton, KS, three brothers, Joe R. (Jovita) Anderson, Atchison, KS, Jerry (Charlotte) Anderson, Troy, KS, Jeff (Andy) Anderson, Atchison, KS, a sister, Lisa (Tim) Smith, Wathena, KS, and five grandchildren, Ryleigh, Emily, Kloe, Adyson, and Zoey.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was born March 30, 1927 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Don lived a simple life and worked on the family dairy farm. After retiring, he lived at Vintage Gardens and later at Living Community. He was a previous member of Zion United Church of Christ and later attended Hope United Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Bertha (Stoos) Eiman; sister, Arlene Kemp; and brother, Louis Eiman, Jr.
Survivors include brother, Bill Eiman (Dorothy), Fort Collins, Colorado; sister-in-law, Suzanne Eiman, St. Joseph, Missouri; nephew, Steve Eiman (Barb); nieces, Susan Stroh (Tim) and Brenda Wickstrom (Todd); and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and extended family and friends from Vintage Gardens.

He was born November 18, 1954 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
J.B. married Patricia “Patti” Bachman on January 25, 1975.
He was a graduate of Lafayette High School Class of 1973 then graduated from Missouri Western State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and minoring in Accounting. J.B. worked at Mead Products for 30 years and later worked for the State of Missouri until his passing.
He was a member of the Stanford Who’s Who and his family was most important to him. J.B. enjoyed reading after graduating college, gardening, woodworking and the outdoors. He loved attending his grandkids’ activities and was honored to play TAPS with his son Jamie at the local cemeteries during the Memorial Day holiday.
J.B. had a very unique sense of humor and as he would say, Mmmmmm bye…until we meet again.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Nellie (Wood) Stoneburner; and sister, Mary Kay Wood.

Helen was born February 23, 1940 in Valentine, Nebraska the daughter of Howard T. and Mary L. Thomas Collins. She attended District #18 school in Leavenworth, Kansas. She attended and graduated from Callahans School of Hair Dressing in 1965.
Helen and Edwin Edgar were united in marriage on September 30, 1976 at the Atchison County Courthouse in Atchison. Mr. Edgar preceded her in death on June 12, 2008.
Helen was employed as a cosmetologist for many years. She also was employed at Atchison Senior Village Nursing Home for twenty years until her retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Shannon N. (Anthony) McCurrie, Atchison, KS; Brenda Page, Colorado; a son, Roger (Gabby) Page Atchison, KS; a brother Patrick Collins, Leavenworth, KS; a sister, Billie Sue Collins-Gauger, Leavenworth, KS; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Lieberman in 2011; a brother, Bobby Collins in 1990 and a sister Arlene Smith in 2002.

3862741Barbara Kendall died peacefully August 18, 2016 at a Wathena, Kansas healthcare facility following a brief illness.
She was born to Joe and Zola (Moser) Scott August 29, 1935 in Troy, Kansas.
A farm girl all her childhood, it wasn’t until her family moved to Elwood, Kansas in the mid-1950’s that she would meet her future husband.
Odis Kendall was introduced to Barbara by his cousin, Jean Liechti. Barbara and Jean were friends and 1955 graduates of Elwood High School. After a year of courtship Odie and Barb were married May 4, 1956 at the First Baptist Church of Elwood.
Aside from a brief six years, Barbara lived her whole life in various parts of Doniphan County, Kansas. 30 years were spent in Elwood. During that time she was the local Avon Lady and faithfully served her customers for two decades.
Barbara enjoyed many arts and crafts but was most enthusiastic with her quilting. She participated for many years in a quilting circle at Evolution United Methodist Church.
She cherished the times spent with her beloved grandchildren, great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. During the holidays her home was always open to family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Odis; two brothers Jerry and Alva.
She is survived by 3 sons: Thomas (Joan), St. Joseph, Missouri; Silas (Cynthia), Platte City, Missouri; Edward (Lisa), St. Joseph; 1 daughter: Sharon, Lecompton, Kansas.; 5 grandchildren: Sara (Joshua); Rachel; Selina; Derek; Bailey and 1 great-granddaughter: Eloise. 2 sisters: Katherine Givens, St. Joseph; Beverly Richardson, Elwood; 1 brother: Paul (Linda), Wathena

Ralph was a former member of the Fox Hunters Association at Fillmore, Missouri and a past member of the Fillmore School Board. He enjoyed hunting, swap meets, playing pitch and square dancing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Sr. and Mabel (Atkins) Lance; and three sisters, Bonnie Sisk, Avis Shunk and Roberta “Bertie” Elifrits.
Survivors include four daughters, Debbie Kammerer, Derri Wandfluh, both of St. Joseph, Missouri, Donna Streeby and Dana Lance, both of Fillmore, Missouri; three sons, Randy Lance, Ted Lance and his wife Sylvia, and Bob Lance and his wife Bonnie, all of Fillmore, Missouri; twenty grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence J. “Larry” Creevan, 65, of Wamego, died Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Crestview Nursing Home in Seneca.
He was born September 14, 1950 at Fairbury, Nebraska, the son of Lawrence W. and Jo Ann Nider Creevan. He graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Providence during the Vietnam War.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, a son, Lawrence Joseph Lavern Creevan, and a brother, James Patrick Creevan.
Survivors include his mother, Jo Ann Creevan, Onaga; three sons, Anthony Moore, Pawnee City, NE, Brian Creevan and Matthew Creevan; two sisters, Barbara Perez and husband Richard, Onaga and Jacqueline “Jaci” Morris and husband Robert, Circleville; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 826 Riley Street with visitation and viewing at 10:00 A.M. and service to begin at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Pardee Cemetery. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
Herbert was born July 20, 1931 to Herbert and America Sloan Wallingford in Atchison. He grew up on farms near Effingham, Kansas and attended Clinghan and Pardee Schools, and graduated from Atchison County Community High School.
He married, worked various jobs in the area and joined the Army in 1954. He returned from service, eventually moved to Detroit, MI, and worked for Chrysler Corporation until retirement in 1993.
He leaves to cherish his memory son, Dale, step-children Darold and Karen Whitehead; brothers, Maurice (Pat), Warren (Martha), Larry (Rhonda), and sisters, Kitty (Malcolm) and Dorothy, plus a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.

Margaret E. Osborn 95, of DeKalb, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at a St. Joseph Health Care Center. She was born September 28, 1920 in Faucett, MO, daughter of the late Irene (Stanton) and John Warren. She graduated from Central High School and Northwest Missouri State University with a BS in Education. She retired from DeKalb High School as a School Teacher after 30 years of service. She was a member of the DeKalb Christian Church. Margaret was preceded in death by husband, Kenneth H Osborn, and her parents. Survivors include, son, Harlan (Donna) Osborn of Faucett, MO, granddaughter, Lisa (Robert) Holthus of The Woodlands, TX, grandson, Kenneth (Kim) Osborn of Lincoln, NE, and a great grandson, Tyrus Holthus.

She was born August 1, 1936 in Pittsfield, Illinois.
Joyce graduated from Pittsfield Community High School Class of 1954. She married Harold M. Harshman on November 13, 1955.
She was a homemaker and family was most important to her. Joyce was of the Methodist faith and she loved to decorate for the holidays bringing lasting memories to her children. She enjoyed crafting, creating flower arrangements, antiquing and collecting dolls with her daughter Kim.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mary (Poppele) Faris; brother, Gary Faris; niece, Terri Lynn Long; and nephew, Craig Howell.
Survivors include husband Harold of 60 years and the love of her life; children, Cindy Cooley (Philip), Caledonia, Michigan, Mark Harshman (Kassie) and Kim Thiel (Steve), both of St. Joseph, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Jenna Gray-Shomler (John), Nick Gray, Aaron Gray (Harmony), step-granddaughter, Christina West (Ben), Matthew Harshman (Libby), Brynn Hudson (Jeff), Holly Pitts (James) and Brent Thiel; ten great-grandchildren, Eilam Gray-Shomler, Logan Gray, Lane and Daisy Harshman, Maryn, Hayes and Faith Hudson, Harper, Poppy and Hadley Pitts, and two more on the way; sister, Arlene Howell Turner, Springfield, Missouri; one nephew, Tim Howell (Cheryl); and two nieces, Susan Bueno and Sandy Shaffer (Steve).

Eileen (Butler) Neff
1940-2016

Neff, Eileen obit photoEileen (Butler) Neff was born November 3rd, 1940 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England. She followed her four sisters and immigrated to the United States in 1964. On August 18, 1967 she married Joseph Neff, and in 1976 she became a naturalized US citizen. This year, Eileen and Joe made it to their 49th wedding anniversary.
Before she married Joe, she worked at several companies in various capacities. One of her first jobs in St. Joseph was in the typing pool at the American Angus Association. In later years, she worked at the Municipal Court of St. Joseph, The Cathedral of St. Joseph, The Bone and Joint Clinic, and the former American National Bank. She was an active member of the Catholic Church for many years, and in later years, she became a caregiver for two elderly ladies in the local community.
Eileen was a wonderful cook, specializing in roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, and she loved making her fabulous homemade brownies, pecan tarts, and carrot cookies. Her green thumb with flowers and transplanting small trees and shrubs was another one of her talents, and she loved all types of animals, especially the family pets. As many neighborhood dog owners and walkers know, she always left a bowl of fresh water on the sidewalk of her home for those passing by with a thirsty pet. Eileen was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, neighbors, friends and those in need.
She was preceded in death by her father, George Butler; mother, Winifred Ann (O’Brien) Butler; and sisters, Margaret (Butler) Varenhorst and Winifred (Butler) Addyman.
Surviving are her husband, Joe; son, Michael and son-in-law Michael Bach, Toronto, Canada; sisters, Patricia (Butler) Hodgson, Le Mars, Iowa and Sheila (Butler) Thompson, St. Joseph, Missouri; brothers, Colin Butler (Valerie) and Farrell Butler (Molly), Yorkshire, England; and numerous nieces and nephews.

unnamed (79)MAYETTA – Mary A. Brown, 78, of Mayetta, died Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
She was born November 3, 1937, on the reservation near Mayetta, the daughter of Ray and Elsie Wahwassuck Wahweotten.
Mary was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. She lived by her faith and loved Pow Wows, church, and time with family and friends.
She worked at the Prairie Band Casino and Resort.
She married Richard Logan Brown. He preceded her in death.
Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Edward Wahweotten, and a sister, Inez Dodds.
Survivors include two sons, Allan Brown, Mayetta and Darryl Brown, Topeka; four siblings, Ron Wahweotten, Hoyt, Cheryl Wahweotten Walker, Mayetta, Larry Wahweotten, Wichita, and Orville Rice, Mayetta; four grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
A supper will be held Friday evening, August 19th at the Native American Church on the Potawatomi Reservation. Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning in the Wahwassuck Cemetery. Mary will lie in state until 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton.

Steve Jenkins, 61, Savannah, Missouri passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Shady Lawn Nursing Home.
He was born October 6, 1954 to Zelbert and Margaret (Eighmy) Jenkins in St. Joseph, Missouri.
He was a very talented automotive painter.
He was preceded in death by his mother.

Timothy Allen (Tim) Peterson

unnamed (80)Timothy Allen (Tim) Peterson, 55, of Hiawatha, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2016, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha where he had been a resident a short time.
Tim was born at Hiawatha, April 8, 1961, the youngest of four children born to Virgil and Betty Boyce Peterson and was a lifelong resident of Hiawatha where he graduated from high school with the class of 1983 prior to being employed at BCDS.
Tim loved everyone and considered everyone his friend. His life time girl friend was Chrissie Bryant. They were both Donny and Marie Osmond fans. He loved movies and knew who played in all of them. He loved to dance and also loved to crochet pot holders. There was no debating about him being a KU Fan!
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Terry Peterson, and niece Heather Hiatt.
Survivors include sisters Kathleen Sechler (Gene) and Pamela Peterson, all of Wichita, KS; nephew Bradley Sechler (Dawn) of Prosper, Texas, niece Jessica Kennedy of Surprise, Arizona, and nephew Brett Davis of Peoria, Arizona; a great nephew and 3 great-nieces.

He was born July 3, 1937 in Atchison, Kansas.
Martin married Marilyn Wilson on December 4, 1976 and served in the United States Navy.
He enjoyed travelling and watching the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. Martin loved country music and his family was most important to him.
Mr. LaJoie was a member of IBEW #545.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (French) LaJoie; and brother, Steven “Mike” LaJoie.
Survivors include wife of 39 years, Marilyn; son, James LaJoie (Kristin), St. Joseph, Missouri; three step-sons, Michael Hanson, Atlanta, Georgia, Kevin Hanson (Kari), Amazonia, Missouri and Scott Hanson, St. Joseph, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jeramy Hanson (Sheryl), Sarah Hanson (Dustin Kreiser) and Becky Olson (Jordan); five great-grandchildren, Corbin and Kody Hanson, Desmond Olson, Charleigh Kreiser and Nora Kirkpatrick; two brothers, John “Butch” LaJoie, Jr. (Suzette) and Raymond “Ike” LaJoie (Nancy); and one sister, Judy Brown

Deborah Jean Heck
1953-2016

Deborah Jean Heck, 63, of Princeton, Missouri passed away on August 17, 2016.
Deborah was born in Kansas City, Missouri, May 11, 1953 to Wayne and Barbara (Haase) Hoover.
She was a 1971 Princeton High School graduate.
Deborah was united in marriage to William Eugene Heck on March 17, 1975.
Deborah and her husband, Bill owned and operated The Snack Shack which opened in 1979, and later became the Crossroads Bar & Grill and Liquor Store. She and her husband operated both businesses, working alongside each other every day for over 37 years.
Deborah is preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Jean Hoover; and two nieces, Olivia Hoover and Sarah Hoover.
Survivors include husband, Bill Heck of the home; daughters, Barbara Candice Hamilton (Mike) of Princeton, Missouri and Jessica Dawn Blunk (Chris) of Kearney, Missouri; three grandchildren, Trevor Hamilton, Sarian and Killian Blunk; three brothers, Bill, Bob and Dick Hoover

Floyd H. Sanner
1952-2016

Floyd H. Sanner, 85, of Hamlin, died Tuesday afternoon, August 16, 2016, at the Sabetha Manor where he had been a resident since 2014.
Floyd was born in Brown County, June 9, 1931, the eldest of two sons born to Virgil and Ethel Hollabaugh Sanner and had lived in the Hamlin-Morrill-Sabetha communities his entire life. He attended country school near Sycamore Springs prior to graduating from Morrill High School. After the death of his parents, Floyd helped the area farmers with their needs on the farm. He was a pleasant person to be around and never had a harsh word to say about anyone.
Survivors include a sister in law Barbara Sanner of Hamlin; two nephews: Gary Sanner and Kurt Sanner, both of Hamlin; and numerous cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Herbert.
Cremation is planned is with graveside inurnment planned at the Sabetha Cemetery date pending.
Memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice, which may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.

Kessberger, Doris. obitphotoDoris Darlene Kessberger, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born December 15, 1928 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Doris married Robert Young and together they had two children and were later divorced. She married Edward Kessberger who passed away in 1993.
She was a graduate of Central High School class of 1948. She worked as an office manager for New York Life for many years.
Doris was a member of Sodance, Savannah Sashayers club, American Business Women’s Association past president, and Brookdale Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed dancing, getting her family together and spending time with one another.
She was also preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Anderson and Pearl Hardwicke who helped raise her; brother, Conlee Gibson; and sister, Leota Collor.
Survivors include sons, Robert Young, St. Joseph, Missouri and Dennis R. Young (Donna), St. Joseph, Missouri; companion of 20 years, Walter Ashler; grandsons, Jason Deffenbaugh (Jamie) and Kelly Young (Kiley); great-grandchildren, Hailey and Blake Deffenbaugh, Caroline and Jayce Young and Darren, Dakota, and Cheyenne Ashler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
