James “Jim” C. Brentano
1942-2016

James C. “Jim” Brentano, 74, Atchison, Kansas, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at his residence.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Friday April 22, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Church with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be Thursday, April 21st at 6:30 P.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will follow until 8:30 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedict Parish, St. Benedict School Endowment or Maur Hill-Mount Academy and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Jim was born January 25, 1942 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Bernard and Elizabeth Lyons Brentano. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School, graduating from Maur Hill Prep School in 1960.
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1967. Jim served in the U.S. Navy Seabees and during that time served two tours during the Vietnam conflict.
He and Grace Nolte were united in marriage on November 23, 1968 at St. Joseph’s Church in Atchison.
Jim was employed for the Servaes Brothers Construction Company for several years and then worked as a heavy equipment operator for Marlatt Construction Company for over thirty years until his retirement in 2004.
He was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish and a life member of V.F.W. Post #1175 in Atchison.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Brentano, of the couple’s home in Atchison, three sons, Chris Brentano, Lenexa, KS; Jason (Jennifer) Brentano, Shawnee, KS; Curtis Brentano, Fairway, KS; five brothers, Tom (Judy) Brentano, Salt Lake City, UT; Mike (Ann) Brentano, Overland Park, KS; Steve (Alice) Brentano, Overland Park, KS; Dave ( Jackie) Brentano, Parkville, MO; Mark (Kris) Brentano, Lenexa, KS; four sisters, Sharon Leonard, Kansas City, MO; Barb (Ken) Lane, Independence, MO; Mary Beth (Terry) Griffin, Atchison, KS; Susan (David) Castino, Santa Rosa, CA; and three grandchildren, Allison Brentano, Nathan Brentano and Thomas Brentano.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ralph B. Ward, Jr.
1939-2016

Ralph B. Ward, Jr., 77, of Onaga, died Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Eastridge Nursing Facility in Centralia.
He was born March 3, 1939 at Centralia, the son of Ralph B. Ward, Sr. and Irene Harris Ward. Ralph graduated from Centralia High School in 1957.
He had worked for many years at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Topeka.
Ralph had served on the Onaga City Council and was a member of the Onaga Lions Club and a charter member of the Onaga Jaycees.
He married Catherine E. Meyer on January 16, 1960 at Seneca. She survives, of the home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Alan Ward, and a sister, Gail Elder.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kim Runnebaum and husband Lynn, Marysville; two sons, Ben Ward and wife Gina, Marysville and Greg Ward, St. Petersburg, FL; a brother, Kyle Ward and wife Barbara, Topeka; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 23rd at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga. Burial will follow in the Centralia Cemetery. Eva M. Savago
1918-2016

She was born November 3, 1918 at Manhattan, the daughter of Jess and Grace Carmicheal Lister.
She was a former member of St. Patrick Catholic Church at Coal Creek until it closed, and then a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga.
Eva married Andrew Myers on September 23, 1936. He died June 11, 1972. She married Raymond Savago on December 22, 1972. He died June 1, 1993.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, Mary Margaret Meade and Bernice Nolte, a grandson, Rodney Nolte, two great grandchildren, six brothers and one sister.
Survivors include four sons, Andrew Myers (Vicki), Temecula, CA, Galen Myers (Wanda), Joplin, MO, and Douglas Myers (Rexanne) and Anthony Myers (Debra), all of Topeka; four daughters, Grace Correll (Gilbert), Onaga, Judith Ransdell (Jimmie), Linn Valley, KS, Hazel Kerr (Larry), Columbia, MO and Sandra Wagner, Fulton, MO; a sister, Jeannie Ellenbecker, Topeka; forty-two grandchildren, eighty-nine great grandchildren, forty-three great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great granddaughter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23rd at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery at Coal Creek. Eva will lie in state until 4:00 p.m. Friday and until 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. She will lie in state after 5:00 p.m. Friday at the church where a visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Parish Rosary said at 7:00. Neal L. Smith, Jr.
1964-2016

unnamed (4)Neal L. Smith, Jr., 51, Atchison, Kansas died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at his residence.
A Celebration of Life Service for Neal will be Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at United Methodist Church in Atchison. Neal has been cremated and will be inurned at a later time at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Friends are welcome to leave a “small” memento at the funeral home to be placed in the grave with Neal at his committal. Memorial contributions are suggested to Sgt. David Enzbrenner Scholarship Fund and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Neal was born December 16, 1964 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Neal L. Smith, Sr. and Dorothy Frances Barnett. He attended Atchison Elementary Schools and graduated from Atchison High School, where he was active in the football program while in school.
Following his education, Neal was employed with Atchison Casting Corporation and then with Bradken as a fabricator/molder for more than thirty years until his untimely death.
He was a member of Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was an avid golfer, and a member of Pineview Country Club. He enjoyed spending his spare time with numerous friends on the golf course, caring for the golf course and also tinkering with toy trains as a hobby. Neal was well known in his community for volunteering and always being available to help others. He was especially proud of his work customizing two golf carts just the way he wanted them.
Survivors include a sister, Amanda Smith, Leavenworth, KS; a brother, Damien Smith, LaSelva, CA; step-mother, LeAnn Smith Karbaumer, Platte City, MO; a niece, Jordan Downing, Topeka, KS; aunts, uncles, cousins, many other family members and numerous friends.

Ellis Daniel Thomas
1940-2016

unnamed (5)Ellis Daniel Thomas, 76, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in Saint Joseph, MO. He was born January 21, 1940 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Mayme and Stanley Thomas, and they precede him in death. He graduated from Benton High School in 1957 and St. Joseph Junior College. He then attended the University of Missouri at Rolla, and after his retirement from AT&T, he attended Missouri Western State University. He served in the United States Army from 1963 – 1965 and was stationed in West Germany. On June 19, 1976 he married Janice Ridge, and they shared 39 years of marriage together. He retired after over 40 years of service with perfect attendance from the former Southwestern Bell & now AT&T telephone companies as an ESS & Digital Switchman. Ellis enjoyed electronics, radios, and ham radios. He loved fishing, mushroom hunting, nature and traveling, and he was a Christian. Survivors include, wife, Janice Thomas of the home, son, Scott Thomas of St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Susan (Tim) Conard of St. Joseph, MO, two grandsons, Kai & Kendrick.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Rupp Funeral Home with Pastor Rodney Krumme officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Mount Auburn Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Salvation Army.

He was born October 1, 1945 in Atchison, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila; and parents, John Sr. and Irene (Churchill) Burnett.

Marie Ada Kidd

She was born July 3, 1921 in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Marie married George Kidd, Jr. on February 20, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas.
There is neither time nor space enough to share about the amazing life she lived and what a rare jewel of a woman she was. A welder, homemaker, and musician, she is with her Lord now and is dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, Paul and Emma (Hahn) Stiles; sisters, Hazel Carr and Helen Minton; and a brother, Glenn Stiles.
Survivors include 4 children, 14 grandchildren, their spouses, and many other members of her extended family.

1937-2016

Rebecca Ann Wood 78, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Sunday April 17, 2016 at a Saint Joseph hospital. She was born August 8, 1937 in Cranberry, Pennsylvania daughter of Eva & Aubrey Singleton. She married John Henry Wood on 1959, he survives of the home. She graduated from high school, and was a homemaker, and a member of Souls Harbor Pentecostal church. Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include husband, John of the home, and a niece, Mary (Raymond) Radil of Peoria, AZ. She will be cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. There are no scheduled visitation or memorial services at this time.

Marie Flaherty
1918-2016

Marie Flaherty, 97, formerly of Havensville, died Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Onaga Health & Rehab.
She was born Ocotber 22, 1918 at Hanover, the daughter of Casper and Anna Hora Bauer.
Marie was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga and had been a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church at Coal Creek until it closed.
She married Harold Jeanneret. He died September 11, 1944. She married Everett W. Flaherty on March 4, 1946 at Coal Creek. He died April 6, 1998.
Marie was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Kathleen M. Flaherty, a sister, Rose Brown, and two brothers, Frederick Bauer and Charles Bauer.
Survivors include two daughters, Carroll Gudenkauf and husband Don, Onaga, and Marilyn Faunce and husband Jerry, Topeka; a step-son, Harold Jeanneret, Jr. and wife Doris, Onaga; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Coal Creek. Donald D. Manville
1916-2016

Donald D. Manville, 100, Wathena, passed into the hands of the Lord and was reunited with his wife on April 18, 2016, at his home. He was born March 29, 1916, in Wathena, KS., the 4th of 9 children born to William H. and Anna Wagen-knecht Manville. He graduated from Wathena High School in 1934 and was a life-long resident of Wathena. He married Lorene Gray on April 20, 1939. She died just weeks before their 65th wedding anniversary in 2004. He served on the Gladden Elementary School Board for 20 years and the Wathena High School Board for 9 years. He was one of the original board members of the Burr Oak Levy Board and a former member of the Elks. He was in the earth moving construction business with Manville-Miller Construction Co. for 20 years. When he retired after 60 years of farming, he became the Regional Sales Manager for a major seed company, responsible for the states of Kansas, Missouri, and parts of Nebraska and Iowa. He was a member of the Wathena United Methodist Church for 55 years and served in many capacities, including Lay-Delegate to Annual Conference for 20 years, chairman of the Trustees and served on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. He was currently a member of Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Joseph, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 4 brothers: Henry F., Wilbur C., Charles W., Peter A. Manville; and 3 sisters: Jessie Davis, Maxine Embery and Bettie Brown. Survivors include 2 daughters: Joyce Langford of Richardson, Tx. and Donna Lance of Savannah, Mo.; 2 sons: Bill Manville of St. Joseph Mo., and Pompano Beach, Fl., and Donald R. and his wife Michelle Manville of Wathena, Ks. and The Villages, Fl.; 1 sister: Wilma Gummig of St. Joseph, Mo.; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Bendena. A parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at St. Benedict’s Church with visitation to follow until 8 PM. Ruthanna was born on August 19, 1925, on the family farm northwest of Bendena, the daughter of Martin A. and Hilda (Keimig) Boersting. She grew up near Bendena attending schools there prior to graduating from Bendena High School. She attended Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison, Kansas and taught music in the grade schools of Bendena and Troy, Kansas. After her marriage, she taught private piano lessons in her home for twenty five years.
Ruthanna was a long time member of St. Vincent’s Catholic Church, Severance, until its closing and was a former organist and president of its Altar Society. She became a member of St. Benedict’s Church, Bendena, and of the Women’s Council of the church. Ruthanna was a former member of the Parish Council there serving as secretary. She enjoyed travelling, visiting most of the states including Alaska and Hawaii, music and reading.
She and Ferdie L. Libel, of Severance, were married on September 3, 1947, at St. Benedict’s Church, Bendena. He died on August 23, 1986. She later married Arden D. Crawford, of Odessa, MO, on April 29, 1989 at St. Benedict’s Church, continuing to live on the Libel family farm for 69 years. He preceded her in death on January 31, 2002.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn A. (Libel) and William R. Young, Bendena, and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Martin W. Boersting, preceded her in death, as well as her parents and a step-daughter, Linda (Crawford) Cheek.

Lester graduated from Rockport High School Class of 1953, then attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for one year and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education.
He proudly served in the United State Army from 1955-1957 and was a school teacher for 30 years, 24 years at Humboldt in St. Joseph until retiring in 1991.
Lester was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the American Legion. He volunteered for 25 years at the Jesse James and Patee House Museums and was especially known at the Jesse James Museum.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and a brother.
Survivors include four sisters, Wilma Farley, Country Club, Missouri, Edline McGinnis, Omaha, Nebraska, Lillie Williams and Arlette Duty of St. Joseph, Missouri; niece, Sharri Duty; nephews, Kenny and Kevin Duty; and other numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was born January 15, 1943 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of William and Betty June Mulvaney Turner. She attended Atchison Public Elementary Schools and Mt. Saint Scholastica Academy.
Mary Jane was a homemaker to her husband and children. She enjoyed playing bingo, reading, socializing with friends and most of all spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include two son, Allen Merritt, Atchison, KS, John Corkins, Lansing, KS, two daughters, Laura (Jerry) Koopman, Falls City, NE, Natalie Whimley, Lansing, KS, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a sister, Leigh Fortier, Los Angeles, CA. Bill was born April 7, 1929 in Denton, Kansas to Charles & Mary (Molinare) Bottiger.
He graduated Denton High School, was a member of the Army National Guards & Wathena Masonic Lodge. Bill retired from Wire Rope for 30 years.
Bill married Marjorie Shuster on June 23, 1978. She survives of the home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Kenneth & a sister, Lila Mae Keebler.

He was born August 3, 1938 to Nathan and Hattie (Colburn) Ford.
Raymond married Velma Loretta Shipley February 6, 1964.
He proudly served in the US Army and worked as a welding inspector at Midwest Conveyor, retiring in 1999 after twenty-five years.
He enjoyed welding and also liked to fish in his spare time. Raymond was a member of the American Welding Society, Deer Park Methodist Church in St. Joseph and The Northland Cathedral in Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gary Ford.
Survivors include wife of fifty-two years, Loretta; children, Denise Brown (Dick), Pamela Spiek (Dave), Kelly Bowen (Dave), Michelle Van Dyke (Don), as well as Curtis, Darlene, and Rickey; brothers, Frankie Ford (Kelli) and George Ford (Terri); sister, Sara Seiter (Louie); and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

neilNeil J. Smith, 56, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in Saint Joseph. He was born December 4, 1959 in Yerington, Nevada son of Mary & Norman Smith. He worked as a concrete finisher and was the monitor for the cold weather shelter. He recently joined as a part-time staff member with the Community Mission Corporation. He loved to fish, hunt, and go camping, and he was a member of the ROC Fellowship Church. Neil was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two sons, Anthony (Cynthia) Smith of Kansas City, MO, and Zachary Smith of St. Joseph, MO, two daughters, Serina Smith and Corrine Smith of St. Joseph, MO, 11 grandchildren, a brother, Norman (Kim) Smith of Cameron, MO, and a sister, Leila (Mike) Tebow of St. Joseph, MO. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Tuesday April 19, 2016 with a Memorial Service starting at 7:00 pm at the ROC Fellowship Church. Dora Edde Slavin
1910-2016

unnamedDora Edde Slavin, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 9, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.
Dora was a longtime member of First Christian Church of Hiawatha.
She was born to Charles Joe and Pearl Reser Edde, at a farm near Powhattan, KS, July 22, 1910. In 1912, her parents and five children moved to her grandparents homestead near Horton, KS, where she attended Hickory Grove School and Horton High School. Dora graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1928, and from Kansas City General Hospital School of Nursing; post graduate nursing at KU Medical Center. Upon graduation, Dora became night nursing supervisor of the Kansas City General-a 750 bed facility all charity hospital.
Dora was united in marriage to Manuel Slavin MD, US Army in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1961, at Shreveport, LA. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Dora after her husband’s death, she came to live with her mother Pearl Edde at Hiawatha. After her mother’s death in 1971, she moved to Tulsa to live with her sister and husband. She served as Red Cross hostess on the USS Haven Navy hospital ship when dry docked at Terminal Island, Long Beach. This ship brought 2000 patients from Pearl Harbor where it docked in Long Beach. She also served as volunteer RN at blood banks at Long Beach and Tulsa, OK. Dora and her sister Effie, moved from Tulsa to Hiawatha in 1990 to make their home. Effie died in August 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two other sisters: Cecil Shaiffer, Edith Cash; and a brother Sherman Edde. In 2008, her cousin Carl Reid had a heart attack and he stayed with her in her home. He continued staying with her so she could live in her home so she wouldn’t be alone. Dora attributed her longevity and many pain free years to wisdom and guidance from God and Jesus healing power, along with prayers from her Church family.
Survivors include a nephew Robert (Anne) Cash of Hiawatha; a niece Norma Rocha of Gadson, AL; cousins: Carl Reid, Arthur (Martha) Wenger, Vernon Wenger, Josephine Merchant; and other relatives.
Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Friday 15, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, with Reverend Dennis Alan Fullbright officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
The family will meet with friends one hour prior to service Friday. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 6 Thursday evening.

Richard E. Tucker
1925-2016

Richard E. Tucker, a native of Wathena, KS passed away April 10, 1016 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, MO, at the age of 91. He was born and raised in the Palermo, KS area to Edward and Beatrice Tucker January 17, 1925. Richard was proud of his service to his country and the Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific operation during WWII and was recalled to service during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion having received his 70 year pin. He married his wife Marjorie in 1949 and enjoyed 61 years together before her death in 2010. After the wars he joined Ralph and Tom Yarnetl to establish Tucker/Yarnell Bros. Construction Company. They built well over 100 custom homes throughout Doniphan County and around the St. Joseph area. Richard enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting and fishing with his son-in-law and grandsons, as well as camping at Branson, Bennet Springs and other sporting lakes and parks were his favorites. Richard kept busy at home tending to raising registered Tamworth hogs and his Hereford cattle. In the latter years his passion was travelling with the Avion Club to places throughout the USA. Surviving Richard are his daughter Deanna (Robert) Hewins, three grandchildren, Scott (Kelly), Craig and Jill (Scott) Butler and four great grandchildren, Jackie, Bryson, Hallie and Jessica. Richard is to be cremated and there will be a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday, April 16 at Harman-Rohde Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 11:00 at the Belmont Cemetery in Wathena. Wathena, Kansas Eunice Mae (Kenney) Lieffring, 88, Wathena, Kansas passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Mosaic Life Care, surrounded by her loving family.
Eunice was born on June 24, 1927 in Brewer, Maine to the late Madeline Kenney Wedge. She graduated from Brewer High School and worked at Tucker’s Shoe Factory.
On January 31, 1949, she married Arnold. Lieffring, and became a dedicated USAF military wife. Being a military wife meant that she would live in Maine, Georgia, Texas, New Mexico and Iowa, and she made each home a happy place for her husband and two daughters. When Arnold retired in 1964 she and Arnold moved their family to their final home in Wathena, Kansas, Arnold’s hometown. Eunice was a long time member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She is survived by daughters, Jo (Raymond) Miller Jan (Bob) Bradshaw Four Grandchildren, Jeremy (Lara) Miller Shea Bradshaw Jerred (T.J.) He received his 50 year membership pin from the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and attended many craft shows as a vendor and was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

She was a member and very active with the Helena United Methodist Church and loved to entertain.
She enjoyed baking, cooking, her flower gardens, taking lunch to the field, and taking care of her family, most of all her only grandchild, Wade.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlin and Hazel (Adams) Baker; and brothers, Jerry and Donald Baker.

She enjoyed growing tomatoes, and plants, fishing and loved to cook, and attend family outings. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Nancy McGarrah. He was born September 6, 1923 in Edgerton, Illinois and graduated from Reynolds High School in 1942. He spent most of his adult life in Andrew County.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from 1942-1945. He was very proud of being able to witness the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima.
He then worked for Crane Construction Company in Savannah, Missouri as the Superintendent for 17 years. Richard was the co-owner of the Dairy Queen in Savannah, Missouri from 1972-1977.
Richard married Dorothy Horn on December 7, 1946. She preceded him in death on October 27, 1979.
He was a member of Rosendale Christian Church. He and his good friend, Dorothy Griggs enjoyed wintering in Central Florida. He loved woodworking and NASCAR, especially Kyle Busch. Most of all he loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; parents, John and Marie (McGinnis) Hollopeter-Humes; and two sisters.

Jane was born in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Charles I. and Anna Victoria Walz Hager. She was the youngest of six children
She and James G. Weingart were united in marriage on January 1946 at St. Benedict’s Church. Mr. Weingart preceded her in death on June 13, 1989.
Jane was a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Retiring as the Manager of Operator Services after 40 years of service. Jane served on a number of Atchison women groups. She drove a number of patients to Kansas City for their doctors’ appointments. She loved her Big 8 and then Big 12 basketball attending the tournaments with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling, bridge and cocktail parties.
Survivors include a son Robert C. (Adair) Weingart, Lenexa, Kansas, two grandchildren, Jay (Erika) Bouck, Destin, Florida, Josh (Amy) Bouck, Austin, Texas, and four great grandchildren Lindsey, Ashley, Austin and Zoe.
She was preceded in death by her five siblings Walter Hager, Mabel Scarlett, Nobel Hager, Grace Runyan and Gladys Munson.

Ronald “Kent” Ahrens
1937-2016

ronRonald “Kent” Ahrens 79, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at his home, in Saint Joseph, MO. He was born January 16, 1937 in Edwardsville, IL, son of Bernice and Edward Ahrens. He graduated the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Management. He then served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army as a Helicopter Pilot. He worked at Ralston Purina, Blueside Tannery, and retired from Shelter Insurance as an agent. Kent was known for his positive, can do attitude and was very involved in the community serving as a St. Joseph City Councilman in the 1970’s, and on numerous boards, such as Meril. He was a member and past president of Sertoma and was instrumental in establishing a deaf camp located at Camp Marvin Hillyard every summer. His other passion with his former wife Phyllis was their love for animals and his numerous adopted new friends. He was a member of ASCAP and the Wyatt Park Christian Church of which he was also very active. After Phyllis passed away he formed a cooking ministry, which cooked meals and baked goods for people that recently had a death in their family. That was Kent, he was always doing things for other people. Kent was preceded in death by 1st wife Nancy, and 2nd wife, Phyllis, and his parents. Survivors include, daughter, Darcy Ahrens (Robyn Walter) of Shawnee Mission, KS, son, Jeff (Gail) Ahrens of Saint Louis, MO, grandchildren, Amy, Chris, Emily Ahrens of Ferguson, MO, and Duncan and Owen Walter of Shawnee, KS, two brothers, Gary (Kathy) Ahrens and Bob (Ella) Ahrens of Edwardsville, IL. barbBarbara Jo Callaway Miller, 78, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at home with family and friends, battling lymphoma and arthritis. She was born October 7, 1937 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Marjorie and Earl Calloway, they preceded her in death. She worked at Twin Cedars, her family’s restaurant, Snow White Restaurant, Missouri Methodist Hospital as a surgical nurse, and Bender’s Home Health. Barbara Jo put herself through Methodist Hospital Nursing School. She married her loving husband, Jerry Lee Miller on August 22, 1958 in St. Joseph, MO, and he survives of the home. Barbara Jo loved her family and spent as much time as possible together. She was a member of Agency Christian Church, Christian Women’s Fellowship, St. Joe Garden Club, Herb Club, and a member of KC Roadrunner Club. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Kevin Martin Crossfield, Jr. to cystic fibrosis and her brother, Earl, and sister-on-law, Charlotte to cancer. craigCraig “Shades” Carl Sonderegger 64, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at his home. Born August 9, 1951 in Wichita, KS, son of Carl and Elenore Sonderegger. He served in the Marines and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked at Union Millrite Carpenter. He loved going to Bike Rally’s and riding his motorcycle. He had lots of friends and loved playing with his grandbabies and his animals. He also enjoyed flower gardening, a member of Freedom of Road Riders and a Christian. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, and step-daughter, Adrianne Hart. Survivors include, companion Janice Hart of the home, step-son, Christopher Hart, grandson he raised, Dylan Hart, other grandchildren, Emily & Baylee Bercegay, and Felicia Campbell, two sisters, Anne Yegge of Albuquerque, NM, and Janet St. Clair of Yakima, WA.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am, on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Chaplain Tom Crawley officiating, The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the National Cemetery at 12:30 PM Wednesday with honors provided by the United States Marine Corp.

Evelyn A. Loyd

eveEvelyn A. Loyd, 94, of Hiawatha, died peacefully Monday evening, April 4, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha, where she had been a resident a few weeks.
Evelyn was born February 26, 1922, at Denton, Kansas, one of five daughters born to Charles and Lucy May Swartz Gish and had lived in the northeast Kansas area her entire life. She grew up at Denton, attended grade school there prior to graduating Denton High School with the class of 1939. Evelyn graduated Highland Community Junior College with an associate’s degree prior to attending Kansas State University for a year.
Mrs. Loyd was a longtime member of the Powhattan United Methodist Church and UMW of the Church. While her children were young, she was a 4-H sewing leader. Also a member of Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion Auxiliary; NeoCentury Study Club; Grand Prairie FCE Unit; and the Grand Prairie Club. She also enjoyed getting together with several ladies and quilting for the Brown County Historical Society. One of her greatest joys was making wedding dresses for her daughter and grand-daughter.
She was married to Carroll H. Loyd, October 30, 1943, at her parent’s home at Denton. They farmed and raised livestock near Powhattan until retiring in 1983. She also drove a school bus for Powhattan Schools for 7 years. They moved to Hiawatha to make their home in 2001. Through the years, they enjoyed taking trips with the family. He died July 8, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son Max in 2004; three sisters: Harriet Myers, Elva Mae Booth, and Mildred Eby.
Survivors include three children: Marjorie Loyd, and Duane Loyd, both of Topeka, Carolyn (John) Andres of Hiawatha; a daughter in law Georgia Loyd of rural Hiawatha; a sister Doris Dollar of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren: Matthew (Allison) Loyd of Tulsa, OK, Lisa (Jeff) Meyer of Ottawa, Bradley (Ashley) Andres of the family farm north of Powhattan; 7 great-grandchildren: Madeline Loyd; Jotham, Josiah, and Elizabeth Meyer; Ava, Cooper and Brentley Andres..
A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Powhattan United Methodist Church, with Reverend Priscilla Davies officiating. Interment will follow at the Powhattan Cemetery.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. Friday, where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 that evening.

Edith Mabel McNett 72, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday April 5, 2016 at her home. She was born April 30, 1943 in San Jose, California daughter of Helen & Donald Cunningham. She graduated from Lafayette High School 1961, and worked as a Secretary. She enjoyed fishing, watching all sports and football, crossword puzzles, gardening, and working in her yard. She especially loved her grandchildren and family gatherings. She was a Christian. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Donald, Robert G., and Jerry Cunningham, two sisters, Charlotte Calloway, and Nella M. Veale. She is survived by four daughters, Debra Kay McNett of St. Joseph, MO, Teresa Foster of Stewartsville, MO, Kimberly Ann McNett and Michele Rene McNett, and a son, Butch Edward (Sherry) McNett of Saint Joseph, MO, 9 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. Freddie Campbell Kling

Kling, Freddie obit photoFreddie Campbell Kling, 86, Mound City, passed away Sunday, April 3, at Cameron Veterans Home following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
He was born October 5, 1929, the son of Fred and Hazel Curnutt Kling, in Barnard, MO. After graduation from Barnard High School, he worked for the MO State Highway Department. Fred joined the Air Force during the Korean War and served as an inflight refueler. Following discharge, he returned to work for the Highway Department as a center striper. In 1958, he began 31 years of service with the MO State Highway Patrol, retiring a sergeant. Highlights of his patrol service included being on one of the first sniper teams and being one of the first corporals when that rank was established.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Bertha Million, Margaret Dougan, Gladys Hornbuckle, Betty Hinton, George, & Lawrence.
Survivors include wife of 30 years, Kim, son Mark (Cathey), daughter Andrea Davis (Jason), niece Peggy Moore, and several other nieces and nephews.
Fred’s life was dedicated to service and protection of others. He loved traveling, fishing, hunting, sports of all kinds, and keeping his vehicles spotless.
He was an elder emeritus of the First Christian Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Celebration of life 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, First Christian Church, Mound City, Missouri followed by military rites at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. He was born September 24, 1927 in King City, Missouri.
Earl proudly served in the United States Navy from 1945-1948 and worked for St. Joseph Light and Power as an operations superintendent for 41 years.
He married Mary Alberta Meek on June 17, 1950 in a double ceremony alongside her sister, Helen Gregory (R.B. Gregory).
He was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church, American Legion Post #359 and was on the Board of Directors of Progressive Community Services.
Earl enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially quail and mushroom. He had been active with the Boy Scouts of America, where he had been a scout master and very active in boy’s baseball. He volunteered his time during many elections as an election clerk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Sarah “Zoe” (Ficklin) Tullis; son, Matthew Shawn Tullis; brother, Richard Tullis; and sisters, Dorothy LaJoie and Geraldine Hovey.
Survivors include wife of 65 years, Mary; children, Darren Clay Tullis and Michael “Starr” Tullis (Tammy), St. Joseph, Missouri; two grandchildren, Ashley Callahan (Ryan) and Andrew Tullis; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Haylen Tullis; brother, Billie Tullis (Wilda); sister, Catherine Talmadge (Gordon); and numerous nieces and nephews.
