ST. JOSEPH – Diana Gay (Sells) King, 55, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born June 22, 1959 to Eldon and Beatrice (Kerns) Sells in St. Joseph.
Diana married Ronnie King on January 21, 1984. He survives of the home.
She was a member of Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church, enjoyed walking her dog and loved her grandchildren dearly. Diana was loved by all.
Mrs. King was preceded in death by her sister, Gail Elaine Sells; and aunt, Sharon Walker.

Rogers, Betty
CHEROKEE VILLAGE, Ark. – Betty Mae Rogers, 89, died December 4, 2014,at Parkdale Manor Nursing Home, Maryville, Mo. She was born September 18, 1925, in Davenport, Iowa to William A. and Elizabeth (Guy) Ceperley. She was a graduate of Davenport High School.
After graduation Betty went to work for Northwestern Bell as a long distance operator. While working there she met Lawrence “Pat” Rogers who worked as a long distance line technician for AT&T. They were married on July 20, 1951, and lived in Davenport for the next 29 years.
Betty left Northwestern Bell in 1948 and went to work in the bookkeeping department of the Davenport Bank and Trust. In the early 1960’s Betty returned to Northwestern Bell where she worked in the business office as part of their customer service.
Betty and Pat retired in September, 1980, and moved to Cherokee Village. Betty was active in the Republican Party and attended gatherings in both Davenport and Cherokee Village. She enjoyed golfing and remained active in her Spring River Presbyterian Church, where she directed their Clothes and Food Pantry Mission for several years. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, in 1984; and her brothers Richard and William, Jr.
She is survived by a twin brother, Reverend Robert Ceperley, Maryville; a niece, Jennifer Schieber (Cletus), Maryville; and five nephews: David, Stanberry, Mo.; Mark (Susan), Blue Springs, Mo.; Tim, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Jeff (Robin), Billings, Mo.; and Mike, Maryville.
Betty has been cremated under the direction of Price Funeral Home, Maryville. Funeral services will be held at Spring River Presbyterian Church, Hardy, Ark., at a later date, with committal at the Church’s Columbarium. ST. JOSEPH – Randall “Randy” Lee Hunt, 45, passed away suddenly Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Mosaic Life care in St. Joseph.
He was born March 11, 1969 in St. Joseph and graduated from Benton high school, class of 1987. He worked at P-1 Group, with Union Local 45 as a Pipe Fitter. He played baseball in high school, enjoyed playing softball, pool and golf, but most of all he enjoyed Nascar racing, and hanging out with He-man Woman Haters Club with his brother-in-law, Jimmy Gaddy. He was a Christian.
Randy was preceded in death by father, Robert “Red” Hunt; maternal grandfather, Ellis Pummell; paternal grandparents, Robert and Hazel Hunt.
Survivors include, wife, Lisa Hunt of the home; mother, Sharon Hicks and husband Jim of St. Joseph; daughters, Sara Hunt and Andrea Hunt of Agency, Mo.; and Hannah Call of St. Joseph; sons, Brian, David, and Matthew Barnes; a grandchild, Riley Call; three brothers, Mike Hicks, Scott Hicks, and Christopher Hunt all of St. Joseph; sisters, Jenny Hunt and Jamie Dudeck of St. Joseph; and his maternal grandmother, Maxine Pummell of St. Joseph.

Chuck was an avid golfer at Fairview and avid bowler. He was inducted into the St. Joseph Bowling Hall of Fame in 2003.

ST. JOSEPH – Stella Mae Aladeen, 88, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, November 29, 2014.
She was born September 14, 1926 to Marlin and Crystal (Forrester) Carr in Logan, Mo.
Stella Mae married Kenneth E. Aladeen on April 22, 1949.
She graduated as Salutatorian from Lafayette High School class of 1943. She was an Avon Representative for forty-seven years. Stella Mae was a member of Hope United Church of Christ and was active with Chapter HY of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Mrs. Aladeen was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by and was devoted to: her husband of 65 years, Kenny; children, Kathy Corrigan (Mark), Becky Gossett (Bill) and Scott Aladeen (Lynn); five grandchildren; and many dear cousins and friends.

ST. JOSEPH – Dennis D. Milbourn, 66, died Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Mosaic Life Care.
He was born May 20, 1948 to Doyle and Rosalie (Nelson) Milbourn in St. Joseph.
Dennis married Donna J. Beaty on June 2, 1973. She survives of the home.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict, where he was a Staff Sergeant. Dennis retired from Southwest Airlines and was a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Milbourn was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lonnie Milbourn.

ST. JOSEPH – Crystal Fern Patterson, 93, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 in a St. Joseph, health care center. She was born October 10, 1921 in Clarinda, Iowa, daughter of Vertie and John H. Davison. She graduated from Maitland high school, and was a homemaker. She enjoyed art and painting, crocheting, sewing and crafts, and was a Christian.
Crystal was preceded in death by husband, William Patterson; her parents; two brothers, Harold and Dennis Davison; and three sisters, Edith Sarico, Irene Chestnut, and Amy Spangler.
Survivors include, son, Douglas (Sue) Patterson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; daughter, Debbie (Carl) Finney of St. Joseph; and son, Dennis Patterson of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren; and 19, great-grandchildren.

ST. JOSEPH – John Grace, 78, died Monday, November 17, 2014 at Mosaic Life Care.
He was born on February 22, 1936 to Curtis and Virginia (Pemberton) Grace in Albany, Mo.
John married Karen Vavra on October 6, 1962. Their 52 year marriage has served as a model of love, commitment, integrity, and fun. John was devoted to his family.
John graduated from Albany High School. He was Vice President of Future Farmers of America from 1954-55. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in Agriculture Economics. John was employed by The Quaker Oats Company for 37 years, retiring as Plant Superintendent.
John was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church. He was a dedicated member of the Mizzou Alumni Association where he served in many positions, including President of the Buchanan County Board of Directors and culminating in election to the Governing Board of the Association. He was also a Director of the Downtown Rotary Club #32, a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Royal Order of Jesters Court #97. John truly enjoyed working with others throughout the community.
John also enjoyed travel, spending time in Colorado, snow skiing, golf, fly fishing, woodworking, and gardening. He was loving, generous, kind, and valued friendship. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Charlene was born April 28, 1924, in Maryville, to James and Daisy (Shelton) Ebrecht. Charlene was a retail clerk for the F.W. Woolworth Company in St. Joseph and Maryville.
She married Basil Williams in September, 1941 in Maryville, and was a member of the First Baptist Church while living in Maryville.
Preceding in death were her parents; husband, Basil Elwood Williams, 1971; and nine brothers and sisters.

ST. JOSEPH – Penney Magoon-Smith, 68, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Mosaic Life Care.
Penney was born on November 10, 1946 in St. Joseph to Vernon and Helen (Wright) Marqui.
She graduated from Lafayette High School, Class of 1965. She also graduated from Methodist Medical Center School of Nursing and was a Registered Nurse.
Penney was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Larry Moore and Bob Magoon; and brother, Bud Marqui.
Surviving family includes husband, Jack Smith, of the home; sons, Marc Moore, St. Joseph; Trevor Moore, Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren, sisters, Phyllis Marqui, St. Joseph; Kim Reser of Parkville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Penney will be sadly missed by her lifelong group of friends.

BURLINGTON JUNCTION, Mo. – Darel Ray Galyan, 73, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at Mosaic Life Care Center, St. Joseph.
Darel was born June 17, 1941, in Nebraska City, Neb., to Claude and Ethel McConaha Galyan.
He and Wanda Jean Vaughn were married February 5, 1965, in Oxnard, Calif.
A veteran of the United States Army, Darel was retired after 20 years as an Alaska State Trooper.
Darel was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Gravette, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Melvin Galyan and brother Jerry Galyan.
Surviving are his wife Wanda Galyan, of the home in Burlington Junction; sons, Jerry (Tonja) Galyan and Doug (Katy) Galyan, Burlington Junction; and daughter, Tina (Tim) Heily, Naches, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister Patty (Dave) Rumery, Talmage, Neb.

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Carl W. Sparks, 92, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri died Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Sugar Land Methodist Hospital, Sugar Land.
He was born July 9, 1922 to Jacob and Myrtle (Beckwith) Sparks in Maysville, Mo.
Carl proudly served in the United State Army during WWII and worked as an analyst for Conoco for 30 years.
Mr. Sparks was a member of the Charity Zeredatha Lodge No. 189, A.F.& A.M., 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Moila Shrine.
He enjoyed fishing, bowling, photography and sports.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille (Stahl) Sparks; second wife, Georgia (Wall) Sparks; parents; brother, Lorne Dale Sparks; and sister, Fern Trice.

ST. JOSEPH – Rosalie Harris, died November 12, 2014 at the age of 91.
Rosalie is finally at peace after battling Alzheimer’s for the last fifteen years. She has been a resident at Saxton Care Center for the last thirteen years. Rosalie was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph “South End” since her birth in 1923.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd (Junior) Harris; her parents, Steve and Julia Milovich; and brother-in-law, Walter Gnat.
She will be greatly missed by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Gnat; and nephews, Andy and Larry Gnat and their families.
Rosalie was an exceptional woman. She worked at the Stock Yards Exchange for over thirty years in the insurance business, starting out as an assistant to Tony Lord. She eventually became office manager when the business was acquired by State Farm and continued in that role until her retirement. Rosalie worked in an area usually dominated by men, but her intelligence and hard work overcame that. Rosalie had the loyalty and respect of all her business acquaintances. Rosalie and her late husband, Floyd, were avid outdoorsmen and spent their retirement traveling to either national parks or Lake of the Ozarks.
Thanksgiving dinner will always bring fond memories to the family since Rosalie hosted that day every year until her illness prevented it. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Saxton Care Center for all the years of exceptional care.

ST. JOSEPH – Wesley B. Grable, 82, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Mosaic Life Care.
He was born January 10, 1932 to Thomas and Thelma (Allsup) Grable in Fair, Mo.
Wesley married Shirley Edwards on October 25, 1996. She survives of the home. He owned Wes Grable Company, Incorporated. Mr. Grable liked metal detecting, fishing, card playing and golf. He also enjoyed being a snowbird in Texas and Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Allen Grable; daughter, Linda Perry; sister, Joan Lash; and brother, Billy Grable.

ST. JOSEPH – Warren Eugene Stephens, 92 died, Thursday, November 6, 2014.
Born July 16, 1922 near Fairfax, Mo., and moved to St. Joseph, in June 1929.
He married the former Margie E. Todd on November 28, 1946 in St. Joseph. After attending Lafayette High School, he served in the army as a radio operator and relayed messages from the front lines back to headquarters.
Warren was at the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the “Battle of the Bulge” in Europe during World War II. He was employed by the St. Joseph Fire Department and retired as a Captain with over 36 years, on July 10, 1985.
He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons. Warren belonged to the Retired Fire Fighters Union Local 77. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge. He was formerly active in Cub Scout work. He and his wife moved to Fallbrook, Calif., near San Diego in April 1990.
Warren was preceded in death by his wife, Margie; his parents James E. and Mattie P. Stephens; four brothers; five sisters; and son, James Stephens.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathryn J. Eichstedt of Fallbrook; two grandchildren, Douglas and Kelly Lindsey (Robert Frost); four great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Kristina, Ashlee and Luke Lindsey; and several nieces and nephews.

HOPKINS, Mo. – Cynthia A. McElroy, 64, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at Village Care Center, Inc, Maryville, Mo.
Cynthia was born August 6, 1950, in Maryville.
A graduate of Burlington Junction High School, she had been an assistant manager at the Maryville Shop and Hop.
She married Richard Wayne McElroy, October 12, 1968 in Maryville. Cynthia was a member of the Burlington Junction American Legion Auxillary and West Nodaway Rescue Squad.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Richard McElroy, October 30, 1992.
Surviving Cynthia are her four daughters: Lisa Ann (Bradley) Keever, Maryville; Angel Renee (Thomas) Ross, Fruitland, Maryland; Toni
Michele Deffenbaugh, Hopkins,and Jami Marie (Shawn Irvine) McElroy, Burlington Junction; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter Raylee Rea.

Mary married Jerrol “Jerry” White on December 1,1962. He preceded her in death on September 18, 2005.
She worked at Steven’s Hats, Barbosa’s Mexican Restaurant, and was a salesclerk later in life.
Mrs. White was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; Pelen E.C. Barbosa and Merced Barbosa, and a sister; Lupe Cathcart.

ST. JOSEPH – Charles L. Mears, 91, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014 at his home.
He was born January 10, 1923 in St. Joseph, to O.C. and Mary (Finney) Mears.
Charles was a graduate of the Benton High School Class of 1941 in which he played for the team that went on to win the Basketball State Championship. Upon graduation, he became the market reporter for the News-Press and The Gazette. Later, he became the Livestock Market and Financial Editor until his retirement after 44 years.
In 1943 he served as a teletype operator for 25 months in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. His medium bomber squadron was the first aerial combat unit to go overseas after the declaration of war. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon.
Charles married Esther Rapp in Joplin, Mo., preceding his deployment. They were able to celebrate their 69th anniversary before her death in 2011.
Charles loved his church and was a faithful member of the King Hill Baptist congregation where he served as an usher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, O.C. and Mary Mears; wife, Esther Mears; two sisters, Irene Dittemore (Emery) and Mildred Noel (Frank); and two nephews, Tommy Noel and Billy Dittemore.
Charles is survived by a son, Charlie Mears (Marty); two grandchildren, Scott Mears (Adriana) and Shelly Mears; and five great- grandchildren, Melanie and Steven Mears, Mason and Max and Mia Scheidler.
Above all, Charles loved his family. He was a loving and supporting husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Family gatherings were extremely important to him. Up until his death, he actively attended and supported his great-grandchildren’s church, school, and sporting events. Many priceless memories have been created over the years. We will all miss him very much and will continue to keep him in our hearts forever.

He was born June 1, 1929 in St. Joseph, son of Gouelda and Clarence Sadler. He graduated from Benton high school (1947) and served in the United States Army. He worked at Lehr Construction for many years as a carpenter. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Barbara Sue (Wolf) Melvin, 78, formerly of Hopkins, Mo., passed away November 1, 2014 at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines.
She was born at home in Tarkio, Mo., on May 19, 1936, the daughter of Samuel Everett and Irma Susan (Young) Wolf. Barbara was a graduate of Hopkins High School and she married Billie Dean Melvin on June 14, 1953 in Hopkins.
Barbara had worked for the Royal Diaper Company and also as a waitress and a nurse’s aid.
She was a member of the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
Preceding her in death: her husband, Billie Dean Melvin, on April 7, 2013; a son, Roger Dean Melvin on May 5, 1987; and her parents.
Survivors include: her sons, Ron (Cindy) Melvin, Pleasant Hill, Iowa and Rob (Joy) Melvin, Algona, Iowa; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janette Wilson, Clarinda, Iowa; Martha Shackelford, and Wauneta (Guy) Edwards, both of Tucson, Ariz.; brother: Jim (Beverly) Wolf, Arlington, Va.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

MYSTIC, IOWA – Donald Ross Kelly, was born October 2, 1934 to John and Jennie (Johnson) Kelly. He passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Kauzlarich and Jeanette Coates; and seven brothers, Harold, Gerald, Junior, Ronald, Henry, James, and Andy.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth (Rhoades) Kelly, whom he married on August 30, 1959, at Lucerne Christian Church. He is also survived by his daughter, Lana Patterson (Kent) of Greenwood, Ind.; and his son, Scott Kelly (Lisa) of Overland Park, Kan.; and his five grandchildren, Blake, Logan, and Collin Patterson and John and Katie Kelly.
Don served in the United States Marine Corps from September 1954 through August 1957. He attended Centerville Iowa Junior College and Kirksville State Teachers College earning a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Education. He also attended the University of Missouri – Columbia earning a PhD in Educational Administration in 1970. Don served in education for 33 years as a teacher, counselor, and principal in Walnut, Iowa; as a high school principal in Clarinda, Iowa; as a supervisor in School Finance at the Missouri Department of Education in Jefferson City, Mo.; and as Associate Superintendent for Business Affairs with the St. Joseph School District from which he retired in 1995.
Don was a member of Central Christian Church in St. Joseph serving as a deacon and elder for many years. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, Mo., for 23 years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Central Christian College of the Bible, 911 East Urbandale Drive, Moberly, MO 65270.

ST. JOSEPH – Concepcion “Connie” Dolores Willoughby, 90, departed for heaven from her beloved home on Tuesday, October 28, 2014.
Connie was born on February 20, 1924 to John and Mildred (Gray) Alvarez in Elwood, Kan. She was a quiet and gentle soul who was a loving mother, sister and grandmother. Her wisdom and encouragement will be greatly missed.
Connie enjoyed puttering around the home, she loved spending time in her yard and at family gatherings. She was a talented seamstress sewing for her children and grandchildren as well as Stetson Hat Company for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son, Gerald; infant daughter, Mary Teresa; sister, Patricia McDowell; and brothers Raymond and John Alvarez.
Connie is survived by her children and their spouses; Sandy Turner (Al), Dr. Robert J. ST. JOSEPH – Norma Jean (Walker) Lindensmith Gallagher, 81, died Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at her home.
She was born February 13, 1933 to Chester and Alta (Walls) Walker in St. Joseph.
Norma was a 1950 graduate of Benton High School and she retired from Missouri Western State University after 25 years as personal secretary to the president of the college.
Norma was actively involved in the Pony Express Museum, the Runcie Club, Questers, Flower Society, Inklings Book Club, and her beloved CAJ Club of which she had been part of for over 60 years. She was also very proud to design the garden at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Jerry Lindensmith; son, Philip Lindensmith; and step-son, Mark Gallagher.
Survivors: her husband, Dan Gallagher of the home; son, Mark Lindensmith (Gaytha); brother, Donald Walker; step-children, Susie Kovac (Mark), Julie Gallagher, Kristi Nikes (Greg), Jeff Lawson (Roxie), and Lisa Gawatz (Danny); numerous grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

ST. JOSEPH – Marguart L. Cowart, 83, died Sunday, October 26, 2014 at a local healthcare facility.
She was born November 8, 1930 to Harvey and Perna (Bingaman) Shaw in St. Joseph.
Marguart married the love of her life Lyle R. Cowart on June 10, 1949.
She graduated from Benton High School, Class of 1949 and retired from American Family as a clerical supervisor.
Mrs. Cowart was a member of Hyde Valley United Methodist Church, Gamma Aletha, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and was on the Southside Fall Festival Committee. She also gave back to her community most notably during the flood of 1993 with the Salvation Army providing meals and transportation to the flood victims around Big Lake.
She also enjoyed fishing, spending time at Big Lake, traveling and going to craft shows.
Marguart was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Lyle; parents; great uncle and aunt who raised her, Albert and Verna Norton; and sisters, Betty Bennett and Maxine McLaughlin.
Survivors: daughter, Susan Edson (Ed); grandson, Scott Edson (Kelly); three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Becca and Jordan; brother, Harvey Shaw, Jr.; sister, Opal Polsgrove; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, “Baby Girl.”

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Henry Nicholas Mattson, 87, formerly of Conception Junction, Mo., died on Monday, October 27, 2014, at Golden Living Care Center, Maryville.
Nick was born May 16, 1927, the son of Ernest Edward Sr. and Catherine Barbara (Schieber) Mattson. He was a 1945 graduate of Conception High School. Later he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
On August 18, 1956, Nick married Elizabeth Colleen Schrader in Conception Junction.
In 1958, he graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville, and went on to receive his Masters of Education from NWMSU.
An educator and coach, Nick taught in the Jefferson C-123 School District for 31 years before his retirement. He was a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Community, Maryville; the Tri-C American Legion Post #464, Conception Junction, and Missouri Retired Teachers Association. Nick enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends and was a huge supporter of all his grandchildren’s activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Ed Mattson, John Mattson, Frances Worley and Alfreda Wilmes.
Nick is survived by his wife, Betty Mattson, of their home in Maryville; daughters, Pam (Dave) Gude, Harlan, Iowa; Mary Noel (Al) Meyer, Leawood, Kan.; Sheila Mercer (Philip Strawbridge), Lee’s Summit, Mo., Alison (Mike) Riley, Lee’s Summit; son, Tim (Susan) Mattson, Maryville; sister, Loretta Henry, Palm Desert, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
