KendallKatherineKatherine L. Kendall 75, of Las Vegas Nev. formerly of St. Joseph, passed away at her home Friday August 30, 2013. She was born July 7, 1938 in Rockport Mo. She graduated from Lafayette High School and then from Hillyard College with a degree in nursing. She worked at St. Joseph “Sisters” Hospital and Methodist Medical Center. Katherine and her daughter moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1978 where she continued her nursing career at Valley Hospital and as a private duty nurse until her retirement. Katherine’s speciality was geriatrics. She was a former member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in St. Joseph and a member of Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church. Katherine was preceded in death by parents Willy and Loretta McCarty. Three sisters, Maxine Ballard, Edna Mae Warner, Marianne Fleischman. She is survived by daughter Suzy Kendall-Brothers, Las Vegas Nv. Two brothers, Butch Bruce and Charles Warner of St. Joseph. Luis Juan Macias, 88, Maryville, Missouri, died Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Parkdale Manor, Maryville.

Luis was born March 8, 1925, in Matamzas, Cuba to Jose and Guillermina Lavin Macias.

Luis received a law degree from the University of Havana, Cuba and a doctorate in Spanish literature from the University of Madrid, Spain. He was a professor of foreign language at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville and Conception Abbey, Conception, Missouri.

Luis married his first wife, Ana Vida Banning, May 12, 1957, in Matamazas, Cuba. She preceded him in death February 5, 1989.

He married Ruth H. Hennegin June 7, 1993, in Savannah, Missouri. She survives at the home in Maryville.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Macias; 3 sons: Willie (Cindy) Macias, Pembroke Pines, Florida, Andy Macias, Maryville; John (Laura) Macias, Cape Coral, Florida, and daugher: Alicia (Ron) Davis, Kansas City, Missouri; 2 step-sons: Michael and Brett Carter, Terre Haute, Indiana; step-daughter: Stephanie Carter, Frisco, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Macias has been cremated. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Laverta Ethel Hawkins

Hawkins, Laverta croppedLaverta Ethel Hawkins, daughter of James Walter Gray and Ethel Swaim Gray was born on November 19, 1918 in Taylor County Iowa and passed from this life on November 15, 2013 at Parkdale Care Center in Maryville Missouri, four days before her 95th birthday.

She graduated from Hopkins High School in 1937 and married Frank Oren Riley on May 22, 1937 in Grant City, Missouri. To this union three sons were born: Maurice Dean, Larry Gene and Frank Walter Riley.

Her first husband Frank, was killed on March 26, 1943 in a truck accident in Oregon. Laverta returned to Hopkins, Missouri. On January 20, 1945 she married Milo Wilson. Together they operated the Wilson Supply Store and the Wilson Grocery Store in Hopkins, Missouri for many years. Milo passed away in January, 1975. She married James Hawkins in Mesa, Arizona on January 26, 1980. They enjoyed traveling, living in Arizona in the winter months and spending time with friends and relatives. Laverta was a fifty year member of the Order of Eastern Star and held several offices over the years. In addition, she was a Worthy Advisor for the Rainbow girls. She was a member of the Hopkins Christian Church.

Laverta was raised during the Great Depression and was the oldest of five daughters. She learned to work hard with her dad. She kept the same work ethic her entire life and instilled the same in her sons. Laverta faced many obstacles in her lifetime. She was widowed at the age of 24 with two young sons and expecting a third one. In 1975 she was again widowed and left with a business to run.

Those relatives who preceded Laverta in death were her parents, husbands: Frank Riley, Milo Wilson and Jim Hawkins, brother John Harvey Gray, sisters Irma Gill, Marcella O’Brien, Emily Arieta Gordon and Irene Schwindt, her brothers-in-law, step-daughter Linda (Hawkins) Villar, granddaughter Lisa (Riley) Willey and great-grandson Phillip Landess.

She leaves to cherish her memory sons Maurice (wife Donna) Riley, Hopkins, Missouri, Larry (wife Barbara) Riley, Greenfield, Iowa and Frank (wife Dianne) Riley, Osceola, Iowa, step-son Duane (wife Beverly) Wilson, Winnemucca, Nevada and cousin Theda Bennett, Sun City Center, Florida. In addition, she is survived by 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. She enjoyed spending time with her family. They were the love of her life.

Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 10:30 am at the Hopkins, Missouri First Christian Church.

Donald G. Miller, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri died Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 20, 1925 to Arthur and Ruth (Garland) Miller in Neola, Iowa.
Donald married Frances E. McNish, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Miller served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He worked as an engineer for the Missouri State Highway Department. Donald was an active member of Community Presbyterian Church and Gideons International. He volunteered at Humboldt School, Heartland as a chaplain volunteer, the Food Kitchen, and was also a former Scout Master.
He enjoyed travelling, especially family vacations as his family was his most cherished possession.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers, Kenneth and Richard Miller.
Survivors: daughter, Deborah (C. Michael) Hanlan; sons, Larry (Terri) and James B. (Karren) Miller; sister-in-law, Eva Jeanne Steffey; five grandchildren, Mikey, Michelle, Missy, David, and Mindy; nine great-grandchildren, Nick, Hayley, Dillon, Scott, Zach, Collin, Michaela, Brock, and Ashlyn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Russell Duane Barton, 77, Kansas City, Missouri went to be with his heavenly father on November 16, 2013, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Russell was born May 8, 1936 to Curly and Edith Barton in King City, Missouri.
Russell graduated from Maysville High School, where he lettered in football. He loved 4 wheeling and playing in the snow with his grandchildren.
He was an Elder in the RLDS Church, and loved nothing more than to pray for the sick and perform marriage ceremonies. He touched many lives during his time as a Christian, and during the last 5 years, he tried to share his story of Gods Miracle with someone every day. He leaves behind a legacy of caring, nurturing and mentoring many who were not his own children.
Russell was a very creative metal craftsman, owning and operating Accent In Iron (the best little iron shop in KC) for 33 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lois Steiner-Hutchcraft.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Helen Smith; daughters, Cathie Helsel (Scott), Carla Ruoff (Terry), and Kim Barton; grandchildren, Jason Osborn (Jen), Crissy Liggett (Chris), Corey Barton (Rita Morales), Adam Ruoff (Alena), Cody Ruoff (Brittany Shinneman) and Joey Helsel; and great-grandchildren, Tristyn Liggett, Jonas Osborn, Rylin Ruoff, and Jacoby Osborn.

Shirley Ann Shimer, 79, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 at a local hospital.

Shirley was born October 5, 1934 to Samuel and Leota (Edwards) Allen in Maryville, MO. She later moved to St. Joseph where she spent most of her life and attended Benton High School. On August 21, 1953 she married Dale Shimer in St. Joseph. Shirley was a member of King Hill Baptist Church. She was also an avid Kansas City Royals fan.

Preceding her in death is her parents; three brothers, Harry, Richard and Ralph Allen; great-grandson, Bret Dulcan and son –in-law, Forey Higdon.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Dale Shimer Sr.; son, Dale Jr. (Tiny) Shimer of St. Joseph; daughters, Pamela (Monte) Jamison, of St. Joseph and Barbara Higdon of Oregon, MO; Seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services under direction of Clark-Sampson Funeral Home will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Community Christian Church with interment following in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Clark-Sampson Funeral Home, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Norman Burton

He was born November 23, 1930 in Pattonsburg, Missouri son of Gladys & Kermit Burton. He married Carol Burton on July 2, 1964 and she survives of the home. He graduated from Pattonsburg High School, then served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict leaving this service in 1963. He was a Sheet Metal Worker, and a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching TV especially Perry Mason. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, two daughter, Denise Kerns, and Deborah Hulett, and his brother, Jack Burton. He is survived by wife, Carol Burton of the home, two daughters Darlene (John) Grieme of St. Joseph, MO, and Melody (Tom) Hutson of Pittsburg, MO, and two sons, Mark (Linda) Hulett of Gillman City, MO, and Jack Burton of Cameron, MO, 20, grandchildren, 43, great grandchildren, and 7, great great grandchildren, his sister in law, Rosalee Burton, and sister, Phyllis (Richard) Weber of Kansas City, MO. Johnnie “John” J. Porter of St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Maryville, MO passed away at home November 14, 2013. He was born August 9, 1920 in Parnell, MO, to John L. and Emma Porter. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ellen, and Beulah, and brother Donald. Johnnie was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother and known fondly as Porter to many. He was respected and appreciated by his family and friends. Johnnie is survived by, Edythe (Ecile) his wife of 66 years, daughters Carolyn Porter, Nancy (Mark) Thomas and sons, Johnnie Wayne (Shawna), Eugene, Donnie (Sandy), and Douglas. 10 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.

H. Fay Boner, 95, Lee’s Summit, Missouri died Thursday, November 14, 2013 at The Carlyle Retirement Community Center in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
She was born November 21, 1917 to Stanley and Rose (Grebe) Oliver in Montgomery City, Missouri.
She married Claude C. Boner on February 10, 1940. He preceded her in death on December 30, 2001.
Fay graduated from Kansas University with a Master’s of Science in Deaf Education. She retired from the North Kansas City School District in 1984 and was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Wards in 1985. She was a member of 1st Baptist Church in St. Joseph, Missouri, Missouri Teacher’s Association and POE.
Mrs. Boner was an avid reader who also enjoyed music, gardening, and loved traveling, especially to the Rocky Mountains.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Sterling Oliver, Nita Hildreth, Stanley Oliver, Jr., and Cecil Oliver.
Survivors: two daughters, Judy Ann Tuck (Rogers) and Nancy Lynn Gross (Gary); two grandsons, Jason Robert Tuck (Kimmie) and Jacob Randall Tuck (Jenny); seven great-grandchildren, Samantha Tuck, Dayton Tuck, Sheldon Tuck, Brant Tuck, Walker Tuck, Rolin Tuck, and Audrey Tuck; sister-in-law, Marjorie Nold Oliver Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
