Benedictine names Williams full-time wrestling coach

BC2Benedictine College Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer announced that the interim title will be removed from wrestling coach Thomas Williams and Coach Williams will take over the reigns of the wrestling program full time.

“Thomas was thrust into a difficult situation and has done an outstanding job of leading the program through this transition period,” said Gartenmayer. “His leadership of the program as the interim coach has proven to us that he has the necessary skills to lead the program as the head coach into the future.”

Coach Williams moved into the role of interim head coach shortly after the programs first tournament of the season after joining the Benedictine staff as a graduate assistant in the fall.

“I feel very lucky and blessed to be given this amazing opportunity,” Coach Williams said. “I would like to thank Charlie Gartenmayer and President Steven Minnis for granting me with this position. I have received so much support from the school and alumni since I became the interim coach.

“A lot of this year has been surreal. I only moved to Kansas in August to begin working as a grad assistant and my college career only ended in March of 2012.”

Coach Williams was a four-year starter at NCAA Div. I American University at the 125-pound weight class. During his career at American he was a two-time EIWA place winner and was also a two-time NCWA Academic All-America selection.

He is a native of San Dimas, Calif., where he was a three-time state placer and a state champion.

He gradated from American with two Bachelor degrees, one in International Service and the other in Business.

With the interim title removed, Coach Williams can now focus not just on the remainder of the current season but the future of the program.

“I believe that with the interim title removed it will make it far easier for me to recruit even more student athletes,” Coach Williams said. “Now the athletes I have been recruiting will know that there is stability and they know who will be coaching them next year for sure.

“I also look forward to searching for a great graduate assistant. I am excited to begin this search and have another person with me that can help guide our Benedictine College wrestling team towards success in the classroom and in competition.”

The inaugural season for the wrestling program is hitting the home stretch with just a few competitions remaining before Benedictine enters its first postseason opportunity.

With a road dual on Friday against NAIA member Bethany (Kan.) College and one final open tournament on Sunday in Marshall, Mo., at Missouri Valley College, the Ravens will then turn their attention to a postseason run.

The Ravens will compete in a NAIA Regional Tournament at Baker University in Baldwin City on Feb. 16.

Benedictine hires Pick-Cooper as next volleyball coach

BCThe Benedictine College Athletic Department and Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer have announced the hire of Erin Pick-Cooper to the head volleyball coaching position.

“We are pleased that Coach Cooper is joining our staff here at Benedictine,” said Gartenmayer. “She brings a wealth of experience at many levels of volleyball and we are excited to have her become part of the Benedictine community.”

Coach Cooper’s most recent stop was at defending Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Champion MNU in Olathe where she served as an assistant from 2010-11.

Prior to MNU she severed as an assistant coach at Mercer University in Macon, Ga.

The head coaching position at Benedictine will be her third head coaching job as she previously served as head coach at Dodge City Community College from 1999-2001 and Seminole State College from 2001-2007.

“I’m excited to become part of the Benedictine community,” said Coach Cooper. “A lot of the colleges that I’ve been at haven’t had the feel that Benedictine has. This really feels like it can be a home away from home for me.”

She built the volleyball program at Seminole from scratch, guiding it to a No. 9 ranking in just three years after inception of the program. She was named Coach of the Year in 2004 and guided Seminole to a NJCAA Region II championship in 2004 and a runner up finish in Region II in 2005 and 2006.

“I look forward to being able to work with an athlete for four years,” said Coach Cooper. “When I was coaching at the junior college level, I felt like I was just getting to see the greatness in a player and they moved on to play somewhere else.”

Coach Cooper will begin her duties as head coach on Feb. 1 and will hit the ground running, getting to know the current group of Raven volleyball players and beginning the recruiting process.

“I’m going to need to get know what we have first,” Coach Cooper said. “Then we’ll see what we still need.

“Having spent time with MNU, I’ve seen what it’s going to take to be at the top of the conference and a look forward to making that climb with Benedictine.”

Benedictine went 7-23 this past fall and 2-7 in the HAAC. They qualified for the HAAC Postseason Tournament but were knocked out by MNU in the quarterfinal round.

Benedictine women rally past Baker

The Raven women’s basketball team proved tonight they had the heart and skill to battle back from a double-digit deficit, as they defeated Baker University 61-58 in front of a loud home crowd.

Baker University (11-8, 4-3 HAAC) held a consistent lead throughout the majority of the game and were leading by as much as 11 points in the second half.

Guard Rosie Youngstrom (Jr., Fairway) brought the No. 17 Ravens (17-3, 7-1 HAAC) back to life when she turned back- to- back steals into uncontested layups, bringing the game within three, with under five minutes to go.

Guard Jackie Ziesel (So., St. Joseph, Mo) tied the game with a 3-point field goal with 2:46 left in the game. Ziesel later ensured the win for the Ravens, putting in another 3-point shot with 29 seconds left to play.

Guard Justice Payne led the Ravens with 12 points and went 3-8 from behind the 3-point line. Ziesel and post Liz Stinson (Sr., Stilwell) both had 10 points.

Baker outplayed Benedictine in the first half and had the upper hand under the basket with 19 offensive rebounds and 27 on the defensive glass.

“We got out-rebounded pretty hard, a lot of times they were ripping balls right out of our hands,” said Raven head coach Chad Folsom. “We’ve got to be stronger; we’ve got to be able to get those balls.”

In the end it was the defense and the big plays from several players that got the victory for the Ravens.

“We did a better job at attacking the basket second half,” said Folsom. “The press also did a good job; (it) didn’t allow them to set up, which allowed us an easier opportunity to defend. I thought Kelsey (Anselmi) made some great leads to get off that screen and find the post.”

Forward Erin Murphy (Sr., Olathe) led the Ravens with 9 rebounds.

Guard Alisha Fanshier scored 19 points for Baker, followed by guard Ericka Simpson with 12 points off the bench.

Forward Rece Huddlin recorded a game high of 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.
