Benedictine women fall at College of Saint Mary

The Benedictine College women’s basketball team took to the road on Tuesday night falling to the College of St. Mary 77-70 after CSM converted 22 of 31 from the free throw line in the second half.

Benedictine (5-3) led 38-35 at the half but couldn’t hold off St. Mary (7-1) as they scored 22 of their 42 second-half points from the charity stripe.

The Ravens converted 56.5 percent from the floor in the first half but were held to just 27 percent in the second half.

Benedictine was led by the double-double of center Teresa Zienkewicz (Sr., Wichita) who scored 20 and pulled in 10 rebounds.

St. Mary had two players scored a game-high 21 points in Kelsey Heese and Tiffany Anzalone.

Benedictine remains on the road Monday, traveling to Warrensburg, Mo., for an exhibition against the University of Central Missouri at 6 p.m.

Benedictine women defeat Bethel College

The Benedictine College Raven women’s basketball team earned their record over .500 with a 65-57 win over Bethel (Kan.) College on Tuesday night in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium on the Benedictine campus.

After shooting 28.9 percent in the first half, the Ravens used a 48.3 percent effort in the second half to extend a two-point halftime lead to a nine-point win.

The Ravens forced Bethel into 26 turnovers with led to 22 points.

Benedictine was paced the by 12 points of forward Erin Murphy (Jr, Olathe) and guard Kesley Anselmi (Jr., Olathe). Guard Kelsey Wolfe (Sr., DeKalb, Mo.) also finished in double figures with 11 points.

Bethel was led by the game-high 14 points of Jessica Muckenthaler who also pulled in a game-high 13 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Benedictine remains at home for pair of games on Friday and Saturday as they host their annual BC Classic. Benedictine plays the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the closes out the Classic at 3 p.m. Saturday against Kansas Wesleyan University.

Benedictine gets record setting win over Culver-Stockson

The NAIA No,. 16-ranked Benedictine (Kan.) College Ravens closed out the 2011 regular season on Saturday with a record breaking performance against Culver-Stockton College.

Benedictine (9-2, 7-2 HAAC) broke their record for points in a single game, had a running back tie a single-game record for touchdowns and broke the their single-season inteception record in a 69-10 win over Culver-Stockton College (1-9; 1-8 HAAC) in front of a Senior Day crowd at Larry Wilcox Stadium.

The Ravens previous single-game scoring record game in a 64-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan during the 1985 season.

Running back Cameron Fore rushed for five touchdowns, which ties him with for the single-game record with Benedictine Hall of Famer Don Brown, who scored his record agaisnt Central Methodist during the 1993 season.

The final record of single-season interceptions previous stood at 25 and with four on Saturday, the Ravens pushed their 2011 total to 26.

Benedictine women defeat William Woods in season opener

The Benedictine (Kan.) College women’s basketball team started their 2011-12 season off on the right foot on Friday night with an upset over NAIA Div. I preseason No. 23 William Woods in front of their home fans in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.

Benedictine (1-0) limited William Woods (1-1) to just 29.1 percent from the floor and forced 22 turnovers en route to a 58-40 win.

The Ravens converted on 41 percent from the floor and knocked in 50 percent from beyond the arc in the second half to turn a 30-17 halftime lead into a 18-point win.

Benedictine was led in scoring by center Theresa Zienkewicz with 19 points. The senior and Wichita, Kan., native went 6 of 10 from the floor and was the teams top free throw shooter, knocking in 5 of 7.

William Woods was led in scoring by Sharron Andrews and Blake French, who both scored 8 points.

The Ravens hit the road on Monday as they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on NAIA Div. II preseason No. 5 Briar Cliff University.

Benedictine men’s basketball signs Junior College post player

Raven head men’s basketball coach Ryan Moody announced this week the signing of TJ Stevens, a 6’7″, 230-pound post.

Stevens averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds per game for Coffeyville Community College head coach Jay Herkelman. TJ played in 34 games in 2010-11 and helped Coffeyville Community College finish the season 31-5 with a No. 5 ranking in the country in NJCAA.

Stevens was awarded the 2011 NJCAA National Tournament Charles Sesher Sportsmanship Award. Stevens played his high school basketball for Coach Ed Fritz at Blue Valley Northwest High School.

“TJ gives us a true post player both on offense and defense,” Moody said, “He has played for two excellent coaches and will give us maturity and toughness inside. We are excited to add TJ to the Benedictine College men’s basketball family.“

Stevens is the sixth recruit in new Benedictine College head coach Ryan Moody’s first recruiting class. He joins John Anaekwe from Lenexa, Brett Fisher from Overland Park, Jallen Messersmith from Blue Springs, Mo., Luke Norville from Council Bluffs, Iowa and Dean Tiwald from Omaha, Neb.

Benedictine Men’s Basketball Signs Five

New Benedictine College head men’s basketball coach Ryan Moody announced the addition of five new players to his 2011-12 roster on Friday. Combo guard John Anaekwe (St James Academy, Lenexa), Shooting Guard Brett Fisher (Blue Valley Northwest, Overland Park), Post Player Jallen Messersmith (Blue Springs High School, Blue Springs, Mo.), Combo Guard Luke Norville (Lewis Central High School, Council Bluffs, Iowa), and Wing Dean Tiwald (Mount Michael High School, Elkhorn, Neb.)

“These five young men are a great fit for our program and Benedictine College,” Moody said. “All five players come from winning high school programs and all five have excelled in the classroom. They bring talent, hard-nosed competitiveness and unselfish ‘team first’ attitudes. That is the culture we are creating in our locker room and we are excited to add them to the Benedictine College family.”

John Anaekwe (6-0) is an athletic combo guard who can play multiple positions. He helped lead his team to a 14-8 overall record his senior and averaged 17.1 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals per game. Anaekwe shot 48% from the field and 68% from the free throw line. He was selected Johnson County Sun – All Sun Boys Basketball Third Team, Shawnee Mission West Vikings Classic First Team and was selected to play in the 33rd Annual All-Star Basketball Classic in Hutchinson, Kan.  

Brett Fisher (6-0) is an outstanding shooter from the perimeter who can also attack the basket and defend. He helped lead his team to a second consecutive Kansas 6A Runner-up finish and a 23-2 overall record. Fisher averaged 15 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds per game while shooting 55% from the field, 53% from the 3pt line and 76% from the free throw line. Brett was selected the Kansas 6A All-State First Team, the Johnson County Sun – All Sun Boys Basketball First Team and the KC Metro Second Team. He was voted the East Kansas League MVP, and Johnson County Sun – All Sun Player of the Year. Fisher is also a McDonalds HS All American Nominee and was selected to play in the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game.

Jallen Messersmith (6-7) is a long athletic post player who can alter a game with his ability to block shots and attack the glass on both ends. Jallen averaged 12.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game. Messersmith was selected to the Suburban Big 6 All-Conference First Team and he was voted to the All-Tournament Team for the Carl Junction Tournament. Jallen set the Single Season Blocks Record at Blue Springs High School and was voted MVP, Mr. Hustle, Mr. Defense and Mr. Basketball at Blue Springs High School.

Luke Norville (6-2) is a strong and athletic combo guard. He has great vision and leadership and brings the ability to attack off the dribble and shoot from the perimeter. Norville helped lead his team to a 15-8 overall record and a 48-19 record as a starter the last three years at Lewis-Central. He averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. He scored 980 total points in his career. Luke was named the Hawkeye 10 All-Conference First Team, the Council Bluffs Iowa All-City First Team, the Omaha World Herald All-Western Iowa Team, and the Iowa Basketball Coaches All-Star Team.

Dean Tiwald (6-4) is a multiple position wing who has the strength and athleticism to score and defend inside and the ability to shoot and attack from the perimeter. Dean helped lead his team to a 15-8 record while averaging 18.6 points per game. Dean was named to the Nebraska Class B All-State Second Team, the Omaha World Herald All-Omaha Second Team and the Centennial All-Conference First Team.
