LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas sophomore forward Silvio De Sousa will not participate in the Jayhawks’ exhibition game Thursday night vs. Emporia State and will be withheld from competition pending the outcome of an eligibility review.

“Information was presented during the current trial in New York – some of which we knew, some of which we didn’t,” said KU basketball coach Bill Self. “We have decided to withhold Silvio from competition until we can evaluate and understand the new information. We have already discussed trial developments with the NCAA and will continue to work with NCAA staff moving forward.”

De Sousa averaged 4 points and 3.7 rebounds in 20 games as a freshman last season. He joined KU in December 2017 after graduating in three-and-a-half years from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas redshirt junior Dedric Lawson has been named to the Associated Press (AP) 2018-19 preseason All-America team, as voted on by a 65-member national media panel, the AP announced Tuesday.

Joining Lawson on the AP preseason All-America team are: Carsen Edwards (Purdue), Luke Maye (North Carolina), R.J. Barrett (Duke), Ethan Happ (Wisconsin) and Caleb Martin (Nevada). There were also 15 other student-athletes who received votes.

Named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and Preseason All-Big 12 First Team earlier this month, Lawson sat out last season after transferring from Memphis. The Memphis, Tennessee, forward averaged 19.2 points and 9.9 rebounds, amassing 19 double-doubles his sophomore year for the Tigers in 2016-17, earning All-American Athletic Conference First Team honors. As a freshman, Lawson averaged 15.8 points and 9.3 rebounds with 17 double-doubles for Memphis.

Ranked No. 1 in the AP preseason poll released Oct. 22, Kansas will open exhibition play when it hosts Emporia State on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., in Allen Fieldhouse.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Alan Bowman threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns while playing for the first time since suffering a partially collapsed lung three weeks ago, and Texas Tech beat Kansas 48-16 on Saturday.

“Looked like he never even had an injury,” receiver Antoine Wesley said.

Bowman completed 36 of 47 passes while showing accuracy on short and deep passes, with only one interception. The true freshman was the nation’s leading passer when he got crushed between two West Virginia defenders in Texas Tech’s last home game Sept. 29, and was released from the hospital four days later.

“It’s been a while. We just wanted to make sure practice went well. Didn’t want any setbacks,” coach Kliff Kingsbury said. “We felt confident … a few days after he got out of the hospital that he’d be ready for this date. We just wanted to make sure he held up, felt good. His breathing was fine.”

After coming out early in that loss to West Virginia, Bowman missed only one game. Jett Duffey started a 17-14 win at TCU. On his only drive in the fourth quarter Saturday, Duffey completed all three of his passes for 33 yards before DeMarcus Felton’s 34-yard TD run for a 48-9 lead.

Wesley, who entered the game third nationally with 117 yards receiving a game, had nine catches for 155 yards and a nifty one-handed grab for a 6-yard touchdown. T.J. Vasher and Seth Collins also had TD catches for the Red Raiders (5-2, 3-1 Big 12), who had 553 total yards despite three turnovers.

Kansas (2-5, 0-4) lost its 43rd consecutive true Big 12 road game, dating back to a 35-33 win at Iowa State on Oct. 4, 2008.

But the Jayhawks weren’t surprised to see Bowman in the game, no matter how coy Kingsbury had been about who would be his starting quarterback.

“Our defensive game plan was all around Bowman,” senior linebacker Joe Dineen Jr. said. “Our coaches knew that he was going to be able to go this week, so we really prepared for him.”

The Jayhawks played their first game since offensive coordinator Doug Meacham was fired. Peyton Bender threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns while freshman Pooka Williams had 16 carries for 70 yards to finish 38 yards below his rushing average that was second-best in the Big 12.

“We’re disappointed because we didn’t do enough to help us win,” coach David Beaty said of the overall offensive output. “We had a firm understanding of what we were doing. I think everybody felt comfortable there. They were engaged the entire time.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks have lost all four of their Big 12 games after finishing their nonconference schedule with consecutive victories games for the first time since 2009.

Texas Tech: Coach Kliff Kingsbury is back to .500 as coach of his alma mater — at 35-35 overall in his sixth season. The former Red Raiders quarterback was 7-0 in his coaching debut in 2013, and is 28-35 since. Tech is one win shy of bowl eligibility, a mark it didn’t reach until the regular-season finale last year.

The Red Raiders has held consecutive conference opponents under 20 points for the first time since 2013, and had three sacks against the Jayhawks. Senior linebacker Kolin Hill had his first two sacks of the season.

“Especially when I first got here, we weren’t known for defense at all,” Hill said. “That’s definitely something that we stress. Things have changed for us defensively.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football will host five Big 12 Conference foes and hit the road for four conference contests in 2019, according to the schedule announced Thursday by the Big 12 Conference.

KU will host West Virginia (Sept. 21) to open Big 12 play. They will also welcome Oklahoma (Oct. 5), Texas Tech (Oct. 26) and Dillons Sunflower Showdown rival Kansas State (Nov. 2) to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Kansas will close the 2019 regular season with a home game against Baylor (Nov. 30).

The Jayhawks will travel to TCU (Sept. 28), Texas (Oct. 19), Oklahoma State (Nov. 16) and Iowa State (Nov. 23).

The 2019 Big 12 slate features a 10-team, nine-game, round-robin schedule for the ninth-straight season. It marks the third year each team will play nine conference games with a championship game implemented. The top two finishers in the regular season standings will compete for the Conference title in the Big 12 Football Championship Game, which is scheduled in 2019 for Saturday, December 7. The championship game will be played in Arlington, Texas’ AT&T Stadium through 2021.

Dates are subject to change as adjustments are expected to accommodate television partners’ requests.

The Jayhawks’ 2019 season begins with three non-conference games, starting with a Labor Day Saturday game (Aug. 31) against Indiana State. The following Saturday, Sept. 7, Kansas hosts Coastal Carolina, followed by a Sept. 14 trip to Boston College, the Jayhawks’ first-ever game against the Eagles.

Decisions regarding television and game times for the first three weeks of the season and special dates will be announced in June.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Kansas freshman Quentin Grimes has been named one of 20 candidates for the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.

Named after Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor, in its fifth year, recognizes the top shooting guard in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Grimes is a five-star combo guard who made his rounds on the all-star game circuit following his senior year at College Park High School in The Woodlands, Texas. Ranked No. 8 in the national recruiting services, he averaged 29.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists his senior season, earning the 2017-18 Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, Texas Mr. Basketball and the 6A Player of the Year. This past summer, Grimes was the Most Valuable Player and an All-Tournament selection at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championships in leading USA to the gold medal, where he averaged 14.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed down to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2019 Jerry West Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles on Friday, April 12, 2019.

Jerry West attended West Virginia University and averaged 24.8 points and 13.3 rebounds per game in his three varsity seasons. He led his team to the NCAA Championship game in 1959 and was named a consensus All-American in 1959 and 1960. In the summer of 1960, he was co-captain of the U.S. men’s basketball team and won an Olympic gold medal. As a professional player, West played 14 seasons in the NBA with the Lakers making the All-NBA First Team 10 times. West won an NBA championship in 1972 and was named the NBA Finals MVP in 1969 despite his team not winning the championship. In 1996, he was named a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Kansas freshman Devon Dotson has been named one of 20 collegiate players to the preseason watch list for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday.

Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor, now in its 16th year, recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. Dotson is vying to become the second Jayhawk in the last three seasons to win the award as Frank Mason III was KU’s first-ever Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award winner in 2017.

One of five McDonald’s All-Americans on the KU’s 2018-19 roster, Dotson is an explosive combo guard who picked up numerous postseason honors and played in multiple all-star games following the 2017-18 season. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native ended ranked No. 20 by Rivals.com, No. 21 by 247Sports.com and No. 24 by ESPN100. A three-time all-state selection at Providence Day School, Dotson averaged 28.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists his senior year.

In 1996, he was named a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.
