Missouri State’s Lambert named Valley Offensive Player of the Week

riggertMSUST. LOUIS – After turning in a career day to help Missouri State rally for a key conference win over Southern Illinois Saturday, senior quarterback Brodie Lambert has been named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.

Lambert completed 25-of-39 passes and posted career highs for total offense (390), passing yards (339) and rushing yards (51), while tossing four touchdown passes to lead MSU to a 38-35 comeback win over the Salukis. Lambert threw for three TDs in the second half and guided an offense that racked up 516 yards of total offense in helping the Bears rally from a 14-point deficit.

The Arlington, Texas native ignited the MSU comeback by ripping off a career-long 46-yard rush to set up the first of his three second-half TDs, then tied the game with a 36-yard scoring strike to Zac Hoover with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. Lambert’s 390 yards of offense represent the sixth-best single-game total in school history, and his 76-yard first-quarter TD pass to Hoover is the Bears’ longest under head coach Dave Steckel.

With the first Valley player of the week honor of his career, Lambert joins fellow Bears Sam Ellifrits (Offensive Lineman of the Week—Oct. 2), Dylan Cole (Defensive Player of the Week—Oct. 2) and Deion Holliman (Special Teams Player of the Week—Sept. 4) as MVFC weekly award winners this season.

Up next, the Bears (4-4, 2-3 MVFC) travel to Brookings, S.D., next Saturday (Nov. 5) for a 2 p.m. match-up with South Dakota State at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

Missouri State picked fourth in preseason MVC men’s basketball poll

riggertMSUST. LOUIS – Missouri State’s men’s basketball team was picked fourth, and last year’s conference Newcomer of the Year Dequon Miller was named to the Preseason All-MVC second team today, the Missouri Valley Conference announced early Tuesday at its annual Basketball Tip-Off event.

The Bears, who return four starters and 70 percent of their scoring from last season, were tabbed to finish among the MVC’s top four teams for the third time in five seasons. A preseason poll of league coaches, media representatives and athletics communications staffs has the Bears behind just preseason league favorite Wichita State (413 points), Illinois State (356) and Northern Iowa (348) among The Valley’s 10 teams.

Rounding out the poll are Southern Illinois (228), Indiana State (219), Loyola (179), Bradley (110), Evansville (106) and Drake (73). Wichita State collected 37 of a possible 42 first-place votes with Illinois State (4) and UNI (1) collecting the other five.

“You have to earn it each and every day in this league, no matter where you’re picked,” said Bears’ head coach Paul Lusk. “No matter where you’re picked, everyone’s goal is to win the conference title, and that’s what we strive to do every day in our program.”

Miller is one of 10 players to be named to the MVC Preseason All-Conference Team. First-team selections include Wichita State’s Markis McDuffie, Illinois State’s duo of MiKyle McIntosh and Paris Lee, Indiana State’s Brenton Scott and UNI’s Jeremy Morgan. Morgan was also named the MVC Preseason Player of the Year.

Joining MSU’s starting point guard on the second team are Loyola standout Milton Doyle, WSU’s Shaq Morris, SIU’s Sean O’Brien and Drake’s Reed Timmer.

Miller became just the fifth Bear to receive MVC Newcomer of the Year honors. He was also an honorable mention All-MVC selection during his first season in Springfield and led the Bears in scoring (12.7 points per game), 3-point shooting (57), assists (96) and minutes played (1,110). He ranked among the Valley’s top 10 leaders in all four categories, was the league’s seventh-best scorer (13.4) in conference games and was one of the nation’s top 100 performers in minutes played per game (34.7). He is the No. 3 returning scorer in the MVC this season.

“Dequon is more concerned about winning than any individual accolades,” Lusk said. “But there’s no doubt he has improved since last season, and we look for him to have a great senior season.”

Missouri State’s preseason poll ranking is its best since being tabbed third in 2014-15. The Bears were also picked fourth in 2013-14 under Lusk who enters his sixth season at the helm of the MSU program.

The Bears open the 2016-17 campaign with an exhibition game against Missouri Baptist on Saturday, Nov. 5 at JQH Arena.

Missouri State keeps suspension of QB Breck Ruddick in effect for remainder of season

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD – Missouri State University head football coach Dave Steckel announced at a news conference late Monday (Oct. 17) that the suspension of quarterback Breck Ruddick will remain in effect for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Steckel suspended Ruddick and removed him from all team activities after allegations of animal cruelty were brought to light on Sept. 23.

Steckel’s announcement Monday came after an independent University investigation into the matter was completed. According to Steckel, he has also imposed the following conditions for Ruddick’s return to the program next year should he choose to remain at Missouri State:

– Pay full restitution to the victim for veterinary charges and damages to her pet

– Apologize to the team and the University for the embarrassment, pain and the distraction the incident has caused

– Fulfill any municipal and/or legal obligations from the citations issued by Greene County Animal Control

– Comply with any disciplinary action taken by the Office of Student Conduct, which is handled separately and privately between the University and student.

The Missouri State Office of Student Conduct is also reviewing the Ruddick case and will determine its disciplinary actions separately.

“The University and I considered the charges to be serious,” Steckel said. “His admitted actions violate the MSU Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and the Missouri State Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

“Our players, our coaches and our staff are focused on playing out our season and representing this university in a positive fashion, as we do every time we take the field. Finding resolution in this matter will help that process and provide closure for all parties to move forward.”

Brodie Lambert, who has been the team’s starting quarterback since week three, is expected to remain Missouri State’s starter for the remainder of the season. The Bears (3-3, 1-2 MVFC) have five games remaining on this’s season slate, including Saturday’s 1 p.m. (CT) conference game at Northern Iowa.

Missouri State crushes NAIA opponent Southwestern 57-0 in first game

riggertMSUSPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State christened the 2016 football season in grand fashion, dominating Southwestern College in all phases of the game in a 57-0 victory Thursday evening at Robert W. Plaster Stadium. Led by a career night from Colby Isbell, the Bears defense stifled the Moundbuilders’ attack to finish the first shutout of the Dave Steckel era.

Isbell matched a career high with 7.0 tackles, while recording 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in the opening half to help stake Missouri State (1-0) to a commanding lead, before the Bears offense put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Overall, the Bears held SC to 116 yards of total offense in 66 plays (1.76 yards per play), recorded 4.0 sacks and 11.0 total tackles for losses totaling 48 yards to help post MSU’s largest margin of victory in nearly a quarter century.

The MSU offense helped spur an early charge that saw the Bears take a 21-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest and racked up 462 yards of total offense on the night. Sophomore quarterback Breck Ruddick completed 13-of-15 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 37 yards on just four carries.

Sophomore Nick Masoner led a potent MSU ground attack that piled up 321 rushing yards on 52 carries, finishing his night with a game and career-high 132 yards on 13 carries.

The runaway victory before a crowd of 8,827 represented the largest final margin in a Bears’ win since Sept. 21, 1991, when MSU routed Prairie View A&M by a 61-0 score at Plaster Stadium.

Deion Holliman, a preseason All-MVFC pick and the nation’s leading combined kick returner last fall, turned in a big night as well. The junior recorded 173 all-purpose yards, including 129 on his two kickoff returns, and hauled in the second touchdown reception of his Missouri State career. Holliman sparked the Bears’ early outburst by returning the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead, just 12 seconds into the new season. He would add to the MSU advantage on the Bears next possession by reaching high to grab a nine-yard scoring strike from Ruddick, who went 5-of-5 for 42 yards on the 73-yard drive.

MSU took advantage of a short field to add to its lead, as an 18-yard SC punt set up the Bears at the 28-yard line. Three plays later, Jason Randall bulled his way into the end zone for a seven-yard scoring run to stretch the margin to 21-0 with 5:00 to play in the opening quarter.

The Missouri State defense left an early impression on the Moundbuilders (0-1) as well, limiting the visitors to just 10 offensive yards in the opening period. After allowing 23 yards on Southwestern’s opening drive, the Bears put the clamps on the opposition, thanks in large part to a series of stops on key third down plays. Isbell came up with third-down sacks on back-to-back possessions, and recorded all 5.5 of his tackles for loss before the break, ultimately coming up just a half tackle short of Dylan Cole’s MSU single-game record.

MSU held the ‘Builders to just one first down in the period and did not allow a third or fourth down conversion until late in the second quarter.

Redshirt freshman kicker Zach Drake tacked on his fourth successful boot of the first half by drilling a 19-yard field goal that made it a 24-point MSU lead with 10:39 left on the clock. Ruddick, who completed 9-of-11 passes for 69 yards in the opening half, connected twice with freshman Aaron Denson for a total of 20 yards, as well as with Calan Crowder on an eight-yard play to set up the kick.

In all, the Bears allowed just 62 yards on the ‘Builders’ 38 first-half offensive plays.

Another strong start in the second half all but sealed the outcome, with the Bears out-scoring their guests by a 19-0 margin to top the 40-point mark for the first time in their last 26 games dating back to November 2013. Randall, who totaled 67 rushing yards on nine carries, spearheaded an eight-play, 87-yard drive that ended with his second TD run of the night after the sophomore turned in three different runs of 10 yards or more. Ruddick hit on all four of his pass attempts for 60 yards, including back-to-back completions of 23 and 19 yards to Erik Furmanek and Malik Earl, respectively.

The Bears’ defense once again stood tall, as McNeece Egbim picked off a Braden Langston pass and returned it for what appeared to be a 32-yard touchdown. An illegal block wiped out the score, but Phoenix Johnson negated the penalty on the initial play of the drive with a 21-yard scamper that gave the home club a 38-0 lead.

After stopping the ‘Builders deep in their own territory, an errant snap on a punt attempt sailed through the end zone for a safety. Holliman’s 38-yard return of the ensuing kickoff set up another MSU scoring chance, as  Masoner and Johnson teamed up to total 39 rushing yards on six carries to set up a 24-yard Shelby Harris field goal.

MSU would tack on a one-yard Gerard Harker run in the fourth, before Robert Thomas intercepted a Ka’Darius Baker pass and returned it 23 yards for the game’s final tally.

Missouri State embarks on its first road swing of the season next Saturday (Sept. 10) when it takes on Murray State in a 6 p.m. non-conference contest at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.

Tigers rout Missouri State 17-9 in series finale

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball (21-21) topped Missouri State (28-11), 17-9, on Tuesday night (April 26) thanks to a pair of two-run bombs over the left field wall by Shane Benes (Town and Country, Mo.) and Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.).  It was a team effort on offense as all nine Missouri players recorded a hit in the game, including six players with at least two hits, as Mizzou scored a season-high 17 runs.

RHP Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.) took the ball for Mizzou for his second start of the season and earned his third win of the season. Bartlett kicked off a strong showing on the mound, retiring the first seven batters face and limiting Missouri State to just two hits, one run and one walk through five innings pitched. He finished the night with a career-high four strikeouts.

Lavy led the Mizzou offense with three hits and six RBI, the most for a Tiger since Eric Garcia on March 20, 2010, against Purdue. He also finished a triple shy of the cycle. Benes added three hits and five RBI of his own, including a two-run homer, good for his fifth home run this season. Marquise Doherty (Kansas City, Mo.) and Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) each contributed to the offensive effort with two hits apiece, Doherty with his first career multi-RBI game.

A pair of walks by Missouri State put two runners on base early in the second for Mizzou. Doherty capitalized with a RBI single to the right side, the second of his career.  Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) followed up with a line shot to right, scoring Ian Nelson (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) and Doherty and giving Mizzou the 3-0 lead to end the second.

Lavy continued the offensive dominance for Missouri in the third with a rip to right field for a RBI double, tallying his 17th on the season. Benes followed up with a grounder to left center, scoring Lavy. Doherty recorded his second hit of the game with a liner to center putting Missouri up, 6-0.

A solo home run by Spencer Johnson in the fourth put Missouri State on the board but Mizzou responded with an explosive bottom half-inning. Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) and Howard rounded up a pair of singles to kick off the fourth inning and Lavy knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field. A Harris single up the middle set Benes up for a two-run blast over the bullpen, putting Mizzou ahead 10-1.

Missouri State threatened in the sixth with a four-run rally after a triple to right field by Steinmetz got the ball rolling. Jake Burger, Justin Paulsen and Jeremy Eierman all tallied RBI singles to bring MSU to within five. Mizzou answered with three runs in the sixth inning off a hard hit single by Benes and two in the seventh inning after a two-run shot by Lavy.

Paulsen tallied the fifth home run of the game with a two-run ball over the left center wall. Missouri State closed out the game with a three-run ninth inning but could not match Mizzou’s offensive production.

Mizzou begins a three game series with Tennessee on Friday at Taylor Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
