Missouri Western soccer falls at Lindenwood 1-0

riggertMissouriWesternST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Missouri Western women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Lindenwood.

The Lions were able to score the lone goal of the game when Autumn Ohlendorff earned her first score of the season. The goal came on a long pass by Miranda Huebner that was kicked in near the goal by Ohlendorff.

The Griffons were able to outshoot their opponent but could not find the back of the net. MWSU tallied nine shots while the Lions only recorded six. Sydney Andrews was the Griffons offensive threat as she produced three of the four team shots on goal while Layne Shepherd tallied the other one shot on goal.

Goalie Sarah Lyle recorded two saves for Missouri Western.

The Griffons will head north to Northwest Missouri State for their final regular season road game on Friday, October 25th at 2 p.m.

Griffons drop second in-a-row as they lose at No. 19 Emporia State

MWSUEMPORIA, Kan. – An outstanding effort by the Missouri Western defense went unrewarded as the Griffons narrowly avoided being shut out for the first time in five years in a 17-3 loss at No. 19 Emporia State Saturday inside Welch Stadium.

Western’s defense forced four Emporia State turnovers and held the Hornets 70 yards under their season average for total yards and 21 points under their season average. Ten of Emporia State’s points came off of Missouri Western’s two second half turnovers. Trailing 7-0 late in the third quarter, Raphael Spencer fumbled at the Missouri Western 36 yard line, setting up a 29-yard touchdown pass from Brent Wilson to Mitchell Foote with 14:52 left in the game. Nate Wilson’s only interception of the game set up a 27-yard field goal by Austin Morton with 12:51 left in the game.

Emporia State came into the game averaging 38 points per game and had seven at the end of the third quarter. The Griffons picked off the MIAA’s top-passer, Brent Wilson three times and forced a Wilson fumble in the third quarter on Missouri Western’s third sack of the game. The Missouri Western offense couldn’t find a way to back up the defensive effort, totaling 255 yards on 69 plays. Nate Wilson finished 13-33 passing for 55 yards and one interception in his first career start.

The Griffons rushed 36 times for 113 yards. Raphael Spencer finished with 40 yards on 12 carries after sitting out the first half for a violation of team rules. Josh Caldwell led the Griffons with 12 carries for 50 yards and Kendall Short rushed seven times for 23 yards. Tanner Pettet missed three field goals but did keep the Griffons from being shut out with a 19-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the game.

Yomi Alli continued an impressive stretch. The senior linebacker had 14 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. In the last three games, Alli has totaled 46 tackles in the last there games. Tyrell Robison finished with 10 tackles in the game and Cody Lindsay had two sacks. Jonathan Owens had two interceptions and Arbanas Elliott had his second career interception.

The loss dropped Missouri Western to 4-4 this season.  They return home next Saturday as they host No.3 Northwest Missouri State at 1:00 p.m.

Missouri Western volleyball team dominates SBU in three sets

riggertMissouriWesternBOLIVAR, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team picked up its second straight sweep of the weekend, dispatching Southwest Baptist in three sets Saturday.

Missouri Western won sets one and two 25-16 then held on for a 25-22 win in the third set to improve to 17-5 on the season and 9-2 in MIAA play. The Griffons hit .347 as a team and didn’t allow SBU a service ace or block in the match.

Jessie Thorup led the Griffons individually with 14 kills. Blair Russell had nine kills and hit .474 for the match. Lindsey Partridge had eight kills and a .571 hitting percentage and Rachel Friedrichs also had eight kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Partridge and Thorup each added three blocks and Jordan Chohon had two blocks to go with her 37 assists. Kayla Ruff led the team with 18 digs. Chohon had 11 digs and Amanda Dalbey had 15.

Missouri Western plays the last match of five-straight on the road Tuesday when they step out of MIAA play and travel to Truman State.

Western volleyball sweeps Missouri Soutern in Joplin

riggertMissouriWesternJOPLIN, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team took advantage of 26 Missouri Southern attack errors to claim its 16th win of the season, 3-0.

The Griffons had little trouble dispatching Missouri Southern in the first set, winning 25-16 and getting four kills in the set from Jessie Thorup. The senior outside hitter didn’t add much more to her total from there. Thorup and Jordan Chohon led the Griffons with seven kills each. The Griffons didn’t need a lot from Thorup or her colleagues as Missouri Southern was held to a .082 hitting percentage on the night.

Kayla Ruff led the Griffons with 10 kills. Shellby Taylor had a team-high four blocks and Chohon added 27 assists. The win improved Missouri Western to 16-5 on the season and 8-2 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern dropped to 2-19 overall and 1-9 in the MIAA. The Griffons continue their road trip with a trip to Boliavar to take on Southwest Baptist Saturday.

MWSU soccer loses 3-0 at No. 10 Central Missouri

riggertMissouriWesternWARRENSBURG, Mo. – For the first time this season the Missouri Western soccer team surrendered more than one goal. No. 10 Central Missouri scored one in the first period and two in the second to defeat Missouri Western 3-0 in a non-conference match between the MIAA foes.

Nicole Pond gave the Jennies a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, getting past Sarah Lyle for the shot and goal. Lyle was able to hold Central Missouri scoreless for the rest of the period and finished the match with three saves. UCM added its second goal early in the second period, getting a goal from Baylie Edwards in the 47th minute. Jada Scott gave the Jennies the 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes later.

Central Missouri had 13 shots to Missouri Western’s four. Only one of the Griffons’ shots was on goal with six for Missouri Western. The Griffons dropped to 8-5-1 after the loss. UCM is 13-2. Missouri Western stays on the road this weekend with a trip to Lindenwood on Sunday. The Griffons defeated the Lions 2-1 in St. Joseph on Sept. 20. Missouri Western and Central Missouri will square off again in a little over a week when UCM visits St. Joseph on Nov. 1.

Western picked fifth in preseason MIAA women’s basketball poll

riggertMissouriWesternKANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western women’s basketball team has been picked fifth in the preseason MIAA coaches poll.

Last season, Rob Edmisson’s team went 15-12 overall and 9-10 in the MIAA, finishing seventh and advancing to the second round of the MIAA Tournament before losing to Emporia State. This year’s team features four returning starters, including leading scorer and first team All-MIAA guard LaQuinta Jefferson. In her junior season, Jefferson averaged 20.2 points per game on 49% field goal shooting. 2014-15 honorable mention All-MIAA pick Sarafina Handy is also back this year after averaging 13 points per game and leading the Griffons with 42 percent three-point shooting. Last year’s leading rebounder, Tiara Hall played out her eligibility, but Mhykeah Baez was just 13 rebound behind Hall and returns for 2015-16.

Edmisson begins his fourth season at MWSU on Nov. 13 when the team travels to Marshall, Minnesota for the Southwest Minnesota State University Applebee’s Classic. After the opening weekend in Minnesota, it’s back home for three-straight, including two games in the MWSU Holiday Inn Express Classic. The Griffons make their home debut on Nov. 19 against Minnesota State-Mankato.

Griffons tied for 9th in MIAA men’s basketball preseason poll; Northwest picked to win the league

riggertMIAAKANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western men’s basketball team has been picked to finish in a tie for ninth place in the preseason MIAA coaches poll. The Griffons finished 10th last season, going 12-15 overall and 8-11 in the MIAA.

The Griffons lost two starters to graduation, including leading scorer Cortrez Colbert but return six letter winners from the 2014-15 team.

Kevin Thomas leads a group of three returning starters. Thomas’ 8.6 points per game were second on the team last season and he led MWSU with a 6.2 rebound per game average and 17 blocks. Cole Clearman’s 49 made three-pointers led the team. He returns after averaging 7.9 points per game last year. Other returning starters include Currie Byrd and Aaron Emmanuel. Emmanuel’s 81 assists led the team and Byrd was fourth on the team with six points per game.

Missouri Western will open the 2015-16 season on November 6th with an exhibition game at Missouri. The Griffons then play four-straight regular season games at home, beginning with the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic November 13th and 14th.

Griffon women’s golf team finishes 2nd at Lindenwood Fall Invite

riggertMissouriWesternST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Missouri Western women’s golf team finished in second place at the Lindenwood Fall Invitational on Tuesday. They finished the tournament at Whitmoor Country Club with a score of 628 in the two round event.

The Griffons had three individuals finish in the top-5 of the tournament. Celine Lim finished in third place with a score of 154 while freshman Shi Quing Ong finished fourth in the tournament, scoring a 155. Madison Romjue finished fifth with a total score of 156, including a low-round of 73 on day two. Missouri Western’s Jenna Kosmatka and Callie Wilson each finished their tournament with a score of 168 and 169, respectively.

Missouri Western finished seven strokes behind Lindenwood for first place and beat Arkansas-Montiicello by 24 strokes for second place.

The individual winner was Madelyn Piccininni from Lindenwood as she scored a 150 in her two rounds.

This is the Griffons final round of golf for the fall season and will return to action in the spring.

Western men’s golfers wrap up fall season in Alabama

riggertMissouriWesternKILLEN, Ala. – The Missouri Western men’s golf team finished the final round of the TVA Credit Union Invite with a final score of 948 over the two day tournament as they finished 15th overall. The tournament was held at the Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club.

Missouri Western was led by Jakob Rudosky with a score of 233 in three rounds of golf. He tallied a 76, 77, and 80, respectively. Ryan Hand finished the tournament firing a 234 with a low-round of 73 on day two. Corey Knight and Drew Lagan scored 240 and 241 respectively for the Griffons.

The tournament was won by Limestone College as they reported a team score of 877 in the two day event. They beat North Alabama by two strokes who finished in second place and Delta State by five strokes who finished third.

Griffin Brown of Limestone College was the individual winner as he scored a 210 through his three rounds of golf.

This is the final round of golf for Missouri Western this fall and they’ll return to action in the spring. Make sure to check back at gogriffons.com for schedule updates.

MWSU’s Lyle named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week

MWSUST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western soccer’s Sarah Lyle has been named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week. The junior blanked Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State over the weekend to help her team move up three spots in the MIAA standings.

Lyle totaled 11 saves over two matches, She also made two crucial saves against Fort Hays State in the final five minutes to keep the clean sheet. Lyle now has a goal average of .60 and her three shutouts this season have vaulted her to first all-time in that category with 13.1. A second team All-MIAA selection last season, Lyle was also named MIAA Goalkeeper of the week on Oct. 7, 2014.

The 5-7 junior goalkeeper is a native of Duluth, Minn. where she competed at Duluth East High School
