Western soccer gets blanked 2-0 by Central Missouri

On a night where Griffon soccer senior Abby Widrig was honored for becoming Missouri Western’s all-time leading scorer, it was Central Missouri that did all the scoring.

The Jennies go first-half goals from Alexis Robbers (14th minute) and Becky Lackey (27th minute) to defeat the Griffons 2-0  at Spratt Stadium Friday night.

Missouri Western (4-9-1) managed just three shots on goal.  The Jennies had 10.

Central, ranked 3rd in the region, runs its record to 11-1-3 overall.

The Griffons return to action Sunday, October 21st when they host Southwest Baptist at noon.

Griffon volleyball gets swept by No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney

Missouri Western volleyball fell to the No. 5 ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers Tuesday night at home 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-18)

In the first set, Nebraska-Kearney jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The Griffons carried a little momentum after that, marking the game 14-4, but the Lopers then went on their own run to extend their lead, and eventually won the set 25-8.

The second set was closer, as the Griffons fought their way to a 17-12 set. But the Lopers went on another run to take the 21-13 lead before the Griffons scored four of the next five points to bring the match close again. Nebraska-Kearney still pulled the set out to go up 2-0 with a 25-16 set win.

The third set was tied 8-8 in the first portion of the game. The Lopers took command shortly afterward, but the Griffons kept the game close with a few nice rallies and the game eventually settled at 21-16. Nebraska-Kearney won the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Jessie Thorup led MWSU with kills as she finished the match with seven. Stephanie Hattey had 17 assists to again lead the team.  Along with Hattey, Jordan Chohon had eight digs for the tie in the team-high.

Nebraska-Kearney’s Ariel Krolikowski finished with nine kills to lead the Lopers and Jenna Rouzee had a game-high 37 assists.

Western men’s golf team finishes 9th at MWSU Central Region Invite

The Missouri Western men’s golf team finished the MWSU Central Region Invite in 9th place firing a three round total of 905 (306-295-304). The event was held at the St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo. The Griffons were six strokes back of Minnesota State-Mankato and Arkansas Tech for 7th as they both shot 898. The winner of the event was Central Oklahoma with a 860 (283-283-294) which was 21 strokes ahead of second place finisher Central Missouri who shot 881 (300-290-291).

Tyler Gast led the charge for the Griffons firing a 221 (71-74-76) putting him in a tie for 11th place. Weston Apple tied  for 21st with a 224 (79-71-74) while Scott Sheldon, Derek Hawkins and James O’Brien fired 227 (78-74-75), 237 (78-76-83) and 237 (80-78-79) respectively.

Eric Kline of Central Oklahoma won the event firing a 210 (67-70-73) which was five strokes ahead of  Northeastern State’s Zach Tucker and Minnesota State’s Greg Werner.

This was the final event of the fall for the Griffons. The will open their spring schedule in March 2013. The schedule will be released in the next few months.

Griffons fall ten spots to No. 13 in D2Football.com Top 25

The Missouri Western football team suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday and now sit in 13th in the latest D2Footballl.com media poll which was released Tuesday morning.

The Griffons are one of six MIAA teams ranked in the latest poll.  Northwest Missouri State is third, while Pittsburg State fell from No. 1 to No. 8.  Washburn comes in at 20th, Central Missouri is No. 21 and Emporia State is ranked 22nd.

Western is 6-1 this season and 5-1 in MIAA play. The Griffons travel to Pittsburg, Kan. Saturday to play Pitt State.

Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm from Carnie Smith Stadium.  You can hear the game on the Griffon Sports Network (680 KFEQ & 1360 KMRN) beginning at 1:00 pm.

Missouri Western falls to No. 16 in latest AFCA Top 25 poll

The Missouri Western football team dropped 12 spots to 16th in this weeks AFCA top 25 Division II coaches poll which was released on Monday morning.

After opening the season 6-0 the Griffons fell for the first time this season last Saturday by a score of 31-30 against Missouri Southern in St. Joseph, Mo.

The schedule does not get any easier for the Griffons as they travel to 7th ranked Pittsburg State on Saturday, October 20th. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm in Pittsburg, Kan.

MWSU is 6-1 overall and 5-1in MIAA play.

The Griffons have been ranked in the top 25 in the last 15 polls and have received votes in 33 of the last 37 coaches polls. This is the 43rd time under Partridge that a Griffon team is ranked in the top-25.

Western sits in 11th after day one of MWSU Invitational

The Missouri Western men’s golf team sits in 11th place after day one of the MWSU Invitational which is being held at the St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo. The Griffons fired 601 (306-295) which is one stroke back of Winona State and two strokes back of Augustana (S.D.). The leader of the event is Central Oklahoma with a 566 (283-283) which is 17 strokes ahead of Arkansas Tech University who fired a 583 (303-280).

Tyler Gast leads the charge for the Griffons firing a 145 (71-74) putting him in a tie for 9th place. Weston Apple is in a tie for 36th with a 150 (79-71) while Scott Sheldon, Derek Hawkins and James O’Brien fired 152 (78-74), 154 (78-76) and 158 (80-78) respectively.

Eric Kline of Central Oklahoma is in first place firing a 137 (67-70) which is five strokes ahead of teammate Russ Puser, Northeastern State’s Zach Tucker and Missouri Southern State’s Ryan Burek.

The final round of the event will be a shotgun start tomorrow morning at 9:00 am.

No. 4 Griffons get upset by Missouri Southern, 31-30

The 4th ranked Missouri Western football team fell 31-30 in a heart-breaker against the Missouri Southern Lions on homecoming Saturday. The Griffons turned the ball over on its final two possessions which ultimately gave them their first loss of the season. MWSU falls to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play.

The Griffons opened up the scoring in the first quarter when Travis Partridge hit Reggie Jordan from five yards out capping a four play 45 yard drive giving the Griffons the 7-0 lead. In the second quarter the scoring picked up with a combined 27 points scored between the two teams.

The Lions used a 14 play 75 yard drive which was capped off by a Kellen Cox one yard touchdown run. The Lions used a fake punt and a couple Griffon penalties to keep the scoring drive alive. The Griffons responded the next drive with a fake punt of their own. Jordan took the snap and ran 86 yards for his second touchdown of the game giving the Griffons a 14-7 lead with 11:54 to play in the half.

The two teams traded field goals the next two possession giving the Griffons the 17-10 lead after Taylor Anderson nailed a 27 yard field goal with 1:46 to play in the half. Missouri Southern kept calm responding with a touchdown drive ending the half. Ne’ront Threatt scored as time expired from two yards out tying the score at 17 heading to the locker room.

The Griffons had 245 yards of total offense in the half with 165 coming on the ground. Jordan had 86 yards rushing while Partridge had 46 and Michael Hill had 33. Partridge completed 10-of-11 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown while Derek Libby had two receptions for 34 yards. Stephen Juergens led the Griffons with six tackles while David Bass and Raymond Cottman had five tackles.

MSSU had 226 yards with 128 on the ground. Cox had 13 carries for 52 yards with a touchdown. Cox completed 4-of-9 passes for 68 yards with Bryant Venson had three catches for 59 yards. Demond Horsely and Breon Matlock both had three tackles at the half.

In the third quarter the Griffons found themselves in an unfamiliar situation when the Lions drove 74 yards on seven plays capped by a Bryant 38 yard run which gave MSSU the lead 24-17 with 7:14 to play in the third. The Griffons responded on the next drive when Partridge hit Kyle Knox for a 61 yards touchdown setting MWSU on the MSSU one. Partridge took the next snap in tying the score at 24 with 6:02 to play in the third.

The Griffons used a 53 yards and a 29 yard field goal from Anderson giving them a 30-24 lead with 4:34 to play.

With it 2nd and 10 form the Southern 37 yard line the lightening came forcing a rain delay which started at 4:06 pm with 3:56 to play in the game. The game would resume 54 minutes later with the Lions coming out ready to play. They drove down the field scoring with two minutes left on the clock after a JJ Jones one yard plunge giving the Lions the 31-30 lead.

The Griffons took the ball to the Lion 38 yard line but a fumble gave the ball right back to MSSU. The Griffon defense held the Lions on their next three plays giving the Griffons the ball back at its 30 yard line with 40 second to play. The next play would be a turnover which sealed the Lions victory. They improve to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in MIAA play.

Missouri Western finished with 493 yards of offense with 260 coming on the ground. This marked the first game in two years that the Griffons have lost when rushing for over 200 yards. Partridge had 67 yards while Hill finished with 53 yards on 14 carries. Kyle Knox caught five passes for 103 yards while Partridge connected on 20-of-27 passes for 233 yards.

The Lions had 374 yards with 237 on the ground. Venson had 91 yards on five carries while Threatt had 37 yards on seven carries.

Juergens finished with 11 tackles while Bass and Cottman chipped in seven apiece. Aaron Hall led the Lions with eight tackles with six being solo. Demond Horsely had seven tackles all of which were solo.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, October 20 against #1 Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm in Carnie Smith Field.

Western volleyball loses five-set heartbreaker to Central Oklahoma

Missouri Western volleyball dropped a close, five-set match Saturday night against Central Oklahoma (25-20, 26-24, 17-25, 18-25, 15-8). The Griffons were down two sets and came back to tie it before dropping the final set of the match.

After the Bronchos took the opening set 25-20, Missouri Western came close to pulling out the important second set. The Griffons were ahead 5-1 but quickly fell behind afterward. MWSU came back to tie the game at 23 all, but the Bronchos took the set win at the end, 26-24.

MWSU won the next two sets to tie the match at two. In the third set, the Griffons kept the lead all the way through, taking the set 25-17. The fourth set was much the same, as they powered their way to a 25-18 victory.

But with the match tied at two sets, the Bronchos took the final set 15-8.

Missouri Western was helped by 14 service errors by Central Oklahoma. The loss drops the Griffons to 12-11 and 3-7 in the MIAA. Stephanie led the Griffons with 39 assists, and Sarah Faubel and Amanda Boender tied for the lead in kills with 11. Morgan Roy finished with 23 kills and Faith Harmon tallied 51 assists in their team’s victory.

MWSU soccer loses in double overtime at Nebraska-Kearney

Missouri Western soccer lost in double overtime to Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon 2-1.

The Griffons fell behind in the first half after Sara Chapman knocked a header in from 5-yards out in the 12th minute.

MWSU came back in the second period, however. AJ Powers received a pass from K.C. Ramsell and Powers kicked the ball into the net in the 61st minute.

Both teams struggled to take control after that as the game went into overtime. It was the Griffons third straight overtime game, after a win at Emporia State and a tie against Fort Hays State.

Saturday’s game was not as successful, though. In the second overtime period, Nebraska-Kearney’s Becka Talcott rebounded a shot attempt and put the ball into the goal for the 2-1 victory.

The Griffons fall to 4-8-1 and 2-6-1 in the conference.

Western soccer rallies to force draw at Fort Hays State

The Missouri Western soccer team (4-7-1, 2-5-1 MIAA) came back twice against the Fort Hays State Tigers (7-5-1, 3-4-1 MIAA) salvaging a tie in MIAA action. The Griffons scored twice in the second half and held off the Tigers getting the big road tie. Abby Widrig became the Griffons all-time leader in goals when she scored her fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute of play. This marked her 12th goal of her career.

The Griffons came out slow in the first period getting outshot 12 to two in the opening frame. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the half after Jordan Hester scored her fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute of play. Griffon goalie Kelly Voigts had three saves in the period.

MWSU responded early in the second half when Widrig tied the score at one off an assist from AJ Powers. The score remained tied until the 78th minute when Jordan Shaw of FHSU took a loose ball in the box and blasted it past Voigts for her first goal of the season.

The Griffons remained calm and in the 82nd minute Rochelle Gillilan took a free kick at the top of the box and blasted it past the Tiger goalie tying the score at two. The goal marked her first goal of her career.

The Tigers had fours combined shots in the overtime periods but the Griffons were able to keep the score knotted at two.

The Griffons had 10 shots with Widrig taking six with four on goal. Voigts improved to 4-6-1 with the tie. She had nine saves on the night.

The Tigers were led by Alexis Aiman with six shots with two on goal. Nicole Barnaba finished the game with four saves.

Missouri Western returns to road action on Saturday, October 13 when they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
