Western breaks six-game skid with win over Washburn

Sophomore forward Ashley Juravich scored two goals pacing the Griffons to a 3-2 victory over the Washburn Lady Blues in MIAA soccer action. The Griffons had 17 shots with eight on goal as they improve to 4-9 overall and 1-6 in MIAA play.

Despite being out shot 7-5 in the opening frame the Griffons were able to capitalize on their first shot of the contest taking a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute of action. K.C. Ramsell gave Juravich a nice pass which Juravich put into the lower left hand corner for her third goal of the season.

The Lady Blues had four shots on goal with Kelly Voigts making all four saves for Western. Western also had eight fouls to the Lady Blues four. Ramsell and Juravich both had two shots for Western while Tia Stovall had three shots for Washburn.

The Lady Blues came out in the second half with some pressure tying the score at one in the 50th minute when Stovall punched one past Voigts. Western remained calm and in the 69th minute Katie Kempf found Juravich from 10 yards out for her second goal of the game putting the Griffons up 2-1.

Western pushed its lead to 3-1 when Kempf faked a Lady Blue defender and put it in the back of the net giving Western the two goal lead with 15 minutes to play. The Lady Blue responded at the 86th minute when Lauren Henry knocked in a ball to cut the lead to one with four to play. Western held Washburn out of the net the rest of the way snapping a six game losing streak.

The Lady Blues fall to 1-13-3 overall and 1-5-2 in MIAA play. Washburn finished with 18 shots with 11 on goal. Stovall and Henry had five shots apiece.

Voigts improves to 4-9 on the season while Juravich had five shots for Western.

Western will play their final match of the season on Saturday, October 29 when they take on the Emporia State University Hornets on senior day. The match is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Western will honor four seniors before the game. They include Molly Slattery, Brooke English, Audrey Henderson and Jeanna Ross.

Western men picked seventh by MIAA Coaches; Tied 5th in Media poll

The Missouri Western men’s basketball team were tabbed seventh in the MIAA preseason coaches poll and tied for 5th in the media poll which were announced today, Wednesday, October 26, 2011 by the league office.

Western received 44 points in the coaches poll trailing Missouri Southern with 97, Central Missouri with 92, Fort Hays State with 70, Washburn with 68 and Northwest and Pittsburg State with 64. The Lions received seven first place votes while Central Missouri received four. Southwest Baptist garnered 40 points while Emporia State, Truman and Lincoln received 36, 20 and 10 points respectively.

In the media poll, the Griffons were picked to tie for fifth with Northwest Missouri State, both of whom receiving 77 points. The Bearcats also received one first place vote. Missouri Southern came in first with 141 points and 11 first place votes while Central Missouri came in second with 117 points and one first place vote. Fort Hays State and Washburn came in third and fourth with 114 and 112 points respectively.

Pittsburg State and Emporia State came in seventh and eighth with 72 and 56 points while Southwest Baptist (53 pts.), Truman State (26 pts.) and Lincoln (13pts.) rounded out the ninth thru eleventh spots.

Western is coming off a 12-16 season and went 10-12 in MIAA play. Western played in their third straight MIAA Conference Tournament a season ago.

Western will open up their season with an exhibition contest against Livin the Dream on Thursday, November 4 in the MWSU Fieldhouse. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.  The Griffons will open up regular season play on Saturday, November 12 when they host Fontbonne University at 7:30 pm in the MIWSU Fieldhouse. With a victory the head coach Tom Smith will earn his 600th career victory.

Griffon women’s basketball picked to finish 8th in MIAA Coaches Poll; 7th in Media Poll

The Missouri Western Griffon women’s basketball team was tabbed 8th in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll and 7th in the media poll which were announced today, Tuesday, October 25, 2011 by the league office.

Western received 42 points in the coach’s poll seven points ahead of Fort Hays State University (35 pts.) and five points behind Truman State University (47 pts.). The Washburn Lady Blues led the way in the coach’s poll with 100 points and ten first place votes. The Emporia State Lady Hornets came in second with 87 points and one first place vote while Central Missouri was third with 83 points. Pittsburg State came in fourth with 69 points while Missouri Southern and Northwest Missouri State tied for fifth with 56 points. Southwest Baptist and Lincoln University came in 10th and 11th with 20 and 10 points respectively.

In the media poll, the Griffons were 7th receiving 81 points. Washburn (12) and Emporia State (3) were 1st and 2nd compiling 15 of the of the 16 first place votes. They received 171 and 154 point respectively. Western was eight points ahead of Fort Hays State (73 pts.) and trailed Missouri Southern (105 pts.) by 24 points. Northwest Missouri State was third in the poll with 139 points and one first place vote. Pittsburg State, Central Missouri and Missouri Southern came in fourth, fifth and sixth with 116, 110 and 105 point respectively.  Rounding out spots nine through 11 were Truman, Southwest Baptist, and Lincoln with 52, 38 and 17 points respectively.

The Griffons are coming off a 14-13 season and went 11-11 in MIAA play. The Griffons made its first trip to the MIAA Tournament since 2007-2008. The Griffons bring back 10 players from a season ago while bringing in seven new faces.

Western will take on the Livin the Dream in an exhibition game on Thursday, November 3 in St. Joseph, Mo. Tip time is set for 5:30 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Griffons will open the 2011-12 regular season on Saturday, November 12 hosting Quincy University in St. Joseph, Mo. Tip time is set for 5:30 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Western ranked 7th in first Super Region Four rankings; Northwest 3rd

After a convincing 45-7 victory over the Truman State Bulldogs last weekend on homecoming at Missouri Western the Griffons improve to 6-2 overall. The Griffons are ranked 7th in the first South Central Regional Poll which was released on Monday, October 24.

Western will hit the road for their final non-conference game of the season when they travel to Bolivar, Mo. to take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. Game time is set for 2:00 pm from Plaster Stadium.

Four other MIAA school are ranked in the poll with Pittsburg State sitting in second, Northwest Missouri State in third, Washburn in 4th and Central Missouri in 10th.

Griffon golf team finishes 2nd at Truman State

The Missouri Western women’s golf team wrapped up their fall schedule with a 2nd place finish at the Bulldog Classic. The event was played at the Kirksville Country Club in Kirksville, Mo. The Griffons fired a two round total of 673 (336-337) seven strokes ahead of host school Truman State 680 (352-328).

The winner of the event was Nebraska-Omaha with a 638 (321-317). Lincoln University finished in fourth with a 688 while Truman State B fired a 727 and St. Ambrose fired a 748. The individual winner of the event was UNO’s Armana Christianson firing a two round total of 153 (80-73).

Shelby Stone was the top finisher for the Griffons tying for 4th with a 163 (77-86). Casi Webb was the only other Griffon in the top ten finishing in 7th with a 165 (83-82). Natalie Bird (171), Kristen Cooley (177) and Darcy Smith (178) finished in 12th, 17th and tied for 18th respectively.

The spring 2012 schedule will be released in February.

Western-Northwest game to air on MIAA TV Network

MIAA Commissioner Dr. Bob Boerigter announced Monday that Northwest Missouri at Missouri Western on Nov. 5 and Missouri Southern at Pittsburg State on Nov. 12 will fill the two flex slots on the 2011 MIAA Broadcasting Network football schedule.

“We had opted for the flex scheduling to try to bring forward games that had significant interest by fans,” Boerigter said. “These two games will have implications for not only the championship, but also for postseason play.”

Heading into the final three weeks of the regular season, Pittsburg State sits alone at the top of the MIAA standings with a 7-0 league record, while Northwest Missouri and Washburn are in a tie for second at 5-1 and Missouri Western is in fourth at 5-2 in conference play.

Kickoff for both the Northwest Missouri-Missouri Western and Missouri Southern-Pittsburg State games will be at 2 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast live on the MIAA Network.

Western golfers sit in 2nd after day one at Bulldog Classic

The Missouri Western women’s golf team is in 2nd place at the Truman State Bulldog Classic in Kirksville after firing a day one total of 336.

They are 15 strokes behind leader Nebraska-Omaha (321) and nine strokes ahead of Lincoln (345) who is in third place. Truman State sits in fourth with a 342. Shelby Stone is in a tie for first with UNO’s Rebecca Pollock firing 77s.

Casi Webb is in a tie for 7th with an 83 while Natalie Bird, Darcy Smith and Kristen Cooley fired 86, 90 and 93 respectively.

Western wraps-up their fall and the Truman State University Bulldog on Monday, October 24.

Griffon rolls up 632 yards as they blowout Truman

The Missouri Western football team cruised to a 45-7 victory over the Truman State Bulldogs on homecoming at MWSU. The Griffons racked up 632 yards of total offense with 271 coming of the ground and 361 through the air. Western improves to a perfect 5-0 when rushing for over 200 yards in a game this season and the 632 yards is the first time a Griffon team has went over 600 yards of total offense since September 16, 2000 when they went for 620 against Missouri-Rolla. The Griffons improve to 6-2 on the season and 5-2 in MIAA play.

Two Reggie Jordan touchdowns in the opening half sparked the Griffons to a 24-0 lead after two quarters. Jordan opened up the scoring when he took a snap on a fake punt and scampered 64 yards for a touchdown with 3:24 to play in the first quarter. Jordan capped off a six play 80 yard scoring drive by the Griffons.

Jordan gave the Griffons a 14-0 lead catching a four yard pass from Travis Partridge with 10:46 to play in the second quarter. The touchdown capped off an 11 play 44 yard scoring drive for Western. Western kept up the pressure getting a 28 yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein and an 80 yard pitch and catch from Partridge to Tarrell Downing with under a minute to play giving the Griffons the 24 point lead. Downing had three catches for 131 yards in the half.

The Griffons dominated offensively accumulating 381 yards of total offense with 215 coming through the air. Partridge completed 10-of-17 for 168 yards and two touchdowns. His only blemish was an interception in the end zone on the opening drive of the game for Western.

Michael Hill rushed 17 times for 87 yards while Nic Burrell had six tackles leading the Griffons defensively. Shane Simpson had an interception in the half while Sean Tray Bryson got the Griffons only sack. Western held the Bulldogs to just 47 yards passing and to 0-of-5 on third down conversions.

The Bulldogs finished with 147 yards on 32 plays. They rushed 19 times for 100 yards with Donald Harvey gaining 63 yards on nine carries. J.B. Clark struggled throwing the ball completing 5-of-11 passes for just 24 yards. Richie Schumacher had 10 tackles for the Bulldogs.

The Griffons continued to play well into the third quarter scoring on two of their first three possessions. Western first scoring drive of the quarter was a five play 71 yard which ended with Hill plowing in from six yards out putting Western up 31-0. The Griffons scored again on their next possession when Partridge hit Derek Libby on a 60 yard pitch and catch giving Western the 38-0 lead after three quarters.

The two teams traded scores in the fourth as Western’s Jerrin Walton scored a 29 yard touchdown with 7:31 to play giving Western the 38 point victory. The Griffons have won four straight on the season and four straight over the Bulldogs.

Hill led the way on the ground rushing 22 times for 95 yards and a touchdown while Walton rushed six times for 47 yards and a touchdown. Partridge finished with career best 278 yards connecting on 15-of-24 passes with three touchdowns. Downing had five receptions for 171 yards and a touchdown while Libby had a career best three catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs finished with 291 yards with 158 on the ground and just 133 through the air. Harnish Ayora had 82 yards on 15 carries while Harvey had 65 yards on 10. Conrad Schottel completed 6-of-21 passes for 91 yards while rushing for the Bulldogs loan touchdown. Truman falls to 2-6 on the season and 1-5 overall.

Defensively the Griffons were led by Burrell with nine tackles with 1.5 being for a loss. Jeremy Weston and Simpson each had seven stops. Western recorded three sacks with Bryson, Oliver Pryor and Ben Pister all getting one.

Truman State was led by Schumacher with 15 tackles with six being solo. M.J. Kang had two sacks for the Bulldogs.

Western will hit the road for a non-conference match up on Saturday, October 29 when they travel to Bolivar, Mo. to take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in MIAA action. Game time is set for 2:00 pm from Plaster Stadium.

Western volleyball defeats SBU to stay perfect at home

The Missouri Western volleyball remained perfect at home improving to 4-0 in the fieldhouse with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 31-29, 25-8) victory over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. Amanda Boender had a career best 11 kills on 39 attacks hitting .205. Western improves to 12-11 overall and 5-5 in MIAA action.

The Griffons struggled down the stretch in set one as the Bearcats closed the set on a 10-7 run winning by three at 25-22. Western hit .211 in the set with Shelby Corkill collecting six kills. In set two the Griffons got down 13-7 but a timeout by head coach Cory Frederick sparked the Griffons as they were able to outscore the Bearcats 18-10 run winning set to 25-23 and tying the match at one.

After two sets the Griffons were hitting .145 with 28 kills while Corkill led the way with 11 kills in 24 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Stephanie Hattey had 19 set assists and seven digs while Sarah Faubel had eight digs. The Bearcats hit .143 with Carrie Johnson collecting six kills on nine attacks. Whitney Gibson had 11 set assists while Kristi Hager had 10 digs.

Set three was  back and forth battle between the two squads as the Griffons were able to come away with the slim 31-29 victory taking a 2-1 lead in the set. The Griffons had 16 kills hitting just .093 in the set. The fourth set belonged to the Griffons winning 25-8 taking the match 3-1.

The Griffons finished with 55 kills with Corkill and Johnston pitching in 16 and 14 respectively. Hattey had 38 set assists while Corkill led the way with 17 digs. Hattey, Faubel and Torey Lyman added 16, 15 and 12 respectively.

The Bearcats fall to 9-15 overall and 4-7 in MIAA play. They had 45 kills with Johnson leading the charge with 11. Whitney Miller had 21 set assists while Kelsey Faunkhauser had 14. Hager had 21 digs while Britni Reed pitched in 17.

Western returns to action on next Friday, October 28 when they host the Emporia State Hornets. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse.

MWSU soccer continues to struggle with 4-0 loss at Fort Hays

The Missouri Western soccer team found shots hard to come by in Hays as they fell 4-0 in MIAA road action against Fort Hays State University. Western falls to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in MIAA action.

Western struggled in the first half accumulating just two shots with Abby Widrig and Sadie Naumann each taking one. Kelly Voigts made three saves for the Griffons in goal.

The home team Tigers controlled play in the first frame taking 10 shots with five on goal. Fort Hays took the lead in the 37th minute when Cindy Benitez scored her fifth goal of the season. The Tigers kept up the pressure as Becca Andres put FHSU up 2-0 off an assist by Benitez at the 39th minute of play.

Western continued their struggles into the second half as the Tigers scored twice on their first three shots. Benitez scored her sixth goal of the season on a free kick in the 54th minute and then Benitez gave an assists to Joanne Glynn in the 56th minute putting the Tigers up 4-0. For Glynn it marked her 8th goal of the season.

Western finished with five shots as Teddi Serna and Katie Kemph each had a shot on goal. Voigts made six saves for the Griffons.

The Tigers improve to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in MIAA play as they finished with 21 shots with nine on goal. Kelsey Grey picked up the victory making one save. Benitez finished with seven shots with four on goal. She scored two goals and had two assists.

Western will return home for the first of their final two home games of the season on Thursday, October 27 when they take on the Washburn Lady Blues at 7:00 pm in Spratt Stadium.
