Griffons golfers in 8th after day one at Missouri Intercollegiate

Led by a 14-over-par 158 from freshman James O’Brien that has him in a tie for 25th place, the Missouri Western State University Griffons sit in eighth place as a team after the first 36 holes of the Missouri Intercollegiate, played Tuesday at the Porto Cima Golf Club.

Western shot rounds of 326 -312 for a 638 total that trails leader William Woods (303-296) by 39 strokes. Central Missouri is 10 back and in second place, while Lindenwood is third at 611, Missouri-St. Louis fourth with a 627, Drury fifth with 628 and Rockhurst and Hannibal-LaGrange tied for 6th in the 18 team field with 634.

O’Brien struggled in his opening round of his collegiate career firing an 85 but settled down nicely in round two with a one over 73. Justin Taylor of William Woods leads the event firing a 5-under-par 139 (70-69) opening up a seven-stroke lead over Clarke Fry of Rockhurst and Sean Elliot of Central Missouri, each with 146s.

Junior, Tyler Gast sits in a tie for 29th firing a 159 (80-79) while senior Logan Gilliland is in a tie for 42nd with a 162 (84-78). Freshman Scott Sheldon sits in a tie for 51st with a 166 (84-82) while junior college transfer Kenny Stone sits in a tie for 63rd with a 168 (78-90).

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday.

Ramsell leads Griffon soccer to first win for Edwards

K.C. Ramsell continues her hot start scoring two more goal giving the the Griffons their first victory of the season and first under Head Coach Chad Edwards. Ramsell has scored all four of Western’s goals this season as Western sits at 1-1.

Despite being out shot 22 to eight in the contest Western had six on goal with three coming from Ramsell. She put the Griffons up 1-0 in the eighth minute of the game from ten yards out. Western held the Bulldogs out of the net the rest of the contest and in the 63rd minute Ramsell scored her second of the game and fourth of the season of a corner kick that deflected off the SWOSU goalie.

Griffon goalie Kelly Voigts had ten saves in the shutout. Abby Widrig and Ashly Castillo each had two shots apiece while Ramsell had three in the contest.

The Bulldogs were led by Kelsey Visor and Jessica Carbonara as they both had six shot with three on goal. Southwest Oklahoma State was picked to win the Great American Conference, but it at 0-1-1 on the young season.

Western returns to action on Sunday, September 11 when they travel to Wayne, Neb. to take on the Wayne State Wildcats in non-conference action.

Missouri Western names four finalists for Athletic Director opening

Missouri Western State University has named four finalists for the director of athletics position. The finalists include two senior administrators in Big 12 athletic departments, the athletic director at a top NCAA Division II school and a former Western athletic director.

“The search committee had an outstanding pool of more than 80 applicants to choose from,” said Dr. Robert A. Vartabedian, Western’s president. “I think all of our athletes, coaches, alumni and fans will agree that the four finalists are exceedingly well-qualified, and I’m very excited to bring them on campus and get to know them better.”

The four finalists will visit Western’s campus for interviews later this month. The schedule will be announced when it is finalized.
The finalists are:

Mark Alnutt, the senior associate athletic director for administration at the University of Missouri. Alnutt was promoted to that position in 2009, after three years as associate athletic director for administration. In that role, Alnutt provides administrative oversight to the sports of football, track and field, cross country, gymnastics and golf, leads the department’s project management team and has direct oversight of the media relations
office. He also manages postseason travel arrangements for each of MU’s 20 intercollegiate sport programs and handles the scheduling for a number of sports. He has overseen a number of facility improvements, including a $5 million video board project throughout the MU Sports Complex, a $2 million expansion and renovation of Taylor Baseball Stadium, and the current construction of a $5.6 million new Golden Girls/Gymnastics practice facility.
Alnutt spent the previous six years as football’s director of operations. In that role, his duties included coordinating the team’s travel plans, overseeing the football budget, handling compliance issues, scheduling facilities, assisting with recruiting operations and managing the day-to-day operations of the football program.

Alnutt was a three-year letterman for the Tigers as a linebacker and tight end and was voted the team’s Champion of the Year as a senior in 1995. He graduated that year with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and earned his Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in sports psychology in 2000, also at Mizzou.

Alnutt is a volunteer board member and coach with the Columbia Youth Football League. He previously served as the president of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Boone County, and was selected to participate in the 2002-03 NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males. In June of 2005, he received recognition by Columbia Business Times as one of Columbia’s 40-Under-40 business leaders, for his work in the community. He also participated in the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Institute in July of 2005 and 2007, attended the NACDA Mentoring Institute in June of 2008 and was appointed to the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics committee in December of 2008. In 2010, he received the university’s Barbara S. Uehling Award for Administrative Excellence.

Don Kaverman, the current athletic director at Harris-Stowe University in St. Louis and director of athletics at Western from 1995-1999. In his year at Harris-Stowe, he has led upgrades to athletics’ facilities, including a new basketball floor and soccer and baseball field improvements; developed a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; worked to improve academic support for at-risk student-athletes; and improved fiscal accountability and communication in the department.

From 1999 to 2009, Kaverman was athletic director at Southeast Missouri State University, an NCAA Division I school in Cape Girardeau, Mo. During his 10 years there, Southeast claimed more than 30 Ohio Valley Conference championships and sent nine teams and numerous individual athletes to NCAA postseason competition. In addition, half of all student-athletes earned a cumulative grade point average exceeding 3.0. Kaverman oversaw almost $5.2 million of capital improvement projects at Southeast.

At Western, Kaverman eliminated a budget deficit in the athletic department, increased funding by more than 35 percent by expanding the corporate sponsorship program and oversaw several capital improvement projects, including new seating for the Looney Arena.
Before his time at Western, Kaverman served as associate director of athletics for business and financial affairs at San Diego State from 1992-1995 and associate director for student-athlete services from 1988-1992. Prior to that, he was head athletic trainer at San Diego State, coordinator of sports medicine at Ferris State University, conditioning coordinator and assistant athletic trainer for the Detroit Lions and assistant athletic trainer at Northwestern University.

Kaverman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Master of Arts in physical education from Michigan State University.
Active in a number of organizations, Kaverman has served on the NCAA Committee for Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, chairing the Drug Education/Drug Testing Subcommittee. He is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and is the past President for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association. In addition, he served on the NCAA FCS Football Committee and the Division I Football Issues Committee.

Kaverman is the recipient of the 1988 Meritorious Performance and Professional Promise Award from the California State University system and the 1980 Outstanding Young Man in America Award from the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Jeremy McClain, director of athletics at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., an athletic department with 13 sports and approximately 350 student-athletes, a position he has held since 2007. He also serves as the executive director of the Green & White Fund, the athletics fundraising arm. McClain helped secure $4.5 million for the first phase of Delta State’s athletic master plan, and secured corporate funding for a $1 million scoreboard/videoboard project. Over two years, corporate sponsorship dollars increased by more than 100 percent. McClain worked with selected architects and engineers on several projects, and negotiated departmental contracts with various providers, including Nike, Cellular South and All-Sport.
Delta State’s student-athletes have been successful in the classroom and in athletic competition. During McClain’s tenure, graduation rates of student-athletes increased from 50 percent to 69 percent. Teams won six Gulf South Conference championships. The Delta State football team competed in the NCAA Division II national championship game last year, and the women’s basketball team made two consecutive Final Four appearances. The school has hosted eight NCAA regional events as well as nine regionally televised and two nationally televised sporting events.

McClain has been a member of NCAA regional football and baseball selection committees and is a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame selection committee. He received the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director of the Year Award from the All-American Football Foundation in 2010.
Prior to serving as Delta State’s athletic director, McClain was the university’s director of development in 2006 and 2007. He secured more than $250,000 in pledges during his first three months in that position. He previously worked as a marketing representative for Federated Insurance Company in Calhoun, Miss., and as an account executive for the Jackson Senators professional baseball team.

McClain was an All-American baseball player at Delta State, setting many school pitching records that still stand. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox organization in 1999 and played professional baseball for the next five years, and was named a Central Baseball League all-star three times. He graduated from Delta State with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1999 and a Master of Business Administration in 2002.

Kurt McGuffin, assistant athletic director/director of athletics development at the University of Colorado-Boulder, a position he’s held since 2010. McGuffin created and implemented a new annual giving program which increased total giving by 15 percent and added more than 600 members in the first year. He assisted with fundraising and development of a new $15 million court sport practice facility.

Prior to his time at Colorado, McGuffin served 10 years in the Kansas State University athletic department. From 2008-2010, he served as senior associate athletic director for external operations. He was the administrator for men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field/cross country and men’s and women’s golf. He oversaw all external operations in the department, including development, ticketing, marketing and communication offices. The department completed more than $25 million in facility enhancements.

McGuffin had a role in drawing more fans to Kansas State sporting events. He led marketing campaigns that generated the biggest football opening day crowd in Kansas State’s history and led the sales group that sold out men’s basketball games three out of four years. During his tenure, Kansas State women’s basketball and volleyball were in the top 10 nationally for attendance.

Previously at Kansas State, McGuffin served as associate director of athletics for development from 2005-2008. In that role, he directed the efforts of six fundraisers and four staff members to raise more than $12 million annually. He also oversaw the ticket office, which generated more than $16 million in revenue. McGuffin successfully completed the $90 million athletics department piece of the $500 million “Changing
Lives” university-wide capital campaign, and oversaw a $6.5 million growth in the endowment for athletics.

Also at Kansas State, McGuffin served as assistant director of athletics for annual giving and assistant director of athletic development. He also served as assistant director of athletics for development at the University of Idaho in 1999 and 2000, and as a graduate assistant for fundraising at Wichita State University, director of men’s basketball operations at Eastern Washington University and head men’s basketball student assistant at Kansas State.
McGuffin received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Kansas State in 1996 and his Master of Science in Education from Wichita State in 1999.

Western volleyball splits two matches Saturday to finish 2-2

The Missouri Western volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Lady Buff Classic held in Canyon, Texas by West Texas A&M. Western opened up the day with a five set victory over Texas-Permian Basin (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-11, before falling 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 27-25) against host school West Texas A&M closing out the classic. Western went 2-2 in the classic with their other victory coming against Eastern New Mexico University.

Texas-Permian Basin

The two teams played a close match opening up the final day of the Lady Buff Classic. The Griffons and Falcons played the first thirty points of the first set even before Western took four straight points giving them a 19-15 lead. The two teams scored six points apiece down the stretch but Western ended the set on a Tahler Johnston kill.

The Falcons tied the set at one taking set two 25-20. The Falcons scored five of the final eight points to claim the victory. Western came back winning set three 25-22 but once again the Falcons tied up the match at two taking set four in dominating fashion 25-14.

In set five the Griffons jumped out to a 6-1 lead and was able to hold on for the 15-11 victory in the set and a 3-2 match victory.

Western hit .171 with Johnston leading the way with 18 kills while Alex Behnke pitched in 11. Behnke hit .450 in the match. Stephanie Hattey had 30 set assists while Kelly Scannell pitched in 19. Sarah Faubel had 17 of the Griffons 56 digs.

The Falcons were led by Alex Genung with 18 kills while Melissa Lusk had 13. Sara Torres had 24 set assists while Ariel Fralick had 23. Defensively Danae Eckart had 19 digs. The Falcons fell to 0-3 with the loss.

West Texas A&M

The Lady Buffs dominated the fist two sets winning 25-12 and 25-16. Western played with West Texas A&M in set three but could not close out the set.

Western led 23-21 after a kill by Shelby Corkill but the Lady Buffs won six of the final eight points taking the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.

The Griffons hit .186 in the match with Behnke leading the charge with 10 kills. Hattey finished with 21 set assists while Johnston had 10 digs and nine kills.

West Texas had 12 kills apiece by Halie Harton and Stormi Lancaster. Lacy Hayes had 42 set assists while Lauren Beville had 13 digs. The Lady Buffs hit .376 in the match. The Lady Buffs improved to 3-0 with the victory.

The Griffons return to action on Friday, September 9 when they take on Chadron State at 2:00 pm and Nebraska-Kearney at 8:00 pm in the UNK Fall Classic presented by Best Western & Runza in Kearney, Neb.

Missouri Western volleyball finishes 1-1 on opening day

The Griffon volleyball squad opened up the 2011 season going 1-1 on the opening day of the Lady Buff Classic hosted by West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. Western won their opening match 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18) over Eastern New Mexico and fell in the night cap 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-21) against Angelo State.  Senior middle hitter Alex Behnke led the way 24 total kills on the day which included tying her career high with 14 in the opening match.

Eastern New Mexico Match

The first three matches were tightly contested battles as the Griffons were able to take two out of the first three. Western led set one 15-11 but a 14-8 run by Eastern New Mexico gave the Zias the 1-0 lead in the match. In set two the two teams went back and forth once again but a 4-1 run by Western to close out the set tied the match up one. Western hit .182 in the set with 15 kills.

Western jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in set three, but the Zias would come back cutting the Griffon lead to 14-12. Western regrouped as a redshirt freshman Meredith McCormick kill and a Zias attack error gave the Griffons the 25-22 win and 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, a pair of McCormick kills snapped a 13-all tie and allowed Western to build a 20-15 lead. Western won five of the next eight points earning the 25-18 victory to end the match.

Western hit .155 as a team as McCormick and Behnke hit .450 and .237 respectively. McCormick and senior Tahler Johnston chipped in 11 kills apiece. Sophomore setter Stephanie Hattey had 40 set assists and eight kills. Freshman Sarah Faubel had a nice opening match tallying 26 digs while Johnston chipped in 16.

Eastern New Mexico was led by Amber Durand with 21 kills and 16 digs while Tarrah Sweet had 44 set assists. The Zias fall to 0-1 on the season.

Angelo State Match

Western struggled in the second match of the day falling in three straight sets to Angelo State. Western hit just .095 with 33 kills in the match. Behnke led the charge once again with 10 kills while hitting .348.

The Rambelles dominated hitting .352 with 46 kills in the match. Kaelen Valdez led the charge with 11 kills while Alex Woolsey had 39 set assists. Angelo State hit .545 in set one with 14 kills while tallying 19 kills in the third and final set. Angelo State improves to 2-0 on the season.

Faubel led the Griffons defensively with 15 digs while Hattey had 33 set assists.

Western returns to action tomorrow with matches against Texas Permian Basin and host school West Texas A&M. Match times are scheduled for 9:00 am and 2:00 pm respectively.

Griffon soccer team loses Edwards’ debut in overtime

Missouri Western opened the Chad Edwards era with a heartbreaking loss, 3-2 in overtime against East Central University. Western falls to 0-1 with the loss.

Western took the early lead in the ninth minute when freshman K.C. Ramsell took a pass from Ashley Juravich putting the Griffons 1-0. The Tigers responded in the 21st minute when Laura McNab put one past Kelly Voigts.

The Griffons took the lead again in the 73rd minute when Ramsell scored her second goal of the night off an Ashlyn Castillo pass.

The Tigers came back tying the score in the 85th minute when Stephanie Flores put one in the back of the net. In overtime the Tigers Ashley Bradford won the game in the 95th minute off a Margaret Glutz assist.

East Central outshot the Griffons 24 to 8 in the game and had seven corner kicks to Western’s one.

Ramsell led Western with five shots and three on goal.

East Central was led by Bradford adn Whitney Watts with six shot apiece.

Western will conclude the GAC/MIAA challenge on Sunday, September 4 with a noon contest agaisnt Southwestern Oklahoma State in Ada, Okla.

Western gets pounded by Pitt State in season opener, 34-7

Missouri Western struggled in its 2011 season opener falling 34-7 against Pittsburg State University. The Griffons fell at home in a season opener for the first time since August 26, 2004 when they fell 27-10 against 18th ranked Winona State. Western sits at 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in MIAA play.

Pittsburg State dominated the opening frame of the 2011 season out gaining the Griffons 229 to 84 in total yardage. The Gorillas put up 14 points in the first and second quarter taking a 28-0 lead at the half.

A 46 yard punt by Griffon punter Scott Groner on MWSU’s opening possession was returned 84 yards by PSU’s Johns Brown giving the Gorillas the 7-0 lead with 11:19 to play. The Gorillas scored again with 1:45 to play in the quarter after a Zac Dickey 44 yard run capping a six play 81 yard drive.

Things did not getting any better for Western in the second quarter as the Gorillas scored at the 7:05 mark off a four yard run by Solomon Watkins. Briceton Wilson gave the Gorillas the 28-0 lead just before half plunging in from one yard out with 10 seconds to play in the frame.

The Griffons were led on the ground by Michael Hill rushing for 34 yards on 10 carries. Travis Partridge went 7-for-14 with two interceptions and 62 yards while TJ Fannin caught two passes for 45 yards. Jeremy Western had four tackles leading the Griffons defense. Groner punted five times for 244 yard (48.8 ypp) with a long of 64 yards.

The Gorillas had 117 yards on the ground with Dickey leading the way with 61 yards on six attempts and one touchdown. Dickey completed 10-of-14 attempts for 112 yards with Brown catching four passes for 70 yards. John White led the way with five tackles and one sack for PSU.

The Gorillas continued to play well in the second half using two Chase McCoy field goals of 22 and 38 yards pushing the score to 34-0 late in the fourth quarter. The Griffons best chance to score came early in the second half but a fumble inside the PSU five ended the Griffon threat.

The Griffons scored late in the contest on a Dominic Thomas 60 yard touchdown with 1:52 to play in the game ending any chance of being shutout.

The Griffon managed just eight first downs and 191 yards of total offense. Thomas led the way on the ground rushing four times for 68 yards while Hill rushed 14 times for 44 yards. Partridge finished the game completing 10-of-20 passes for 79 yards while being sacked five times.

Gronner finished the game punting nine times for 414 yards and an average of 46.0 yards. He had three inside the 20.

The Gorillas finished with 426 yards of total offense with Dickey rushing 15 times for 117 yards. Wilson rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown while Brown caught four passes for 70 yards.

Nic Burrell led the charge for Western on defense with seven tackles (5 solo, 2 assists) while the Gorillas were led by Gus Toca and Joe Uzzel with six apiece.

Western will return home for their second straight MIAA home game to open the season when they host #15 Central Missouri in an MIAA Televised game on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm on Family Day in Spratt Stadium.

MWSU softball coach Jen Bagley hosting Pitching Academy

Missouri Western softball will be hosting a four week pitching academy starting on Monday, September 12. The clinic will be held every Monday with the last date being October 6. The clinic is for ages 18 & under.

There will be three sessions per night running for 45 minutes each. You will be able to pick either the 3:30 pm, 4:30 pm or 5:30 pm slot. There is a maximum of six players per session.

The cost of the clinic is $80 for all four weeks and each player will need to bring an appropriate sized ball and personal catcher to each session.

Griffon Sports Insider returns this Wednesday

The 2011-2012 debut of the official television show of Western Athletics “Griffon Sports Insider” is set for this Wednesday, August 31st at 6:30 PM.

The half hour show hosted by Ryan Menley and Brett Esely features game recaps and highlights, coach and student-athlete interviews, feature stories, a preview of future games and other department events and a weekly pick segment.

This year, Griffon Athletics is pleased to announce a partnership with Spine and Sport Physical Therapy as presenting partner of GSI.  “We are extremely excited to partner with MWSU Athletics and look forward to the opportunity to promote our services as well as work with Griffon student-athletes,” said Fred Shonkwiler, physical therapist and owner of Spine and Sport.

During each week’s show, Shonkwiler, along with Griffon student-athletes will take part in a sports performance segment entitled “Train Like The Pros.”  The segments will highlight some of the specialized training that Shonkwiler has received and how his work with MWSU student-athletes will help them excel even greater on the field, court or course.

Griffon Athletics is also excited to announce that this year’s show in addition to appearing on Suddenlink Channel 3, will air on KQTV.  Fans can view the show Wednesday’s on KQTV at 11:30 AM and 12:35 AM.  The first show of the season (next Wednesday) and the first show of basketball season will air at a special time of 6:30 PM serving as a kickoff show.  The Suddenlink Channel 3 air times are also on Wednesday’s at 6 & 10 PM.

Western student-athletes will be out in St. Joe Saturday to promote opener

The Missouri Western football team opens the 2011 season next Thursday at Spratt Stadium as they host Pittsburg State at 6 PM.

To help raise awareness and excitement for the upcoming season, several Griffon Football student-athletes will be at eight different Griffon Corporate sponsors throughout the city this Saturday, August 27th meeting and greeting fans, handing out posters and schedule cards and even giving away a few tickets to the home opener.
