Missouri basketball hires Nick Michael as Director of Athletics Performance

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men’s Basketball head coach Kim Anderson has announced the addition of Nick Michael to his staff in the role of Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance.

Michael joined former Virginia Commonwealth assistant coach Mike Rhoades’ new staff at Rice as strength and conditioning coach in April 2014, where he developed and implemented new athletic performance programs for the Owls for the 2014-15 season. He previously spent the 2013-14 season assisting Shaka Smart’s VCU program as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach.

“Our Mizzou program is excited to add someone like Nick Michael to our staff,” Anderson said. “His energy and passion for developing student-athletes is unquestioned. Add in the fact that he was an accomplished professional basketball player, and you have someone who we feel can connect with our guys and help them make the right choices, both in the weight room and nutritionally speaking. We feel he will help our players develop the strength and toughness that is necessary to be successful in the SEC. We cannot wait to have Nick and his wife, Keeley, join us in Columbia.”

Michael played four seasons of professional basketball in Europe, spending time with Belfast Star in Ireland (2007) before suiting up for three German squads: TSVE Dolphins (2008-09), Giro Live-Ballers (2009-10) and Bayer Giants (2010-11).

“This is such an incredible opportunity, and I sincerely want to thank Coach Anderson, Mack Rhoades and Mizzou’s administration,” Michael said. “My passions are basketball, fitness, and figuring out how to be stronger, faster and mentally tougher. Being able to work at such a high level of college basketball with a staff that is high level themselves is a perfect situation.

“I spent a lot of time with Coach Anderson during the interview process and the comfort level is very high. But my main purpose is with the team. I’m so excited to work with them. It’s about building relationships. It’s extremely gratifying to watch student-athletes grow, learn and graduate. They’ll know when we get after it in the weight room, it’s about building mental toughness. It’s more than building muscle strength. Mental toughness and creating great work habits.”

Currently the head coach at Texas, Smart praised Michael’s expertise and passion when told of his hire at Mizzou.

“Nick is a terrific strength coach and was a huge asset to our program at VCU,” Smart said. “He will do great things for the athletic department at the University of Missouri and their student-athletes. His blend of technical knowledge, basketball experience and enthusiasm makes him one of the best.”

The Rams finished 26-9 on the season and powered their way into the NCAA Tournament with a second-place showing in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Prior to his work at VCU, Michael served two seasons as an assistant coach at Elmhurst College (Illinois), his alma mater.

As a player at Elmhurst (2003-07), Michael left his mark. He was a three-time all-conference selection at center for the Bluejays, finishing his career ranking in the Division III program’s top 10 in points scored (1,199) and rebounds (588).

Michael earned a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Elmhurst before departing on his professional career in 2007, then returned to earn a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science in 2013 during his stint as an assistant coach. While at VCU, Michael earned a Master’s of Education in Sport Leadership in 2014.

Michael spent the 2015-16 season working in private athletic performance coaching in the Houston area.

Michael has attained several certifications, including Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified (CSCCa), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and USA Weightlifting Level 1 Performance Coach.

Missouri takes down Kentucky in series opener 9-3

riggertMissouriLEXINGTON, Ky. – Mizzou Baseball used a barrage of two-out hits to defeat Kentucky, 9-3, in the series opener Thursday night (May 19) at Cliff Hagan Field. After going on top, 1-0, with a two-out RBI single in the fourth, Mizzou tallied five two-out hits to score four more runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. That was all the run support that Mizzou starter Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) needed as he tossed a complete game with eight hits and three earned runs while striking out nine with just one walk to earn his fifth win of the year. He did all of that on just four day’s rest.

Kentucky’s Zack Brown took the loss, his 11th of the season, as Mizzou tagged him for 12 hits over 7.0-plus innings with eight runs (all earned) while walking three and striking out four. The Tigers pounded out 14 hits, their most in SEC play as five players tallied multi-hit games. Mizzou moves to 26-27 on the year and moves closer to an SEC Tournament berth as its SEC record now stands at 9-19 on the year.

Mizzou had a chance to score off of Brown in the first inning as a one-out walk by Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) and Ryan Howard’s (St. Charles, Mo.) 12th double of the year put runners on the second and third with one out. But Brown got Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) to pop up and then Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) bounced out to strand a pair.

After Brown appeared to settle in, Mizzou got to him in the fourth inning as a two-out double to right center by C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) scored Lavy all the way from first to give Mizzou a 1-0 lead. It likely would have been more runs, but Howard was caught stealing after a leadoff single, his second hit of the day. The double was Bond’s second hit of the day as well.

Mizzou then continued its trend of two-out hitting in the fifth inning. After Brown got the first two outs, Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) ripped a single into right field to get the rally started. Ring doubled, Howard singled, Lavy doubled and Harris knocked a single up the middle and those five hits led to four runs as Mizzou broke the game open in the top of the fifth.

Houck responded with an easy 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth while picking up his third strikeout of the game. Mizzou added another run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ian Nelson (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) after Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) tallied his first extra-base hit of SEC play with a double to lead off the inning. Sharp advanced to third on a wild pitch before Nelson’s sacrifice fly.

Mizzou then added three in the eighth inning, two coming on a base-loaded double into right center by McGuire. UK tagged Houck for three runs in the eighth inning, two on a homer by Zach Reks, but he was lights out in the ninth, picking up two more strikeouts to end the game.

Mizzou and Kentucky will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CT). That game time was changed due to forecasted inclement weather tomorrow evening.

Tigers drop series finale against Georgia

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball got a solo homer from senior 1B Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) who continued his stellar season, but Mizzou fell, 5-2, in the rubber game against Georgia Sunday (May 15) at Taylor Stadium. Georgia starter Heath Holder was tremendous, earning his fourth win of the season after going 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts. He was also able to pitch around five walks. Mizzou starter Michael Plassmeyer (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the loss after going 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while walking none and striking out five.

Georgia got on the board in the top of the fourth on a no-doubt homer by catcher Micahel Curry, his third of the series and 11th of the season. UGA then tacked on another run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Skyler Weber, scoring Mitchell Webb, who had struck out to lead off the frame but reached on a wild pitch. That chased Plassmeyer from the game.

Mizzou reliever Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) appeared to be cruising, but he ran into trouble in the seventh as he walked the bases loaded. RHP Nolan Gromacki (Smithville, Mo.) relieved Tribby and allowed two hits to clear the bases and give UGA a 5-0 lead through 6.5.

Lavy then hit his eighth homer of the season, which leads the team, to start the bottom of the seventh. Mizzou then put two more men on after a Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) walk and a Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) single. But a pair of strikeouts stranded a pair as UGA took a 5-1 lead into the eighth inning.

Mizzou loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning and brought up Lavy, who hit a grand slam yesterday in the eighth inning, but he struck out. Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) then hit into an RBI fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 5-2 but Bond struck out to strand a pair.

The Tigers got a pair of two-out hits in the ninth, but couldn’t get the timely hit to extend the game.

Mizzou will close its home schedule on Tuesday as it welcomes former Big 12 rival Oklahoma for a 4 p.m. first pitch at Taylor Stadium.

Mizzou baseball splits doubleheader with Georgia

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball split a doubleheader with Georgia on Saturday afternoon (May 14) at Taylor Stadium. After Mizzou dropped game one, 7-4, Mizzou got a complete game shutout from senior RHP Reggie McClain (Duluth, Ga.) and a grand slam from senior 1B Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) in a 5-0 win to even the series on senior day. The rubber game of the three-game series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.

McClain pitched a gem in game two, allowing just three hits and a walk while matching a career-high with 12 strikeouts. It was his first complete game shutout against an SEC team and it came against the school with which he began his collegiate career. It was the second complete game shutout of his career and it was the first at Mizzou since Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) did so against Auburn on April 8, 2016. McClain clung to a 1-0 lead after a sixth inning homer from Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.), but Lavy gave him the insurance he needed in the eighth inning, launching a fastball over the fence for Mizzou’s first grand slam since March 30, 2010, by Eric Garcia against Purdue.

Mizzou dropped game one, 7-4, despite leading 4-3 after five innings. Georgia scored four runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as they came back for the win. Mizzou sophomore Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits as he falls to 3-5 on the year. UGA reliever Kevin Smith earned the win as he went to 5-1 on the year.

The first inning was eventful in game one of the doubleheader. Mizzou Houck was plagued by an error and a video review that took away an out on diving play in center by Ring. In all, Georgia plated three runs in the opening half inning (two unearned) and Houck threw 40 pitches. Mizzou nearly answered in the bottom of the frame as UGA starter Robert Tyler walked the first two men. Junior SS Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) then roped a ball into left field that looked to be extra bases and runs, but Keegan McGovern made a sensational catch on the run to rob Howard of a hit and RBIs. Tyler then got out of the inning to keep UGA on top, 3-0.

Mizzou got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run homer by DH Shane Benes (Town & Country, Mo.), his sixth of the season, second-most on the team. It came following a one-out walk by Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.).

Mizzou tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as back-to-back singles by Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) put runners on the corners with no outs. After a Sharp strikeout, Benes lifted a ball to left center for a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

Lavy continued his All-SEC caliber season with a go-ahead, two-out RBI single through the right side in the fifth inning. It came after Ring bunted for a hit and stole his SEC-leading 24th stolen base. But the lead didn’t last as UGA catcher Michael Curry launched a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4.

Georgia then plated two in the top of the eighth inning. The first was on a fielder’s choice as a grounder was hit to Lavy. He charged the ball, fired home, but Georgia’s Spencer Kieboom slid around the tag to give UGA a 5-4 lead. They tacked on another run on an error by Howard as he attempted to make a turn on a double play. That gave Georgia a 6-4 lead.

Howard doubled to right center to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, but the next three batters were retired to leave Howard stranded in scoring position. Mizzou then went quietly in the ninth as UGA added a run in the top half of the inning to erase any chance of a comeback for Mizzou.

In game two, McClain was outstanding through the first three innings with five strikeouts and four groundouts through the first three frames. Both starting pitchers were outstanding, allowing just two hits and a walk through five innings. After McClain turned in a shutout sixth, Mizzou finally got to UGA starter Connor Jones in the bottom of the inning as Ring launched his second home of the year, over the wall in right field, to put Mizzou in top, 1-0.

McClain was in complete control throughout the game and Lavy’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Mizzou the cushion it needed heading into the ninth. McClain responded by striking out the side to match his career-high with 12 strikeouts. He limited UGA to just three hits and a walk in the win, his fifth of the season.

Odom adds former Tiger A.J. Ofodile to Mizzou football staff

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Head Football Coach Barry Odom has added former Mizzou standout and NFL tight end A.J. Ofodile to his staff, as announced today.  Ofodile, who has been a successful head coach at Columbia’s Rock Bridge High School since 2003, will serve as the football program’s Director of Recruiting Operations.  Details of Ofodile’s appointment will be released once finalized, pending the completion of human resources procedures.

Ofodile, 42, served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for Odom at Rock Bridge during Odom’s head coaching stint there from 2001-02.  After Odom joined Mizzou’s coaching staff prior to the 2003 season, Ofodile took over as the program’s head coach.  In 2013, his Bruins were state runners up, reaching the state championship game for the school’s first time since 1993.

“I’m very excited to have A.J. joining our staff, he will be a huge part of our entire program, and specifically our recruiting efforts,” said Odom.  “I have tremendous respect for A.J. as a person and as a mentor and I’m excited for how he will represent our program and university.  He cares deeply about Mizzou, and shares a lot of the same beliefs that I have on building Mizzou into a championship program,” he said.

“I’ve been very set about if I was to ever make the move to the college level, that who I was going to be working for was the most important aspect, and it couldn’t be a better situation for me at Mizzou with Coach Odom,” said Ofodile.  “I have a world of respect for him, he’s a first-class person and I believe in his vision and the work that he and his staff are doing to build something special.  Naturally, it’s very special for me to be coming back to my alma mater.  Mizzou holds a very special place in my heart and I am very excited about doing anything I can to contribute to it,” he said.

Tigers fall to Illinois in annual Braggin’ Rights baseball game

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball dropped its annual Braggin’ Rights game to Illinois, 6-4, on Tuesday night (May 3) at GCS Ballpark as Illinois has now won the last two meetings in the series. The loss drops Mizzou to 24-22 while Illinois improves to 22-19. Mizzou junior SS Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) tallied his fifth homer of the year and also added a double, reaching base in three of four plate appearances. He also made a pair of sparkling plays in the field.

The start went to freshman righty Grant Macciocchi (West Chester Township, Ind.) who was masterful over three perfect innings. Illinois then tagged four runs on five hits in the fourth inning after Macciocchi exited the game and that broke it open for Illinois. Freshman Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) took the loss, just his second of the season, after allowing the four runs and five hits in the fourth. Illinois RHP Andrew Mamlic earned the win, moving him to 4-6 on the year.

Mizzou got on the board in the top of the first as Howard continued his hot hitting of late, launching a solo shot on a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left center to give Mizzou an early 1-0 lead. Macciocchi got three 5-3 groundouts in the first as he looked sharp early. He sat down the first nine he faced in three perfect innings, getting seven ground balls, a strikeout and a flyout.

Howard again got things started for Mizzou in the fourth, leading off the frame with his 10th double of the year. He then scored on a two-out error by Illinois 3B Trent Hammond off the bat of Mizzou C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) and that gave Mizzou a 2-0 lead.

Tim Jamieson went to the bullpen in the fourth in favor of Sharp and he surrendered a leadoff homer to Jack Yalowitz as that cut the lead in half at 2-1. He then allowed a two-run homer to Pat McInerney to put Illinois on top, 3-2. Illinois then added another on an RBI single and that ended Sharp’s day as Illinois tagged him for five hits and four runs and took a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning.

Illinois added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jason Goldstein. Mizzou then threatened to get to Mamlic in the sixth, putting the first two men on after a Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) double after a 10-pitch at-bat and an eight-pitch walk by Howard. But senior Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) grounded into a 3-6-1 double play and Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) grounded out to end the threat.

Sophomore RHP Nolan Gromacki (Smithville, Mo.) was sensational in relief, settling things down following late and keeping Mizzou in the game. He tossed 2.1 innings and struck out a career-high three batters. Mizzou then tallied two runs in the eighth inning on Lavy’s nation-leading eighth triple, cutting the lead to 5-4. Illinois then added an insurance run in the eighth inning.

Mizzou heads to Starkville, Miss., for a Thursday-Saturday series at No. 3 Mississippi State.

Missouri baseball completes sweep of Tennessee

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – A strong day at the plate for Mizzou Baseball [23-21, 6-14] gave the team a victory over Tennessee, 8-3, to complete the three-game sweep Sunday (May 1) at Taylor Stadium. Freshman LHP Michael Plassmeyer (St. Louis, Mo.) earned his fourth win of the season thanks to an impressive offensive performance that saw seven batters score a run, including two on a long fifth-inning home run by senior 1B Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.).

Plassmeyer had a solid day on the mound, allowing only 2 earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.  Redshirt sophomore Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.) and senior LHP Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) finished off the game without allowing another run. Tribby was particularly effective, striking out four batters in 2.0 innings pitched.

Tennessee gained a 1-0 lead on a third inning sac fly, but Mizzou responded quickly by taking the lead on a bases loaded, two-RBI single in the fourth inning from freshman 3B Ian Nelson (Lake St. Louis, Mo.).  Junior RF Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) knocked in a sac fly before the Lavy home run and a three-run outburst in the sixth inning capped off Mizzou’s strong day at the plate. SS Ryan Howard added a two-run single in the sixth inning as part of a three-run inning as Mizzou put the game away thanks to the strong bullpen work by Bartlett and Tribby.

Sophomore RHP Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) pitched well, going 7.2 innings giving up eight hits and two earned runs. Houck struck out six batters, marking the eighth time he has struck out at least six in a single game this year.

The offense used the long ball to their advantage, taking Tennessee’s starter Zach Warren over the fence twice in the first two innings, the only home runs he has given up all year, staking Mizzou to an early 3-0 lead.

Junior SS Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) hit the first homer on a solo bomb over the Mizzou bullpen in left field during the first inning. That home run extended his hitting streak to four games and his reached base streak to seven. Howard finished the day 1-4 and is now hitting .471 in his four game hitting streak.

Sophomore C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season with a two-run shot to right center field in the bottom of the second. Mizzou used small ball to finish off the Volunteers in the seventh and eighth innings. Junior OF Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) got Mizzou’s first pinch-hit hit of the year on an RBI single in the seventh to tie the score at four. Tennessee took the lead once more in the eighth inning off of a solo home run to dead center, but Mizzou answered with four singles in the bottom frame to earn the 6-5 win, capped off by Harris’ RBI single through the right side.

Mizzou continues its three-game series with Tennessee with game three Sunday (May 1) at 11:30 a.m.
