Bearcat baseball knocks off Northeastern State for first win

riggertNorthwestHead Coach Darin Loe and the Northwest Missouri State baseball team earned their first win of the 2013 season as the Bearcats defeated Northeastern State 7-5 Saturday.

Northwest got off the bus and pulled the bats out immediately as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Ryan Abernathy led off the game with a walk followed by two quick outs then a single by JJ Baccari knocked him in to go up 1-0.

Eric McGlauflin and Baccari were both on base when Charlie Krueger hit a three run home run to right field with two outs to put the Bearcats up 4-0.

The Bearcats also had a great showing from the hill as Blane Reutter went the distance for the complete game win. Reutter needed 110 pitches for the 9.0 inning victory as he had five strikeouts, allowed five earned runs and gave up only one walk. Reutter improves to 1-1 on the season.

NWMSU softball stays unbeaten with win over Southern Arkansas

riggertNorthwestJenna Creger pitched her second shutout in two days as the Northwest Missouri State offense erupted to roll past Southern Arkansas 8-0 in the 7-State Softball Classic Saturday.

Creger only allowed two hits and struck out 10 batters to help keep the Lady Muleriders’ bats at bay. With the win she also moves her record to 3-0 on the young season and helps keep the Bearcats a perfect 5-0.

Northwest got on the board in the top of the second inning when Kristine Labertew belted a one out double to right field. Labertew would score just one batter later when Madison Jones singled to left and an error by the SAU left fielder allowed Labertew to cross home standing up.

The Bearcats were not done as Kristen Uthe went deep for a three-run home run over the left field fence scoring Candace Miller and Jordan Ereth. Northwest continued to bat around in the inning when Jones double to left giving the Bearcats an 8-0 lead.

riggertNorthwestThe Northwest Missouri State softball team dominated Concordia-St. Paul for a 7-0 victory in game one and outlasted Illinois-Springfield 6-5 in extra innings Friday on day one of the 7-State Classic.

Bearcats’ rally comes up short against Fort Hays State

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team were unable to overcome a cold shooting night in the first half as they fell 64-60 to Fort Hays State Wednesday night in MIAA action.

Looking to snap a two-game losing streak, the Bearcats fell to 15-8 on the season and 8-6 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State holds its top spot in the league at 15-6 overall and 10-4 in league play as the win clinched the Tigers a berth in next month’s MIAA Tournament.

A feverish second half comeback saw the Bearcats erase what was a 16 point deficit at one time and a 35-21 Fort Hays State lead at the intermission.

After shooting a disappointing 30 percent from the field in the first half, Northwest turned the tables to shoot 48 percent in the second half. The Bearcats used a 13-4 run late in the second half to take their first lead of the night with 2:15 left in the game.

A deep three-pointer from Alex Sullivan put Northwest ahead 53-51, however the Tigers would answer on their next possession with a three-pointer of their own to regain the lead. Sullivan hit three, three-pointers and finished with nine points.

Both teams would trade baskets, when DeAngelo Hailey drove to the basket drawing a FHSU foul. Hailey hit one of two free-throws to tie the game at 56-56 with just 46 seconds left in the game.

Northwest was forced to foul as the Tigers finished a perfect 8-for-8 in the final minute from the free-throw line to seal the win. On the night FHSU missed just one free-throw going 13-of-14 from the line while the Bearcats shot 76 percent going 16-of-21.

Dillon Starzl returned to the court after missing last week due to injury leading the Bearcats with 16 points.

Fort Hays State was led Lance Russell, who scored a game-high 22 points. Teammate Craig Nicholson finished with 21 points as the duo combined for six of the Tigers’ seven three-pointers.

The Bearcats will look to snap their three-game losing streak in a rematch of last Saturday’s loss at Washburn. The Ichabods clinched a playoff berth with an overtime win at Missouri Western Wednesday night as Northwest now sits in sixth place.

Tipoff between the Bearcats and Ichabods is set for 3:30 p.m. from Bearcat Arena.

NWMSULooking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team dropped its most heartbreaking loss of the season Wednesday night falling to Fort Hays State 54-53 from Bearcat Arena.

Fighting to keep their postseason chances alive the Bearcats fell to 11-11 on the season and 5-9 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State improved to 17-5 overall and 9-5 in league play likely clinching a first round home game.

Working with a decisive height advantage, Fort Hays State pulled in the rebound to seal the win. The Tigers outrebounded Northwest 42-36.

It was a poor shooting night for both teams as the Tigers edged the Bearcats shooting just 31 percent. Northwest was held to 30 percent on the night.

The Bearcats trailed most of the first half before a three-pointer from Meridee Scott cut the lead to 27-24 at the half. FHSU stormed out of the locker room to lead by as many as nine points before Northwest took its first lead of the second half with 15:11 left in the game.

Both teams continued to trade baskets until a 9-2 run gave the Bearcats a huge momentum boost paced by three free-throws from Stevens during the run. Stevens led the Bearcats with 12 points in the loss and finished 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.

FHSU regained a lead they would not relinquish with 1:53 on a Katelyn Edwards’ jumper. Northwest was able to cut the lead to one on a Maggie Marnin layup before being forced to foul with 7 seconds left.

The Tigers hit both free-throws taking a 51-54 lead and setting up Stevens’ final free-throws.

Bearcats drop third straight road game as they fall to Washburn

NWMSUKyler Erickson scored a career-high 17 points Saturday night but Northwest Missouri State couldn’t overcome No. 17 Washburn falling 80-67 in MIAA men’s basketball action.

The Bearcats fall to 15-7 on the season and 8-5 in the MIAA dropping their third straight road game. The Ichabod’s improve to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in league play to move into the top four of the conference standings.

Entering Saturday’s game the Bearcats and Ichabods ranked as the top two teams defensively in the MIAA. After the dust settled it was Washburn who had held the Bearcats to just 36 percent from the field.

In addition to the solid defense from the Ichabods, their 80 points were the most given up by the Bearcats this season. Washburn was equally impressive on the offensive end of the floor shooting 57 percent and led by Martin Mitchell with 20 points.

Along with Mitchell, four Washburn players scored in double figures but it was the senior guard knocking down four of the Ichabods five three-pointers.

Despite a solid effort from the free-throw line, Northwest struggled from long range going 5-of-18 (27%) in the loss.

Northwest gets a second shot at the Ichabods as they host both Fort Hays State and Washburn next week. A Wednesday matchup vs. the Tigers followed by a Saturday matinee with Washburn starts a three-game home swing. Tipoff from Bearcat Arena on Wednesday is set for 7:30 p.m.

Northwest women come up short at No. 9 Washburn

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team’s upset bid of No. 9 Washburn came up short Saturday night as the Lady Blues held on for a 64-53 victory over the Bearcats inside Lee Arena.

The Bearcats continue to fight for their MIAA postseason lives as they fell to 11-10 on the season and 5-8 in conference action. Washburn, who has already clinched a postseason berth, holds on to the top spot in the league at 11-1 and 17-3 overall.

Entering Saturday’s game the Lady Blues ranked fourth in NCAA Division II in scoring defense as they had held their last five opponents to under 50 points.

Northwest jumped out to an early lead when a Monique Stevens three-pointer gave the Bearcats a 5-0 lead. However the Lady Blues would answer with an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the game with 14:15 left in the half.

Washburn continued to turn up the pressure as they finished the first half with a 16-4 run and took a 28-17 lead into the locker room. The Lady Blues were able to capitalize off Bearcat miscues with 15 points  off Northwest turnovers. The Bearcats managed only one point off 12 first half turnovers.

In the second half Northwest would make a late run cutting the Washburn lead to 10 with under a minute left in the game, however, Washburn was too much for the Bearcats in the end.

The Bearcats did manage to shoot 63 percent in the second half, but 24 turnovers and a 7-for-13 effort from the free-throw line were too much to overcome.

Led by Maggie Marnin with 17 points the Bearcats were the first team since Northeastern State on Jan. 16 to score at least 50 points on the Lady Blues.

Washburn was led by Laura Kinerknecht with 14 points and two rebounds. Kinerknecht also finished the evening with four of Washburn’s six three-pointers in the win.

Northwest earns rematches next week with both Washburn and Fort Hays State. Wednesday the Bearcats host the Tigers at Bearcat Arena and entertain the Lady Blues Saturday, Feb. 16. Tipoff on Wednesday is set for 5:30 p.m.
