Northwest Missouri State announces 2012 recruiting class

The Northwest Missouri State football coaches announced its 2012 class today. The list features 24 high school athletes who signed National Letters of Intent.

Northwest finished its 2011 campaign at 11-3 and returned to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the eighth consecutive season, the most of any NCAA DII team. The Bearcats also averaged an NCAA -best 50 points per game during the regular season.

The Northwest staff will add nine players from the state of Missouri, the most in this year’s class, followed by five players from Iowa and Kansas.

In addition to successful recruiting in Missouri, Northwest will add three players from Nebraska and two players from Illinois and one Texas.

“Recruiting quality student-athletes takes a great deal of time and effort,” said Dorrel, who is entering his second season at the helm of the Bearcats. “I would like to recognize the effort of our coaching staff. We made it an emphasis to recruit young men with high character, solid academic records, and great athletic ability. Our staff did a great job going to recruits’ houses and schools establishing relationships with potential student-athletes, their parents and their high school coaches. I am very appreciative of the coaches’ hard work and to them I say ‘A big thanks’.”

“Also Assistant A.D. for Compliance, Lori Hopkins, is an integral part of every student-athlete’s career at Northwest. Her efforts usually go unnoticed and she has made my life easy throughout the recruiting process and we thank her for all of her hard work.”

The academic success of the recruits also is a point of pride for the football staff. Dorrel added that 23 of the 26 recruits qualified for academic scholarships and averaged a 3.38 GPA with an average ACT score of 22.4.

Dorrel praised the staff at Northwest for their help with the recruiting process.

“Also, when a young man chooses a school, it goes beyond just football. The quality of academic opportunities, the campus, the facilities, and the current student-athletes all play a role in their decision-making process.  With that being said, we had great academic appointments with numerous departments on this campus. Multiple parents made positive comments about our professors here at Northwest. We greatly appreciate your hard work and willingness to take time out of your personal life to help us. The revamped Talent Development Center in the Library was a big hit as well. Thanks to Leslie Galbreath, Linda Standerford, and the rest of the TDC staff.”

Added Dorrel, “Walking across our campus, you can’t help but feel inspired by how well kept it

is. We have a beautiful campus and to those who take care of it, thank you. I would also like to thank custodial services. They spent a lot of time making sure everything was opened up for us and well maintained.”

Northwest men ranked again at No. 22

Northwest Missouri State returned to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 released Tuesday standing at No. 22 in the latest rankings.

The Bearcats enter their bye week at 16-3 on the season and are coming off a 75-57 win over then-No. 23 Fort Hays State. Northwest sits tied atop the MIAA standings with Central Missouri at 10-3 with a game and a half separating second-place Washburn.

After receiving votes in last week’s poll, Northwest is the highest ranked MIAA team in the NABC Top 25.

Bellamine (Ky.) remains at No. 1 followed by West Liberty (W. Va.) at No. 2.

South Central Region foe, Tarleton State climbs to No. 3 with Winona State at No. 4 and Colorado School of Mines rounding out the top five.

Other region opponents in the top 25 include Midwestern State at No. 11 and Missouri Southern at No. 23.

The Bearcats return to the hardwood Saturday as they travel to Pittsburg State for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff from John Lance Arena.

Bearcats roll to big win over Fort Hays State

The stage was set for a special afternoon for Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball program.

The school gave out 2,000 T-shirts to fans arriving at Bearcat Arena Saturday. The game was televised on MIAA TV, and the men’s team entered the game with a share of first place.

“We felt the hype all week about this game,” Northwest senior Jake Reinders said. “Coming out of that tunnel just gave you chills seeing the crowd and they were loud. That really helped us in our win tonight.”

Once the game started, the Bearcats delivered with an impressive 74-57 victory over Fort Hays State in front of 2,146 boisterous fans.

“I was happy with our execution,” Northwest coach Ben McCollum said. “I thought we really focused on what we needed to do offensively and defensively.”

Senior Kyle Haake got the festivities going with a three-pointer. A few minutes later Dillon Starzl followed with an inside bucket, giving Northwest an early lead.

“We tried to establish the low-post play early and that opens up a lot for the guards,” Reinders said. “The guards made tremendous passes and that helped us underneath the basket. It was a great job by the guards”

A little later, junior Bryston Williams knocked down a trey to give the Bearcats an 8-2.

The game went so well for the Bearcats that the first three scorers for them were not the offensive stars. Those honors belonged to Reinders who finished with 16 and junior Alex Sullivan, who came off the bench and scored 15.

“Alex plays with a lot of heart and soul,” Reinders said. “He is really passionate about the game. We have a unique team. Anybody can step up on any night and have a big game and Alex proved that tonight.”

In essence, the Bearcats turned in their typical performance. They won as a team and it is why they are now 16-3 overall and 10-3 in the MIAA and tied with Central Missouri, which also won Saturday afternoon.

Northwest never trailed against Fort Hays. The Bearcats went into halftime comfortably ahead 34-21.

“We maintained our focus,” Reinders said. “We wanted to keep them in front of us defensively. We didn’t let them have second-chance points.”

Both Reinders and Sullivan were on their way to solid games.

“This is probably one of the most fun games I’ve played this year,” Sullivan said. “I was laid back. I didn’t think too much. I just played the game and enjoyed it.”

Reinders was 3 for 4 from the field for 6 points and Sullivan hit both of his three-pointers and free throws for 8 points in the first half

“Sullivan is just a hustle guy. He just brings it,” McCollum said. “He is so physical and so tough that he changes the dynamic of our team when he comes on the floor.

“Him and DeAngelo Hailey just bring instant energy. That’s a great quality to have. We make huge runs when those two players come in.”

The Bearcats were never threatened in the second half. They maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the second half.

Fort Hays spent the bulk of the second half firing three-pointers. The Tigers made a few.

Northwest countered with Sullivan and Haake. It turned out the Bearcats were more proficient behind the arc than Fort Hays. Northwest went 8 for 17 for 47.1 percent, and Fort Hays was 9 for 22 for 36.7 percent.

“I let the offense come to me because we are a defensive oriented team,” Sullivan said. “Our offense comes from our defense. I learned this year you got to be really unselfish to win games. That’s something our team buys into.

Simply put, it was a very good game for the Bearcats and concluded a great week for them. On Wednesday, Northwest went on the road and won at Washburn, a team like Fort Hays that was trying to catch the first-place Bearcats.

Northwest now has six days off before returning to action next Saturday at Pittsburg State. The Bearcats realize they have not hit their peak. There are things they need to work on.

“We still got a long ways to go as far as getting loose balls and just a few effort plays we can improve on,” McCollum said

Northwest women lose fourth straight as they fall to Fort Hays

The Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball could not overcome a cold night from the field as Fort Hays State took a 65-42 win over the Bearcats Saturday afternoon in front of a regional TV audience.

The Bearcats were held to 42 points for the second time this season; the first was an early November trip to Northeastern State (Okla.) in the second game of the season, the same opponent for Northwest next Wednesday. Northwest fell to 4-16 on the year and 2-11 in league play as the Lady Tigers improved to 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

FHSU took a 12-2 run in the middle of the first to pull out to a 22-8 lead.

Playing a slew of reserves through the first half, the Bearcats were able to chip away at the Lady Tigers lead and trail by 10, 33-23, at the half.

However, the second half was even less generous to the Bearcats as they shot a meager 20 percent from the field. Northwest was also only able to connect on 3-of-12 from behind the three-point arc, while Fort Hays State knocked down 10 three-pointers on the afternoon.

Northwest was led by Ashley Thayer with 11 points. Thayer also knocked down all three treys for the Bearcats.

The Lady Tigers placed five players in double figures, led by Kate Lehman and Kimber Weiser with 12 points each. Lehman was also one of two Lady Tigers to record a double-double adding 10 rebounds while Katelyn Edwards tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Northwest hosts 8th-ranked Northeastern State in a non-conference match up at Bearcat Arena on Wednesday. Tip from Maryville is set for 6 p.m.

MIAA Tournament staying at Municipal through 2014

MIAA Commissioner Dr. Bob Boerigter and the city of Kansas City have announced an agreement to extend the current MIAA Basketball Championships contract and keep the event at historic Municipal Auditorium through 2014.

“I am so pleased that our CEO’s have determined that our MIAA basketball tournament will remain at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City through the 2014 season,” Boerigter said. “Our tournament here in Kansas City has proven to be popular for our alumni and fans and playing in historical municipal auditorium has been a great experience for our student athletes.”

“All of our conference university presidents are extremely pleased to extend the relationship between our conference tournament and Kansas City,” MIAA CEO Council Chair Dr. Ed Hammond added. “Municipal Auditorium has a long history of high-quality, post-season basketball play. We look forward to working with our many sponsors to continue our March tradition.”

This year’s tournament, which will take place as part of the conference’s Centennial Year celebration, is also the 10th year for the championships to be held in Kansas City.

“On behalf of my office, the city council and the citizens of this great City, I am thrilled to have the MIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship Tournaments return to Kansas City, Missouri in March, 2013 and 2014,” Kansas City mayor Sly James said. “The institution of basketball in Kansas City is a long and storied history. No City in the world has the relationship to collegiate basketballthat Kansas City does and we are glad to add our tradition by hosting this tournament at Municipal Auditorium in 2013, 2014 and beyond.”

“The announcement of the extension of the MIAA Championships is exciting news for Kansas City,” Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation President/CEO Kathy Nelson said. “We are thrilled to support the conference as they continue to hold their winter and spring championships here, some just blocks from their headquarters in downtown Kansas City.  We also look forward to the growth of the conference as they welcome four new schools this fall, making the eight championship events even more exciting for our region, all hosted right here in Kansas City.”

For the first 10 years in Kansas City, including the upcoming tournament, the MIAA Championships have been two eight-team tournaments (men’s and women’s). Six different schools have won the men’s tournament since it has been hosted at Municipal Auditorium, while two schools have combined to win the nine women’s tournaments.

Beginning with the 2012-13 season, the MIAA will have 15 member institutions, and 12 teams will qualify for the tournament. The top-4 seeds automatically advance to Kansas City, and seeds 5-12 will play an opening round of games on campus sites with the winners advancing to Kansas City to complete the final eight-team field.

The 2012 MIAA Centennial Basketball Championships will take place March 1-4 at Municipal.

Bearcats get big road win at Washburn

With the top two defensive teams on display Wednesday night, Northwest Missouri State and Washburn lived up to the billing as the Bearcats pulled out a tough, 70-63 win over the Ichabods in MIAA play.

Northwest was able to improve to 15-3 on the year and 9-3 in league play, as they closed out a three-game road swing winning 2-of-3. Washburn, who entered the night in second place, fell to 13-6 and 7-4 in the conference.

Northwest would hold a slim 64-63 lead after Bobby Chipman knocked down a free throw with 1:07 left in the game.

On the next possession, Northwest senior Jake Reinders would get fouled and sink two free throws after his 5-foot hook shot rimed out.

With 22 seconds left on the clock, Washburn would miss twice before Alex Sullivan tipped a lose rebound away from an Ichabod player all but sealing the win for the Bearcats. Washburn would be forced to foul sending DeAngelo Hailey to the free throw.

Hailey knocked down both foul shots extending the Bearcat lead to 68-63 with just nine seconds left. Hailey iced the game with a blocked shot on the ensuing Washburn possession as DeShaun Cooper corralled the loose ball with two seconds. Hailey finished the game with 14 points.

Cooper, who was then fouled, also hit both free throws giving Northwest its first win in Topeka since 2007 and ending a four-game losing streak inside Lee Arena.

It was not the ideal start for Northwest as they fell behind 7-1 to the Ichabods early on; however, the Bearcats would get the kick start they needed in the form of Kyle Haake.

Haake knocked down three from behind the three-point arc giving the Bearcats an 18-11 lead at the 9:38 mark. The senior guard would pile on 14 points in the first half to give Northwest a slim 33-32 lead at intermission.

Haake recorded only the second double-double of the year for Northwest finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwest overcame 16 turnovers forced by Washburn and did so by shooting an impressive 52 percent from the field on 20-of-38 shooting.

The Bearcats also hit 17-of-18 free throws in the second half and got 28 points from their bench in the win.

Jake Reinders led Northwest with 16 points only missing one shot from the field and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Will McNeill finished with a game-high 24 points for the Ichabods as Chipman tallied a double-double also with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwest will return home and close out the month of January on Saturday as they host No. 23 Fort Hays State in a Whiteout at Bearcat Arena. The game is slated as the MIAA TV Game of the Week with a 3 p.m. tip. More information on how to view Saturday’s game can be found here.
