Griffon men fall at home to Bearcats, 64-53

The Missouri Western men’s basketball team struggled in the opening game of the 2012 season falling 64-53 against Northwest Missouri State in the fieldhouse. The Griffons battled all night but it wasn’t enough at the end falling to 6-6 overall and 1-5 in MIAA play.

The Bearcats came out on fire opening up an early 17-4 lead after a Jake Reinders jumper with 10:39 to play. Western held Northwest to just nine points the rest of the half cutting the Bearcat lead to one at 23-22 after a Reed Mells three. Kyle Haake hit a huge three at the end of the half giving Northwest the 26-22 lead at the break.

Mells led the way off the bench with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. Western shot 34.6-percent (9-26) in the half. Northwest was led by Haake with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting. The Bearcats made 9-of-16 field goal attempts for 56.3-percent.

The second half began like the first as the Bearcats jumped out to a 12 point lead at 37-25 lead after DeShaun Cooper hit a layup with 15:34 to play. The Griffons once again battled back cutting the Northwest led to four at 45-41 after consecutive three’s by James Harris and TJ Johnson with 8:39 to play.

The Bearcats outscored Western 19-12 the rest of the way improving to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play. The Bearcats have won the last four games against Western.

Western finished shooting 34.0-percent (18-53) from the field but made just 9-of-15 free throw attempts. Western got outrebounded 35-to-23 and got outscored 16-6 in the paint. Alex Tuluka-Mfumupembe hit four three’s for the second consecutive game finishing with 12 points of the bench. Mells finished with 10 points.

Northwest finished making 21-of-38 field goals and 16-of-21 free throws. Cooper and Haake finished with 21 and 20 points respectively while Jake Reinders dumped in nine points and snared eight rebounds.

The Griffons return home on Saturday, January 7 to take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers in MIAA action. Game time is set for 3:30 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse. This will mark the second of a three game home stand for the Griffons. If you can make the game listen to all the action on 680 AM KFEQ.

Western women snap six-game skid with win over Northwest

A 20-6 second half run helped the Griffon women to a 62-51 victory over rival Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday night in the fieldhouse. Western snapped a six game losing streak earning their first MIAA victory of the season. Brittany Griswold finished with a game high 17 points as Western improves to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in MIAA action.

For the fourth time this season the Griffons took a lead into the half. Western shot 34.4-percent (11-32) in the first frame taking a 34-26 lead into the locker room. The last time Western led at the half was on December 7 against Missouri Southern by a score of 31-27.

The Griffons led by as many as 12 points at 30-18 after a Griswold jumper with 3:25 to play. The Bearcats closed on an 8-4 run cutting the lead to eight at the half. Giswold led the charge for Western with nine points while Jessica Koch and Alicia Bell dumped in eight apiece.

The Bearcats were led by Tara Roach and Maggie Marnin as they dumped in eight points apiece in the first half.

Western came out on fire in the second half scoring the first nine points of the frame opening up a 19 point lead at 45-26 after two Griswold free throws with 17:34 to play. The Griffons continued to play well pushing their lead to 24 two different times before the Bearcats closed on a 19-6 run cutting the Griffons final lead to 11.

Koch finished with her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Bell finished with 10 points while the Griffons outrebounded the Bearcats 51-46 in the game. Western also had 24 points in the paint to Northwest’s 12 and 23 points off 20 Bearcat turnovers.

Northwest drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in MIA A play. The Bearcats were led by Marnin and Roach as they dumped in 11 apiece.

Griffons finish No. 18 in final AFCA poll; Northwest 5th

The Missouri Western football team finished the 2011 football season being ranked 18th in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll which was released Monday morning. The Griffons were ranked as high as 16th in the nation going into the playoff contest with the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.

Western finished the season going 9-3 which ties the school record for most victories in a season. Western also made their second straight playoff appearance and third in school history.

Also, Northwest Missouri State finished fifth in the final AFCA Division II poll.

Northwest finished the season 11-3 earning its eighth straight NCAA playoff appearance, the longest current streak in NCAA DII football. The Bearcats also led the nation in points per game during the regular season averaging 53 points per game including five games of 62 points or more. Northwest holds the record for being ranked the most times in the AFCA Division II Poll at 139 weeks out of a possible 148 since 2000, the first year of the NCAA DII Coaches’ Poll.

Bearcats lose first game at No. 15 Fort Hays State

Off to their best start since the 2001-02 season, Northwest Missouri State was handed their first loss of the year by 15th-ranked Fort Hays State as the Tigers took an 83-64 decision in MIAA action Saturday at Gross Coliseum.

The Bearcats first loss moves their record to 9-1 on the year and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Tigers also improved to 9-1 and 3-1 in league action and move into a three-way tie atop the league standings with Northwest and Missouri Southern.

The Tigers raced out to an early lead in the first half, leading by as many as 15 points. FHSU would take a 39-25 lead at the break.

Both teams would battle back-and-forth in the second half as the Bearcats slowly chipped away at the Tiger lead pulling with 11 after a DeAngelo Hailey three-pointer made it 61-50 at the 8:33 mark in the second half.

However, from there it would be all Tigers as they extended their lead to as many as 21 points.

Northwest would get out-rebounded by FHSU by 35-24 margin, but it was 14 second-chance points that helped propel the Tigers. Northwest only managed three second-chance points in the loss.

Kyle Haake led Northwest with 17 points, as he knocked down a trio of three-pointers. The Bearcats made 7-of-9 treys in the second half.

Matt Simmons and Moses Dayee led all players with 19 points each for No. 15 Fort Hays.

Northwest will close out the calendar year on Dec. 30 as they travel to Lincoln in MIAA action. Tip from Jefferson City is set for 7 p.m.

Northwest women stay winless in MIAA with loss at Hays

Northwest Missouri State shot a season low from the field as they fell on Saturday to Fort Hays State 65-45 in MIAA action from Gross Coliseum.

Northwest falls to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in league play as FHSU improved to 10-1 on the year and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will have one more opportunity to pick up their first conference win before the New Year and snap a six-game losing streak as they travel to Lincoln on Dec. 30.

FHSU never trailed despite the Bearcats hanging close through the first 15 minutes of the game. A three-pointer from FHSU’s Melissa Nelson pushed the Tigers lead to 11 with 3:47 left in the first half and would never look back.

The Bearcats shot a season low 28 percent from the field and failed to make a three-pointer going 0-for-10 on the afternoon. It was the second time this season Northwest did not connect from long-range and finished with a season low seven turnovers in the loss.

It was also the second time the Bearcats did not register a player with double-figure points. They were also out-rebounded by FHSU by a 56-38 margin.

Northwest was led by freshman Maggie Marnin with nine points and senior Tara Roach with eight.

Katelyn Edwards led all players with 17 points in the Tigers win.

NWMSU’s Kilgore, Williams named to AP Little All-America Team

A pair of Northwest Missouri State football players added to their accolades being named to the Associated Press Little All-America Team Friday, as senior Chad Kilgore and junior Rod Williams each earned honors.

Both helped lead Northwest to its eighth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance and an 11-3 record with a National Quarterfinal finish.

Kilgore was named First-Team AP Little All-America linebacker after leading the Bearcats in tackles for a third straight season, finishing with 123 stops — 11 for loss. The 230-pound weak-side backer made his first appearance on the AFCA All-America squad earlier this week after earning second-team honors by another publication as a junior.

Kilgore’s 392 career tackles are the fourth-most in program history.

Williams a native from Grandview, Mo., earned second-team accolades on the offensive line after being named to the CoSIDA First-Team All-America Team earlier this week. The junior helped pace a Bearcat offense that led the nation in scoring with 48 points per game and was ranked fourth in total offense. Northwest also had two running backs rush for a combined 2,204 yards.

Three Bearcats earn All-America honors

Junior offensive lineman Rod Williams highlighted three Northwest Missouri State players that earned All-America honors released Wednesday afternoon by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America.

Williams earned First-Team All-America accolades, while he was joined on the Second-Team by senior offensive lineman Cody Johnson, and linebacker Chad Kilgore. Williams and Johnson helped a Bearcat offense that led the nation in scoring with 48 points per game and was ranked fourth in total offense. Northwest also had two running backs rush for a combined 2,204 yards.

Northwest’s Kilgore earns All-America honors

Northwest Missouri State senior linebacker, Chad Kilgore was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America Team announced on Tuesday.

Kilgore led the Bearcats in tackles for the second straight season with 123 which was third best in the MIAA. The Orrick, Mo., native also led Northwest with 11.5 tackles for loss and finished with five games of 11 or more tackles. He finished with 2.5 sacks and one interception on the season as well.

The senior helped lead Northwest to the playoffs all four season and the eighth consecutive overall. The Bearcats finished the season 11-3 falling in the National Quarterfinals to Pittsburg State, who will play in the National Championship game this Saturday. Kilgore and the Bearcats claimed the 2009 national title as a sophomore starter on the Northwest defense.

With Kilgore’s honor, Northwest has the longest current streak with a player selected to the AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team at 16 straight seasons, from 1996 to present. The Bearcats have been represented 17 times by 13 different players, fourth most in NCAA Division II.

The AFCA’s Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s nine districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.

Northwest announces 2012 football schedule

Northwest Missouri State has filled open dates for its 2012 and 2013 football schedule that were created when the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) left the MIAA.  The 2012 football schedule will feature a season-opening game against the East Central (Okla.) Tigers at Bearcat Stadium.

The opening date has not yet been set with the possibility of a Thursday (Aug. 30) or Saturday (Sept. 1) game still to be determined.  The 2013 opener will feature Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State University.  SVSU was a NCAA playoff qualifier this season.

The Bearcats will host five home games during the 2012 season and six home games in 2013. .

“We feel very fortunate to fill these open dates and have complete schedules for the next two seasons,” said Northwest Director of Athletics Wren Baker.  “Our administrative team has worked diligently to make sure we have quality D2 opponents while also having the optimum number of home games.  Game days in Maryville are important to our fans and local businesses.”

The landscape of the MIAA will also drastically change as the league expands to 15 teams with the addition of Central Oklahoma, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney, and Northeastern State (Okla.) for the 2012 season. Southwest Baptist also returns to the league as a football member after playing as an independent for the last three seasons.

The five dates fans can see the Bearcats in Maryville, include Sept. 15 against Fort Hays State and Sept. 29 against Northeastern State, which will also be Family Weekend.  The Bearcats close out the final two games of the season at home in November starting with Emporia State on Nov. 3 for Homecoming and the regular season finale against rival Missouri Western on Nov. 10.

Northwest will travel to Central Missouri and Nebraska-Kearney on Sept. 8 and 22, respectively. In October the Bearcats will travel on Oct. 6 to Central Oklahoma, Oct. 20 to Missouri Southern, and will be at Washburn on Oct. 27.

The Bearcats will host their annual spring game April 14 at Bearcat Stadium. Time and details of the spring game will be released at a later date.

NWMSU’s Eiberger earns All-Region honors

Senior Tammie Eiberger added to her list of accolades as the first player in Northwest Missouri State history to earn NSCAA Third Team All-Region honors.

Eiberger helped the Bearcats to a 10-7-2 record and the first postseason win in school history. The Michigan native also led Northwest in goals (11), assists (8), and points (30) as she also set the single season mark in each category. She logged over 1,200 minutes in her only season for the Bearcats after transferring from Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State.

The Bearcats earned a spot in the MIAA Postseason Tournament knocking off Emporia State in the first-round before falling to No. 10 Central Missouri in the quarterfinals. The 10 wins were also second most in program history.
