Northwest women lose MIAA opener at home to Emporia State

Early in the second half Wednesday evening at Bearcat Arena, Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team faced a 22-point deficit against Emporia State.

The outcome was pretty much decided in the MIAA opener for both teams. It would have been easy for Northwest to throw up wild three-point shots in a desperate attempt to mount a comeback.

Instead, the Bearcats stayed in control and fed the ball inside to 6-foot-3 freshman Maggie Marnin and junior twins Alexis and Candace Boeh.

Although Northwest wound up losing 68-56, the way the Bearcats worked on establishing a post offense should pay off later in conference play.

“It wasn’t really the game plan, but we discovered it as we went along,” Northwest coach Gene Steinmeyer said.

In the first half, the Bearcats only consistent offense came from Candace Boeh, who made four of seven shots from the field. Her offense was not enough to keep pace with the Hornets.

Emporia State held a 26-13 lead with 6:56 left in the first half and went into halftime ahead 34-24.

The Bearcats got off to a rocky start to begin the second half and saw their deficit grow to 48-26 in less than 5 minutes.

At that point, the game was in jeopardy of turning into a full-fledge blowout. Marnin, who missed all four of her shot attempts in the first half, stopped a 9-0 run by Emporia State with an inside basket.

“She got muscled in the first half, even though the other kid was a freshman,” Steinmeyer said. “She was a lot stronger than Maggie. In the second half, Maggie learned to adjust.

“Maggie is going to get better every game. I have nothing but great things to say about Maggie. You know what is great about it is the twins, even though it is cutting into their playing time, they are being great teammates and helping each other out. I appreciate that, too.”

Marnin said the Alexis and Candace have been a big help. She was amazed at the way they played Wednesday night. Candace was five for 11 from the field and finished with a team-high 11 points, and Alexis made three of her five shots and finished with six points. Marnin also scored six points.

“Those girls are the sweetest girls around,” Marnin said. “But when you get them in a basketball game, they get you ready. They played so awesome tonight. I don’t know if it was a twin thing, but they had it going on. They knew what to do and they finished. They are just the best.

“I was definitely nervous. I heard the MIAA is unlike any other conference. Tonight, I realized that. My teammates were cheering me on and that really helps.”

Throughout much of the second half it was clear the Bearcats were going to make a concerted effort the push the ball inside.

During a 7-minute stretch, Marnin scored two more field goals as Northwest closed to 53-36.

“I think she (Marnin) did really well,” Candace Boeh said. “As a freshman it is hard in the MIAA because it is really tough. She held her ground. We just hope to get better every day.

“I think it is really important to establish an inside game. It gives our really good outside shooters an opportunity.”

The scoring from the post coupled with the inside drives by senior guard Abby Henry allowed Northwest to basically match Emporia State scoring over the final 15 minutes of the game.

Another positive sign for the Bearcats was the all out hustle until the very end. A perfect example of it occurred with just over 2 minutes left and Northwest trailing 68-51.

Alexis Boeh and Henry cornered Rachel Hanf and stole the ball. Senior Tara Roach got the ball inside and missed a shot. She continued to battle for the ball, got the offensive rebound and scored.

In the final 3 minutes of the second half, the Bearcats scored the last seven points.

“I think it is really important to never give up,” Candace Boeh said. “In MIAA games it is never easy. But if we continue to work hard and never give up, good things will come.”

Northwest rallies past Midwestern State to advance to Quarterfinals

With all the history that surrounds the No. 10 Northwest Missouri State football team, the Bearcats pulled out arguably one of the most thrilling playoff wins Saturday knocking off No. 2 Midwestern State 38-31 in overtime of NCAA Division II second-round action.

Blustery conditions caused a limited passing attack from both teams who were also top rated offensive squads in NCAA II. The Bearcats win improved their record to 11-2 on the year as they advance to the NCAA National Quarterfinal.

Trevor Adams found Kyle Kilgore in the corner of the end zone from 13-yards out to strike first in overtime. It was the third touchdown of the day for the duo and eighth of the season for Kilgore.

The vaunted Northwest defense locked-in much as they had the entire second half. After a tackle for a loss by Josh Lorenson the Mustangs would keep the chains moving on a 4th-and-1. However, the Bearcats would force another fourth down as this time Brandon Kelsey’s pass to David Little skipped across the turf, giving Northwest their second straight come-from-behind win.

The Bearcats briefly led to start as they started with the strong winds at their back, taking a 10-7 lead. Matching scores with Northwest, the Mustangs started rolling with their top ranked offense that entered the game averaging 548 yards per game.

Midwestern State (11-1) scored three times in the second quarter to run out to a 28-10 lead. MSU only needed five passing attempts on the three drives getting scores from Keidrick Jackson and Lester Bush. Jackson broke free on a 4th-and-2 to scramble 32-yards giving the Mustangs the momentum.

Jackson would finish with 184 yards on 29 carries for the Mustangs.

Northwest would get into the end zone to close out the first half when James Franklin found pay dirt from 6-yards out. The Bearcats would ride Franklin all afternoon as he added a second touchdown jaunt later with 4:56 left in the game to pull Northwest even at 31-31.

In addition to Franklin’s two scores he finished with 146 yards rushing on 26 carries marking his third consecutive game rushing over the century mark.

Led by DJ Gnader the Bearcats only allowed 81 yards rushing from the Mustangs in the second half. Gnader finished with a game high 15 tackles and another important tackle for a loss on the Mustangs final drive of regulation.

The Mustangs would miss a 27-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in regulation. MSU marched into the red zone much as they had in the first half before settling for a field goal on third-down. Greg Saladino hooked the try wide left as the Bearcats took a knee to head to overtime.

Adams had opened the fourth quarter scoring with a 6-yd toss to Kilgore as Franklin’s second touchdown run came just a little over two minutes later. Despite the strong winds Adams finished with 131 on 15 of 25 passing and 3 touchdown passes.

Northwest travels to Pittsburg State next Saturday in an NCAA National Quarterfinal matchup.

Northwest women fall to Hillsdale in Hawaii

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats could not find the magic two nights in a row as they fell short 70-64 to Hillsdale on the final day of the Oahu Classic.

The Bearcats fell to 2-4 on the year as they now turn their attention to MIAA play. Northwest opens with perennial powers Emporia State on Wednesday followed by Washburn on Saturday, both at Bearcat Arena.

Ashley Thayer led the Bearcats in scoring for a second straight night with 16 points. She knocked down four three-pointers going 4 of 8 in the loss. She was joined by Shelly Martin who added 16 points of her own.

The Bearcats fell cold in the second half only shooting 38 percent over the final 20 minutes despite being tied with just over four minutes to play.

Meridee Scott hit a three-pointer with 4:32 left to tie the game 63-63, but Hillsdale would answer with a three of their own from Lea Jones to regain the lead. Scott again finished in double figures with 13.

Northwest would only manage one more point over the final four minutes of the game on a free throw from Maggie Marnin at the 3:21 mark. Marnin was solid again for the Bearcats finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Bearcats were under the foul limit, but three consecutive fouls got Hillsdale to the line. The Chargers would go 1 for 2 to increase their lead by six as three-pointers from Thayer and Scott would come up short in the final 30 seconds of play.

Marissa DeMott led all players with 21 points for Hillsdale in the win.

Western lets lead slip away in playoff loss to Northwest

For the second consecutive season the Missouri Western football bowed out of the NCAA Division II Nation Playoffs against rival Northwest Missouri State in the opening round. Western fell 35-29 finishing the season with a 9-3 record. Nine wins ties a single season record for the Griffons.

Things started the way any team would want as Western forced three Bearcat turnovers on Northwest’s first three possessions. The first play from scrimmage for the Bearcats was a backwards pass by Trevor Adams which was picked up by Ben Jackson and returned 38 yards to the Bearcat one yard line. The very next play resulted in a Travis Partridge touchdown run putting Western up 7-0 just 29 seconds into the game.

Cody Kramer intercepted an Adams pass on the next possession which resulted in a 58 yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein. The field goal tied his previous record which he set on November 5 against Northwest. The next possession Adams threw a pick six to Western’s Shane Simpson giving the Griffons the 16-0 lead after the Zuerlein missed extra point. The Bearcats calmed down and on their next possession Adams hit David Mosely for a 51 yard touchdown cutting Western’s lead to 16-7 just four minutes and 27 second into the game.

The pace slowed down the rest of the half as Zuerlein nailed 57 and 52 yard field goals putting Western up 22-7 heading into the break. Western was held to 80 yards on 30 plays in the first frame with Michael Hill rushing 10 times for 35 yards. Partridge completed 6-of-14 passes for 47 yards while Tyron Crockum had three receptions for 32 yards. Tom Madget led the defense with six first half tackles.

Northwest had 190 yards on 39 plays with Adams rushing six times for 28 yards. He completed 13-of-23 passes for 138 yards with Mosley catching five passes for 80 yards. DJ Gnader led the way with five tackles and one sack.

The Bearcats held the Griffons on the opening possession of the second half stopping a fake punt opportunity by Reggie Jordan. Northwest went 46 yards on four plays with James Franklin scampering in from 35 yards out cutting the Griffon lead to 22-14 with 12:18 to play. Western responded going 80 yards on nine plays in 3:54 with Derek Libby taking a reverse 38 yards for the touchdown giving Western a 29-14 lead.

The rest of the game belonged to the Bearcats scoring 21 unanswered points earning the six point victory and improving to 10-2 on the season.

Western finished with 186 yards with 93 on the ground and through the air. Hill rushed 21 times for 65 yards finishing the season with 1,305 yards rushing. Partridge completed 10-of-23 passes with four going to Crockum for 41 yards. Scott Groner punted seven times for an average of 51.9 yards per punt with a long of 80 and three inside the 20. Jack Long finished with a career high 13 tackles with six being solo.

Northwest finished with 455 yards with 248 coming through the air and 207 on the ground. Franklin finished with 111 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns while Adams rushed 15 times on 78 carries. Adams completed 19-of-33 passes for 182 yards with Mosley catching six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Taylor Pierce caught four passes for 89 yards and one touchdown. Bearcats stay unbeaten with victory over William Jewell

Northwest Missouri State senior forward Jake Reinders was the only Bearcat to score in double figures Saturday evening against William Jewell.

Northwest needed Reinders’ inside scoring, but the reason the Bearcats pulled out a 49-37 victory over William Jewell in the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic at MWSU Fieldhouse was their defense.

“Our coach says we want to be the best defensive team in the league and the best defensive team in the nation,” said Northwest senior guard Kyle Haake. “That’s what we take pride in.”

In the first half, the Bearcats held William Jewell to 27 percent shooting from the field and took a 22-14 lead into halftime.

“Our guys have bought into getting stops and that’s the most important thing,” Northwest coach Ben McCollum said. “Our guys have bought into fewer minutes so we can stay fresh and defend. That’s an important attribute of a quality team.”

Reinders made three of four field goals in the first half. At halftime, Reinders, who is 6-foot-9, mentioned to his teammates that he had a shorter player guarding him.

His teammates listened. They fed him the ball a few more times. He went 4-for-5 in the second half and finished the game with 16 points.

“He’s a scraper,” Haake said. “He gets those garbage points.”

Northwest continued to play solid defense in the second half. With 8 minutes left, the Bearcats held a 39-25 lead.

“We are a pretty smart team, an aware team and we took advantage of their weaknesses,” Reinders said. “William Jewell has great competitors. They are going to do well in their conference.”

Because of their stingy defense, Northwest never allowed William Jewell to get on any scoring runs.

It was not a perfect game for the Bearcats, but they are off to a perfect start. Northwest is 4-0. The Bearcats have held its opponents to below 40 percent shooting in three of four games.

Although the offense isn’t clicking the way McCollum wants right now, the team is showing they can get offense from numerous sources.

Junior DeShaun Cooper had a tough game shooting, making 2 of 11 shots from the field. It didn’t prevent the Bearcats from getting a double-digit victory.

Cooper, though, showed his value without scoring. Late in the second half, Cooper drove the lane and then passed the ball to sophomore forward Dillon Starzl, who scored an easy layup that gave Northwest a 47-32 lead.

Simply put, it was a very good early season win. William Jewell is always fundamentally strong. On Friday, William Jewell nearly beat Missouri Western before falling 65-64.

“This means a lot,” Haake said of the 4-0 start. “We are building confidence as a team. We are learning how to play together and the roles everybody has to play and to trust each other.”

Northwest women beat Missouri Valley for first win

Freshman Maggie Marnin recorded her first double-double as Northwest Missouri State picked up their first win of the season over Missouri Valley 70-61 on Saturday night to close out the Winstead-Reeves Classic.

Northwest (1-3) has seen steady improvement in their first four games, but have lacked the final result. Saturday night the Bearcats put together two halves as four Bearcats scored in double figures to drop Missouri Valley (2-6) in non-conference tournament action.

Marnin has showed continued improvement in the post for the Bearcats as she scored 10 points and added 14 rebounds -10 defensive rebounds- and four blocks in the win. Marnin also earned a spot on the all-Tournament team with Tara Roach.

Roach also added 10 points and was again one rebound shy of her first double-double finishing with nine.

Northwest took a slim 32-27 lead into halftime, and came out firing in the second shooting 91 percent from the free throw line. The Bearcats would extend their to 20 with just over 5 minutes to play as Ashleigh Nelson completed a three-point play at the free throw line.

Nelson and Shelly Martin tied for a game high 15 points each as the pair also knocked down two three-pointers each.

Northwest continues tournament action as they head west for the Oahu Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Bearcats open play on Thanksgiving taking on St. Augustine’s followed by a Friday matchup with Hillsdale.
