Bearcat volleyball loses in five sets to No. 19 Central Oklahoma

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State Bearcat volleyball team dug itself a two-set hole, rallied to force a fifth only to see the No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos hold on for a 16-14 win in the decisive set.

UCO (18-4 overall, 6-2 MIAA) won by set scores of 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 16-14. Northwest falls to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set and never trailed winning it, 25-17. Northwest committed nine errors and hit .116, while UCO had 15 kills and hit .406. Northwest’s Maddy Bruder carried the offensive load in the set with seven kills.

UCO cooled off in the second set, but Northwest was plagued by 10 attack errors. UCO hit .182, while Northwest hit .100. Hallie Sidney tallied five kills in the set to lead the Bearcats. UCO’s Taylor Bevis netted seven kills in the set.

Northwest finally found its groove in the third set. UCO had taken a 16-11 lead before the Bearcats came charging back. The Bearcats ran off five straight points to knot the set at 16-16. UCO came back to score the next two points before Northwest used a 5-1 run to take a 21-19 lead. Northwest hit .333 in the third with 17 kills and two errors, while UCO hit .231 with 18 kills and six errors. Sidney notched seven kills to lead the Bearcats in the third.

The Bearcats opened up a 14-9 lead in the fourth only to see the Bronchos knot it up at 19-19. The Bearcats failed to yield and knotted the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 victory. Bruder had six kills as the Bearcats hit .209.

UCO took a 10-7 advantage in the decisive fifth set. The Bronchos had two set points at 14-12 but back-to-back kills from Sidney evened the set at 14-14. UCO managed to score the final two points and took the match with a 16-14 triumph.

Northwest will be back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday in Bearcat Arena against Pittsburg State.

Northwest soccer gets blanked by Nebraska-Kearney

The University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers beat the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 1-0 at Foster Field in Kearney.

The Lopers scored their lone goal on an unassisted goal by Maddie Love in the 59th minute. Northwest goalkeeper Alexis Serna-Castillo had 5 saves on the night and UNK goalkeeper Allie Prososki had 4.

The Lopers are now 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. Northwest falls to 1-9 and 0-4 in the MIAA.

The Bearcats will head to Hays, Kan. to play Fort Hays State Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Northwest soccer gets shutout by Emporia State

The Northwest Missouri State soccer team lost to the Emporia State Hornets 3-0 at Bearcat Pitch Sunday. The score was tied 0-0 going into the 76th minute but a flurry of late goals allowed the Hornets to pull off the victory.

The first goal was scored at 76:20 on a penalty kick by Tanna Benefiel. The second goal was an own goal put in by the Bearcats. The final goal was scored by Jacki Martinek and was assisted by Kennedy Hoffman.

The Bearcats are back in action Friday Oct. 5 at University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Bearcats blank Emporia State 41-0

MARYVILLE, Missouri, — The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats returned to their winning ways with a 41-0 victory over Emporia State after an almost two hour weather delay. The attendance was 6,141 people for Military Appreciation Day.

Northwest’s offense piled up 450 yards of total offense, 267 through the air and 183 on the ground. The defense held the Hornets to only 194 yards of total offense, 151 yards passing and 43 yards rushing. The Bearcats only gave up 11 first downs compared to their 18.

Northwest scored 27 of their 41 in the first half on three passing touchdowns by Braden Wright, including two over 70 yards to Alec Tatum (72 yds) and Jaime Taylor (80 yards).The Bearcats added one rushing touchdown by Josh Caldwell to end the half.

Wright had one rushing touchdown in the second half to finish with four total touchdowns and 312 total yards on the day. The last touchdown was scored by running back Brody McMahon from one yard out. Alec Tatum finished with three catches and 105 yards.

Northwest has six tackles for loss on the day, including two sacks by sophomore Sam Roberts. Sam Roberts and Jackson Barnes led the team in tackles with 7 total on the game. The Bearcats defense also forced seven 3-and-outs on the day and four turnover on downs.

The Bearcats will be back in action next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan. to face the undefeated Pittsburg State Gorillas.

Northwest volleyball falls in five sets to No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The No. 4-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers escaped Bearcat Arena with a five-set win over the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. The Lopers won by set scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-11.

UNK extended its win streak to six in a row, while snapping Northwest’s nine-match winning streak. UNK moves to 19-1 overall and 6-1 MIAA play. Northwest falls to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in MIAA action.

Bearcat sophomore Hallie Sidney recorded a career-high 27 kills. Sidney’s 27-kill performance tied for the eighth-best kill effort in school history.

Senior Olivia Nowakowski tied for the eighth-most digs in a five-set match in Bearcat history with 35 against the Lopers.

Northwest jumped out to a two-set lead behind the play of Sidney, who tallied 14 kills in the opening two sets.

UNK used a balanced offensive attack with Julianne Jackson (13 kills) and Emma Benton (11 kills) to rally from the two-set deficit.

The Bearcats recorded a season highs in digs (114) and kills (71).

Northwest will remain at home and play a pair of matches in Bearcat Arena coming up this Friday vs. Central Oklahoma (6 p.m.) and Saturday vs. Pittsburg State (3 p.m.)

Bearcat volleyball sweeps Fort Hays State for ninth straight win

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team ran its win streak to nine in a row with a decisive 3-0 victory over Fort Hays State Friday in Bearcat Arena. Northwest won by set scores of 25-18, 25-11, 25-17.

Northwest (14-3 overall, 6-0 MIAA) hit .375 and posted an 80.9 sideout percentage in the sweep. Fort Hays State (6-12 overall, 0-6 MIAA) hit .141 for the match.

Senior Maddy Bruder and sophomore Hallie Sidney provided the offensive punch against the Tigers. Bruder had a match-high 15 kills (.438), while Sidney added 14 kills (.467). Sophomore Maddy Ahrens tallied 42 assists. Senior Olivia Nowakoski paced the defense with 13 digs.

Northwest jumped out to an 11-5 advantage in the opening set and never looked back in a 25-18 win. The Bearcats hit .318 in the opening set with 17 kills to go against three attack errors. Senior Sofia Schleppenbach went for five kills in five attempts in the first set.

The Bearcats rolled to a 25-11 triumph in the second set. The Bearcats opened up a 17-5 lead. Northwest pounded out a .522 hitting percentage with 14 kills and two errors, while holding Fort Hays State to .000 attack percentage with seven kills and seven errors. Bruder went 6-for-7 in kills in the second.

Northwest closed out its 13th sweep of the season with a 25-17 triumph in the third set. Fort Hays State trailed 14-13 before Northwest compiled a 6-1 run to open up a 20-14 lead. The Bearcats rode Sidney in the final set with a six kills.

Northwest will return to its home floor Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against Nebraska-Kearney. Admission is free.

Northwest soccer gets blanked by Washburn

The Washburn Ichabods defeated the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats at Bearcat Pitch, 2-0.

The Bearcats were able to create some scoring opportunities with 10 shots on target but Whitney Bockover was there for Washburn to save them.

The Ichabods’s goals were both scored by Olivia Grasso one in the first half assisted by Ellie Karloff and the other in the second half which was assisted by Mackenzie Hieman.

The Bearcats will play at home again on Sunday against the Emporia State Hornets starting at 1 p.m.

Northwest’s Althoff named semifinalist for William V. Campbell Trophy

IRVING, Texas (Sept. 26, 2018) – Recognizing one of the most impressive groups of scholar-athletes in the history of college football, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) proudly announced today the 179 semifinalists, including Northwest Missouri State senior linebacker Ben Althoff, for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy®. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Fidelity Investments is a proud partner of the Campbell Trophy®.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 31, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 60th NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 29th William V. Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

Northwest Missouri State is represented by senior linebacker Ben Althoff (Palmyra, Missouri/Palmyra HS). Althoff carries a 3.87 grade point average with a double major in agronomy and agricultural business. Althoff led the Bearcats in tackles in 2017 for a defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, total defense and third-down conversion defense. In 2018, Althoff has helped Northwest to a 3-1 start and No. 17 national ranking in the AFCA Div. II Coaches Top 25. Althoff is a captain on this year’s Bearcat football squad.

Althoff has participated in a a local Maryville community spring yard clean up. He has volunteered at the courthouse for landscape work. He has served lunch at St. Gregory’s Catholic School to students. He helped paint the hallways at Eugene Field Elementary Schools. He has served as a guest speaker at the 2018 Wilderness Camping and Retreat Center Sports Camps.
“These 179 impressive candidates truly represent the scholar-athlete ideal,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, whose sons Peyton (Campbell Trophy® winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “For 60 years, the NFF National Scholar-Athlete program has showcased more than 800 college football players who have been successful on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. This year’s semifinalists further illustrate the power of our great sport in developing the next generation of influential leaders.”

Named in honor of the late Bill Campbell, former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF’s Gold Medal, the Campbell Trophy® is a 25-pound bronze trophy and increases the amount of the recipient’s grant by $7,000 for a total postgraduate scholarship of $25,000. This year’s postgraduate scholarships will push the program’s all-time distribution to more than $11.5 million.

Northwest’s Achengli earns MIAA cross country honor

For the second time in as many weeks the Northwest Missouri State Bearcat cross country program has had a student-athlete named the MIAA athlete of the week.

Junior Karim Achengli (Adra, Spain/Iowa Central CC) placed 12th overall out of 441 runners at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Achengli ran a time of 24:46.2 on the 8,000 meter course.

Northwest soccer falls to No. 1 Central Missouri

No. 1 Central Missouri defeated the Northwest Missouri State soccer team Sunday 4-1 at Bearcat Pitch. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, then the Jennies turned up the pressure in the second half.

The Jennies got on the board first on a goal by Makayla Toth, which was assisted by Jada Scott in the 32nd minute. The Bearcats tied it up in the 40th minute on a goal by Joanna Shaw assisted by Emily Madden. The Jennies’ Skylar Drum scored the second goal off an assist by Courtney Killian in the 52nd minute. The Jennies’ last two goals were scored by Jada Scott and assisted by Makayla Toth in the 60th and 72nd minute.

The Bearcats play next at Bearcat Pitch Friday Sept. 28 against Washburn.
