No. 4 Bearcats get upset at Central Oklahoma

EDMOND, Oklahoma – Quarterback Chandler Garrett passed for four touchdowns and Central Oklahoma scored its first win over Northwest Missouri State since 1992 in a 31-21 contest on Saturday at Wantland Stadium.

Garrett passed for 274 yards on 17-of-33 passing. UCO had a pair of receivers surpass the 100-yard mark as Dustin Basks (105) and L’liott Curry (103) each went over the century mark.

Wright was 25-of-52 passing for 241 yards and a touchdown. Wright also rushed for a team-best 43 yards and a score. Cody Massey caught five passes for 64 yards. Austen Eskew notched two quarterback sacks and Jack Richards secured a team-best 10 tackles.

Northwest scored 18 fourth-quarter points but could not overcome a 28-3 deficit through three quarters.

Parker Sampson knocked in a pair of field goals to go along with a touchdown pass and run from quarterback Braden Wright to account for all the Bearcat scoring in the game.

Northwest will return home to play at Bearcat Stadium next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the Emporia State Hornets.

Northwest volleyball downs SBU in four sets to extend winning streak

BOLIVAR, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team secured its eighth straight win with a 3-1 victory at Southwest Baptist Saturday afternoon. Northwest won by set scores of 25-21, 25-15, 19-25, 25-17.

Northwest moved its season mark to 13-3 and stayed perfect in MIAA action at 5-0. SBU fell to 4-14 overall and 0-5 in league play.

The eight-match win streak ties for the sixth-longest win streak in school history and is the longest win streak for Northwest since its 15-game win streak in the 2016 season.

Northwest enjoyed a 13-10 kill advantage in the first set in scoring a 25-21 victory.

The visitors simply could not miss in the second set as Northwest hit .571 with 16 kills and no attack errors. Northwest cruised to a 25-15 triumph to take a 2-0 set lead in the match.

SBU bounced with a 25-19 win in the third set. It was the first time in eight matches that Northwest had dropped a set. Northwest hit .043 in the third set with 10 kills and eight errors.

Northwest was able to close it out in the fourth set with a 25-17 triumph. Northwest held SBU to a .000 hitting percentage in the fourth. SBU had six kills and six attack errors.

Northwest will return home to Bearcat Arena for matches against Fort Hays State (Fri., 6 p.m.) and Nebraska-Kearney (Sat., 6:30 p.m.)

Bearcat volleyball rolls past Southern to extend win streak to seven

JOPLIN, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team ran its win streak to seven in a row with yet another 3-0 sweep. This time, Northwest knocked off the Missouri Southern State Lions on Friday. Northwest won by set scores of 25-11, 25-23, 26-24.

Northwest (12-3 overall, 4-0 MIAA) won its seventh straight match in three sets to run its set win streak to 21 in a row. The seven-game win streak for the Bearcats is tied for the ninth-longest win streak in school history.

Maddy Bruder and Sofia Schleppenbach each posted double-figure kill totals in the match. Bruder tallied 13 kills and Schleppenbach notched 12 kills. Maddy Ahrens ran the Bearcat offense and was credited with 38 assists, eight digs, two kills and a service ace.

Northwest jumped out all over Missouri Southern in the opening set. Northwest scored the first five points and built a 17-3 lead. Northwest hit .370 with 15 kills, while Missouri Southern hit -.077 with four kills and six errors.

The second set was much tighter and featured 16 ties and eight lead changes. With the set deadlocked at 23-23, Northwest got a kills from Bruder to earn a set point. MSSU’s Kylee Kaaihue missed on an attack and Northwest took the set, 25-23.

Northwest closed out the match with a victory in the third. The set featured nine ties and three lead changes. Northwest opened up a 19-14 lead and looked to cruise to the three-set win. However, MSSU used an 8-3 run to even the set at 22-22. The Bearcats finished off the match with a pair of kills from Bruder to take it, 26-24.

Northwest will travel to Southwest Baptist on Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup between the Bearcats.

Northwest Missouri State soccer falls to Lindenwood

The Lindenwood Lions defeated the Northwest Bearcats 2-0 at Bearcat Pitch. This brings Lindenwood to 3-3-1 and Northwest falls to 1-5-0.

Sami Gregory scored the Lions’ first goal 32 minutes in the game. Their second goal was scored by Jordan Wipke on a penalty kick.
Northwest goalkeeper Alexis Serna-Castillo had 8 saves on the day, and Lindenwood goalkeeper Lauren Greenstein had 10.

Northwest soccer will be back in action Sunday against the University of Central Missouri Jennies at 1 p.m. for Soctoberfest. The first 400 fans will receive a free Stein and a root beer float.

Griffon volleyball gets swept by Northwest Missouri State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team lost in three sets at Northwest Missouri Tuesday night. The loss drops the Griffons to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA. Northwest improved to 11-3 and 3-0 in league play.

NOTABLES

  • The sets were closer than the match score with 29 ties and 11 lead changes, including 17 ties and nine lead changes in the first set
  • Missouri Western led set one, 22-21, but Northwest ended on a 4-0 run to take an early 1-0 lead
  • The Griffons jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the third and led 13-11 before a Northwest run flipped things on MWSU which quickly trailed 16-14
  • Missouri Western fought back to tie set three at 19 each, but never led again
  • MWSU held the MIAA’s top hitting percentage team to a .196 clip, the third lowest total of the season for the Bearcats

Northwest’s Ross earns MIAA cross country honor

Northwest Missouri State University freshman Caroline Ross earned the MIAA’s co-female cross country athlete of the week honor for her performance this past weekend at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ross (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) clocked in a with a time of 24:01 for the 6,000 meter course. Ross placed fifth overall in the gold division race.

Griffon soccer blanks Northwest Missouri State 4-0

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Three second half goals lifted the Missouri Western women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win at Northwest Missouri (1-3) Sunday afternoon.

The Griffons (4-2) had their first undefeated weekend of the season and picked up their third-straight win with a dominant offensive performance and the team’s first shutout of the year. Cassidy Menke put the Griffs up 1-0 in the 10th minute. The rivals went to the break with MWSU up 1-0. It was all Missouri Western in the second half. Menke assisted Claire Meyers’ second goal of the weekend in the 65th minute. Brooke Howe scored the first goal of her career with an assist to Kelsey Roe less than six minutes after Meyers’ goal. Jordan Jennings scored her first goal of the season in the 81st minute to give the Griffs a season high, four goals.

Anna Mayer earned her first career shutout and picked up her fourth win of the season. She had three saves in the first half and one more in the first 10 minutes of the second half before giving way to Ally Barb who didn’t have to save any shots to seal the shutout.

No. 4 Bearcats dominate Missouri Southern 63-0

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University football team rolled to a 63-0 victory over Missouri Southern State University in front of 8,550 fans for Family Weekend at Bearcat Stadium.

Northwest (3-0 overall) racked up 588 total yards and 31 first downs. The Bearcats posted 256 rushing yards and 332 passing yards. The Bearcat defense limited the Lions to 187 total yards and 11 first downs.

Northwest scored a touchdown on five of six possessions in the first half and led 35-0 at the break. Shawn Bane Jr posted 193 all-purpose yards in the first half that included a 75-yard touchdown reception and an 88-yard punt return for a score.

The Bearcats added to the lead in the third quarter by piling on 21 more points as a trio of Northwest running backs found the end zone. Isaiah Strayhorn scored from two yards out with 11:10 left in the third. Josh Caldwell scored his second rushing score of the game with 8:12 left in the third, and Brody McMahon tallied an eight-yard score with 4:48 remaining in the quarter.

Kier Brown scored his first collegiate touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the fourth to cap the scoring at 63-0. Altogether, Northwest rushed for six touchdowns on the day.

Northwest had 13 different receivers make a catch and the Bearcats had four different players complete passes, including wide receiver LaTroy Harper. Harper connected with quarterback Braden Wright on a 31-yard passing play.

For the second straight game, Northwest posted double-figure tackle-for-loss totals with 10. Northwest registered three quarterback sacks. Jerrell Green secured his first interception as a Bearcat for the only Lion turnover on the day.

The Bearcats will hit the road next Saturday for a 6 p.m. kick against Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla.

Northwest Missouri State volleyball knocks off No. 9 Central Missouri

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team posted its second-ever 3-0 sweep of the University of Central Missouri Jennies Saturday night in Bearcat Arena. Northwest won by set scores of 25-11, 25-18, 25-21.

Northwest moved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play. UCM drops to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAA action.

Bearcat senior Maddy Bruder came up big with 19 kills (.326) and 15 digs. Bruder posted 10 of her kills in the final set as the Bearcats rallied from a pair of deficit to close out the match in three sets.

Northwest jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the opening set. The Bearcats then used a 9-2 spurt to take a 21-10 lead. Northwest hit .615 in the first set with 17 kills and only one attack error. Northwest captured the opening set, 25-11.

Northwest turned a 6-6 tie in the second set into a 14-6 lead with an 8-0 run. UCM would only get as close as four points the rest of the set as the Panthers took it, 25-18.

UCM gained the early edge in the third set with a 6-1 lead for the Jennies. However, it quickly evaporated as the Bearcats scored five in a row for a 6-6 tie. The Jennies took a 13-9 lead before Northwest head coach Amy Woerth took a timeout to settle the home squad. The Bearcats responded with a 6-0 run and a 15-13 lead. UCM rattled off three straight points only to see Northwest answer right back with a 4-0 spurt to take a 19-17 lead. The Bearcats would ride Bruder the rest of the way and take the set, 25-21.

Setter Maddy Ahrens tallied a match-high 43 assists. Sofia Schleppenbach was credited with a team-best five blocks.

Northwest will be back in action at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Missouri Western.

NOTES: Bruder recorded her fifth double-double of the season and 47th of her Bearcat career … Northwest is 10-0 in three-set matches this season.

Bearcat volleyball sweeps Lindenwood Friday

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team opened MIAA play with a 3-0 sweep of the Lindenwood at Bearcat Arena. Northwest won by set scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-21.

Northwest (9-3 overall, 1-0 MIAA) had an attack bolstered by Maddy Bruders (16 kills, Sofia Schleppenbach (12 kills) and Hallie Sidney (9 kills). Olivia Nowakowski recorded a match-high 13 digs.

The Bearcats hit .328 in the match with 51 kills to go against only 13 attack errors. Northwest limited Lindenwood to .211 hitting percentage. Northwest posted five service aces to only one for Lindenwood.

Northwest took control early on by hitting .500 in the first set. Northwest had 16 kills and two errors in the opening 25-18 victory. Bruder and Sidney each posted five kills in the set.

Northwest will return to the court Saturday night when the Bearcats take on Central Missouri at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free to volleyball following the Northwest football game.
