Northwest soccer loses at No. 1 Central Missouri 4-1

The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team traveled to Warrensburg to take on No. 1-ranked University of Central Missouri soccer team Friday and lost, 4-1. This extended the current UCM winning streak to 31 in a row.

Courtney Killian scored the Jennies’s first goal, which was assisted by Annie Parscale 11:40 into the game. They scored three goals from 58:36-62:31. These goals were scored by Jada Scott, Maria Wilder, and Makayla Toth (all unassisted). Northwest got on the board with 15 minutes left with a UCM own goal.

UCM is now 5-0 on the season. Northwest falls to 1-3. The Bearcats come back home to play Missouri Western Sunday Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. on Bearcat Pitch.

Northwest’s Wright named MIAA offensive player of the week

Northwest Missouri State redshirt freshman quarterback Braden Wright (Elkhorn, Neb.) has been named the MIAA offensive player of the week after leading the Bearcats to a 38-17 victory at Washburn.

Wright rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for 233 yards and another score against the Ichabods at Yager Stadium.

Wright scored on a 27-yard run with 7:11 left in the second quarter to knot the game at 14-14. Wright then put Northwest ahead for good in the third quarter when he scored again on the ground from 17 yards out. Wright was 23-of-35 passing, including a 14-yard scoring strike to Chase White in the fourth quarter.

Wright and the No. 4-ranked Bearcats (2-0 overall) will play host to Missouri Southern (0-2 overall) on Family Day Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium.

Woerth earned 100th career win in Northwest’s victory over Newman

WICHITA, Kansas – Northwest Missouri State head volleyball coach Amy Woerth earned her 100th career coaching victory Saturday night as the Bearcats topped Newman University in a three-set sweep. Northwest won by set scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-15.

Woerth becomes the fourth Northwest volleyball coach to reach the 100-win plateau. Sarah Pelster (199 from 1991-2002), Pam Stanek (176 from 1977-1981) and Susie Homan (105 from 1982-1984) were the previous three Bearcat mentors to win at least 100 matches.

Maddy Bruder secured her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills (.419) and 13 digs.

Sofia Schleppenbach hit .500 with 10 kills and added a team-best five blocks. Bethany Elkins recorded nine kills (.412) and produced four blocks.

Northwest limited Newman to .019 hitting percentage as the Jets had 25 kills against 23 errors.

Northwest will return to the court Friday as the Bearcats embark on MIAA play against Lindenwood. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.

NOTES: Bruder has recorded 47 career double-doubles … the Bearcats won all three matches at the Jet Classic in 3-0 sweeps … Northwest is 8-0 in three-set matches this season.

Northwest volleyball defeats Ouachita Baptist in three sets

WICHITA, Kansas – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team scored a 3-0 sweep over Ouachita Baptist at the Jet Classic. Northwest won by set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-22.

Northwest (6-3 overall) got a match-high 13 kills from Maddy Bruder. Maddy Ahrens recorded her third double-double of the season with 29 assists and 13 digs. Olivia Nowakowski posted a team-best 14 digs. Hallie Sidney was credited with four blocks.

The opening set featured 12 ties and five lead changes before Northwest closed it out on a 5-0 run. The run was begun when Nowakowski notched a pair of service aces. Sofia Schleppenbach got a solo block for the clinching point to give the Bearcats a 25-20 victory.

Northwest held an 18-13 lead in the second set before Ouachita Baptist rallied to knot it at 18-18. But Northwest refused to yield and answered with a 4-0 spurt that led to a 25-22 triumph.

The Bearcats trailed 10-7 early in the third set before a 5-0 run gave Northwest its first lead of the final set. The run was keyed by a pair of blocks from Sidney and Elkins. Northwest would go on to take the third set, 25-22.

Northwest will return to the court on Saturday for a pair of matches against St. Edward’s (10 a.m.) and Newman (6 p.m.).

Northwest Missouri State soccer gets blanked by Truman State

The Truman State Bulldogs defeated the Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team 2-0 at Chillicothe High School Friday.

The Bulldogs first goal came from Chance Douglass in the 35th minute of the first half which was assisted by Chloe Hollander, shortly followed by a goal from Hanna Hickey, from Douglass in the 41st minute.

The Bulldogs move to 3-0 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 1-2. The Bearcats will be in action again next Friday, September 14 at the University of Central Missouri.

No. 6 Bearcats use big second half to defeat Washburn 38-17

TOPEKA, Kansas – The Northwest Missouri State football team used a second-half surge to post a 38-17 win over the Washburn Ichabods Thursday night at Yager Stadium.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Braden Wright rushed for a game-high 118 yards and two touchdowns. Wright added 233 yards passing and a score through the air.

The Bearcat defense limited the Ichabods to four first downs in the second half after allowing 14 in the opening 30 minutes of action.

Northwest recorded 17 tackles-for-loss and five quarterback sacks in the victory. Northwest had nine different players tally a tackle-for-loss and five different players record sacks.

Northwest (2-0 overall) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Strayhorn. His score capped a 9-play, 59-yard drive that took 3:19 off the clock.

Washburn (1-1 overall) evened it up at 7-7 on its next drive with a 24-yard scoring strike from Blake Peterson to James Letcher Jr. with 5:35 left in the first quarter.

The Ichabods took a 14-7 advantage with 10:09 remaining in the second quarter on a 39-yard pass from Peterson to James Brania-Happ. The drive included seven plays and went for 77 yards in 2:55.

Northwest knotted the score up at 14-14 on a 27-yard scamper by Braden Wright with 7:11 left in the second quarter. Wright drove the Bearcats 62 yards in eight plays in 2:51.

The Bearcats turned the ball over twice in the opening half. Northwest was able to force a turnover when Chance Hall intercepted a pass on the five-yard line to end a Washburn drive in the second quarter.

Washburn opened the scoring in the second half with a 35-yard field goal by Perry Schmiedeler.

Northwest answered back with an 11-play, 77-yard drive that was finished off by Wright, who carried a handful of Ichabod defenders into the end zone. Wright’s 17-yard touchdown run gave Northwest a 21-17 advantage.

Wright added a 33-yard scramble to put Northwest in field goal position late in the third quarter. After the drive stalled, placekicker Parker Sampson banked in a 39-yard field goal off the right upright to give Northwest a 24-17 lead with 2:38 left in the quarter.

Chase White caught a 14-yard scoring strike from Wright with 12:42 left in the fourth quarter to give Northwest a 31-17 advantage.

Josh Caldwell capped the scoring when he plowed in from 17 yards out on a 4th and 2 with 2:01 left in the game. Caldwell’s score gave Northwest a 38-17 lead over Washburn.

The Bearcats will return home for Family Weekend on Sept. 15 against Missouri Southern. Kick is set for 1:30 p.m. at Bearcat stadium.

NOTES: Northwest has defeated Washburn 14 straight times … Northwest has won 24 of the last 25 meetings between the two teams … Northwest has not allowed a rushing touchdown in 15 consecutive games … theBearcat defense has not allowed an opposing rusher reach 100 yards for the 44th straight game.

Northwest volleyball falls in five sets to Colorado Mesa

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Colorado Mesa went the distance and handed Northwest Missouri State its first lost of the 2018 season, 3-2. Colorado Mesa won by set scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11.

Colorado Mesa (3-3 overall) hit .161 with 58 kills in the five-set thriller. Northwest (5-1 overall) hit .117 with 43 kills. Each squad tallied 84 digs.

Kansas City native Olivia Nowakowski recorded a match-high 33 digs for the Bearcats.

Senior Maddy Bruder posted a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Hallie Sidney also notched a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Saturday at the Rockhurst Classic with matches against Sioux Falls (3:30 p.m.) and against Rockhurst (7:30 p.m.).

Northwest Missouri State soccer wins opener against William Jewell

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over William Jewell on Thursday at Bearcat Pitch.

First-year head coach Marc Gordon’s squad put up 20 shots and got goals from Madie Krueger and Maddie Holtmann in the victory.

William Jewell took a 1-0 lead in the opening period on a goal from Kayla Crowder in the 28th minute.

Northwest wasted little time in equalizing the score at 1-1 on a goal from Krueger in the 30th minute. Krueger knotted the contest with an assist from Adrie Gunn.

The Bearcats scored the game-winning goal from Holtman six minutes into the second period. Holtman fired a shot that was blocked by William Jewell’s goalie Kaylie Kappelmann, but Holtman controlled the rebound and found the back of the net.

Northwest goalie Alexa Serna Castillo made 12 saves for the Bearcats.

Northwest will be in action Sunday at 6 p.m. at Rockhurst.

Northwest Missouri State volleyball stays unbeaten with two wins Saturday

TOPEKA, Kansas – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball squad put the finishing touches on an unblemished weekend with a 3-0 victory over Dallas Baptist at the Washburn Invitational. The Bearcats won by set scores of 25-19, 25-10, 25-23.

Northwest (4-0 overall) did not drop a set in each of its four matches against Colorado State-Pueblo, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Henderson State and Dallas Bapist.

The opening set against Dallas Baptist featured 11 ties and six lead changes before the Bearcats pulled away late for a 25-19 triumph. The set was deadlocked at 17-17 before Northwest used a 7-0 run to gain separation.

The Bearcats raced out to a commanding 9-1 lead in the second set en route to a 25-10 victory. Northwest recorded 14 kills and a .375 hitting percentage in the second stanza, while limiting Dallas Baptist to five kills and four errors (.048).

Dallas Baptist held a 4-2 lead early in the third set before a 6-0 run by Northwest gave the Bearcats an advantage it would not relinquish. Dallas Baptist pulled to within one point on six occasions in the remainder of the set but could not knot it up. Northwest held a 24-20 lead and was able to close it out, 25-23.

Senior Maddy Bruder recorded a match-high 10 kills. Sophomore Maddy Ahrens pitched in with 27 assists and 10 digs for her second double-double on the season. Senior Olivia Nowakowski tallied a match-high 16 digs to go along with five service aces.

Northwest was limited to .192 hitting percentage – its lowest total of the season. The Bearcats had hit .319 or higher in each of their previous three wins to start the 2018 season.

Northwest will head to the Rockhurst Tournament next weekend in Kansas City, Missouri. Northwest will take on William Jewel on Friday at 9 a.m., followed by Colorado Mesa at 5:30 p.m. The Bearcats will tangle two more times on Saturday against Sioux Falls at 3:30 p.m. and against tournament host Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m.

Northwest Missouri State volleyball wins two matches Friday

TOPEKA, Kansas – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball squad got its second sweep of the day at the Washburn Invitational with a 3-0 triumph over Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Northwest won by set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-16.

Northwest senior Maddy Bruder posted her 1,000 career dig in the victory. Bruder has tallied 1,001 career digs in a Bearcat uniform. Bruder posted 11 kills and eight digs in the match.

Freshman Rachael Sturdevant posted a team-best 13 kills with a .632 hitting percentage to lead the Bearcats to the victory.

Northwest hit .314 with 45 kills and only 13 attack errors. The Bearcats tallied eight blocks against the Savage Storm.

The Bearcats gained advantage early in the match with a .400 hitting percentage in the opening set. Northwest recorded 15 kills and three errors, while holding the Savage Storm to a .179 hitting percentage.

The second set was much tighter with six ties and five lead changes, but the Bearcats pulled away late for a 25-19 triumph.

Northwest belted 13 kills against two errors in the final set and never trailed en route to a 25-16 win.

The Bearcats will be back in action tomorrow with matches against Henderson State (1-1 overall) at 9 a.m. and against Dallas Baptist (1-1) at 1 p.m.
