Northwest drops final regular season game at Central Oklahoma

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Central Oklahoma, 8-3, on Sunday in Edmond, Ok.
The Bearcats are now 30-20 overall and 25-11 in MIAA play while the Bronchos improve to 33-17 overall and 25-11 in MIAA play.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored twice in the seventh and one in the ninth inning. The Bronchos scored once in the first and second innings, three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth inning.
– The Bearcats had three runs on 9 hits with three errors. Central Oklahoma had nine runs on 15 hits with one error.
– Hudson Bilodeau finished the series 3-for-5 with one run scored, three RBIs and a homerun.
– Kevin Handzlik finished the day 2-for-4.
– Derek Hussey also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
– Luke Hassman went 1-for-4.
– Logan Rycraft was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
– Jacob Wagner threw three shutout innings and allowed only three hits and he struck out one batter.

Key Northwest Innings
– After two outs, Rycraft reached on a fielder’s choice and was brought around to score on a homerun to right field by Bilodeau to put the Bearcats on the board.

– In the top of the ninth, Hussey led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After an out, Hussey came around to score on an out to the second baseman to conclude the scoring for the Cats.

Up Next
– Northwest will be the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament and they’ll play Emporia State in the first round Thursday at 12:30 p.m.  The tournament is hosted by Central Missouri and all games will be played at Crane Stadium in Warrensburg.

Northwest defeats UCO to clinch share of MIAA baseball title

The Northwest Missouri State baseball team clinched a share of the MIAA regular season title with a 9-8 win at Central Oklahoma on Saturday.

The Bearcats improve to 30-19 overall and 25-10 in MIAA play. The Bronchos fall to 32-17 and 24-11 in conference action.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored once in the second, six runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth inning. The Bronchos scored six in the first, one in the second and one in the ninth inning.
– The Bearcats had nine runs on ten hits with one error. Central Oklahoma had eight runs on 16 hits with no errors.
– Kevin Handzlik finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and a homerun.
– Derek Hussey also went 2-for-3 he scored three runs and had one RBI.
– Logan Rycraft was 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a double.
– Hudson Bilodeau finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a double, a triple and a run scored.
– Mondesi Gutierrez was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.
– Luke Hassman went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
– Aaron Barratt finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored.
– Brad Roberts picked up his seventh winning after throwing 6.1 innings and striking out seven batters.
– Trevor Dudar picked up his 14th save of the year after throwing one inning and allowed one hit.

Key Northwest Innings
– To lead off the top of the second inning Handzlik hit a solo homerun over the left field fence to put the Bearcats on the board.

– After an out, Hassman walked and Handzlik singled up the middle, they both would then come around to score on a double by Barratt to left center. With two outs, Hussey singled through the left side to score Barratt and Hussey quickly stole second. Rycraft walked and stole second and both runners would come in to score on a triple to center field by Bilodeau. Gutierrez kept the inning going with a double down the right field line to score Bilodeau and give the Cats the lead.

– In the top of the sixth inning, Hussey singled to first base and advanced to single on a balk. Hussey would then come around to score on a double to right center by Rycraft to increase the lead.

– After an out, Hussey walked and promptly stole second. Rycraft reached base on a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Gutierrez hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hussey and put the Bearcats up 9-7.

Northwest Missouri State gets blown out at Central Oklahoma 17-0

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Central Oklahoma 17-0 in game one of their series on Friday in Edmond, Oklahoma.

The Bearcats fall to 29-19 overall and 24-10 in conference while the Bronchos improve to 32-16 overall and 24-10 in conference play.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Central Oklahoma scored three runs in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth, two in the second and five in the fifth inning.
– The Bearcats had no runs on four hits and two errors. The Bronchos had 17 runs on 13 hits with one error.
– Hudson Bilodeau finished 1-for-3.
– Landon Figg went 1-for-3.
– Kevin Handzlik was 1-for-3.

Northwest’s Gutierrez named MIAA Hitter of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University junior Mondesi Gutierrez was named the MIAA Hitter of the Week for his performance during the Bearcats’ sweep of Southwest Baptist this weekend. Gutierrez went .588 with ten total hits, ten runs scored, three doubles, one triple, nine RBIs, and he hit three home runs.

On Friday, he went 4-for-5 while scoring three runs, he hit four runs in and hit two homeruns. On Saturday he finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and a triple.

Northwest heads to Central Oklahoma this Friday to begin a three-game MIAA series with the Bronchos. Friday’s game will begin at 3 p.m. in Edmond, Ok.

Bearcats shutout Southwest Baptist in series finale

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team picked up a 4-0 victory on Sunday over Southwest Baptist at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo.

The Bearcats move to 29-18 overall and 24-9 in MIAA play while SBU falls to 16-31 overall and 10-23 in conference.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored one run in the first, third, fourth and eighth innings.
– The Bearcats had four runs on ten hits with one error. SBU had no runs on six hits with two errors.
– Landon Figg was perfect on the day going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three doubles.
– Hudson Bilodeau went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a double and he continued his hitting streak to 23 games.
– Luke Hassman was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
– Kevin Handzlik went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
– Aaron Barratt was 1-for-4 with a double.
– Matt Schingel finished 1-for-3 with RBI and a double.
– Logan Rycraft went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
– Quintin Van Ackeren picked up his fourth win after throwing seven shutout innings, he allowed only four hits and struck out four batters.
– Trevor Dudar grabbed his 13th save of the year to put him as the all time leader in saves in a single season.

Key Northwest Innings
– In the bottom of the first inning, Bilodeau hit a double to right center and then moved to third on a fly out. Figg followed an out with a double to right field to score Bilodeau from third.

– After an out, Gutierrez reached on an error and moved to third on a double down the right field line by Figg. Hassman would then single to left field to score Gutierrez and put the Bearcats ahead 2-0.

– After an out, Hussey walked and came around to score on a double to left field by Rycraft to put the Cats up 3-0.

– Handzlik started the eighth inning with a single up the middle and moved to third on a double to left center by Barratt. Schingel hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to score Handzlik and make the score 4-0.

Northwest Missouri State rolls past Southwest Baptist 14-3

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team defeated Southwest Baptist, 14-3, on Saturday at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo.

The Bearcats improve to 28-18 overall and 23-9 in MIAA play. SBU falls to 16-30 overall and 10-22 in conference action.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored twice in the first, three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the second and six in the sixth inning. Southwest Baptist scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
– The Bearcats had 14 runs on 16 hits with no errors. SBU had three runs on five hits with two errors.
– Kevin Handzlik was perfect from the plate going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
– Mondesi Gutierrez went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and three runs scored.
– Hudson Bilodeau finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.
– Landon Figg went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and three runs scored.
– Aaron Barratt was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, a walk and a two run homerun.
– Matt Schingel went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.
– Luke Hassman 1-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.
– Brad Roberts threw a complete game throwing seven innings allowed only three runs on five hits and struck out ten batters.

Key Northwest Innings
– After an out, Gutierrez doubled to left field and Figg reached on a walk. Handzlik would hit a sharp single down the right field line to Gutierrez and put runners on the corners. On an attempted double steal, Figg was able to score and make the score 2-0 in the first.

– With one out, Gutierrez tripled to center field and came in to score on a single to right field by Figg. After an out, Handzlik lined a single to right field to advance Figg and put runners on the corners. Barratt walked to load the bases and Schingel singled through the left side to score Figg and Handzlik to put the Bearcats ahead 5-0.

– In the bottom of the fourth inning with one out, Bilodeau double down the right field line and came in to score on a single to center field by Gutierrez.
– Handzlik started the fifth inning with a single to right field and would then come around to score on Barratt’s seventh homerun of the year to put the Cats up 8-0.

– Gutierrez drew a one out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced to third on a single down the right field line by Figg. Gutierrez came in to score on a double down the right field line by Hassman to put runners on second and third. Both runners came in to score on a hard single to right field by Handzlik. Barratt reached on a fielder’s choice and Schingel singled to the left field to score Handzlik. On an out, Barratt was able to come in and score while Schingel advanced to third. Rycraft reached on an error and Schingel came in to score to make the score 14-2.

Bearcats outscore Southwest Baptist 19-15 to win first game of series

The Northwest Missouri State baseball team defeated Southwest Baptist Friday in Maryville 19-15.

The Bearcats are now 27-18 overall and 22-9 in conference while SBU falls to 16-29 overall and 10-21 in conference play.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored tow runs in the first, eight in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and seventh innings and one in the eighth inning. SBU scored two in the second and third innings, four in the fifth, three in the seventh and four in the ninth inning.
– The Bearcats had 19 runs on 17 hits with four errors. Southwest Baptist had 15 runs on 17 hits and one error.
– Mondesi Gutierrez finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and one homerun.
– Luke Hassman went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, one RBI, a double and a triple.
– Hudson Bilodeau was 3-for-6 with two RBIs, one run scored and one homerun.
– Aaron Barratt went 2-for-5 with five RBIs, two runs scored and a homerun.
– Landon Figg was 1-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.
– Kevin Handzlik finished 1-for-4 scoring three times, walked twice and had an RBI.
– Matt Schingel finished 1-for-2 he drew two walks, scored three times and hit his first collegiate homerun.
– Derek Hussey went 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.


Key Northwest Innings
– Bilodeau got the Cats going in the first inning with a solo homerun to right field and Gutierrez followed it up with his own homerun to left field to put the Cats up 2-0.

– In the bottom of the fourth, Figg led off with a walk, Hassman singled through the left side and Handzlik drew a walk to load the bases. Barratt would bring them all in when he sent a grand slam over the left center fence to give the Bearcats the lead. Schingel followed him up with a solo shot to center field to increase the lead. Hussey would then draw a walk and move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rycraft. With two outs, Gutierrez hit a double to left center to score Hussey and Gutierrez would then come around to score on a homerun to right center by Figg.

– After an out, Schingel and Hussey drew back-to-back walks and after another out Bilodeau singled to the shortstop to load the bases. Gutierrez singled to center field to score Schingel and Hussey to make the score 12-8.

– To start the sixth inning, Hassman doubled to center and then came in to score on another double by Handzlik down the right field line. Barratt brought in Handzlik with a single to left field and then would move to second on a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Rycraft was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Bilodeau and Barratt was able to score.

– Hassman led off the seventh inning with a single through the left side and moved to second on a walk by Handzlik. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Barratt and Schingel loaded the bases after he drew a walk. Hussey doubled down the left field line to score all three runners and make the score 18-11.

– In the bottom of the eighth, Gutierrez led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a fly ball. Hassman reached on an error by the infield and Gutierrez was able to score.

– The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team picked up a pair of wins over Missouri Southern on Friday in Joplin, Mo.
– The Bearcats improve to 25-18 overall, 20-9 in conference, while the Lions fall to 23-20 overall and 11-18 in conference play.


Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 4, Missouri Southern 1)
– Northwest scored one in the first and three in the second inning. The Lions got one run in the third inning.
– The Bearcats had four runs on eight hits with one error. Missouri Southern had one run on four hits with one error.
– Aaron Barratt finished 2-for-4.
– Hudson Bilodeau went 1-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI, a walk and a homerun.
– Mondesi Gutierrez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
– Luke Hassman finished 1-for-4.
– Kevin Handzlik was 1-for-4 with one run scored.
– Matt Schingel went 1-for-4.

– Handzlik started the second inning by reaching safely on an error and advanced to third on a single to left center by Barratt. After an out, Handzlik came in to score on a wild pitch and Barratt moved to third. Hussey drew a one out walk and stole second and Bilodeau drew a walk to load the bases. Gutierrez singled to left center to score Barratt and Hussey to put the Bearcats ahead 4-0.


Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 7, Missouri Southern 6)
– The Bearcats scored four in the second, two in the fourth and one in the eighth inning. MSSU scored five runs in the first and one in the sixth inning.
– Northwest had seven runs on 11 hits and no errors. The Lions scored six run on 11 hits with no errors.
– Hassman finished the game going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored.
– Logan Rycraft went 3-for-4 with one RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
– Barratt was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and RBI, a double and one stolen base.
– Bilodeau went 1-for-4 with one walk.
– Handzlik was 1-for-4 with one run scored, a double and one walk.
– Hussey went 1-for-4 with with two RBIs and a run scored.
Game Two Key Innings
– Hassman started the second inning with a single through the left side and advanced to third on a double down the right field line by Handzlik. Barratt followed it up with a double of his own to score Hassman and put Handzlik on third. After an out, Hussey singled up the middle to score Handzlik and Barratt. Rycraft kept the inning going with a single to right field to put runners on the corners. Hussey came in to score on a balk to conclude the scoring from the Bearcats.

– After an out, Rycraft and Bilodeau got the inning going with singles to put two runners on. Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners on the corners. Figg walked to load the bases adn Hassman doubled down the right field line to score Rycraft and Gutierrez to give the Bearcats a 6-4 lead.

– Barratt started the inning with a single to left field and stole second after an out. With two outs, Rycraft singled up the middle to score Barratt and give the Bearcats the lead.

Northwest softball gets swept by Washburn

– The Northwest Missouri State University softball team falls in a pair of conference games against Washburn University in Topeka, Ks.
– The Bearcats fall to 25-17 overall and 16-10 in conference, while Washburn improves to 39-10 overall and 23-3 in conference play.


Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 1, Washburn 5)
– Northwest scored one run in the fifth inning. The Ichabods scored three runs in the first, one in the third and one in the sixth inning.
– The Bearcats had one run on eight hits and one error. Washburn scored five runs on nine hits and zero errors.
– Erin Keeney finished 2-for-3 and drew a walk.
– Karli Allen was also 2-for-3.
– Rebecca Maher went 1-for-3 and drew a walk.
– Kaitlyn Weis finished 1-for-4 and scored one run.
– Abigail Gilson was 1-for-3.
– Kiana Baderdeen went 1-for-3.
– Sydne Brashear knocked in the one Bearcat run.
Game One Key Innings
– After an out, Weis singled up the middle and Keeney followed it up with a single of her own to move Weis to third. Brashear hit a fly ball to center field to score Weis and put the Bearcats on the board.


Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 2, Washburn 3)
– The Bearcats scored one run in the fourth and fifth inning. Wasburn scored one run in the third and two in the sixth inning.
– Northwest had two runs on four hits and two errors. The Ichabods had three runs on eight hits and two errors.
– Brashear finished the day going 2-for-3 with a double.
– Maher finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a double.
– Weis was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Game Two Key Innings
– Weis started the top of the fourth with a single to center field and moved to second on sacrifice bunt by Keeney. Brashear reached on a fielding error to put runners on the corners. Gilson hit a sacrifice fly to second base to score Weis from third.

– In the fifth inning, Rawie drew a walk to get teh Cats going and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Baderdeen. Maher doubled to left field to score Rawie and put the Bearcats up 2-1.

Bearcat baseball opens with 4-3 win at Missouri Southern

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team defeats Missouri Southern, 4-3, on Thursday in Joplin, Mo.

The Bearcats improve to 23-18 overall and 18-9 in conference while the Lions fall to 23-18 overall and 11-16 in conference play.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored all four runs in the first inning. Missouri Southern scored one in the second and two in the fourth inning.
– The Bearcats had four runs on nine hits and three errors. The Lions had three runs on eight hits with two errors.
– Hudson Bilodeau went 3-for-5 with one run scored.
– Luke Hassman was 2-for-4 with one run scored, a double and one run batted in.
– Kevin Handzlik finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, drew one walk and a double.
– Mondesi Gutierrez went 1-for-4 he drew one walk and a run scored.
– Landon Figg was 1-for-4 with one run scored.
– Joseph Hietpas got the win for the Cats after throwing 6.2 innings, allowed only three runs and struck out seven batters.
– Trevor Dudar picked up his ninth save of the year after throwing one inning.

– Bilodeau started the game off with a single through the right side and moved to second on a bunt single by Gutierrez. Figg reached safely on a throwing error which allowed Bilodeau to come around and score from second. Hassman kept the hitting going with a double down the right field line to bring in Gutierrez and put runners on the corners. Handzlik brought in Figg from third with a single through the right side. After an out, Schingel laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Hassman and put the Bearcats up 4-0.
