Northwest men’s basketball adds Manhattan prep guard Trevor Hudgins

Northwest2013riggertMARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University head men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum has announced the addition of Trevor Hudgins to the 2017-18 Bearcat roster. Hudgins was an all-state performer at Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Kan.

“We are very excited that Trevor will be joining our program,” said McCollum. “He is athletic, plays with very good pace and has a real feel for the game. Trevor is a competitor and loves to win. He is a very good kid, who’s unselfish and comes from a great family.”

A 6-0 point guard, Hudgins helped lead Manhattan HS to three Centennial League titles, being named all-conference twice including picking up Player of the Year honors twice. As a senior, he led the Indians to a state championship tournament appearance. While playing for coach Benji George, Hudgins also picked up an all-district honor during his senior year.

Northwest Missouri State’s Caenepeel named MIAA Pitcher of the Year

Northwest2013riggertKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University’s Anthony Caenepeel has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Year in a press release from the conference office on Thursday. Caenepeel was named First Team All-MIAA while five other Bearcats also garnered all-conference honors. Nikko Pablo was named to the All-MIAA Third Team as a relief pitcher. Earning honorable mention were Ozzie Adams, Landon Figg, Garrett Fort and Luke Hassman.

Caenepeel leads the MIAA with 103 strikeouts, setting a Northwest single season record. His 94.2 innings pitched is the second most among conference pitchers and his eight victories puts him in a tie for second. He has held opponents to a .231 batting average, ranking sixth in the MIAA. He holds the Bearcat career record with 256 strikeouts and 266.0 innings pitched.

Pablo has transitioned seamlessly into the Northwest closer role. His 10 saves this season rank third in the MIAA. He has appeared in a Northwest record 79 contests in his four seasons. This year, he has appeared 31 times, working 46.1 innings. He has struck out 42 batters and allowed just 10 walks. Pablo has a 5-1 record and holds a career-low 3.30 ERA.

Fort is hitting a career-high .303 this season, making 49 starts. He has tallied 59 hits with 12 doubles, a triple and two home runs. He has scored 40 runs this season and stolen eight bases. Adams has appeared and started all 49 games for the Bearcats at second base. This year he is hitting a career-high .327 with 66 hits, 13 doubles, one triple and three home runs. He has scored 35 runs and tallied 34 RBIs while compiling a 96.9 fielding percentage. Figg is hitting .307 this season with 40 runs scored and 35 RBIs. He has also started all 49 contests for the Bearcats, compiling 58 hits with 15 doubles and five home runs. Hassman is in his first season with the Bearcats, hitting a team-best .328. He has 45 hits with nine doubles and six home runs. This year had has driven in 27 RBIs and scored 21 runs.

Northwest tennis earns four ITA regional awards

Northwest2013riggertSKILLMAN, N.J. – The Northwest Missouri State University men’s tennis team received four ITA Central Region awards at the NCAA National Championship site in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Head coach Mark Roswell, Aymeric Autones, Romain Boissinot and Sergi Fontcuberta were all honored with individual regional honors.

Rosewell was named the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year after leading the Bearcats to the region’s top ranking. Autones as named the region’s Most Improved Player (senior) and Boissinot was the ITA Senior Player of the Year. Fontcuberta garnered ITA Player to Watch accolades.

Northwest tennis falls to No. 2 Barry in NCAA Tournament round of 16

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University men’s tennis team fell to Barry University, 5-1, on Tuesday in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16. The match was played at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The No. 19 ranked Bearcats finish the year at 18-4 overall while No. 2 ranked Barry improves to 24-1 and advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

This season marked the ninth time in Northwest history the team had advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament and the fifth straight appearance for the Bearcats.

After falling at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles, Northwest’s Romain Boissinot and Sergi Fontcuberta battled to win an 8-5 decision at the No. 2 position.

At No. 1 singles, Boissinot took No. 3 ranked Ahmed Tirki to a first set tie breaker but fell behind 7-6. His match was unfinished when the competition was called.

Aymeric Autones took the first set at No. 5 singles, 6-2, but dropped the second set when the match was called.

Sergi Fontcuberta battled back after dropping the first set at No. 2 singles to lead the second set, 4-2.

Bearcats complete three-game sweep of Fort Hays State

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the eight to beat Fort Hays State, 5-4, on Sunday in the regular season finale at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo.

– The Bearcats finished the regular season at 31-18 overall and 19-16 in MIAA play. Fort Hays State finished the year at 10-39 overall and 3-33 in conference action.

– Landon Figg drove in two runs, going 1-for-3. He had a sacrifice fly in the fifth and hit a tying homerun in the eighth.

Key Northwest Statistics
– The Bearcats scored two runs in the second, one in the fifth and two in the eighth. Fort Hays State had one run in the third, one in the fourth and two in the seventh.

– Northwest had five runs on five hits with no errors. The Tigers scored four runs on 11 hits with three errors.

– James Holler scored twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

– Alixon Herrera went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. He also drew a walk and had a sacrifice bunt.

– Logan Rycraft went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

– Austin Wulff had an RBI, going 1-for-4 with a stolen base.

– Nikko Pablo got his 10th save of the year, working a perfect ninth inning while striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Key Northwest Innings
– Holler started the second with a single to left center and went to second on a wild pitch. Herrera delivered an RBI double to the corner in left for the game’s first run. Greenslade was hit by a pitch put runners on first and second. After a pair of outs, Rycraft hit an RBI single to left, scoring Herrera to make it 2-0 Northwest.

– Kraber entered the game with the bases loaded and one down in the top of the fourth. The right hander recorded a strikeout and then got out of the inning with a flyout to left.

– Rycraft hit a grounder to short to begin the fifth but the throw to first sailed into the dugout, allowing him to reach second. A groundout allowed Rycraft to make it to third. Handzlik drew a walk to put runners on the corners with one away. Figg hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Rycraft to put the Bearcats back ahead, 3-2.

– In the eighth, Figg took the second pitch he saw over the wall in center for his fifth home run of the year, tying the game, 4-4. Holler then drew a walk, forcing a pitching change. Herrera laid down a sacrifice bunt and was able to reach after a fielding error by the pitcher. Joseph Curtis came in to pinch run for Herrera. The Bearcats loaded the bases after Greenslade was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day. Holler came in to score after a Wulff popup was ruled an infield fly. The ball dropped in short right field and Holler alertly came in to score the go-ahead run.

Northwest Missouri State outlasts William Jewell in 11 innings

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University baseball team defeated William Jewell, 6-3, in 11 innings at Talley Baseball Stadium in Liberty, Mo., on Tuesday afternoon.

– The Bearcats move to 28-18 overall while the Cardinals fall to 18-24.

– Kevin Handzlik went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He was also hit by a pitch and had a sacrifice.

– It was the final non-conference game of the year for Northwest.

Key Northwest Statistics
– The Bearcats scored one in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the 11th. William Jewell scored on in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth.

– Northwest had six runs on nine hits with two errors. The Cardinals had three runs on seven hits with two errors.

– James Holler went 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.

– Garrett Fort scored twice, going 1-for-4. He drew a pair of walks.

– In the second, Fort drew a one out walk and went to second after Adams reached on an error. After a flyout, Fort went to third on a wild pitch and Holler drew a walk to load the bases. Handzlik hit the first pitch he saw for an RBI single, scoring the game’s first run.

– Rycraft started the fifth with a single to right. After Fort drew a walk, the Cardinals changed pitchers. Adams was immediately hit by a pitch to load the bases. A pair of strikeouts kept the bases loaded for Handzlik who hit an RBI single to left, driving in Rycraft to make it 2-0.

– The sixth inning started with a home run by Hrdlicka down the right field line, giving Northwest a 3-1 lead.

– Rycraft walked to start the 11th inning and Fort reached on a bunt single. Adams laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third. William Jewell loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Figg. Wilkinson, worked a full count and eventually grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Rycraft to score from third. Handzlik then drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a single to center, scoring Figg and Fort to make it 6-3.

Bearcat tennis to play Barry in NCAA Championship Tournament

Northwest2013riggertMARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University men’s tennis team will face Barry University in the first round of the NCAA Championship Tournament on Tuesday, May 9. The match will start at 11 a.m. CST, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Bearcats enter the round of 16 matchup as the ITA’s No. 19 ranked team in the nation with an 18-3 record. Northwest defeated Nebraska-Kearney in the Central Regional, 5-4, on Sunday, April 30. This is the fifth-straight appearance for the Bearcats in the NCAA Championships Tournament and the ninth all-time. Northwest has never faced Barry University.

The Barry Buccaneers are the ITA’s No. 2 ranked team in the country with a 23-1 overall record. Barry beat Valdosta State, 5-1, in the South Regional Championship.

Northwest tennis wins NCAA Tournament opener against Nebraska-Kearney

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament with a 5-4 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday.

– Due to weather, the match was played at the Montgomery County YMCA in Red Oak, Iowa.

– The win moves the No. 19 ranked Bearcats to 18-3 overall while No. 44 Nebraska-Kearney ends the season at 11-10.

– This marks the ninth time in Northwest history the team had advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament and the fifth straight appearance for the Bearcats.

– Northwest got off to a strong start, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

– UNK tied the match with a win at No. 3 singles but Northwest battled back with a victory at No. 2 from Sergi Fontcuberta and at No. 5 from Aymeric Autones.

– The three other singles matches all went three sets. No. 1 Romain Boissinot fell in a tough tiebreaker to make it 4-3 Northwest.

– The Lopers picked up another point at No. 5 singles to tie the match, 4-4.

– Fin Glowick had a crucial break in the third set of the No. 6 singles match and broke serve to claim match-winning set.

Rain washes out Sunday’s finale for Northwest baseball at Emporia State

Northwest2013riggertEMPORIA, Kan. – Sunday’s Northwest Missouri State University baseball game against Emporia State has been cancelled due to weather. The game will not be made up.

The Bearcats will play at William Jewell on Tuesday, May 2, at 3:30 p.m. in Liberty, Mo. Northwest will then return home on Friday, May 5, for a three-game series to conclude the regular season with Fort Hays State. Saturday will be Senior Day for Northwest.

Northwest wins first two games of MIAA softball tournament

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University softball team powered its way to a pair of wins on the opening day of the MIAA Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Thursday.

– The Bearcats run ruled Central Missouri, 11-2, in a five inning first contest on Field No. 3 to start the day.

– In the second game, Northwest beat Pittsburg State, 12-2, at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. PSU won their first game over Southwest Baptist in 14 innings before playing the Bearcats.

– Northwest improves to 29-19 on the year with the two victories.

– Abigail Gilson tied a Northwest single-game record with seven RBIs in the first game victory. Annie Melius had seven RBIs back on April 28, 1987 against Washburn.

– Taylor Blackford threw all 12.0 innings for the Bearcats on Thursday, getting two wins. She allowed just three earned runs and issued only one walk in the two games.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 11, Central Missouri 2)
– Northwest scored four in the first, five in the third and two in the fifth. The Jennies scored two runs in the third.

– The Bearcats had 11 runs on 12 hits with one error. Central Missouri had two runs on five hits with an error.

– Gilson drove in seven runs, going 4-for-4 with a grand slam in the first. She scored twice.

– Torri Blythe was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

– Rebecca Maher went 2-for-4 and scored three times.

– Kaitlyn Weis scored once, drove in a run and drew a walk, going 1-for-3.

– Northwest took advantage of a UCM error in the first, plating four on a Gilson grand slam. With one out, Weis drew a walk and Maher reached on an error by the third baseman. After another out, Rawie drew a walk to load the bases for Gilson who cleared the bases with her 10th home run of the year over the center field wall.

– Blackford needed just seven pitches in the second inning to retire the Jennies in order.

– Maher led off the third with a single to center amd Adams followed it up with a double to right center to force a pitching change. Rawie then hit a single down the right field line to drive in Maher. Gilson had a single to right to drive in Adams, making it 6-0 Bearcats. After an out, Baderdeen grounded out to second but Rawie came in to score on the play. Moses reached on an infield single to short to drive in Gilson. Blythe and Weis hit back-to-back singles to allow Moses to score, giving Northwest a 9-0 advantage.

– Gilson came through with another bases loaded hit in the fifth inning. Blythe started the frame with a single two batters later, Maher had a single to left center. Adams loaded the bases with a walk and with two down, Gilson hit a single up the middle to score a pair of runs, moving the Bearcat lead to 11-2.
Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 12, Pittsburg State 2)
– Northwest scored one in the first, four in the second, one in the third, one in the sixth and five in the seventh. The Gorillas scored once in the fifth and once in the seventh.

– The Bearcats had 12 runs on 15 hits with one error. Pittsburg State had two runs on four hits with four errors.

– Northwest led off every inning with a hit with the exception of the fifth.

– Maher went 3-for-5 with four runs driven in. She had a double and a home run, scoring twice.

– Adams was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. She had a double and a home run in the congest.

– Blythe scored three runs, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.

– Moses went 2-for-3, scoring a pair of runs. She was also hit by a pitch.

– Weis drove in three on a double in the seventh. She was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a sacrifice in the first.

– Blythe started the first with an infield single to second, After Weis sacrificed her over to second, Maher hit a single to right to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, Rawie hit a ball that landed in short center field, driving in Blythe to make it 1-0 Bearcats.

– Allen led off the second with her third home run of the season, taking a pitch out over the left center field fence. Two batters later, Moses legged out an infield single and Blythe drew a walk. With two down in the inning, Maher crushed a ball over the left field fence for her fifth home run of the season, making it 5-0 Bearcats.

– For the third straight inning, Northwest got its lead off batter on safely as Gilson hit a double to right field. Allen hit a grounder to third but a bad throw allowed her to reach second and Gilson came all the way around to score on the error to make it 6-0.

– In the sixth, Adams hit her sixth home run of the season to lead off the frame to put Northwest up, 7-1.

– Baderdeen started the seventh with a double to left center and Moses reached on an error by the shortstop. Blythe drew a walk to load the bases. Weis came through with a bases-clearing double to right center, making it a 10-1 Bearcat advantage. Pittsburg State made a pitching change but Northwest got back-to-back RBI doubles from Maher and Adams to move the lead to 12-1.
