Northwest women’s golf team finishes 2nd at NW Oklahoma State Invite

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University golf team finished second at the Northwest Oklahoma State Invitational on Monday.

Northwest shot a final round 347 for a two day total of 682 at the Meadowlake Golf Course in Enid, Okla.,

Southern Arkansas won the event with a total of 679 in a field that featured six teams and 40 total individuals.

Taylor Gardner finished in a tie for second with a total of 166, while Nikki McCurdy had back-to-back rounds of 85 to finish in fifth place.

Northwest had four players in the top nine and all five players in the top 17 of the tournament.

This was the final event of the fall season for the Bearcats. Northwest resumes play on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Missouri Western MIAA Spring Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo.

Bearcat soccer team loses at No. 10 Central Missouri 3-0

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State soccer team dropped Sunday’s road match at No. 10 Central Missouri 3-0 in Warrensburg, Mo.

The loss drops the Bearcats to 3-9-3 this season and 2-6-1 against conference opponents, while the Jennies improve to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the MIAA.

Senior Katelynn Lindsey took a chance on goal on a free kick five minutes into the match, but the Jennie keeper made a leaping save.

In the 11th minute, junior forward Jessica Breyfogle pulled the trigger from outside the box after a pass from Gianna Huspen, but the ball sailed wide of the net.

Huspen one-timed a shot after a centering pass early in the second half, but was off target.

Forward Anna Holden took a shot from the top of the box following a Chelsea Fournier corner kick in the 68th minute, but a Jennie defender stepped in the way.

Senior keeper Elizabeth Lee made nine saves in the match, including seven in the second half.

The Jennies struck first in the 17th minute before adding two more goals after intermission.

Northwest Missouri State will return home for the final weekend of the regular season when they host Missouri Western Friday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.

Northwest volleyball takes down Missouri Southern in five

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State volleyball team won a five-set match against Missouri Southern on Saturday evening in Joplin, Mo.

The Bearcats improved to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in MIAA play. The Lions fall to 2-20 overall and 1-10 in conference action.

Northwest hit .213 as a team and recorded 12 total blocks.

Miranda Foster had 11 kills with 11 digs and three block assists, while Setter Sarah Dannettell had a team-high 42 assists with 10 kills. She also had five digs, two blocks and a service ace.

Northwest Missouri State will return home for the team’s final two home games of the season. The Bearcats will host Washburn on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., followed by a home finale on Saturday against Emporia State at 3 p.m.

Northwest volleyball wins in three sets at Southwest Baptist

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep over Southwest Baptist on Friday evening at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar, Mo.

Northwest moved to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in MIAA play. SBU falls to 3-18 overall and 1-9 in conference action.

Maddy Bruder had a match-high 13 kills for the Bearcats in the victory.  Shelby Duren added 10 kills to go along with 11 digs defensively. She also had a pair of blocks while hitting 64.3 percent for the match.  Senior libero Aarika Wittenburg had a match-high 14 digs and also added a service ace.

Northwest hit .289 for the match with 42 kills while limiting SBU to just 27 kills and a .098 attack percentage.

The Bearcats will head to Joplin, Mo., for a 7 p.m. MIAA contest against Missouri Southern State on Saturday evening.

Bearcat soccer comes up short at Lindenwood 3-2

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State soccer team came up a goal short Friday at Lindenwood, losing 3-2.

The match was played as a regional matchup and will not count against MIAA standings.  With the loss, Northwest falls to 3-8-3 this season, while the Lady Lions improve to 4-7-4.

Danielle Wolfe scored her first goal of the season late in the match to narrow the deficit to one. The Olathe, Kan. native found herself behind the defense outside the left portion of the box in the 88th minute. As she dribbled into the 18-yard box, the keeper came out to make a stop, but the sophomore midfielder was able to chip past her and finish into an empty net.

Jill Kieffer took the lone Bearcat shot in the first half after receiving a deflection at the top of the box. Kieffer pulled the trigger, but it was right at the Lindenwood goalie.

Senior Elizabeth Lee made 12 saves in the match, the most by a Bearcat this season.

Northwest Missouri State will travel to Warrensburg, Mo. on Sunday, Oct. 25 for a meeting with the Central Missouri Jennies. The MIAA match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Griffons tied for 9th in MIAA men’s basketball preseason poll; Northwest picked to win the league

riggertMIAAKANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western men’s basketball team has been picked to finish in a tie for ninth place in the preseason MIAA coaches poll. The Griffons finished 10th last season, going 12-15 overall and 8-11 in the MIAA.

The Griffons lost two starters to graduation, including leading scorer Cortrez Colbert but return six letter winners from the 2014-15 team.

Kevin Thomas leads a group of three returning starters. Thomas’ 8.6 points per game were second on the team last season and he led MWSU with a 6.2 rebound per game average and 17 blocks. Cole Clearman’s 49 made three-pointers led the team. He returns after averaging 7.9 points per game last year. Other returning starters include Currie Byrd and Aaron Emmanuel. Emmanuel’s 81 assists led the team and Byrd was fourth on the team with six points per game.

Missouri Western will open the 2015-16 season on November 6th with an exhibition game at Missouri. The Griffons then play four-straight regular season games at home, beginning with the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic November 13th and 14th.

Northwest women’s golf team wins Park University Fall Classic

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State University golf team captured the 2015 Park University Fall Classic team title on Tuesday in Parkville, Mo.

Northwest (673) shot a second round 348 to win the event by 46 strokes. Host Park University was second at 719.

The second round was held at The Deuce at the National Golf Club of Kansas City. The first round was played at the National Golf Club of Kansas City.

Elise McDonough won the event, shooting a 158 for the tournament. She was three strokes ahead of the second place finisher.

She’s the third Bearcat all-time to win an individual tournament title. Cassie Lowell won eight times, Steph Charteris won four times and Kristina D’Angela captured one title.

Nikki McCurdy finished fourth overall with a final score of 167. Taylor Gardner was sixth (172) and Kaleigh Ashen was eighth (176).

There were eight teams and 45 total individuals competing in the event.

Northwest Missouri State will complete the fall season on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Ranger Fall Classic in Enid, Okla. The second round will take place on Monday, Oct. 26.

Northwest soccer scores two late goals to defeat UNK in overtime

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State soccer team scored two goals in the final four minutes of competition to defeat Nebraska Kearney in stunning fashion, 2-1.

The Bearcats improve to 3-7-3 this season and 2-5-1 in the MIAA, while the Lopers drop to 4-7-3 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference.

Katelynn Lindsey scored on both of her shots on goal while anchoring a back line that conceded just one goal.

With the wind at her back, Lindsey stood over a free kick from 35 yards out in the 88th minute. Lindsey chose to put the ball on frame and over the outreached arms of the keeper, leveling the score at one.

Less than two minutes into the overtime period, the Bearcats again drew a foul in their offensive third. Lindsey stepped up to take the free kick, this time from near the left sideline, 30 yards away from the goal. Lindsey sent the ball to the far post. The wind carried it over a scrum of players in the box and over the head of the keeper, giving the Bearcats a stunning 2-1 victory.

Northwest Missouri State will return to the road on Friday when they head to St. Charles, Mo. for a 5 p.m. meeting with the Lindenwood Lions.

Northwest volleyball gets swept at Washburn

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team fell to Washburn University, 3-0, on Friday evening at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.

Northwest falls to 11-7 on the year and 4-4 in MIAA play. Washburn, who is ranked No. 15 by the AVCA, improves to 19-2 and 7-2 in conference action.

Freshman Maddy Bruder recorded a match-high 16 kills. She was one of three Bearcats in double-figures in digs, finishing with 12. Bruder also added three blocks defensively.

Northwest hit .156 for the match and recorded 6.0 blocks.

Miranda Foster had a match-high 18 digs defensively. Foster also added nine kills and a block.  Alexis Williams hit .417 for the match with six kills and three blocks.  Sarah Dannettell had 35 asssits with nine digs, a kill and a block.  Aarika Wittenburg had 13 digs and two assists for Northwest.

The Bearcats will head to Emporia, Kan., to take on Emporia State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in MIAA action.

Bearcat soccer gets blanked by Fort Hays State 3-0

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State soccer team came away empty-handed against Fort Hays State on Friday in Maryville, losing 3-0.

The Bearcats fall to 2-7-3 this season and 1-5-1 against conference opponents, while the Tigers improved their record to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA.

Katelynn Lindsey took three shots in the match.  Elizabeth Lee started in goal for the third straight game, stopping six shots that came her way, including several sliding saves.  Jill Kieffer took two shots, including a shot on goal from outside the box that was saved early in the match.

Northwest took five corner kicks in the match, while the visitors attempted three corners.

The Bearcats are set to host Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday, Oct. 18. First kick is scheduled for noon from Bearcat Pitch.
