Northwest’s Rosewell, Altimires and Quesada earn ITA honors

Northwest2013riggertSKILLMAN, N.J. – Northwest Missouri State University tennis had three individuals honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Friday. Head coach Mark Rosewell was named the Wilson/ITA Central Region Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Bearcats to the MIAA regular season and tournament titles. Graduate Assistant Lluis Altimires was named the ITA Central Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Women’s senior Camila Quesada was named the ITA Most Improved Player of the Year.

Rosewell, who has 1,013 career victories to his name, earned his 25th MIAA Coach of the Year title this season. He has now won 24 MIAA regular season titles, seven MIAA tournament titles and has advanced 34 teams to the NCAA Championship tournament.

Altimires played three seasons for the Bearcats from 2012-14. He is in his first season as Northwest’s graduate assistant.

Quesada returned to the team after missing the 2013-14 season with an injury. The nation’s No. 35 ranked singles player earned second team All-MIAA honors at No. 1 singles. She went 26-7 on the season in singles and 9-1 in MIAA play. In doubles, she went 18-11 and 7-3 in conference action. The MBA student-athlete earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll accolades.

The men’s team will face Concordia (N.Y.) on Wednesday, May 13, in Surprise, Ariz., in the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships. The Bearcat women finished the season at 18-8 overall, placing third in the MIAA regular season and tournament, earning the team’s first NCAA bid since 2009.

Northwest men’s basketball adds William Jewell transfer D’Vante Mosby

NWMSUMARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University head coach Ben McCollum has announced the addition of former William Jewell forward D’Vante Mosby to the Bearcat roster. Mosby, a 6-5 forward, will have two years of eligibility remaining with Northwest.

“D’Vante has a great basketball body and he has the chance to be a great rebounder in our league,” said McCollum. “He has the ability to score in a variety of ways. He is tough and physical in the post and he can finish around the basket with contact. In addition to being able to guard multiple positions, he can shoot the three and put it on the floor. D’Vante has done a great job in the classroom and he is a great person off the floor. We are extremely excited to have D’Vante join our program.”

Mosby was a standout for William Jewell in his two seasons with the Cardinals. As a sophomore he earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) second team honors, averaging 12.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. he had 11 double-doubles on the season. As a freshman, Mosby was the GLVC Freshman of the Year, averaging team bests with 12.4 points and 8.7 rebounds.

A former two-sport standout at Fort Osage High School, Mosby scored over 1,000 points and grabbed over 1,000 rebounds in his prep career. He was an all-state selection in both basketball and football. He was a three time All-Area selection and was named Suburban League all four seasons. As a senior, he earned second team All-Metro honors.

Bearcat men defeat UNK in opening round of NCAA Central Regional

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State University men’s tennis team beat Nebraska-Kearney in the opening round of the NCAA Central Region Tournament, 5-3.

The No. 19 ranked Bearcats move to 19-6 overall with the win while the No. 23 Lopers end the season at 20-5.

Northwest is now 15-17 all time in NCAA Tournament history.

Fin Glowick provided the Bearcats with a pair of points. He and Josef Altmann won at No. 3 doubles. Glowick then clinched the victory with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles.

The Bearcats trailed the Lopers, 2-1, following the doubles matches.

In singles, Romain Boissinot, Mauro Tete and Hicham Azzaoui all provided the Bearcats with wins.

Glowick closed out the match at No. 6. Altmann was tied at one set a piece at No. 5 singles when the match was called.

Northwest women fall to UNK in first round of NCAA tennis tournament

The Northwest Missouri State University women’s tennis team fell to Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday, 5-4, in the first round of the NCAA Central Region Tournament.

The match was played in Tahlequah, Okla., at the Northeastern State University Tennis Complex.

Northwest, who entered the match ranked No. 49 in the nation, ends the season with a 21-8 overall record. UNK improves to 22-7.

The Bearcats got a doubles win from Lorena Rivas Jarolim and Camila Quesada at the No. 1 position but still entered the singles competition down, 2-1.

In singles, Quesdada, Rivas Jaorlim and Aniek Kolen won their matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.

The Bearcats are now 19-16 all time in NCAA play.

Northwest Missouri State tennis teams each ranked in the top 50

Northwest2013riggertMARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University men’s and women’s tennis teams were each ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national and regional rankings. The Northwest men remained the nation’s No. 19 ranked team while the women entered the polls at No. 49. MIAA Player of the Year Romain Boissinot was ranked No. 33 nationally while senior and second-team All-MIAA performer Camila Quesada was ranked No. 35.

In the regional polls, the Northwest men were ranked No. 2. Boissinot earned the No. 2 singles ranking while Mauro Tete was No. 14 and Alvaro Riveros was No. 19. The doubles team of Tete and Aymeric Autones was ranked No. 9 in the Central Region.

On the women’s side, the Bearcats were ranked No. 3 in the Central Region. Queseada earned the No. 2 rank in singles and was ranked No. 7 in doubles with Lorena Rivas Jarolim.

For the 13th time under MIAA Coach of the Year Mark Rosewell, both men’s and women’s teams qualified for the NCAA Regional round. The women will face Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, in Tahlequah, Okla. The winner of that match will face the winner of Northeastern State and Augustana at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4. The Northwest men will host Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday in Maryville, Mo., at 1 p.m.

Northwest Missouri State tennis earns multiple MIAA honors

Northwest2013riggertKANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s and women’s tennis teams were each well represented in the MIAA postseason awards which were released by the league office on Wednesday. Northwest sophomore Romain Boissinot was the MIAA Men’s Player of the Year and head coach Mark Rosewell was named MIAA Coach of the Year for the 25th time.

Boissinot, last season’s MIAA Freshman of the Year, was one of three first team All-MIAA selections for the Bearcats. Josef Altmann earned first team honors at No. 5 singles and Fin Glowick was first team at No. 6 singles. Glowick and Altmann were also awareded first team honors at No. 3 doubles. Hicham Azzaoui earned second team honors at No. 4 singles while Mauro Tete and Aymeric Autones earned second team honors at No. 2 doubles. Earning honorable mention accolades were Tete (No. 2 singles) and Alvaro Riveros (No. 3 singles). Riveros and Boissinot were honorable mention at No. 1 doubles.

Camila Quesada earned second team honors at No. 1 singles, as did Aniek Kolen at No. 4 singles and Marianne Hull at No. 6 singles. Earning honorable mention for Northwest were Lorena Rivas Jarolim (No. 2 singles), Margaux Jaquet (No. 3 singles) and Stephanie Mannix (No. 5 singles). Quesada and Rivas Jarolim earned honorable mention honors at No. 1 doubles, as did Mannix and Kolen at No. 3 doubles.

Both men’s and women’s teams earned NCAA Tournament bids. The Bearcat men will host Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday, May 5, at 1 p.m. The Northwest women will travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to face Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m.

Northwest Missouri State tennis teams earn NCAA Tournament bids

Northwest2013riggertMARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University men’s and women’s tennis teams each earned bids to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night. It marks the 33rd and 34th times a Bearcat team has qualified under head coach Mark Rosewell, who has now earned 1,012 career victories in 33 years as a head coach.

The Northwest women earned the No. 3 seed in the Central Region and will face No. 6 seed Nebraska Kearney on Monday, May 4, in Tahlequah, Okla. No. 2 seed Northeastern State will play No. 7 seeded Augustana in the first round with the winners to meet on Tuesday, May 5. The women hold a 19-15 record in the tournament all time, last qualifying in 2009. This season, the Lopers and the Bearcats met twice, with Northwest claiming a 5-4 victory on April 17 in Maryville and a 5-3 win in the consolation final of the MIAA Tournament in Springfield, Mo., on April 26.

The Bearcat men earned the team’s 18th NCAA Tournament bid as the Central Region’s No. 2 seed and MIAA automatic bids. All time, Northwest is 14-17 in the tournament, and has qualified each year since 2006. The men will host No. 3 seed Nebraska-Kearney in the first round in Maryville, Mo., with the winner advancing to the next round in Surprise, Ariz., starting on May 13. The Bearcats and the Lopers have met twice this year, both resulting in Northwest victories. The teams met in Maryville on April 17, a 6-3 Northwest win. The two teams also met in the MIAA Championship match on April 26 in Springfield, Mo., with the Bearcats winning, 5-0.

This marks the 12th time coach Rosewell has sent both teams to the NCAA Tournament in the same season. Match times for the women along with match date and time for the men will be released at a later date.

Northwest women announce additions of student-athletes for 2015-2016

Northwest2013riggertMARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University head women’s basketball coach Michael Smith has announced the additions of five student-athletes to the 2015-16 Bearcat roster. Arbrieal Benson (Omaha, Neb.), Tyra Moore (Springfield, Mo.), Mallory McAdrews (St. Joseph, Mo.), Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia) and Carlie Wilhelmi (Center Point, Iowa) will all enroll at Northwest Missouri State for the 2015-16 academic year.

“I thought we were able to identify quality individuals who will be able to fill some specific needs for us moving forward,” said Smith. “The addition of these student-athletes combined with our returners fits in well with what we want the future of our program to be.”

Benson, a 5-9 guard, was a standout performer for Omaha Benson High School. She was named second team all-metro and earned honorable mention all-state accolades. She averaged 10.0 points per game.

Moore was a first team all-conference and first team all-district performer for Parkview High School. The 5-7 guard averaged 21.0 points per game.

Benton High School product McAndrews earned first team all-city, all-conference, all-district and all-state honors. The 5-7 guard averaged 13.0 points per game.

Howe joins the Bearcats after spending the previous two seasons at Marshalltown Community College. The 5-8 guard was a first team all-region performer and averaged 17.0 points per game.

Fort Scott Community College’s Carlie Wilhelmi will be a junior for the Bearcats this fall. The 6-2 post earned honorable mention all-conference honors, averaging 9.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Earlier this season, coach Smith announced the additions of Macy Williams (Tabor, Iowa), Maria Dentlinger (Arcadia, Iowa), Ashley Nelson (LaVista, Neb.) and Elexis Martinez (Omaha, Neb.).

Bearcat softball ends regular season with sweep of Washburn

The Northwest Missouri State softball team picked up a pair of victories in the regular season finale against Washburn Sunday afternoon in Maryville.

The Bearcats used a pair of solo home runs and held off a late Ichabod rally to take game one, 3-2.

Northwest plated five runs in the second inning of game two and never looked back, taking the nightcap, 7-4.

The Bearcats improve their record to 24-22 overall and 16-10 in the conference, while Washburn dropped to 27-22 this season and 14-12 in the MIAA.

The twin bill was the final home game for Bearcat seniors Stephanie Mark, Paige Blythe, Abbie Vitosh and Lindsey Holt.

In game one, Sarah Baldwin earned her tenth victory this season after giving up just four hits in 6.2 innings pitched while striking out four Ichabod batters.

Senior Paige Blythe picked up the save after inducing a harmless ground ball to Chantel Adams at third for the final out.

Adams crushed her ninth home run of the season in her first at-bat, while Stephanie Mark had a solo home run of her own to lead off the fourth inning.  Cassidy Lee singled and scored a run, and Rebecca Maher drove in her 33rd run this year with a single.

In game two, Kendle Schieber went the distance for the Bearcats, striking out eight after giving up five hits and just one walk. At the plate the junior finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.

Jessica Rawie collected two RBI on a pair of base hits, Abigail Gilson crushed a double down the left field line in her first at bat, driving in one run and ultimately coming around to score,  and Chantel Adams scored a pair of runs after reaching base on a double and a walk.

Northwest Missouri State will travel to Overland Park, Kan. on Thursday, April 30 for the MIAA Tournament. The team will play two games on Thursday with the first round beginning at 6 p.m.

Northwest men’s tennis wins MIAA Tournament Championship

The Northwest Missouri State University men’s tennis team claimed the 2015 MIAA Tournament Championship on Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.

The win moves Northwest to 18-6 overall while UNK falls to 20-4.

Northwest, who won the outright MIAA regular season title, claimed its sixth-straight tournament title and remains the only MIAA team to win the postseason tournament.

Under head coach Mark Rosewell, the Northwest men have claimed 12 regular season titles and six tournament titles.

The Bearcats claimed all three doubles points in dramatic fashion. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams were down a break but made a comeback to win in tiebreakers.
