Nebraska pulls away late to defeat Indiana 66-57

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — James Palmer scored 15 points Tuesday night as Nebraska beat Indiana 66-57, allowing the Huskers the resume their NCAA Tournament pursuit.

Nebraska (21-9, 12-5 Big Ten) bounced back from a Sunday loss at Illinois that stopped a six-game winning streak. Isaac Copeland added 13 points, and Isaiah Roby contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

Indiana (16-13, 9-8) had a four-game winning streak snapped, hurting itself with 19 turnovers.

Indiana started a 10-2 run in the second half with back-to-back 3-point plays by Justin Smith and Juwan Morgan, taking a 41-37 lead with 13:50 remaining. Nebraska answered with 10 straight, including a 3-point play and two free throws by Evan Taylor, and led the rest of the way.

The Huskers, who tied a school record with their 12th conference win, finished off the Hoosiers when Palmer had two free throws and a dunk during an 8-0 run that made it 64-53 with 1:51 remaining.

Smith and Robert Johnson paced Indiana with 16 points apiece.

Indiana somehow emerged with a halftime lead despite a shaky first 20 minutes, going ahead 26-25 after Devonte Green and Johnson scored on hard drives in the final 90 seconds. Nebraska had a chance to regain the lead it held for much of the first half, but Roby missed a 3-point shot as time ran out.

Nebraska had taken a 25-22 lead on a 3-point basket by Thomas Allen with 1:52 remaining, but the Huskers made just 3 of 15 from behind the arc in the first half and did not attempt a free throw.

Indiana also hurt itself with nine turnovers but never trailed by more than five points in the half, facing its largest deficit at 9-4 after a Roby dunk.

BIG PICTURE

Indiana: The Hoosiers had built some late-season momentum by beating four consecutive Big Ten lower-division teams. They will try to rebound with a Friday night home game against Ohio State that concludes their regular-season schedule.

Nebraska: The NCAA tourney hopes remain fragile, but Nebraska picked itself up nicely after its costly loss at Illinois. The play of Palmer, a junior, continues to be an important part of one of the Huskers’ best seasons in years.

K-State women fall at home to West Virginia

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State looked to sweep the season series against West Virginia on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum, but the Mountaineers pocketed a 75-66 win. The Wildcats have now lost three straight.

K-State (13-14, 5-11 Big 12) had four players in double figures led by sophomore forward Peyton Williams with 18 points, six rebounds, a career-high tying five steals and a blocked shot. Williams has 13 games this season with 15 or more points and five or more rebounds.

Junior guard Kayla Goth finished with 14 points, five assists and two steals. For the season, Goth has dished out 178 assists and ranks fifth in school history. She is the third player in program history to hand out 175 or more assists in a single season.

Also in double figures were senior forward Kaylee Page with 16 points, while freshman guard Rachel Ranke chipped in with 11 points.

West Virginia (20-8, 8-8) saw all five starters in double figures led by Teana Muldrow with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Katrina King added 16 points and nine rebounds.

After Kansas State dashed out to a quick 5-0 lead, West Virginia responded with a 12-0 run to build a 12-5 lead with 5:16 remaining in the opening quarter. The Mountaineers built their lead on the back of 3 three-pointers.

K-State pulled back to within one, 12-11, as K-State used a 6-0 run to close the gap. Williams finished off a post move with a layup. Cymone Goodrich then used a right lane line drive to card a layup, and Goth then completed a layup of her own with 3:51 to play to bring K-State within one.

Goth’s layup would be the final points of the quarter for K-State, as the Wildcats would go scoreless for the final 3:50 of the quarter and West Virginia would hold a 17-11 lead at the end of one.

The Wildcats pulled back within two points on a pair of occasions in the second quarter, but West Virginia was able to rebuild its lead to five, 25-20, with 3:54 left following a banked in jumper from Muldrow.

Muldrow’s jumper helped West Virginia end the first half on a 7-4 run and hold a 30-24 lead at the break.

Kansas State shot 35.5 percent (11-of-31) from the field, but were held to a 1-of-9 effort from beyond the arc including seven straight misses to end the half. The Mountaineers shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the floor.

West Virginia extended its lead to 10, 41-31, in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Wildcats 3-point drought extended to 10 straight misses before Page knocked down a 3-pointer at 7:02 of the third quarter.

Page would knock down another three during a 7-2 K-State run to force a West Virginia timeout and pull K-State to within five, 43-38, with 4:59 remaining in the third stanza.

West Virginia would end the third quarter on an 8-3 run to hold a 51-41 lead entering the fourth quarter. King scored six of the Mountaineers’ eight points during the run.

The Mountaineers built a 15-point advantage, 59-44, with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter. An 8-3 run by K-State provided life, as the Wildcats pulled to within nine, 61-52 following a Page 3-pointer with 6:15 remaining.

K-State was able to narrow the game to six, 65-59, with 3:33 remaining. Ranke connected on a layup following a K-State timeout, then added her second 3-pointer of the night following a K-State defensive stop. Williams buried her only two free throws of the night to trim the deficit to six.

The Mountaineers didn’t allow K-State to gain any more ground, outscoring K-State 10-7 in the final 3:14 of the fourth quarter to secure the win.

West Virginia finished the night shooting 54.2 percent (26-of-48) including 60.0 percent or better in the final three quarters. K-State checked in with a 39.0 percent effort (23-of-59). For the 13th time this season, K-State recorded 10 or more steals, ending the night with 11.

Kansas State will conclude its 2017-18 regular season home schedule on Saturday, as the Wildcats host Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at 3 p.m. In a pregame ceremony at 2:45 p.m., of Saturday’s game, K-State will recognize members of the 1968-69 team, the first intercollegiate women’s basketball team in program history.

The Jayhawks (22-6, 11-4 Big 12) controlled things early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes into the game and forcing Lon Kruger to burn a timeout before the first media break. The Sooners (16-11, 6-9 Big 12) never recovered.

Nebraska gets upset at Illinois 72-66

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Close games have not gone well for Illinois this season. The Illini have lost nine games by single digits, including three losses in overtime and one at the buzzer against Nebraska on Jan. 15.

But in a rematch Sunday afternoon, the Illini got their revenge in a 72-66 victory over the Cornhuskers, powered by Leron Black.

Black poured in a career-high 28 points and snagged seven rebounds to help Illinois outlast Nebraska. He scored 17 points in 12 minutes in the first half, including a stretch in which he made seven consecutive field goals.

“My teammates were finding me in all the right spots,” Black said. “I had a lot of open shots. They were looking for me and getting me the ball.”

There were six ties and nine lead changes during the game, but the deciding basket came from Black. He nailed a turnaround, fadeaway jumper with two minutes left that put the Illini ahead by three and brought the State Farm Center crowd to its feet.

On the Illini’s final two possessions Trent Frazier and Mark Smith knocked down four free throws to secure the win.

Illinois (13-15, 3-12 Big Ten) shot 62 percent from the field and made 7 of 9 from behind the arc to outscore Nebraska 43-36 in the first half. But after the break, the Cornhuskers used a 16-4 run to climb back in it for a five-point lead.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, but Black proved to be too much. He knocked down 3 of 5 from behind the arc in his second consecutive 20-point performance.

“Huge night from Leron,” coach Brad Underwood said. “Everyone got to see how (his game) has expanded. He shot a couple off the dribble today, he hit a couple threes. Really pleased with the way he played.”

Frazier and Kipper Nichols were the only other Illini to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points apiece.

Isaac Copeland led the way with 17 points for Nebraska (20-9, 11-5), who lost for the just the second time in its past 10 games.

“We had just kind of gone to sleep (in the first half),” coach Tim Miles. “We hadn’t practiced that great coming in and we played that way.”

BIG PICTURE

Glynn Watson Jr., Nebraska’s third leading scorer, finished with just three points on 1-of-9 shooting. The loss snapped the Cornhuskers six-game winning streak.

Illinois’ slight win should give Underwood’s young squad some confidence moving forward as it prepares to close out the regular season.

INJURED STARTER

Michael Finke missed his third consecutive game with a concussion. The Illinois forward has started in 25 games this season and is the Illini’s fourth leading scorer at 9.6 points per game.

FRESHMAN HISTORY

Frazier has scored in double-figures in 16 of Illinois’ last 18 games. He’s averaging 12.3 points this year which is the most by an Illini freshman since Dee Brown during the 2002-03 season.

QUOTABLE

“You talk about having pride? You talk about feeling good? That’s everything we have to be about,” Underwood said regarding a loose ball scrum in the second half. “That was three, four guys on the floor all fighting to win a game. Didn’t care about a little burn from the floor, didn’t care about getting knocked. Tonight I knew we were in good shape when we were to that point because that is selfless. That was the play of the night in my opinion.”

UP NEXT

Nebraska returns home to take on Indiana. The Hoosiers are led by Juwan Morgan, who is ranked eighth in the Big Ten in scoring at 16.6 points per game.

Illinois will hit the road and face Michigan State on Tuesday. The No. 2 Spartans have a 10-game winning streak.

Mizzou baseball loses final game against Florida International

MIAMI – Mizzou Baseball came up short on Sunday (Feb. 18), falling to Florida International, 11-5, failing to complete the season-opening series sweep. Mizzou went on top, 5-2, with five runs in the fifth inning but gave the lead right back in the bottom half of the frame. Mizzou falls to 2-1 on the season.

Mizzou hit six batters in the game and that was a key reason for the Panthers’ four-run fifth that sank the Tigers. Mizzou stranded nine men on base in the loss.

RS sophomore Cody Siebenberger (Smithton, Ill.) took the loss while FIU RHP Steven Casey earned the win. Junior OF Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) tallied a career-high four hits while sophomore 1B Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) walked in four of his five plate appearances, tallying an RBI and a run. Junior OF Zach Hanna (Shawnee, Kan.) had a three-run, bases-loaded double in Mizzou’s five-run fifth as well.

TURNING POINT
After Mizzou took a 5-2 lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, three coming on a Zach Hanna (Shawnee, Kan.) double, the Panthers responded with a four-spot in their half of the frame. That gave FIU a 6-5 lead that it never surrendered. DH Christian Khawam delivered the go-ahead hit, a two-run double. FIU then tacked on five more in the eighth inning. The Panthers then iced the game with five in the bottom of the eighth.

TOP TIGERS
– Junior OF Zach Hanna drove in a career-high three runs with his bases-clearing double in the fifth inning.

– Sophomore Kameron Misner walked three times in the game, earning an RBI and scoring a run. He walked eight times in the series.
