Kansas signs five-star guard Quentin Grimes

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Five-star guard Quentin Grimes has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men’s basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced Wednesday.

A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Grimes (6-foot-5, 195 pounds) is ranked No. 11 by Rivals.com, No. 13 by ESPN100 and No. 16 by 247Sports.

Grimes averaged 28.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game his junior year at College Park High School in 2016-17. His sophomore year he averaged 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per contest.

“We feel Quentin Grimes is as good as guard as there is in high school basketball,” Self said. “He’s got great size. He’s got point guard vision. He can really handle the ball. He reminds me of a guy that I coached at Illinois, Deron Williams, but probably a better scorer than Deron at this stage.”

Grimes played his AAU basketball for Basketball University in Houston for coach Rhossi Carron.

“We think Quentin will be an impact guy for us and be one of the premier guards in the country early in his career,” Self said. “Jerrance (Howard) was the point man with him and we’ve seen him play a lot, not only through his AAU program but also with his high school team. He’s one of the more complete players that we will have recruited in our time here. I anticipate the transition from high school to college pretty seamless for him.”

Grimes becomes the fourth signee for Kansas in the 2018 early signing period. He joins forward Silvio De Sousa, guard Devon Dotson and forward/center David McCormack.

“We are very excited about this class,” Self said. “The four we’ve signed are high IQ basketball guys that understand how to play with other good players.”

2017-18 Kansas Men’s Basketball Signees
Silvio De Sousa – F, 6-9, 245, Luanda, Angola (IMG Academy [Fla.])
Devon Dotson – G, 6-2, 175, Charlotte, N.C. (Providence Day School)
Quentin Grimes – G, 6-5, 195, The Woodlands, Texas (College Park High School)
David McCormack – F/C, 6-10, 285, Norfolk, Va. (Oak Hill Academy)

K-State handles UMKC Tuesday 72-51

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Barry Brown scored 14 points to help Kansas State beat cold-shooting Missouri-Kansas City 72-51 on Tuesday night.

Xavier Sneed had 13 points and Dean Wade and Mawdo Sallah scored 11 points apiece for Kansas State.

After both teams struggled to get baskets early going, the Wildcats (2-0) put together a game-breaking 15-2 run in the final five minutes of the first half to give them a 14-point lead at the half.

The Kangaroos (1-2) struggled shooting for the entire night as they had multiple scoring droughts that would reach three or four minutes at a time. As a team they shot below 30 percent (13 of 50) for the second time in three games this season. Isaiah Ross was the lone player to score in double figures for UMKC with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

BIG PICTURE: Kansas State moves to 2-0 on the season but struggled from the field, shooting 41 percent, which seemed to be contagious as UMKC struggled as well. We’re about a week away from Kansas State’s first tough test of the season when they play Arizona State in the Las Vegas Invitational on November 23.

Kansas duo named to Wooden Award preseason Top 50

LOS ANGELES – Kansas senior Devonte’ Graham and sophomore guard Malik Newman have been named to Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Tuesday. Last year, KU’s Frank Mason III won the 2017 Wooden Award.

Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious individual honor.

The 2017-18 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, Graham is one of two returning starters for Kansas this upcoming season. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native is also on the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list and is a two-time All-Big 12 selection, earning second-team honors last season and honorable mention accolades in 2015-16. Graham is KU’s leading returning scorer from 2016-17 at 13.4 points per game, which was 13th in the league. He ranked third in the Big 12 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.3, second in 3-point field goals made per game (2.6) and sixth in assists (4.1). Graham enters the 2017-18 season with 1,075 career points, which is 45th on the KU record list. His 186 3-pointers made are eighth on the KU career chart.

The 2017-18 Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and preseason honorable mention all-conference selection, Newman transferred to Kansas from Mississippi State following the 2015-16 season. The Jackson, Mississippi, native averaged 11.3 points and started 22 of 29 games at Mississippi State his freshman season. He scored a career-high 25 points against Ole Miss (Jan. 23, 2016) which included seven 3-point field goals made.

Missouri’s Cunningham named to Wooden Award preseason Top 30

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women’s Basketball junior Sophie Cunningham is one of 30 student-athletes named to the John R. Wooden Award Women’s Preseason Top 30, as announced Tuesday on ESPN’s Sportscenter. The list is comprised of student-athletes who are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor.

The list is chosen by a preseason poll of women’s college basketball media members. This is Cunningham’s first time being named to the Top 30. She is one of six players from the Southeastern Conference on the list. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2018 John R. Wooden Award Women’s Player of the Year presented by Wendy’s, the nation’s top individual honor.

Players not chosen to the preseason list are eligible for the Wooden Award midseason list, late season list and the National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Voting will open prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.

The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2018 John R. Wooden Award will be presented during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on Friday, April 6, 2018.

In October, Cunningham was named Preseason First Team All-SEC by both the league’s coaches and the media. She was also named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 2018 Cheryl Miller Award watch list, an honor that goes to the nation’s top small forward.

In 2016-17, Cunningham averaged a team-best 17.5 points per game, which ranked fourth in the SEC. She led Mizzou in total points, points per game, assists per game, free throw percentage, field goal percentage and total field goals made for the season. Cunningham finished with 10 20-point performances in 2016-17 and has 20 such outings in only 63 career games. She ended the regular season with four consecutive 20-point performances, racking up a pair of National Player of the Week awards.

Cunningham earned Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention recognition and First Team All-SEC honors after leading Mizzou to 22 wins, a third-place finish in the Southeastern Conference and a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time since 1985 and 1986. She steered Mizzou to wins in back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history.
