Porter limited in debut, but Mizzou handles Iowa State 74-59

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men’s Basketball was able to start its 2017-18 season with a resounding win, beating Iowa State 74-59 in front of a capacity crowd at Mizzou Arena Friday night. The Tigers relied heavily on the three-point shot and were great when they went to it, shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc. Head coach Cuonzo Martin’s squad was led by junior forward Kevin Puryear (Blue Springs, Mo.), who poured in 17 points on 86 percent shooting. Puryear came out with something to prove on opening night, leading the Tigers in both points and rebounds (8) for the ninth time in his career.

TURNING POINT

Coming out of the halftime break, Iowa State mounted a run, using a 10-4 spurt to cut the Mizzou lead to single digits for the first time since the 9:38 mark in the first half. Freshman forward Jeremiah Tilmon (East St. Louis, Ill.) was able to answer, though, putting down a hook shot off of an offensive rebound. After a defensive stop, Tilmon again went to work down low, stepping around his defender on the base line for a layup. After a stretch of back-and-forth action, graduate transfer guard Kassius Robertson (Toronto, Ontario) knocked down a three coming off of a brush screen, which extended Mizzou’s lead to 15 points. After another strong defensive stand, junior guard Jordan Geist (Fort Wayne, Ind.) recovered a loose ball, and splashed a pull-up three on a two-on-one fast break, inflating the Black & Gold lead to 18 points. The Tigers’ lead would never again dip below 15 points.

TOP TIGERS

– Freshman forward Jeremiah Tilmon owned the interior, scoring 14 points on 78 percent shooting. Tilmon also pulled down seven rebounds, two of which came on the offensive glass.

– Graduate transfer guard Kassius Robertson played a balanced game in his Mizzou debut, scoring 11 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out two assists.

– Senior forward Jordan Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) had 15 points on 50 percent shooting, including a thunderous two-handed slam that took the top off of a sold-out Mizzou Arena.

NOTES
– Senior forward Kevin Puryear set a new career-high in steals, with three on the night. It was also a team-high.

– Puryear led the Tigers in points and rebounds for the ninth time in his career and for the third time in his last four games dating back to last season.

– Mizzou Arena sold out for the first time since March 5, 2013, against Arkansas.

– The win against the Cyclones tonight marked the Tigers’ 150th all-time win against Iowa State.

– With Coach Martin’s win in his debut, Mizzou coaches moved to 17-2 all-time in debut games.

UP NEXT
The Tigers are set to host Wagner on Monday, November 13, at Mizzou Arena. The tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CST.

MWSU suffers 1-0 loss to SW Oklahoma State in NCAA soccer tournament

MANKATO, Minn. – The greatest season in Griffon soccer history came to a close on Friday afternoon with Missouri Western (17-5) losing 1-0 to Southwestern Oklahoma State (13-3-4) in the first round of the NCAA Central Region Championships.

Despite being outshout 12-4 in the first half, the Griffons went to halftime scoreless with the Bulldogs who had scored 56 goals coming into the game. The nation’s leading scorer, Alimata Rabo, scored her 28thgoal of the seaon in the 66th minute when she beat Sarah Lyle to the goal. Missouri Western had chances to answer, outshooting Southwestern Oklahoma 7-4 in the second half, but couldn’t find the equalizer.

Vick leads No. 4 Kansas to 92-56 win over Tennessee State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Lagerald Vick scored 23 points, Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 and fourth-ranked Kansas routed Tennessee State 92-56 on Friday night in its lone tuneup before facing No. 5 Kentucky in the Champions Classic.

Devonte Graham added 10 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds for the short-handed Jayhawks, who played without five-star prospect Billy Preston. The touted freshman forward was suspended for the opener after he missed curfew Thursday night and failed to show up for class Friday.

That wasn’t the only message coach Bill Self sent, either. Mississippi State transfer Malik Newman lost his starting job to freshman Marcus Garrett after a lousy practice this week.

Newman still finished with 12 points off the bench as the hot-shooting Jayhawks won their 43rd straight home opener. Garrett added 10 points while 7-footer Udoka Azubuike, who missed most of last year with a wrist injury, contributed 13 points and six boards in his return.

Darreon Reddick had 20 points and Delano Spencer had 14 for the Tigers, who watched the longer, stronger Jayhawks use a 14-0 run in the opening minutes to build a 56-27 lead by halftime.

Kansas made its first nine shots and wound up shooting 60 percent for the game.

The Jayhawks got sloppy early in the second half, turning the ball over five times in a 5-minute span, and their seven-man rotation appeared to wear down. But their opponent from the Ohio Valley was still overmatched, unable to string together enough buckets to make a run.

That probably won’t be the case against the Wildcats on Tuesday night.

Kansas and Kentucky are playing the nightcap of the annual doubleheader in Chicago, a matchup of two of college basketball’s bluebloods. It should be an early barometer for teams with national championship aspirations, and an intimidating venue for Preston to make his collegiate debut.

The Wildcats overcame a sluggish start to beat Utah Valley in their opener Friday night.

BIG PICTURE

Tennessee State was overmatched in just about every facet, though the Tigers never gave up. That should serve them well not only against Texas and Purdue later in the non-conference season but when they open conference play in late December.

Kansas had a depth issue Friday night that should be somewhat assuaged later this season. Preston is due back next week, and Arizona State transfer Sam Cunliffe becomes eligible in December. But if injuries hit this season, the Jayhawks could require massive big minutes from a short bench.

UP NEXT

Tennessee State gets a substantially easier test next in NAIA member Reinhardt on Monday night.

Kansas heads to Chicago to face the No. 5 Wildcats, who won both previous meetings in the Champions Classic. They’ll take the floor after top-ranked Duke plays No. 2 Michigan State on Tuesday night.

Missouri State begins season with road win at Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Newcomer J.T. Miller led five Missouri State players in double-figures to help the Bears to an 85-80 opening-night victory at Western Kentucky here Friday.

Alize Johnson played just 14 minutes but accounted for 13 points and 8 rebounds, including four key free throws in the final 32.1 seconds.

After the Bears (1-0) built a 22-point lead out of the gates, WKU whittled its way back with ample free throw opportunities and made a game of it late.

With the Bears up 66-57 after a layup by Miller at the 8:30 mark, WKU went on a 7-0 run in the span of 100 seconds to make it a two-point game. But a gutsy layup by Reggie Scurry followed on MSU’s next possession to give coach Paul Lusk’s club some breathing room.

Inside three minutes to go, WKU got a free throw from Darius Thompson to pull within 72-70, but a triple by Ronnie Rousseau III silenced the crowd of more than 5,200 at E.A. Diddle Arena with 2:07 on the clock.

Rousseau scored again on MSU’s next possession and made it 77-72, but the home club did not stop coming with a dunk by Dwight Coleby and a trey by Thompson, the latter of which made it 81-77 with 24.1 to go.

After Johnson missed the second of a two-shot foul chance at the 21.1 mark, Lamonte Bearden drained his third 3-pointer of the night to make it 82-80 with 15 ticks to play.

The Bears dug deep and responded with back-to-back defensive stops, sandwiched in between free throws by Ryan Kreklow and Johnson to seal the five-point win.

Scurry and Rousseau each scored 12 for the Bears, and Obediah Church added 11 points.

MSU shot 55.7 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Hilltoppers, 38-34, on the night.

Western Kentucky finished 28-of-36 (.778) at the foul line and had 12 fewer field goals than the visitors.

Bearden led WKU with 24 points.

Missouri State jumped out of the gates like a Kentucky thoroughbred, building a 26-4 advantage in the first eight minutes and forcing two Hilltopper timeouts.

The game shifted slightly after that with WKU picking up 14 of its next 18 points at the free throw line over the next eight-plus minutes. A charity shot by Thompson with 3:43 to go in the opening stanza made it a 38-22 contest.

After a dunk by Scurry built MSU’s lead back to 16 with just under three minutes to play in the half, freshman Mustafa Lawrence nailed a triple from the left side to give the Bears a 43-26 advantage at the 1:55 mark.

With MSU being whistled for 18 fouls in the first 20 minutes, the Bears’ went deep down the bench for the stretch, and WKU took advantage with a pair of 3-pointers and another couple of free throws to make it 45-34 at the midway point.

The Bears return to JQH Arena on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. start against Southern University in their home opener.
