Missouri Western volleyball upsets No. 7 Central Oklahoma in five sets

EDMOND, Okla. – Griffon volleyball (12-9) shocked No. 7 Central Oklahoma (20-2) 3-2. Missouri Western snapped Central Oklahoma’s 17 match winning streak and 23 match home winning streak.

GIANT KILLERS
MWSU has beaten a ranked team in each of the last three seasons under head coach Marian Carbin. It is also the highest ranked team MWSU has knocked off since Oct. 18, 2014 when it beat No. 5 Washburn 3-2 in Topeka, Kansas.

STEALING ONE ON THE ROAD
Missouri Western did something that no other MIAA team has done since 2015. MWSU’s 25-19 second set win was the first set UCO had lost in 39 consecutive sets of MIAA play at Hamilton Fieldhouse. The last MIAA set and last match the Bronchos lost at home was on Nov. 21, 2015 in the MIAA Tournament to Central Missouri. The Griffons are also the first team to take Central Oklahoma to five sets in Edmond, Oklahoma since Oct. 12, 2015 when No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney lost to UCO.

BLOCKED!
The Griffons out blocked the Bronchos 10-6 in the five-set victory. MWSU finished with two solo blocks and 16 block assists. It is tied for the second most total blocks in a match this season for Missouri Western.

TEAM EFFORT
Five different players ended with double-digit kills for MWSU. Ali Tauchen led the way with 16 kills as three other Griffons added 13 kills apiece. As a team, Missouri Western finished with 69 kills, two more than Central Oklahoma. Lauren Murphy assisted 63 of those kills, the third most in a five-set match in program history.

Bearcat volleyball duo hit milestones in win at Pittsburg State

– The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team swept Pittsburg State, 3-0, on Friday at John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan.
– The Bearcats improve to 11-9 on the year and 5-3 in MIAA play. The Gorillas fall to 3-17 overall and 0-8 in conference action.
– Junior Maddy Bruder recorded her 1,000th career kill in the match and classmate Olivia Nowakowski carded her 1,000th career dig.
– Bruder finished the match with a match-high 12 kills to go along with 12 digs, two blocks and a service ace.
– Nowakowski had 16 digs with an assist.

Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest won all three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20.
– The Bearcats held the Gorillas to a .092 attack percentage. Northwest also recorded seven aces while PSU had just one.
– Sofia Schleppenbach had 11 kills with four service aces, two blocks and two digs.
– Gaby da Silva had nine digs to go along with a pair of service aces and a block.
– Morgan Lewis added six kills with three blocks.
– Sarah Dannettell had 17 assists with two blcoks.
– Maddy Ahrens had 15 assists with six digs.

Key Northwest Sequences
– The second set the Bearcats jumped out to an early lead. After a PSU attacking error, Schleppenbach had a service ace to make it 2-0. Sunderman and Lewis tallied back-to-back kills, pushing the lead to 4-0. After a Gorilla attack error and a bad set, PSU called a timeout trailing, 6-0. The Gorillas got their first point off a kill but another bad set, a kil from Lewis and another attacking error put Northwest up, 9-1. Pitt State battled back and even got to within one, 17-16, before the Bearcats went on an 8-4 run to close out the set.

– In the third, Pittsburg State took a late 20-19 lead on a kill from Noelle Dooley. But a kill from da Silva tied the match with a kill. With Schleppenbach at the service line, Northwest put away the match. She hit a pair of service aces and then PSU was called for an out of rotation point, giving the Bearcats a 23-20 lead. After a Gorilla attack error, PSU called a timeout as Northwest held match point. Sunderman gave the Bearcats the set off a kill from Ahrens.

MWSU soccer scores three second half goals to defeat Central Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. – Griffon soccer’s first-ever win over Central Oklahoma (5-6-2, 2-2-2) gave Missouri Western (11-2, 5-1) its 11th win of the season, Friday, tying the program record for wins in a season.

The Griffons scored three second half goals to win their fifth MIAA game of the season, 3-0.

MORE HISTORY
The dominant victory was Missouri Western’s first-ever over Central Oklahoma. The Griffons came into Friday’s contest 0-4-1 all-time against the Bronchos. Missouri Western’s win also tied the 2016 program record of 11 wins in a season. Another win this season will tie the most MIAA wins in program history. The Griffons’ eighth shutout of the season also tied a program record set in 2014.

HUGE SECOND HALF
After neither team mustered a goal through the first 45 minutes, the Griffons owned the second half, getting their first goal just three minutes into the second half. Bridget Blessie got the scoring going with a header off a Madeline Cowell corner kick in the 48th minute. Cassidy Menke scored her 12th goal of the season, beating the UCO goal keeper one-one-one in the 76th minute. Sydney Cluck scored the all-important third goal in the 85th minute off an assist from Sara Collins. After being out-shot 7-2 in the first 45 minutes, the Griffons responded with six second half shots to one by UCO. Missouri Western had just one corner kick through the first 45 to four for the Bronchos. The last 45 minutes featured five Griffon corners to none for UCO.

BIG ONE UP NEXT
Missouri Western could create more separation from a crowded pack toward the top of the MIAA with a win on Sunday at Northeastern State (10-1, 4-1). The Griffons and RiverHawks kick off Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Bearcat soccer team falls at Northeastern State

– The Northwest Missouri State University soccer team fell to Northeastern State, 2-1, on Friday at the Dr. Dan F. Deloache Field in Tahlequah, Okla.
– The Bearcats fall to 5-7 on the year and 2-4 in MIAA play. The RiverHawks improve to 11-1 on the year and 5-1 in conference action.
– Kayla Ellis scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the fourth minute as she beat the keeper from 20 yards out under the cross bar.
– Ashley Malloy had seven saves in goal including a penalty kick stop in the 85th minute.

Key Northwest Statistics
– The RiverHawks had goals in the 64th and 83rd minutes.
– Northwest had seven shots with four coming on goal. NSU had 14 shots with nine on goal.
– The Bearcats were called for 12 fouls while the RiverHawks were whistled 13 times.
– Izzy Romano had two shots in the match, one coming on goal.
– Emily Madden and Madie Kruger each recorded shots on goal.
– Danielle Wolfe and Bri Wawiorka each had shots in the match.

Kansas trio earns preseason Big 12 men’s basketball honors

IRVING, Texas – Kansas guards Devonte’ Graham, Malik Newman and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk each garnered recognition on the 2017-18 Preseason All-Big 12 Team as voted on by the league’s men’s basketball coaches, the conference office announced Thursday.

Graham was named the 2017-18 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, while Newman was dubbed the league’s preseason newcomer of the year. Graham was also a preseason all-conference first-team selection, while Newman and Mykhailiuk securing spots on the preseason honorable mention honors. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes in the selection process.

“This is a great honor to be recognized by the coaches, especially with all the great players in the Big 12,” said Graham. “It is also good to see Malik and Svi selected by the coaches. This is a team sport and we are working hard on getting ready for the season.”

Joining Graham on the five-member 2017-18 Preseason All-Big 12 Team are: Jeffrey Carroll (Oklahoma State), Vladimir Brodziansky (TCU), Zach Smith (Texas Tech) and Jevon Carter (West Virginia) with Graham, Carroll and Carter earning unanimous selections. Those student-athletes who received votes, including Newman and Mykhailiuk, received honorable mention recognition. Additionally, Texas’ Mohamed Bamba collected the Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year recognition.

Graham is the eighth Jayhawk in the 21-year history of the Big 12 to be named preseason player of the year and the first since Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins shared the honor in 2009-10. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native is a two-time All-Big 12 selection, earning second team honors last season and honorable mention accolades in 2015-16. Graham is KU’s leading returning scorer from 2016-17 at 13.4 points per game, which was 13th in the league. He ranked third in the Big 12 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.3, second in 3-point field goals made per game (2.6) and sixth in assists (4.1). Graham enters the 2017-18 season with 1,075 career points, which is 45th on the KU record list. His 186 3-pointers made are eighth on the KU career chart.

Newman transferred to Kansas from Mississippi State following the 2015-16 season. The Jackson, Mississippi, native averaged 11.3 points and started 22 of 29 games at Mississippi State his freshman season. He scored a career-high 25 points against Ole Miss (Jan. 23, 2016) which included seven 3-point field goals made. Newman is the third Jayhawk to be named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, joining Tarik Black in 2013-14 and Mario Little in 2008-09.

A two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, Mykhailiuk started 25 of 36 games for KU last year and averaged 9.8 points per contest. Also in 2016-17, the Cherkasy, Ukraine, native ranked eighth in the Big 12 in 3-point field goal percentage (39.8) and eighth in 3-point field goals made (1.9). Mykhailiuk enters his senior season with 122 career 3-pointers made, which is 20th on the KU career list. His 38.1 3-point field goal percentage is 20th on the KU career list.

Preseason top-5 in most publications, Kansas returns two starters and six letterwinners from last season’s 31-5 team which won an NCAA-record-tying 13th-straight regular-season conference title, a streak which started in 2004-05. The 2016-17 Jayhawks also won the CBE Hall of Fame Classic and entered the 2017 NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed, advancing to the Elite Eight. KU opens exhibition play by hosting Pittsburg State on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse.

Missouri Western men tie for first at St. Joseph CC, fall on second playoff hole

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western men’s golf team tied for first place with a 878 in the Holiday Inn/Candlewood Suites MWSU Invite at the St. Joseph Country Club Tuesday. Western fell to Harding on the second hole of a sudden death playoff as the Griffons set a program record for lowest score in a 54-hole event.

MWSU placed everyone inside the top-25 of the individual field. Patrick McCarthy tied for fourth with a 3-over-par 216 to lead the team. Lucas Horseman tied for 13th with a 220, his best finish as a Griffon. Jacob Majeske also had his best tournament finish as he tied for 20th with a 222. Tom Buffington and Kevin Kim both carded a 223 to finish 25th in the event.

Missouri Western fell to Harding on the second hole of a sudden death playoff for the tournament championship. Central Missouri’s John Bonaobra took individual honors with a 2-under-par 211.

MWSU travels to its final fall event Monday in the Washburn Invitational at the Topeka Country Club.

MWSU’s Ong finishes 2nd, Griffons 5th in final event of the fall at Midwest Classic

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Missouri Western women’s golf added another top-five finish to its season total. MWSU shot a 634 to finish fifth in the Midwest Classic at Mules National Golf Club Tuesday.

Shi Qing Ong finished tied for second with a 140 to lead the Griffon in the event. Chong Yong carded a 154 to finish in a tie for seventh place. Tiffanie Yabut trailed Yong by five strokes and ended with a 159. Jenna Kosmatka scored a 172 and Katie Irvin recorded a 177 in the two rounds.

Arkansas Tech won the team title with a 613 and Nebraska Kearney’s Samantha Crawford claimed the individual championship with a 145. The Midwest Classic wrapped up the Griffons fall season.

Former Missouri QB Brad Smith named an SEC Legend

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Football QB Brad Smith is Mizzou’s representative in this year’s 2017 SEC Football Legends Class, a collection of former football standouts who will be honored at events surrounding the SEC Football Championship Game in Atlanta in December.

The 2017 Football Legends Class includes 14 former stars who excelled on the gridiron and helped write the rich history of the sport at their respective institutions. This year’s class includes All-Americans, All-SEC selections and Academic All-Americans. The group represents teams that won National and SEC Championships and are represented in state, school and college football halls of fame.

Smith helped lead the Mizzou program to national prominence in his record-setting quarterback career, as he left holding 69 school, conference and NCAA game, season and career records. Smith became the first player in NCAA Division I-A history to throw for 8,000 yards and rush for 4,000 yards in a career, and he broke the NCAA record for most career rushing yards by a quarterback.

He led Mizzou to a pair of bowl games in 2003 and 2005, as well as 25 wins in four years as a starter. Smith was an outstanding student as he was named a finalist for the prestigious Draddy Award, also known as the Academic Heisman, and was named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. He was a fourth-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2006 NFL Draft, and played in 104 games over nine seasons with the Jets, Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles before retiring after the 2014 season.

The class will be honored at the 2017 SEC Football “Weekend of Champions” Dec. 1-2 in Atlanta, Ga. The annual SEC Legends Dinner presented by AT&T will be held Fri., Dec. 1 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta and the group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sat., Dec. 2.

MWSU’s Lindsay, Basch earn weekly MIAA football honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After helping the Missouri Western football team to its third straight win this past Saturday, Griffon seniors Cody Lindsay and Tyler Basch were rewarded by the MIAA. Lindsay was named MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week while Basch earned MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors.

Lindsay had one of Missouri Western’s two interception returns for a touchdown in the 40-8 win over Lindenwood. His pick-six went 25 yards and went along with a fumble recovery, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, seven total tackles, a pass break up and a quarterback hurry.

Basch was 4-for-4 on field goal and extra point attempts, scoring 16 of Missouri Western’s 40 points. The senior kicker was good from 24, 40, 25 and 31 yards in the game and now leads the MIAA with 12 made field goals this season.

Griffon men’s golf in second place at MWSU Invite at St. Joseph CC

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western men’s golf team is in second place with a 580 after two rounds at the Holiday Inn/Candlewood Suites MWSU Invitational at the St. Joseph Country Club. MWSU scored a 286 in the second round Monday, the lowest total in a round since 2008-09.

Patrick McCarthy led Missouri Western with a 1-over-par 143 and is tied for fifth place. Lucas Horseman finished the day tied for seventh with a 2-over-par 144. Tied for 15th is Kevin Kim as he carded a 4-over-par 146 on the day. Tom Buffington recorded a 147 and Jacob Majeske ended with a 149 to round the Griffon scorecard.

Central Missouri leads the team standings with a 577, three strokes ahead of Missouri Western. UCM’s John Bonaobra is the individual leader with a 2-under-par 140. MWSU tees off the final round on Oct. 10 at 9 a.m.
