Griffons’ rally comes up short in 16-13 loss at Washburn

mwsuTOPEKA, Kan. – It looked like the Missouri Western football team was about to come from behind and win in the closing seconds at Washburn Saturday, then an interception in the end zone ended the Griffons rally as they lost 16-13 to the Ichabods.

Trailing by three, Missouri Western had the ball second and goal at the Washburn 10-yard line with 28 seconds remaining. Then Corey Bertini lofted a pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Washburn’s Keaton Cofield in the back of the end zone, ending the game. The interception was set up by a Bertini pass to Patrick Bolton for 16 yards on a fourth and seven from the Washburn 35-yard line. The fourth down conversion was aided by a roughing the passer penalty by Washburn.

It was the third-straight loss for the Griffons and the third straight week the team had a chance to comeback late in the fourth quarter. Washburn’s defense shut out Missouri Western in the second half and limited the Griffons to 128 yards of offense.

The Griffons jumped out to a 13-3 lead and were driving to take a three-score lead, but a failed fourth down conversion at the Washburn 30-yard line with 3:36 to go in the first half set Washburn up for a long drive that resulted in a Wesley Collins touchdown run – Washburn’s only TD of the game – to make the halftime score 13-10 in favor of Missouri Western.

Two third quarter turnovers by the Griffons resulted in Perry Schmiedeler field goals that first tied the game then gave Washburn the 16-13 lead that would hold.

The Griffon defense held Washburn to 296 yards and one touchdown. Missouri Western’s offense was limited to 361 yards, well below the Griffons’ season average and also just one touchdown. Bertini entered in the second quarter after Skyler Windmiller was injured on the last play of the first quarter. Bertini finished the game 14-28 for 181 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

The loss dropped the Griffons to 4-5 on the season. Missouri Western hosts No. 10 Emporia State next week in the final home game of the 2016 season.

Mizzou falls to Kentucky for fourth consecutive loss

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kentucky running backs Benny Snell and Boom Williams were just infants in 1999 when the Wildcats won three consecutive Southeastern Conference games.

Saturday, their performance helped Kentucky accomplish that feat for the first time in 17 years.

Snell rushed 38 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns, and Williams added 19 carries for 182 yards and a touchdown as the Wildcats defeated Missouri 35-21. It’s the first time in school history two running backs have rushed for at least 175 yards apiece in a conference game.

Snell said he was not fazed in carrying the ball 38 times.

“I’m very happy about this win,” Snell said. “I’m used to this in high school, but I just take a different approach, that I’ve got a better line in front of me, so I just tried to attack the defense.”

“We didn’t play strong enough run defense,” Missouri coach Barry Odom said. “They were able to get a few formations in that we didn’t stop.”

Stephen Johnson completed 14 of 23 pass attempts for 208 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Wildcats piled up 582 yards of offense, their highest conference output since Nov. 11, 2006, when they had 597 yards in a 38-26 win against Vanderbilt.

“It’s about our preparation,” Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said of his team’s effort. “It’s about the way they go to work each day throughout the week, starting on Mondays. I enjoy coaching these guys and that is why. They take to coaching and they take to criticism and they know we can do so many things better.”

Missouri (2-6, 0-4 Southeastern Conference) has allowed 500 or more yards of offense in four consecutive games, the worst such stretch in school history.

“This is a very elementary statement but we’re not a good football team,” Odom said. “If we work together and continue to follow the plan we have in place, then we will get there, I promise you that.”

Drew Lock was 18 of 31 for 220 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed six times for 34 yards.

Dimetrios Mason caught four passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns for Missouri. The freshman entered the game with 22 catches for 249 yards.

Damarea Crockett was one of eight ball carriers for the Tigers, leading the way with 13 carries 55 yards. Fullback Josh Augusta had the only rushing score, a 1-yard touchdown run set up by a 63-yard punt return by Johnathon Johnson. Johnson also caught two passes for 27 yards and had a 25-yard carry on a reverse.

Kentucky (5-3, 4-2 SEC) dialed up a number of big plays, averaging 7 yards per play to Missouri’s 5.6. The Wildcats converted on all three of their red zone trips and nearly doubled Missouri’s time of possession.

The Tigers managed 18 first downs, but struggled on third down, converting just 4 of 15 attempts. They were also flagged 9 times for 65 yards after surrendering 125 penalty yards last Saturday in a 51-45 loss to Middle Tennessee State.

TAKEAWAY

Kentucky: Snell and Williams are just the second backfield duo in the last decade to record at least 175 yards apiece in an SEC game. Snell had runs of 32, 23 and 19 yards, and Williams had three rushes of 20 yards or more, including a 60-yard touchdown to give Kentucky a 7-0 lead near the end of the first quarter.

Missouri: The Tigers recorded one sack and six tackles for loss, and forced two turnovers, but failed to convert them into points. Missouri took the opening drive of the second half deep into Kentucky territory but was stopped on third down, setting up a 24-yard field goal attempt by Tucker McCann, which he missed wide right.

MASH REPORT

Missouri’s defense was short-handed after losing senior linebacker and leading tackler Michael Scherer for the season with a torn ACL. Scherer was one of several Missouri players injured against Middle Tennessee State, including defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. and cornerback John Gibson. Beckner is out for the season with a torn ACL, and Gibson, who injured his left knee, did not play Saturday.

“We will piece it together,” Odom said. “Everybody in the country is banged up, and that’s just college football. We will be all right.”

UP NEXT

Kentucky: The Wildcats will host Georgia next Saturday. The Bulldogs beat Kentucky 27-3 last season in Athens.

Missouri: The Tigers visit South Carolina next Saturday. Missouri defeated the Gamecocks 24-10 on Oct. 3, 2015 at Faurot Field, its most recent SEC win.

Kansas State holds off Iowa State for 31-26 win in Ames

riggertKansasStateAMES, Iowa (AP) — Kansas State quarterback Jesse Ertz celebrated his return to Iowa with one of the most complete games of his young career.

Ertz rushed for a career-high 106 yards on just nine carries and Kansas State held off host Iowa State 31-26 on Saturday for its third win in four games.

Ertz, a sophomore who broke the Iowa prep record for career touchdowns at tiny Mediapolis High, added 151 yards passing with a TD for the Wildcats (5-3, 3-2 Big 12). They beat the Cyclones (1-7, 0-5) for the ninth year in a row.

“Obviously it had a little more meaning to it. But overall, it’s one game at a time and we’re just trying to put together some wins and some streaks and get some momentum,” Ertz said.

Iowa State pulled to within 17-10 early in the third quarter, but K-State answered with two long scoring drives that put it ahead by 21.

But Kansas State nearly let the Cyclones steal it late — and coach Bill Snyder wasn’t too pleased about it.

Deshaunte Jones had a 5-yard TD catch with 51 seconds left for Iowa State. But the Cyclones failed to execute the ensuing onside kick, touching the ball before it went 10 yards.

Iowa State outscored the Wildcats 16-0 in the fourth.

“I’m not saying it’s so doggone easy. But the only way you can become successful is start, finish and be consistent in between. We’re not doing that,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said.

Alex Barnes, Winston Dimel and Justin Silmon all had short rushing TDs for the Wildcats, who ran for 247 yards.

Backup Jacob Park had 301 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Cyclones. But he missed David Montgomery on a wide-open pass on fourth-and-1 at the K-State 1 with seven minutes left.

“I’m going to take this on me and our staff. There’s some things that happened that we just can’t allow to happen eight to nine weeks into the season,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas State: The Wildcats are now just a win shy of bowl eligibility. With a home date against woeful Kansas looming, that seems imminent. What kind of bowl Kansas State gets invited to remains up in the air, with tough games against Oklahoma State, Baylor and TCU remaining.

Iowa State: The Cyclones had some promising moments on offense in the second half, outgaining K-State 493-398. But Kansas State converted eight of 12 third downs and scored on all five of its trips to the red zone. The Cyclones have let up at least 27 points in all five of their league games.

PIVOTAL MOMENT

Down 17-3, Iowa State opened the second half by recovering an onside kick — and seven plays later Park found Deshaunte Jones for a 24-yard TD pass to make it 17-10. But K-State answered with a 14-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that sucked the life out Jack Trice Stadium.

PARK BLOWS IT

Park got the Cyclones to K-State’s 1-yard line with a chance to pull his team within seven. But the Wildcats stuffed Iowa State on three straight running plays, and Park overthrew Montgomery on a rollout that left both of them yards away from the nearest defender. Park knew the significance of his mistake immediately, falling to his knees with his head in his hands.

THE NUMBERS

Bill Snyder won his 198th game, placing him 25th all-time in career FBS victories. … Iowa State recorded its first safety since 2006 in the fourth quarter. … The Wildcats are 23-4 against Iowa State since 1990. … Iowa State’s Allen Lazard caught eight passes for 134 yards. He has now had at least one reception in 31 straight games, a school record.

UP NEXT

Kansas State hosts Oklahoma State on Nov. 5. The Cowboys toppled previously-unbeaten West Virginia 37-20 on Saturday.

Iowa State has Oklahoma coming in on Thursday. The Cyclones haven’t beaten the Sooners in Ames since 1963.

No. 7 Nebraska loses in OT at No. 11 Wisconsin

riggertNebraskaMADISON, Wis. (AP) — Dare Ogunbowale scored on an 11-yard run in overtime, and No. 11 Wisconsin held on to beat No. 7 Nebraska 23-17 on Saturday night to hand the Cornhuskers their first loss of the season.

The Badgers (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) stopped Nebraska on fourth-and-8 from the 23 after defensive back D’Cota Dixon swatted away a pass to the end zone from Tommy Armstrong Jr. intended for Stanley Morgan Jr.

Dixon’s giddy teammates rushed from the sideline to meet the safety in the end zone to celebrate. Tested Wisconsin picked up its third victory over a Top 10 program.

Nebraska (7-1, 4-1) gained respect after coming back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Drew Brown’s 35-yard field goal with 3:43 left tied it at 17.

Wisconsin had a chance to win it with 1:43 left, but Andrew Endicott’s 45-yard field-goal try went wide left. Endicott also missed the extra point following Ogunbowale’s touchdown.

But a tough-as-nails defense bailed out the Badgers again.

Armstrong finished 12 of 31 for 153 yards. He ran for 39 yards on 13 carries, including a 2-yard score with 13:45 left in the fourth quarter to draw Nebraska within 17-14.

Needing just 11 yards to go over 10,000 in total offense for his career, Armstrong set the mark in the first quarter to become just the 11th player in Big Ten history to reach that milestone.

But he also threw two interceptions in the first half, including one on a pass tipped by lineman Alec James . It set up Endicott’s 44-yard field goal with 6:53 to go in the second quarter for a 10-7 lead that Wisconsin would hold through halftime.

THE TAKEAWAY

Nebraska: The Cornhuskers played well against a top team after being doubted by pundits for a slate of less-than-impressive wins. But that’s probably little consolation to coach Mike Riley’s crew. Regardless, the game will look good on Nebraska’s postseason resume.

Wisconsin: The Badgers shuffled offensive-line combinations again and gave backup quarterback Bart Houston several series, including the game-winning drive in overtime. They had trouble early getting traction in the running game, except for Bradrick Shaw’s 21-yard touchdown run up the middle in the first quarter to give Wisconsin a 7-0 lead. The Cornhuskers fell for a fake jet sweep on that play. Corey Clement had just 15 yards on eight carries in the first half, before finishing with 82 for the night. Wisconsin may want to see what transpires next week by sticking with one combination for a while.

UP NEXT

Nebraska: The trip to Camp Randall Stadium was just a warm-up act for the Cornhuskers, who travel to the Horseshoe to face No. 6 Ohio State next week.

Wisconsin: Visits Northwestern next week. The Badgers in recent years have had trouble at Ryan Field.

Kansas gets drilled by No. 16 Oklahoma 56-3

riggertKUNORMAN, Okla. — Baker Mayfield passed for 236 yards and four touchdowns and No. 16 Oklahoma overcame a sluggish start to rout Kansas 56-3 on Saturday night, moving into sole possession of first place in the Big 12.

Receiver Dede Westbrook extended his hot streak for the Sooners, scoring on a 71-yard punt return and a 41-yard catch as Oklahoma won its 13th straight Big 12 game.

Losses by West Virginia and Baylor earlier Saturday put Oklahoma (6-2, 5-0) into the lead in the conference. Oklahoma is 5-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2004 and for the fourth time ever. On all three previous occasions, Oklahoma went 8-0 in league play, winning titles in 2000 and 2004.

Perhaps more important for Oklahoma was that its beleaguered defense, which allowed 854 yards a week earlier in a 66-59 win over Texas Tech, limited Kansas (1-7, 0-5) to 170 yards, the fewest by an opponent this season. Jordan Evans’ 33-yard third-quarter interception return for a touchdown meant the Sooners’ defense outscored Kansas.

Kansas has lost 17 straight Big 12 games and 39 straight road games overall.

Mayfield, who threw a school-record seven touchdown passes against Texas Tech, threw three in the second quarter against the Jayhawks — the 41-yarder to Westbrook, a 15-yarder to Mark Andrews and a 9-yarders to Dimitri Flowers, the latter with 20 seconds left before halftime to put Oklahoma up 28-3. Mayfield finished 16-of-24 passing.

Mayfield’s 15 touchdown passes in the Sooners’ last three games is a program record.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas: The Jayhawks will win another Big 12 game and win on the road again someday, but that W probably won’t come against the likes of Oklahoma or West Virginia, Kansas’ next opponent. But a home game against Iowa State looms on Nov. 12. Maybe that first streak ends then?

Oklahoma: The Sooners said after starting the season 1-2, with losses to Houston and Ohio State, that they still had the Big 12 title as motivation. Now Oklahoma is atop the league, but the Sooners must finish the season with the gauntlet of Baylor, West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

No. 10 West Virginia’s loss at Oklahoma State and No. 13 Boise State’s loss at Wyoming should open up at least two spots for Oklahoma to move up in the Top 25 .

UP NEXT

Kansas: The Jayhawks will travel next Saturday to face an angry West Virginia team coming off its first loss of the season.

Oklahoma: It will be a short week for the Sooners, who will visit Iowa State on Thursday.
