KU’s Ellis named finalist for Senior CLASS Award

riggertKUOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas forward Perry Ellis has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2015-16 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate basketball, the award announced Thursday.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as NCAA Division I seniors and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of finalists follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 men’s candidates announced in January. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through March 21. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipients will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Men’s Final Four®.

Historically, Kansas’ Wayne Simien won the Senior CLASS Award in 2005. The award also recognizes five-member first and second teams. In 2002-03, Kansas’ Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich were first-team honorees. In 2011, Jayhawk Tyrel Reed was a first-team selection.

Ellis is a sport management major and business minor who will graduate from Kansas in May 2016. The 2014-15 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year started his college career with Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors in 2013. Ellis has graced the Athletic Director’s and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll seven times and has continued his academic success by being named as an Academic All-Big 12 selection in both his sophomore and junior seasons (note: the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Team has yet to be announced). The 2015 All-America Honorable Mention honoree’s work in the classroom is no surprise as he was valedictorian at Wichita Heights High School where he carried a 4.0 grade point average.

The 2015 Danny Manning “Mr. Jayhawk” Award recipient and All-Big 12 First Team performer exudes all the qualities and characteristics expected of leader. Ellis was selected as an Honorary Hero by the Real Men Real Heroes Organization for his extraordinary contributions to the community. He has spent countless hours visiting local schools and youth centers, such as the Boys and Girls Club, to mentor and offer encouragement to young kids. He spends time volunteering at the Wichita Children’s Home, where both of his parents work. A previous NABC Good Works Team nominee, Ellis also devotes one-on-one time with Special Olympics basketball player Tony Parker and is a regular visitor of cancer patients at Via Christi Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Additionally, Ellis contributes to the community as a member of the Kansas men’s basketball team. Each year the Jayhawks host the Wilt Chamberlain Special Olympics Clinic during the heart of conference play. The team also gives approximately 450 women a taste of being a Jayhawk at the annual “Ladies Night Out” event in Allen Fieldhouse, an occasion that creates awareness for breast cancer and benefits Jayhawks for a Cure, the Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH) and the KU Cancer Center. Every year, the KU team participates in a holiday shopping trip to Walmart in order to provide items from a wish list for area families through the Salvation Army. Finally, Ellis and his teammates sign more than 1,500 basketballs annually with proceeds going to local charities.

Ellis will go down as one of the most decorated players in Kansas men’s basketball history. He is only the eighth player in KU lore to rank in the top 15 in both the career scoring and rebounding joining the likes of Manning, Lovellete, LaFrentz, Collison, Robisch, Randall and Simien.

This season Ellis is one of only two players in the Big 12 to rank in the top seven in both scoring and rebounding. In November, he earned all-tournament honors in leading Kansas to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational title. He is on numerous national awards top lists including the Naismith Trophy Midseason 30, the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 and the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year top 10.

One of five finalists for the 2015 Karl Malone Power Forward Award, Ellis was an All-Big 12 First Team honoree as a junior and third-team all-league selection as a sophomore. A four-time Big 12 Player of the Week honoree, in Nov. 2014, Ellis was named the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week after being named the Orlando Classic Most Valuable Player. Additionally, Ellis was a 2015 NABC Division I All-District 8 First Team selection and a Lute Olson All-America Team honoree his junior year.

In the summer of 2015 Ellis started all eight games for team USA at the 2015 World University Games in winning the gold medal. Following the competition he was named to the World University Games second team.

As a freshman Ellis was named to the 2013 Big 12 All-Tournament Team in leading Kansas to the tourney title. As a sophomore in 2013-14, he was named to the all-tournament team at the Battle 4 Atlantis in addition to later being named All-Big 12 Third Team.

KSU women blow 14-point halftime lead, lose at No. 8 Texas

riggertKansasStateAUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Brady Sanders scored 12 points and No. 8 Texas overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat Kansas State 58-51 on Wednesday night.

Sanders made two free throws and a putback on consecutive possessions to give Texas a 47-43 lead with four minutes remaining. Kansas State never caught up.

Ariel Atkins and Imani Boyette scored 10 apiece for Texas (23-2, 12-2 Big 12).

Breanna Lewis led Kansas State (16-9, 6-8) with 20 points. Megan Deines added 10.

Kansas State led 27-18 at halftime, limiting Texas to its lowest point production in a half this season. The Longhorns scored 20 during the first half at Iowa State on Feb. 6, but they produced 45 in the second half and won 65-49.

Texas had twice as many turnovers — 12 — as baskets in the first half against Kansas State.

Boyette, Empress Davenport and Celina Rodrigo, all experienced seniors, committed three turnovers each in the half.

Lewis scored 18 in the half, converting 8 of 11 shots.

Kansas State stretched the lead to 14 early in the third quarter with a 3-point basket by Kindred Wesemann. Then Texas started its comeback, finishing the period with a 21-7 push to tie the game. Atkins scored eight points for Texas during that run.

TIP-INS

Kansas State: Guard Kindred Wesemann scored only six points for Kansas State, seven fewer than her average. She missed 10 of 12 shots.

Texas: Senior center Imani Boyette blocked just one shot — she averages 3.4 — but that was good enough for her to take over sixth place among active players in the NCAA career rankings. . Texas has 12 Big 12 victories for first time since 2004-05. . The Longhorns have won five of their last six games against Kansas State.

RECOGNIZING A MILESTONE

This season Texas became the fifth women’s basketball program to reach 1,000 victories. To recognize that achievement the Longhorns are honoring the three predecessors to current coach Karen Aston, at separate games: Rod Page, Hall of Famer Jody Conradt and Gail Goestenkors. First up, on Wednesday, was Goestenkors, who resigned in 2012 after five seasons and 102 victories. Goestenkors, who led Duke to four NCAA Final Four appearances before coaching at Texas, has worked as an assistant coach in the WNBA after leaving Texas and is now an analyst with the SEC Network. She has not ruled out returning to college. “Right now I have no plans,” Goestenkors said. “I see life as an adventure. I’m open to whatever might come my way.”

Kansas women stay winless in Big 12 with loss at home to TCU

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – TCU took advantage of Kansas’ second-half offensive struggles to run away with a 70-44 victory on Wednesday night inside Allen Fieldhouse.

A 15 percent shooting performance in the third quarter and a scoreless streak that spanned over 10 minutes of game time allowed TCU to extend its lead from six points to 19 by the end of the period. The Horned Frogs (14-11, 6-8 Big 12) shot 46.3 percent from the field on the night, and never looked back after the third-quarter breakout.

Freshman guard Aisia Robertson led the Jayhawks (5-20, 0-14 Big 12) in scoring for the first time this season, finishing the night with a career-high 11 points. The San Francisco, California native filled her stat line with two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Junior forward Caelynn Manning-Allen pulled down seven boards for the eighth time this season, and posted six points and one block. For the second-straight game, Kansas recorded double digit assists and steals.

TCU saw double-figure scoring performances from three different Horned Frogs. Sophomore guard AJ Alix led all scorers after netting 15 points. Alix shot 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Senior guard Zahna Medley connected on 6-of-12 attempts for 13 points and dished out three assists, while senior forward Veja Hamilton sank all four of her free throw attempts on the way to a 12-point game.

After the two teams traded baskets to start the game, a steal and fast-break layup from Kopatich gave Kansas an early 8-4 lead. TCU pulled in front for the first time after a steal by Alix led to a three-pointer at the other end at just under the two-minute mark of the opening quarter. The Horned Frogs held the lead for the remainder of the period, capped off by a buzzer-beating triple to push the advantage to 18-14.

A steal by Robertson led to another run-out basket for Kansas’ first points of the second quarter at the 6:21 mark. The cold start, caused by 0-of-3 shooting and four turnovers, allowed the visitors to build an eight-point lead.

The margin hovered around eight points for much of the quarter, until stretching to double digits for the first time on a three-point play from Hamilton with 2:12 left in the half. A TCU layup with 30 seconds would be the final bucket of the second quarter, giving the Horned Frogs the 35-23 lead at the break.

After missing the mark on all six three-point attempts in the first half, it took the Jayhawks just 19 seconds to hit a triple in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, another long-range basket, this time from sophomore guard Lauren Aldridge, cut the deficit to six points. The Horned Frogs responded with a 13-0 run, shutting Kansas down for the final seven minutes and 55 seconds of the third quarter. The Jayhawks shot 0-of-16 during the stretch to find themselves trailing 50-31 heading into the final quarter of play.

TCU connected on first four shot attempts of the fourth quarter, while Kansas continued to struggle to find the bottom of the bet. Freshman guard Kylee Kopatich knocked down a free throw at the 7:22 mark to end the scoring drought, and drained a jumper 41 seconds later, concluding the 11-minute stretch without a field goal.

The Jayhawks closed the game out strong, scoring the final eight points and holding TCU scoreless over the last three minutes of play, but the turnaround came too late. At the final buzzer, TCU emerged with the win, 70-44.
