Amanda Magee named Benedictine women’s lacrosse coach

BCATCHISON, Kan. – Benedictine College Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer has announced the hiring of Amanda Magee to lead the newly-formed Women’s Lacrosse program.
“We are excited to have Amanda join the Raven Athletics family,” Gartenmayer said. “We look forward to what she will add to the Benedictine community and the leadership she will bring to our Women’s Lacrosse program in the future.”

Magee was an All-Region selection at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., in 2010. She was named to the All Commonwealth Coast Conference first team in 2009 and 2010 and also led NCAA Div. III in saves percentage in 2009 and 2010.

“When I saw the job posting, I was really excited about the chance to move to a part of the country where lacrosse is really starting to become more popular,” Magee said. “Then the opportunity to build my own program was also very exciting to me.”

Magee comes to Benedictine from NCAA Div. III Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I., where she served as an assistant coach from September of 2011 through May of 2014.

As a former NCAA Div. III player and assistant coach, Magee believes the athletes that she’ll be recruiting to Benedictine will be very similar to those she played with and coached at the Div. III level.

“The NAIA and Div. III student-athlete is very similar,” Magee said. “They understand what it takes be be a success both on an off the field and have a broad understanding of what it means to be a student-athlete.”

In addition to serving as an assistant coach at Salve Regina, Magee also spent a year coaching high school girls lacrosse in Columbus, New Jersey.

Magee will arrive on campus in March and will begin to build the women’s program, which will begin play as a varsity sport in the Spring of 2016.

“We are excited to be able to add men’s and women’s lacrosse to our varsity lineup,” said Benedictine College President Stephen D. Minnis. “I think our students have enjoyed the sport at the club level and the growth of lacrosse in our region makes it a natural addition to the varsity offerings as we continue to add academic programs and grow as a well-rounded institution.”

Griffons lose heart breaker at home to Northwest Missouri State 59-58

MWSUA chance for a rivalry sweep on Wednesday for the Griffons came up seconds short as the Missouri Western men basketball team dropped a heart breaker in the MWSU Fieldhouse, 59-58, to Northwest Missouri State.

Trailing by one with seven seconds remaining, Cortrez Colbert’s attempt to drive was stopped short when Matt Wallace stripped the ball from Colbert, ending the game. Northwest had a chance to go up by three on the prior possession but Connor Crooker’s layup came up short. Colbert pulled down the rebound before Brett Weiberg called a timeout to draw up the Griffons final play.

The Griffons had their chances leading up to the turnover. Aaron Emmanuel missed a free throw with the Griffons trailing by one and 53 seconds left on the clock. The ball stayed with Missouri Western but Hans Thun would miss a three-point attempt with 50 seconds left.

Northwest outscored Missouri Western by five in the second half after a red hot first frame for MWSU. The Griffons went to halftime with a 32-28 lead on 68 percent shooting from the field, a perfect 100 percent from three and 75 percent from the free throw line. Missouri Western shot 52 percent in the second half but missed all three of their three-point attempts, while Northwest used the three to climb back into the game. The Bearcats went 5-6 from three in the second half.

Cortrez Colbert led all scorers with 20 points. Colbert game MWSU a chance in the second half, making two straight buckets to erase a four-point Northwest lead with 7:35 to go. Another layup from Colbert gave the Griffons a 52-50 lead, then Colbert stretched the MWSU lead to four with his fourth-straight basket, scoring eight straight for the Griffons. Hans Thun scored 10 and Kevin Thomas had eight points and 10 rebounds before fouling out. Emmanuel scored eight points and Dareon Jones finished with seven points and five rebounds that included two free throws with less than two minutes left that pulled the Griffons within one.

With the loss, Missouri Western falls to 9-11 overall and 5-8 in MIAA play. The face Lindenwood for the second time in seven days, hosting the Lions on Feb. 7. Saturday night’s game is also Military Appreciation along with Youth Basketball Night and Boy Scout Night.

Mizzou’s losing streak reaches eight as they fall at Alabama

riggertMizzouTUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Retin Obasohan grabbed a rebound to start a fast break, then delivered a behind-the-back pass to Levi Randolph for a dunk with eight minutes left.

The Crimson Tide didn’t score another field goal, or need one. Randolph scored 20 points and Obasohan did a little bit of everything in Alabama’s 62-49 victory over Missouri on Wednesday night, including setting up that emphatic final basket.

“I saw Levi trailing the whole time and I knew he was going to be open,” Obasohan said.

The Tide (14-8, 4-5 Southeastern Conference) bounced back from two straight losses to hand the Tigers (7-15, 1-8) their eighth consecutive defeat.

Obasohan scored 12 points and Shannon Hale had 10 for Alabama. Randolph, whose career high of 33 points came in the last meeting with Missouri, made 3 of 6 3-pointers and 5 of 6 free throws.

Keanau Post was the Tigers’ only double-digit scorer, finishing with 11 points. Leading scorer Johnathan Williams III had only one of his seven points in the second half.

Keith Shamburger had assists on 11 of Missouri’s 18 baskets.

“It was a close game until the last three or four or five minutes,” Missouri coach Kim Anderson said. “We just haven’t been able to hit the big shot.

“We had two airballs and missed a wide-open layup. When you’re a young team that’s struggling those things tend to pile up on you, and that’s what happened tonight.”

Obasohan, making just his third start of the season in relief of No. 2 scorer Ricky Tarrant, also had eight rebounds and four steals for the Tide.

“Defensively he made some unbelievable hustle plays to ignite our team,” Alabama coach Anthony Grant said.

Tarrant missed his second straight game with a lower right leg injury.

Missouri took the lead briefly on Namon Wright’s 3-pointer to open the second half but shortly after that Alabama scored six straight points to take control back. The Tigers couldn’t put together any kind of run after that, failing to reach 50 points for just the second time this season.

“I thought we missed some good shots,” Anderson said. “That’s something that’s bugged us, especially lately, especially depending too much on 3-point shots and not getting to the free-throw line.”

Alabama built a 39-30 on Randolph’s 3-pointer with 13:25 left. Wes Clark responded with a 3 for the Tigers and Post added a basket and foul shot.

Randolph pushed the lead to double digits on a 3-pointer and the final dunk with 8:00 left. The Tide did the rest of its scoring from the free throw line but the final margin was still the biggest.

SOLID SUB

Retin Obasohan also had 11 points against No. 1 Kentucky after being held scoreless and playing a total of 12 minutes in the previous three games.

POOR SHOOTING

Missouri starters Wes Clark (2 of 13) and Namon Wright (2 of 10) both struggled from the floor. Each scored six points.

TIP-INS

Missouri: Made 18 of 56 shots (32.1 percent) and 4 of 23 3-pointers (17.4 percent). The Tigers committed just 10 turnovers.

Alabama: Has won all three meetings with Missouri at Coleman Coliseum. The Tide made 24 of 34 free throws.

Missouri Western women use big first half to rout Bearcats

MWSUThe Missouri Western women’s basketball team won its third straight home game and second straight overall in impressive fashion, defeating Northwest Missouri State 58-37 Wednesday night in the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Northwest Missouri State failed to match the Griffon first half point total for the entire game. MWSU took a 42-14 lead to halftime on 39 percent shooting from the field, including a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line. Sarafina Handy had 19 of her career-high 22 points in the first half as the Griffons jumped on the Bearcats early and didn’t let up.

A lower scoring second half saw the Griffons outscored by seven but it still wasn’t enough to close the gap created in the first half. MWSU finished shooting 33 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 70 percent from the free throw line. They forced 19 Northwest turnovers which were converted into 29 of Missouri Western’s points.

Handy led all scorers with 22 and added five steals and five rebounds. Tiara Hall had nine with eight rebounds and Ariana Novak finished with seven points and six boards. With the win, Missouri Western moved to 10-9 on the year and 5-8 in MIAA play.

Missouri Western will look for their fourth straight home win and third overall when Lindenwood comes to the fieldhouse on Feb. 7. The Griffons downed Lindenwood, 87-59 on Jan. 31 in St. Charles. Saturday night’s game is also Military Appreciation along with Youth Basketball Night and Boy Scout Night.

K-State’s struggles continue with loss at Texas Tech

riggertKStateLUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — The duo of Toddrick Gotcher and Devaugntah Williams is key for Texas Tech’s offense.

“They’re both wing players,” Red Raiders coach Tubby Smith said. “They’re both shooting guards. That’s their job: to knock down open shots.”

Williams and Gotcher — who combined for 25 of Texas Tech’s 30 second-half points — scored 22 and 15 points, respectively, to lead the Red Raiders to a 64-47 win against Kansas State on Wednesday night.

Both offenses struggled to open the second half, which the Red Raiders (12-11, 2-8 Big 12) entered leading 34-26. The Wildcats (12-11, 5-5 Big 12) scored just two points over the first 5-plus minutes of the second half, and the Red Raiders needed 3:50 to make their first field goal of the half.

But then the Wildcats heated up, trimming the deficit to one point, 45-44, with 7:50 remaining.

The Red Raiders responded with a 14-0 run over 2:46 to build a 59-44 lead with 2:28 left to ice the game. The Wildcats shot 0 of 5 as part of a 5:06 scoring drought that covered part of that period.

“You have one chance to win the game when you come back like that,” Wildcats coach Bruce Weber said. “I thought they were getting a little tentative, a little stagnant, but we couldn’t get over the hump. It’s disappointing. We just got to go back and keep battling.”

The Red Raiders closed the game on a 19-3 run over the final 5:11 and made 6 of their final 7 field goals. The Wildcats struggled to finish the game, hitting just one of their last nine shots.

Kansas State struggled without sophomore Marcus Foster, the team’s leading scorer (14 points per game) who was suspended for the game due to a violation of team rules. Weber said Foster’s suspension could continue beyond Wednesday.

“Our whole team, we’ve been plagued from the start of the season by immaturity, by lack of discipline and by lack of consistency, on and off the court the whole year,” Weber said. “I feared because we had so many young guys that we wouldn’t have much maturity as a team. Plus, they had too much hype.”

Thomas Gipson scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats in Foster’s absence. Just three other Wildcats scored more than seven points and five players didn’t score.

The Red Raiders improved to 10-0 this season when leading at halftime.

—

TIP-INS

Kansas State: In addition to Foster’s suspension, the Wildcats also suspended freshman Malek Harris for Wednesday’s game against Texas Tech due to a violation of team rules. He entered with an average of 2.2 points and 13.6 minutes per game. As with Foster, Weber isn’t certain when Harris will return.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders dismissed junior forward Justin Jamison from the team Wednesday due to a violation of team rules. In his first season with the team, the junior college transfer appeared in nine games and averaged 2.7 points and 2 rebounds. He was suspended for Texas Tech’s first two games this season. Sophomore Stan Mays also served the second game of an indefinite suspension Wednesday.

STAR POWER

Kansas State’s Nino Williams continued to struggle with a left knee injury that left him, according to Weber, at “60, 65 percent.” Williams shot 2 of 8 and scored four points in 24 minutes before fouling out.
