14 Griffons earn All-MIAA football honors

riggertMissouriWesternFourteen Missouri Western football players have been named to the 2014 All-MIAA team.

Earning first team distinction for Missouri Western were running back Raphael Spencer, offensive lineman Travis Anderson, defensive back Michael Jordan and punter Scott Groner. Both Jordan and Groner repeat as first team selections. Spencer made the second team last year and it’s the first All-MIAA selection for Anderson.

Kicker John Schmiemeier, defensive lineman Arbanas Elliot and linebacker Stephen Juergens were named to the second team. It’s the first All-MIAA selection for Schmiemeier. Juergens was an honorable mention pick a season ago with Elliot being named to the third team last season.

Defensive back Meshack Kennedy was named to the third team. It was his first All-MIAA honor. Tight end Alek Ferbet, offensive linemen Leonard Wester and Christian Orduno, linebackers Yomi Alli and Cody Lindsay along with defensive back Marc Harrison were all named honorable mention.

Raphael Spencer: Spencer received first team honors after rushing for 1,126 yards on 243 carries. The junior was second in the MIAA in rushing. He also moved into third on the all-time rushing list at MWSU after his 145-yard rushing performance at Missouri Southern. The junior rushed for seven touchdowns and averaged 4.6 yards per carry and just over 102 yards per game.

Travis Anderson: The redshirt sophomore started all 11 games for the Griffons at left guard. He helped Spencer to another 1,000-yard season and also was a key part of an offensive line that allowed just 1.6 sacks per contest.

Michael Jordan: The junior’s 16 passes defended were tops in the MIAA. He also tied for the MIAA lead with four interceptions this season. He took one of those interceptions back 39 yards for a touchdown at Washburn. It’s the second straight first team nod for Jordan. He was the MIAA Freshman of the year and an honorable mention pick in 2011.

Scott Groner: The Australian native joins Jordan on the first team for the second year in a row. Groner led the MIAA with a 42.2 yard per punt average. He boomed 15 kicks over 50 yards, including a long of 70 yards in the season opener against Central Missouri. The senior also forced 15 fair catches and induced just four touchbacks on 60 punts.

John Schmiemeier: The senior was named second team despite leading the MIAA in field goal percentage (72%) and tying for the league lead in made field goals (18). Schmiemeier was also perfect on point after attempts and was named MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week twice.

Arbanas Elliot: The junior started all 11 games on the defensive line, playing primarily at the nose guard position. He racked up 28 total tackles including three for loss and 2.5 sacks. Elliot also recorded one interception that set up the Griffons winning touchdown against Central Missouri.

Stephen Juergens: After leading the Griffons in tackles for the third straight year and earning MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week once, Juergens landed a second team nod. The senior tallied 108 total tackles, including 59 solo stops. He also led the team with 12 tackles for loss and added 3.5 sacks and an interception.  Juergens was also a key part of a Griffon defense that finished third in the MIAA in total defense and allowed the second fewest points in school history (179).

Meshack Kennedy: In his first year as a full-time starter, the senior finished second on the team with 81 total tackles. Kennedy also had 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.

Alek Ferbet: The junior tight end had big shoes to fill, replacing the NFL-bound Reggie Jordan. Ferbet didn’t disappoint, hauling in 15 catches for 196 yards, including a long reception of 63 yards against Nebraska-Kearney.

Leonard Wester: The junior started all 11 games for the Griffons at left tackle and helped pave the way for Spencer’s All-MIAA campaign. Wester and the rest of the offensive line also allowed the fifth fewest sacks in the MIAA.

Christian Orduno: The senior started all 22 games he played in at right tackle for the Griffons. He was part of a unit that has helped Raphael Spencer post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and move into third on the all-time rushing list at MWSU. Orduno and the rest of the offensive line also allowed the fifth fewest sacks in the MIAA.

Yomi Alli: A key part of a promising junior class, Alli finished third on the team in tackles with 71 total. His 11.5 tackles for loss were second most on the team and he added two sacks and four quarterback hurries. Last year, Alli was a second team selection.

Cody Lindsay: A stellar freshman campaign from Cody Lindsay saw the Ozark, Missouri native finish second in the MIAA with seven sacks. He appeared in all 11 games with five starts on a defense that came just shy of setting new program marks for fewest points allowed. Lindsay finished with 37 total tackles, 10 for loss.

Marc Harrison: The senior finished his final season with the Griffons tied for the MIAA lead with four interceptions. His 100-yard interception return for a touchdown against Northeastern State tied a school record and earned him MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week honors. Harrison had 53 total tackles, broke up one pass and defended five more. He also forced two fumbles and recovered another.

No. 5 Kansas gets crushed by top-ranked Kentucky 72-40

riggertKUINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Dakari Johnson scored 11 points, Andrew Harrison had 10 and No. 1 Kentucky used a dominant defense to blow out No. 4 Kansas 72-40 in Tuesday night’s Champions Classic.

The Wildcats (3-0) shot just 43.1 percent from the field, but they were so good on defense that it didn’t matter. Kansas (1-1) shot just 19.6 percent from the field and was 15 for 27 at the line in the storied program’s worst offensive performance since a 61-45 loss to Kentucky on Dec. 1, 1998.

Wayne Selden Jr. had nine points for the Jayhawks, and Cliff Alexander finished with eight.

The Wildcats led by as much as 35-17 in the first half. After Kansas closed to 38-28 at the half, Kentucky opened the second half with six straight points and continued extending the lead throughout the second half.

Kentucky has now won its first three games by 40, 19 and 32 points. But Tuesday’s victory was easily the most impressive of the three and helped reinforce the image that last season’s national championship runner-ups could be good enough to go undefeated this season. The last men’s team with a perfect season was Indiana in 1975-76.

The Jayhawks shot just 24.2 percent in the first half. They were nearly twice as bad in the second half, when they made only 3 of 23 shots — 13.0 percent.

And the Wildcats never let up. After extending the lead to 55-36 with 10:28 to go, Kentucky went on a 9-0 run to make it 64-36. Kansas didn’t even crack the 40-point mark until the final minutes.

Kansas had only been held to fewer than 50 points one other time during coach Bill Self’s tenure — a 61-49 loss to Arizona on Nov. 21, 2005.

TIP-INS

Kentucky: The Wildcats now have a 16-game lead over second-place Kansas for the most wins in college basketball. Kentucky has 2,143 all-time wins and has won in three different buildings in downtown Indianapolis — the RCA Dome, Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Kansas: The Jayhawks may argue for a different draw in next year’s classic draw. They lost to Kentucky in this event in 2011 and to the Wildcats in the 2012 national championship game.

No. 21 Nebraska overcomes slow start to rout Central Arkansas

NebraskariggertLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s slog through the first half against Central Arkansas might have had the fans more worried than coach Tim Miles.

The 21st-ranked Cornhuskers won 82-56 on Tuesday night in a game that turned into a rout the last 10 minutes.

“We weren’t all locked in at the same time,” Miles said. “We had some real bonehead, just numbskull plays. We dribbled off our foot twice in transition, threw it to them a couple times early. But we locked in and I thought had a great second half defensively.”

Terran Petteway scored 23 points for the Huskers (2-0), and Shavon Shields added 16 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Tai Webster had 11 of his 13 points in the second half.

Miles experimented with different combinations throughout the game, which might have led to some of the choppy play.

“We have to figure out this guy or this guy,” Miles said. “We’re only a spot or two from being where we need to be.”

The Huskers shot 42.3 percent with nine turnovers and only three assists in the first half. After halftime, they shot 64 percent with six turnovers and nine assists.

The Bears (0-3) shot 29.6 percent after halftime and 32.8 percent for the game.

Jake Zuilhof led Central Arkansas with 12 points. Albert Christensson had 11 points, and Jordan Howard scored 10.

“I thought we played awfully hard,” Bears coach Russ Pennell said. “We were playing against an outstanding basketball team, No. 21 in the country, in the Big Ten. We did have a good first half. Overall, I thought the guys gave good effort. This one feels different because of the effort and the energy we put forth.”

The Bears stayed close early on, slowing the pace with fouls aplenty and benefiting from Nebraska’s sloppy play on both ends. Nebraska led just 32-30 at the under-4 minute timeout.

Central Arkansas closed to five points early in the second half before Nebraska scored 14 straight points to lead 61-42. The Bears missed eight straight shots and committed a couple turnovers as the Huskers pulled away.

Webster’s 3-pointer from the corner closed a 21-4 spurt that gave Nebraska a 68-46 lead with under eight minutes to play.

“I thought they upped the intensity and pushed out a little better,” Pennell said. “And, honestly, I thought we got tired.”

TIP-INS

Nebraska: The Huskers had a 40-35 advantage on the boards after getting outrebounded 36-33 by Northern Kentucky in their opener. … Webster matched his career high with four steals.

Missouri’s Hansbrough earns weekly SEC honor

riggertMizzouUniversity of Missouri junior running back Russell Hansbrough (Arlington, Texas) has been named the Southeastern Conference’s football Offensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday at Texas A&M, as announced tonight by the league office.

Hansbrough, playing in his home state of Texas, led Mizzou to a huge 34-27 road win at #24 Texas A&M Saturday evening, thanks to his career-high 199 rushing yards.  He averaged 9.9 yards per carry (20 attempts), which included touchdown runs of 49 and 45 yards on consecutive 3rd-quarter possessions as the Tigers rallied from a 13-6 halftime deficit.

Four Jayhawks named to Wooden Award Preseason Top 50

riggertKUFour Kansas men’s basketball players were named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Monday. Junior forward Perry Ellis, sophomore guard Wayne Selden, Jr., and freshmen Cliff Alexander and Kelly Oubre, Jr., were named to the preseason squad. Selden was also named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 last year.

Kansas and Kentucky were the only two schools with four individuals named to the 2014 50-man list. Alexander and Oubre were two of seven freshmen on the list and the Big 12 Conference led the way with 10 picks.

KU’s Mundine named one of eight semifinalists for Mackey Award

riggertKUKansas senior Jimmay Mundine was named one of eight semi-finalists for the John Mackey Award Monday morning, it was announced by The John Mackey Award. Mundine is the first Kansas player to be named a semi-finalist for the award, which has been in existence since 2000.

A native of Denison, Texas, Mundine recorded a career-best tying seven receptions for a career-high 137 yards and a touchdown, leading the Jayhawks in receptions and receiving yards in their near-upset of fifth-ranked TCU in their last outing. Mundine is having a strong senior campaign as he leads all Big 12 Conference tight ends and ranks fourth nationally among the position group with his 537 receiving yards on 40 catches. He is averaging 13.4 yards per catch in 2014 and has scored three touchdowns. His 537 receiving yards are the most by a tight end from a ‘Power 5’ conference and his 40 receptions ranks second among tight ends from a ‘Power 5′ conference. Mundine has been critical to Kansas’ offensive improvement as 30 of his 40 receptions have resulted in first downs or touchdowns.

Mundine was named the John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week following his performance against Central Michigan. He has picked up honorable mention John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week honors twice this season, following games at Texas Tech and against Iowa State.

Joining Mundine as a semi-finalist for the John Mackey Award are E.J. Bibbs (SR, Iowa State), Evan Engram (SO, Ole Miss), Ben Koyack (SR, Notre Dame), Nick O’Leary (SR, Florida State), Jean Sifrin (JR, Massachusetts), Clive Walford (SR, Miami) and Maxx Williams (SO, Minnesota).

Tigers defeat Valpo as Anderson gets first win at Missouri

riggertMizzouCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kim Anderson says his team is a work in progress. But after a disappointing season opener, he can now rest a little easier after a 56-41 win against Valparaiso on Sunday.

“Friday night was an embarrassment, not to take anything away from” Missouri-Kansas City, the first-year Missouri coach said about his team’s 69-61 loss. “To lose at home in your first game, I think our guys were somewhat tentative.”

That tentativeness showed up again in the team’s first half against Valparaiso, as the Tigers led 24-23 at the break despite no player converting more than one field goal. The team finally gained some separation with a 14-2 run to take a 41-29 lead with 9:47 remaining.

Valparaiso never could get closer than seven the rest of the way.

Wes Clark scored 16 points to lead Missouri (1-1) while Johnathan Williams III added 10.

Anderson thought his team started to play more aggressively in the second half by attacking the middle of the court, rather than simply passing around the perimeter. The Tigers made 10 of their first 18 shots after the break and finished 20 of 50 for the game.

“I think we’re coming together more as a team,” Williams said. “Just trying to learn about each other more and bond together as a team.”

E. Victor Nickerson led Valparaiso (1-1) with 12 points while Alec Peters added seven. Peters earned All-Freshman honors in the Horizon League last year with 12.7 points per game, but only played 27 minutes against Missouri because of foul trouble.

Peters collected two fouls in the first 2:55 and then another with 6:06 left in the opening half. He added a fourth 4 1/2 minutes after the break.

“There’s no question it took us out of what we wanted,” Drew said.

Both teams started 3 of 13 from the field, preventing either from leading by more than five in the first half. But the Crusaders couldn’t keep up in the closing half, as coach Bryce Drew said his team was “worn down” by Missouri’s size.

“When you get tired, I think a lot of our shots became short at the end just from fatigue,” he said. “I thought that definitely played a role in those last 10 minutes of the game.”

TIP-INS

Valparaiso: The Crusaders haven’t defeated a major-conference team since Washington in 2008 and won’t face another this regular season. They were picked to finish fourth in the Horizon League after finishing in the same position last year.

Missouri: Attendance was announced at 5,369, slightly more than a third of Mizzou Arena’s capacity, after about a half-inch of snow fell earlier in the day. . Freshman Jakeenan Gant missed his second consecutive game while the school reviews his eligibility.

FREE THROWS

Although Anderson said his team played more aggressively, the Tigers only shot 14 free throws, two fewer than against UMKC. The team converted 12 of them, though, compared with Valparaiso’s seven-of-12 performance from the charity stripe.

MISSING OFFENSE

Valparaiso won its opener Friday 90-76 against East Tennessee State thanks to 50 percent (26 of 52) shooting, including 10 of 18 from 3-point range. But the offense never could find its rhythm at Missouri without Peters consistently on the floor, finishing 33 percent (15 of 46) from the field.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

“We definitely needed a win,” Clark said. “We didn’t know exactly where we stood before that game on Friday. It just woke us up some, made us a little bit more aware of where we needed to go and how to get there.”
