Kansas rolls to exhibition win against Emporia State

KUThe Kansas defense was relentless in the opening half, allowing just seven Emporia State baskets, yet the Jayhawk offense needed time to catch up. The wait was worth it as KU ignited for 63 points in the final 20 minutes en route to an overwhelming 109-56 exhibition win at Allen Fieldhouse Tuesday night.

Despite a 21-point halftime advantage, Kansas came out of the break ready to change the lackluster offensive tempo. Sophomore guard Frank Mason III pulled the trigger on an alley-oop pass to sophomore guard Wayne Selden, Jr., for a dunk just 13 seconds into the half. Moments later, Selden was in on a trap at half court that forced the Hornets into an over-and-back turnover.

Just like that, the tempo was changed.

Freshman forward Cliff Alexander, who scored just four points in the opening frame, unleashed for three second-half dunks to light up the sold-out building. At halftime, five other Jayhawks had more points than the incoming Naismith High School Player of the Year. By night’s end, however, Alexander was the first Jayhawk to double-figures and finished with 12 points.

He wasn’t alone. Kansas was fair in the first half, scoring 46 points on 50 percent shooting, but went berserk in the next 20 minutes – hitting 66 percent from the floor (23-for-35). KU doubled its first-half scoring total in less than 14 minutes, while eight of its 15 players finished the game in double-figures. What resulted was the Jayhawks’ highest-scoring exhibition effort in 10 years (115-70 vs. Emporia State, 11/7/04).

Like Alexander, junior forward Perry Ellis was also slow to score in the first half, tallying only two points. He let loose for 11 points in 11 minutes in the final frame to tie for the team lead with 13 points. Fellow big man, sophomore Landen Lucas, missed just one from the floor (4-for-5) and once from the free throw line (5-for-6) to tie Ellis with a team-high 13 points.

Selden finished behind them with 12 points, all of which came in the second half. Redshirt junior forward Hunter Mickelson chalked up 11 points before becoming KU’s only foul-out victim and sophomore guard Frank Mason III hung up 11 points, as well. Guards Brannen Greene and Devonte’ Graham sparked an impressive 61 points off the bench with their 10 points apiece. Junior forward Jamari Traylor just missed the 10-point mark as his perfect 4-for-4 shooting left him with nine points.

Freshman guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk made his first start, albeit unofficial, marking the only change in the starting lineup from the Jayhawks’ first exhibition. The other changes, however, were more significant. Most notably, was the Jayhawks’ much improved free-throw accuracy as well as their rebound (45-29) and assist (26-6) margins.

By the end of the first half, the pesky Kansas defense held Emporia State to 7-of-26 shooting in the first half and a lowly 29 percent (15-for-51) for the game. Sophomore guard Jay Temaat actually led the floor with his 16 points, but he was the only Hornet in double-figures.

Three offensive rebounds in their first possession provided multiple opportunities for the Hornets to score the first points the night. ESU sophomore forward Terrence Sardin obliged with a put-back layup, while his team kept the Jayhawks off the board for nearly two-and-a-half minutes. In fact, neither team caught much fire early on. In the first 10 attempts on both sides, ESU made just two buckets, KU only four. The Jayhawks righted the ship, making 12 of their next 22 to finish the half at 50 percent shooting, thanks in large part to the input off the bench.

When Greene and Graham checked in and delivered a quick five-point burst, KU saw its first double-digit lead, but it wasn’t a lasting one until Hunter Mickelson found Kelly Oubre, Jr. sprinting toward the basket. The open look resulted in an easy two points for Oubre and a 20-8 lead midway through the first half. Emporia State would never get within single digits again.

Though Kansas built a lead that remained intact, it was slow to grow as more than two minutes passed with the same 20-8 score on the board. Adding to it, 10 minutes still remained in the first half when Emporia State was whistled for its seventh team foul to drag the opening frame out with bonus free throws. Kansas certainly converted – hitting 13-of-14 from the line – but the excitement was lacking.

Right on cue, Alexander slammed a Mickelson pass through the basket. Oubre swatted a shot into the hands of Graham, who laid it in on the other end and suddenly the Jayhawks broke open the game. Waiting it out, Graham let the final seconds tick away before driving the lane for the last bucket of the half and Kansas took a 46-25 lead to the lockerroom.

Head coach Bill Self and company flipped the switch during the break and came back out aggressive and ready to score. Not three minutes into the second half, Kansas shot out to a 30-point lead. The offense finally in gear, Greene knocked down and three, while Selden found Ellis for another lob-to-dunk pass. Meanwhile the Jayhawks were still money from the free throw line when Ellis connected on two more, putting KU up big, 60-28.

Mykhailiuk shot and missed four threes in the first half. Fittingly, he landed his first one of the night during the Jayhawks’ second-half fireworks show. Although it was the only ‘Svi for Three’ of the night, his trey doubled up the score, 84-42.

It was flat-out fun after that, watching eight different Jayhawks shoot their way to double-digits. All 15 Jayhawks saw time in the landslide, including junior guard Evan Manning who’s three-pointer put the finishing touches on KU’s 109-56 win.

Griffons bounce back and dominate Nebraska-Kearney 55-0

MWSUA week after suffering their worst loss in four years, the Missouri Western football team had its largest margin of victory in over a year with a 55-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney.

It’s the biggest win for Missouri Western since a 60-point victory over Missouri S&T on Sept. 14, 2013 at Spratt Stadium and the Griffon defense’s second shutout of the year.

Western had a season high 550 yards of offense, including 217 on the ground and 333 through the air. The offense showed a new wrinkle, using tight end Daylon Harper as a fullback. The sophomore rushed seven carries for 24 yards and the only two rushing touchdowns of his career.

The win moves MWSU to 6-4 on the season and guarantees a sixth straight winning season and 12th consecutive winning record in the MIAA. Prior to the game, 12 Griffon seniors were honored for their contributions to the program. One of those seniors, linebacker Stephen Juergens, led the team with eight total tackles. The Griffon defense racked up seven sacks, including 2.5 from Cody Lindsay. Missouri Western also forced two Loper fumbles and Marc Harrison picked up his third interception of the year. Nebraska-Kearney was limited to 229 yards of offense and only 92 on the ground, nearly 100 less than their season average coming into the game.

Skyler Windmiller finished 16-23 with 296 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Raphael Spencer rushed 17 times for 72 yards and Dominic Thomas, another Griffon senior, finished with seven carries for 56 yards and a 32-yard TD run. Dee Tolliver had two catches for 133 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Brandynn Clark finished with seven catches for 55 yards.

It’s the sixth straight win for the Griffons over Nebraska-Kearney. The Lopers still lead the all-time series 16-9. Griffon head coach Jerry Partridge is now 6-0 against UNK and Loper head coach Darrell Morris moves to 0-3 against MWSU.

Missouri Western will look to win their seventh game of the season next week when they travel to Missouri Southern for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

Missouri wins final exhibition game against UMSL

MUThe Mizzou men’s basketball team wrapped up exhibition play with a 77-54 victory over UMSL Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena. Freshman Montaque Gill-Caesar paced the Tigers with a game-high 19 points and Jonathan Williams recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

After holding a five-point lead at halftime, Mizzou pulled away down the stretch by attacking down low and getting to the free throw line. The Tigers outscored UMSL 34-8 in the paint for the game and cashed in at the charity stripe, converting 13-of-17 as a team.

On the defensive end, Mizzou posted eight total blocks and prevented the Tritons from getting many second chance opportunities. In the second half, the Tigers limited UMSL to just one offensive rebound and held a 22-10 advantage on the glass.

Mizzou countered a slow start from the field with a 16-3 run midway through the first frame. Following a long three-pointer from sophomore Wes Clark, Gill-Caesar tossed in back-to-back buckets to pull within five, 26-21. The Tigers then turned to Williams III, who earned a trip to the free throw line on three consecutive possessions and made five-of-six. On the final possession of the first half, Williams III stepped outside and knocked down a deep trey to hand Mizzou a 39-34 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Tigers consistently found ways to get to the rim and score easy buckets. Junior forward Ryan Rosburg worked in the paint for a basket twice in the opening minute to set the tone. Two possessions later, Gill-Caesar yanked down an offensive rebound and made a put back layup in traffic and the Tigers never looked back.

At the 10:09 mark, Keith Shamburger dished an extra pass on the perimeter to set up freshman Tramaine Isabell for a corner three. Shamburger then scored on back-to-back possessions with a jumper and trey of his own. The senior put an exclamation point on the Tigers’ big second half with a nifty alley-oop pass to Deuce Bello, who threw down a ferocious dunk. Shamburger finished his all-around performance with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.

With exhibition play in the books, the Kim Anderson head-coaching era will officially begin as Mizzou opens up the regular season next Friday, Nov. 14. The Tigers will take on UMKC at Mizzou Arena. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.

No. 7 K-State gets rolled at No. 6 TCU 41-20

riggertKStateFORT WORTH, Texas — Trevone Boykin did an acrobatic flip on the second of his three touchdown runs and threw for 219 yards and another score for No. 6 TCU in a 41-20 victory over No. 9 Kansas State on Saturday night that had huge Big 12 and playoff implications.

Aaron Green, filling in for the injured B.J. Catalon, ran 18 times for 171 yards for the Horned Frogs (8-1, 5-1) in their first-ever home game matching top-10 teams. Green had a 65-yard TD run in the third quarter.

A week after Boykin apologized in the locker room after a one-point win at West Virginia for what he considered a subpar performance, the dual-threat quarterback set a career high with 123 yards rushing on 17 carries and completed 23 of 34 passes. Boykin had a 2-yard TD run and a 10-yard scoring pass to David Porter in the first quarter that put TCU up 14-0 against coach Gary Patterson’s alma mater.

The end of Kansas State’s five-game winning streak created a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with the Wildcats (7-2, 5-1), TCU and No. 10 Baylor (8-1, 5-1) with three games left in the regular season.

In the College Football Playoff rankings, TCU is sixth, a spot ahead of Kansas State with Baylor 12th. The new rankings come out Tuesday, and the final poll in four weeks will take into account conference championships.

Boykin and Green gave TCU two 100-yard rushers for the second time in three games, with this performance coming against the Big 12’s best rushing defense at an average of 101 yards per game. K-State also led the league by allowing averages of 321 yards and 18.6 points, but the Frogs rolled up 553 total yards and the most points allowed by the Wildcats this season.

Tyler Lockett had 11 catches for 196 yards with a 70-yard TD, giving him 3,073 career yards receiving and surpassing his father’s K-State record of 3,032 set from 1993-96. The younger Lockett also has 203 receptions with 24 TDs, closing in on the school record of 218 catches and 26 TDs by his father Kevin.

Tyler Lockett had a 91-yard kickoff return late in the first half wiped out by a holding call.

On TCU’s opening drive of the second half, Boykin took off on a first-down run from the K-State 19 and was in a sprint when he got inside the 5 and did a somersault, hurling himself into the air. Though he was unable to keep his balance when his heels hit the ground first, he quickly bounced up after landing in the end zone to give TCU a 24-7 lead.

Kansas State responded with Jake Waters’ 15-yard TD pass to Curry Sexton, a drive extended by a pass interference call on Kevin White on a deep third-down incompletion intended for Lockett.

Three plays after Sexton’s catch, Green took a handoff to the right and was along the sideline before cutting back and past several defenders. Green went all the way across the field, and picked up a line of blockers before finishing off a 65-yard run.

The Frogs played their fifth ranked opponent in six games. Their only loss in that span came four weeks ago at Baylor when they led by 21 points in the fourth quarter before the Bears kicked a field goal on the last play of the game for the win.

TCU has games left at Kansas and Texas before the regular-season finale Dec. 6 at home against Iowa State. None of those teams have a winning record.

Kansas State, whose only previous loss had been at home to Auburn, has an open date next week before going to West Virginia, playing its home finale against Kansas and then going to Baylor.

Kansas hammers Iowa State for rare Big 12 win

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Michael Cummings threw for 278 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, Corey Avery ran for 103 yards and another score, and Kansas beat up Iowa State 34-14 on Saturday for just its second Big 12 win in the past four years.

Tony Pierson added 101 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Nigel King had 101 yards receiving as the Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5) raced out to a 24-0 lead in the battle for the basement.

Iowa State put together a pair of touchdown drives to make the game interesting, but the Jayhawks answered with inspired play by their defense and just enough offense.

The victory ended the Jayhawks’ four-game losing streak to Iowa State (2-7, 0-6), and may go a long way toward helping interim coach Clint Bowen earn the full-time job. He’s already matched the number of Big 12 wins that Charlie Weis and Turner Gill managed during their brief tenures.

No. 21 Nebraska defeats SW Minnesota State in exhibition opener

NebraskaNo. 21 Nebraska shook off a slow start in its exhibition opener and rebounded for an 83-61 win over Southwest Minnesota State Thursday evening.

The Huskers, who shot just 30 percent in the second half, rallied behind the play of sophomore Tai Webster, who scored nine of his 16 points in a 15-4 surge to open the second half.

Webster went 4-of-5 from the floor on the night, including a trio of 3-pointers as four Huskers finished in double figures. Junior Shavon Shields led all scorers with a game-high 29 points and nine rebounds, while Terran Petteway and Benny Parker added 10 points apiece for the Big Red.

The Huskers, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, were down 34-30 at the break before Webster took over. The sophomore hit consecutive 3-pointers during an 8-0 Husker run to give Nebraska its first lead since the opening minutes. The 6-foot-4 sophomore then capped the run with a conventional 3-point play, putting Nebraska ahead 45-38 with 15:06 left.

Southwest Minnesota State continued to hang around and was within 45-43 with 12:55 left, but a jumper by David Rivers and four Webster free throws capped a 6-0 spurt and put the Huskers ahead 51-43. SMSU pulled to within five at 51-46 on a Cole Martin 3-pointer, but the Huskers put the game away with a 16-3 run highlighted by eight straight points from Shields.

Martin, an Omaha native, led SMSU with 12 points, while Joey Bartlett added 11 in a losing effort.

Early on, the Mustangs gave the Huskers fits, using a 16-2 first-half run to build an 11-point lead after a 3-pointer from Bartlett. The Huskers were ice cold for the first 12 minutes, hitting just two of their first 15 shots from floor, as SMSU pushed the lead to 22-9 after Bartlett’s second 3-pointer of the half.

The Huskers roared back with increased intensity on the defensive end, as a Shields 3-pointer and a Petteway steal and dunk cut the margin to eight and forced SMSU to take a timeout. The Huskers kept chipping away and got a strong effort from Benny Parker off the bench, as he had six points and three steals and helped NU converted nine Mustang turnovers into 12 points in the half.

Nebraska trailed 34-25 before closing the half with five straight points, including Webster’s first 3-pointer of the night, to pull within 34-30.

The Huskers open the season on Sunday, Nov. 16, when they take on Northern Kentucky. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
