Griffons take three-of-four from No. 22 UCO with 6-1 win Sunday

MWSUThe Missouri Western baseball team picked up a 6-1 victory against No. 22-ranked Central Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at the Spring Sports Complex.

The win gave the Griffons a 3-1 series victory over the Bronchos. But unlike the past two wins, Missouri Western jumped on the scoreboard first.

Dylon Koch singled to left field and then stole second before Ryan Degner’s double put the Griffons up 1-0. Afterward, David Chew doubled to center field which scored Degner before Jake Scharder’s sac fly put Missouri Western up 3-0 after one.

The Bronchos added a run in the second inning after Dylan Tinkler doubled to center field and scored on Dilon Argo’s single up the middle. The 3-1 ball game stayed until the bottom of the fourth when Missouri Western added three more runs.

Jeremy Monty had a double to start the inning but was out at third base two batters later. The runner was the first out of the inning, but Missouri Western put together two hits after a wild pitch was thrown by Central Oklahoma. The sequence put the Griffons ahead 6-1 after four innings.
Neither team scored after that, giving the Griffons their second straight victory.

The Griffons had nine hits and one error while the Bronchos had six hits. Koch was 2 of 4 with an RBI while Chew was 3 of 4 with 2 RBI. Degner finished the game 2 of 3 with an RBI.

Jake Jones picked up the win and improved to 3-1 on the year. The Bronchos used five pitchers and pitcher Landon Hallam had his first loss of the year and fell to 2-1 on the season.

Missouri Western continues play on Wednesday at William Jewell for one scheduled nine-inning game at 2 p.m.

Missouri’s season ends with NIT loss to Southern Miss

MUCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Winning in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament means a lot to Southern Mississippi guard Neil Watson.

Winning in front of family made it much more memorable.

“Being so far away from Kansas down in Mississippi, my family doesn’t get to see me play a lot,” said Watson, a native Kansas City, Kan. “So them being here, being able to share in the win with my second family as far as my teammates, is very motivational for the rest of the NIT.”

Watson scored 18 points to lead Southern Mississippi past Missouri 71-63 on Sunday and said there were 14 family members at Mizzou Arena to support him.

“Sounded like a 114,” coach Donnie Tyndall said.

“My mom (Crystal), she’s a 100 people by herself,” Watson responded.

Aaron Brown added 16 points for the third-seeded Golden Eagles (29-6), who have won eight of their past nine games and advance to play at No. 1 seed Minnesota for the right to go to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Jeremiah Eason’s layup broke a 14-14 tie with 9:34 remaining in the first half and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. Missouri cut its deficit to three points on a 3-pointer by Earnest Ross with 14:41 left, but the Tigers could get no closer.

Ross scored 22 points while Jabari Brown and Jordan Clarkson both added 13 for second-seeded Missouri (23-12), which fell to 2-8 all-time in NIT games.

The Tigers head into the offseason wondering whether their top two scorers — juniors Brown and Clarkson — will return or turn professional. Ross, a senior, exhausted his eligibility. The trio combined for 70 percent of the team’s scoring this season.

“I had a great time here,” Ross said about playing two years at Missouri after two seasons at Auburn. “The fans did a great job of bringing me in. Coach (Frank) Haith and the rest of the coaching staff did a great job of coaching me. I had a great time here and wouldn’t want to have spent it anywhere else.”

Missouri scored the first five points of the game before the Golden Eagles answered with a 10-0 run. They used an 8-2 run to start the second half to build a 42-31 lead with 17:44 remaining before Missouri scored 10 of the next 12 points.

But Southern Mississippi rallied for the next six points for a 50-41 lead, and Missouri could never narrow its deficit to one possession.

Southern Mississippi finished in a four-way tie atop the regular-season standings in Conference USA with a 13-3 league record, and its RPI of 33 was the highest of any team not to make the NCAA tournament.

The Golden Eagles aren’t thinking about what they’ve missed out on, though, but rather where they have a chance to go — New York City, a metropolitan area where four players grew up.

“Anytime we can get a win and get to a place where our teammates can see their family, then that makes us fight that much harder in games and at practice,” Watson said.

No. 2 seed Kansas gets knocked out of NCAA Tourney by Stanford

KUST. LOUIS (AP) — Kansas knows all about Stanford now.

The Cardinal couldn’t deny a slight at a news conference a day earlier fueled them just a bit before pulling their second — and much bigger — upset of the NCAA tournament.

Kansas freshmen Andrew Wiggins and Wayne Selden Jr. ducked their heads and giggled Saturday when asked about Chasson Randle, Stanford’s leading scorer.

“We definitely saw that video,” Randle said Sunday after the No. 10 seed Cardinal beat the second-seeded Jayhawks 60-57 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the South Regional.

“Coach told me not to talk about it but I definitely took it as a challenge. It was a little big extra motivation.”

Enough for the Cardinal to make the Jayhawks the second No. 2 seed to be knocked out of this tournament in the third round and enough for them to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2008.

Wiggins was held to four points on 1-for-6 shooting in what could have been his final college game. He accepted his share of the responsibility for the loss.

“I let a lot of people down,” Wiggins said. “If I would have played better, we wouldn’t be in this situation, you know? I blame myself for this.”

Dwight Powell had 15 points and seven rebounds despite playing with four fouls much of the second half and Randle added 13 points, six steals and four assists for the Cardinal (23-12), who were making their first NCAA appearance since 2008.

“To beat a team like this, a storied program with great coaching, great players, always feels amazing,” Powell said. “So as of right now we’re still in the race and we’re still playing in March, and it feels great.”

Stanford beat No. 7 seed New Mexico on Friday and will have a higher seed for the first time when it faces 11th-seeded Dayton in the regional semifinal in Memphis, Tenn. The Flyers beat No. 3 Syracuse 55-53.

The 6-foot-8 Wiggins, a likely NBA lottery pick if he decides to leave school, was saddled with four turnovers for Kansas (25-10). Wiggins had averaged 28 points the previous four games but the Jayhawks were missing 7-foot freshman Joel Embiid, who was sidelined by a stress fracture in his back.

Coach Bill Self thought Stanford’s height up front bothered Wiggins, but added, “I think he had an off-game, too. Give them credit for that, we put him in position to make some plays.”

Josh Huestis, who had the primary responsibility for guarding Wiggins, played 39 minutes and had six points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

“That was Josh’s assignment and he took it to heart,” Dawkins said. “He had help. We just tried to make it as difficult as we could for him to score.”

Self said the game seemed like “a struggle from the opening tip.”

Everything didn’t go right for Stanford, either. The Cardinal were 0 for 9 from 3-point range.

“We can make 3s but that’s not what we rely on,” Dawkins said. “I didn’t even notice it because that’s not what we’ve been.”

Tarik Black had 18 points and six rebounds for the Jayhawks, but he fouled out with 5:25 to go. Conner Frankamp had 12 points on four 3-pointers, the last two in the final 23 seconds to make it close after Stanford had pulled ahead by seven.

Stanford was 9 for 12 at the free-throw line over the final 2:04 and needed all those points. Frankamp’s second 3-pointer narrowed the gap to 59-57 with 14.9 seconds left.

Anthony Brown hit one of two free throws with 12.9 seconds to go and Frankamp banged a third 3-point attempt off the glass near the buzzer in a bid to tie it.

“I knew when that left my hand it was off,” Frankamp said. “I didn’t get a great look at it.”

Kansas went to a full-court press down five points with about 11 minutes to play and forced five turnovers the next 6 minutes to tie it.

Kansas had been 0 for 10 from 3-point range for the tournament, seven of the misses against Eastern Kentucky, before Frankamp connected with 3:34 to go in the half.

Frankamp hit another one just before the halftime buzzer off a turnover to put the Jayhawks up 24-22, their first lead of the game. They trailed most of the first half against Eastern Kentucky, too, before pulling away for an 80-69 win.

Powell hit his first shot on a drive after going 0 for 8 against New Mexico on Friday. He had 10 points before drawing his fourth foul early in the second half.

Villanova, the No. 2 seed in the East Regional, lost 77-65 to seventh-seeded Connecticut on Saturday.

Northwest softball gets blanked by Minnesota State, 2-0

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State softball team was unable to generate consistent offense against Minnesota State Sunday as they fell 2-0.

The Mavericks were able to plate one run in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fifth while their starting pitching was able to silence the Bearcat offense.

Northwest was unable to string hits together to get runners on the board as they managed four hits, stranding five runners over seven innings.

Sarah Baldwin went the distance for the complete game loss as she gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out six and not allowing a walk.

Steph Mark, Madison Jones and Torri Blythe were responsible for the Bearcats hits in the game. Blythe was 2 for 3 with a stolen base as she extended her hit streak to seven games.

Northwest, who is now 10-6, will have a couple days off before returning to conference play. The Bearcats will host Pittsburg State Friday for their home opener. First pitch at Bearcat Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
